No doubt Lopez de Santana is among the most opprobrious characters in
Mexican history, but blaming the current state of affairs exclusively
to the acts of leaders like him is no doubt an extreme oversimplification.

Very interesting information, Joseph.

Although the ecclesiastical divisions didn't strictly follow the lines
that eventually became the political division of the States.

An interesting bit of history is that Aguascalientes used to be part
of the State of Zacatecas until the early to mid 1800s, when Santa Ana
granted its independence as a sovereign State and a way to punish some
political opponents he had in Zacatecas.
