I think my mother was nuts - her name is Esperanza, she named her first
daughter "Linda Esperanza", named her 2nd daughter Maria Norberta (after a
grandmother), and then seemed to have forgotten names....naming me
Esperanza.  I have a niece whose name is Hope (she lives in Canada) and
another niece whose middle name is Esperanza.  In fact, when I married my
husband (javier), his sister's name is Esperanza who was also married to a
Javier.  Yikes---I tell people my alias is Maria Smith - makes it easier to
pronounce -- just kidding -- I would never allow anyone to call me outside of my
full name.

Elvira,

 

Are these historical Mexican novelas like mini-series that we see here in
the US?  I would love to see those, but we get no Spanish language
broadcasts here in the Seattle area.  Where could I get the videos or
DVDs?  I just love costume dramas.

 

Also, a long time ago, my Spanish friend told me that my mother, who was
from New Mexico, spoke a very old Spanish dialect and she even told me the
province or area in Spain where it was once spoken, but I can't remember
it.  Could it be Estremadura?

    If you can get it in your area, try
to watch a novela called  'Alborada".  It's a historical novel about
Mexico during the early 1800s.  It'll give you a good idea of Mexico
during that time. There are other historical novelas about Mexico you can
either get on tape or CD.

 

It  covers costuming, vanilla plantations, duelos,
thieves, people with titles, religious orders, Jewish relations, Catholic
Church, commerce with central America, la Nao de la China, ports of call,
commerce with other latinamerican countries (ties were closer than we think),
cochinilla, horses, carruajes, swordfighting,  births (how registrations
were not aways true), legitimate and illegitimate, morals, etc.

 

Regarding hermanito, manito:  this terminology is
found throughout the Spanish speaking world because of the priests telling the
new converts that they were hermanitos, so is that
particular pronounciation of acequia in just the way described
below.  Puerto Ricans and Cubans  are not the only ones who
pronounce it that way. I think that particular affectation of
speech -aspiration of sounds/vowels- is traced to a specific area of
Spain, the name of which escapes me right now.  There are some
studies done by the University of Puerto Rico documenting this. The same goes
for the word colorao.  That is rather common throughout
latinamerica.

The 'manitos had been in New Mexico since Onate's time there, 1598, but it
could be that Cuba and Puerto Rico were settled by the same group of Spaniards
that settled New Mexico in the 16th Century.  I agree that some of the
speech is similar between the two groups.

My grandfather's sister, Rafaela, married my grandmother's
brother.  Thirteen years later my grandparents get married.  So,
my dad has a set of first cousins whom I call "double-first cousins," since

I have attached a marriage document where Miguel Gonzales marries Maria
de Jesus de la Torre Sanchez and when she dies he marries (his first
cousin) Maria de Jesus de la Torre Correa. If the priest had not
mentioned the "cadaver ...", how would one ever discover that he didn't
marry the same person twice. No maternal names are mentioned.

I was thinking that in some communities long ago certain names were very
common to that community, both given names and surnames.  It may be that
people lived so long and so isolated in one place that food, names, 
practices, accents, etc. became almost unique to the area.  I had such
trouble finding my mother's Provencio and Medina families in the Juarez-El
Paso Valley and Mesilla Valley of Southern New Mexico because so many people had
those names there and used the same given names over and over.  My
great-great grandfather was Jose Provencio and his second or third wife was my
great-great grandmother Jesus Medina.  I recently found I was on the wrong
track in finding them because at the same period in time in the same area there
was another couple with the same names!  One of those Jesus Medinas (not
mine) married another Provencio when her Jose Provencio died.  These people
were known as "manitos" (the priests had told them they were Hermanitos), and
their nasally speech was unique, an ancient 16th century Spanish, where they
dropped the first and last parts of words as in 'equia for acequia, and 'manito
for hermanito, and colorao for colorado, and they had beliefs and practices
unique to them.  Due to more mobility nowadays, that is all gone.

Another common coincidence is when a man or woman lost a spouse they would re-marry and the second spouse would have the same given name as the first spouse.
 
When my parents divorced my dad married an Esperanza and my mom's name is Esperanza, when my Padrino in Ensenada lost his first wife Berta, he married again to another Berta and I have found several cases in my research of widows or widowers who re-married and married someone with the same given name as their first spouse.
 
Could this be coincidence?

Correction:

 

In my family tree I have:  Four, first
cousins, who are  sisters.  The first two sisters married two
brothers, and the other two sisters are also married to
brothers.   The first two brothers are not "blood related" to
the second set of brothers.   Can you beat that?.  They all
live in the Sacramento area.
