Backups:
Drupal mid July 2025 backups of files and databases were successful.
Production Version Updates:
The following website software versions were updated: Drupal remains at version 11.2.2.
The Linux kernel was updated to version 6.8.0-63 (short reboot required). PHP was remains
at version 8.3.23. MariaDB remains at version 11.4.7. The Ubuntu operating system remains
at version 24.04.2.
I am looking into increases in email spam on the NR website. The site has some pretty robust
tools to combat spam. SpamAssassin & Fail2Ban software being 2 that VPS admins frequently use.
These normally work well right out the box, with default settings, but lately more have been
getting through. The emails that SpamAssassin flags go straight to NR Spam mailbox, and if
Fail2Ban finds a known Spam IP address, these emails never even make to our system. I will
be tightening the settings on both of these, the first by lowering the default threshold on what
is considered spam. SpamAssassin uses a point system (0-10) to determine if a email is likely
spam, with anything higher or equal to 5.0 considered as spam. Some recent actual spam
emails got through with a ranking in the 4 range, so I will adjust accordingly. I have also
flagged some known spammer IP addresses, which will prevent further spam from reaching the
NR inbox. Unfortunately if emails from the NR email system are forwarded to your local email
system, they may or may not be flagged as spam, so if you have email from the NR email
system forwarded to your local email system, just be aware that your own local spam deterrent(s)
will need to flag forwarded emails.
