Hi Jospeh, it's Daniel I might be of some help but not professional, which require maybe actually going to Los Altos and Spain and pulling some strings. I do have some resources when connecting to Spain. What line(e) and families is the individual looking at. Most Alteño families have already connected to Spain and with resources like published books can help. Familysearch might not be so much of a help when dealing with this subject. You could prob find some thing back to Spain but doubt you'll find a connection. Like the Romo de Vivar is one of those rare family search connections. How about Mariano GOnzález-Leal? -Daniel Méndez del Camino

Hey there Joseph,

There are several genealogists here in the region that might be able to help
out. What info or what exactly is the applicant looking for?

Dia de los Muertos

I know I am really late asking this - and I am just asking our of curiosity - but did anyone set up an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, to honor and remember those family members who had passed on.
I wanted to do so , but the death of my dear daughter last month ... well, I just couldn't quite do it. Perhaps I will get back to setting up an ofrenda next year. My son-in-law (non-hispanic) and two young grand-daughters set up a small ofrenda - the little one, 3 -1/2 yrs, wanted to put "everything" on the ofrenda, because "mommy would love it". (It was his first experience - I appreciate that he made the effort to share his wife's heritage with their children.)

Natalie,
Please accept our sincere condolesces. My sister set up an ofrenda for
our father who died in January. It was difficult not to cry as I stood
looking at those objects and photos of my beloved father. Also, as a
college professor at Cal Poly Pomona, my sister also works with her
students and I can attest to the fact that many of the ofrendas are
elaborate and very meaningful. The students set them up annually.
Again, I am so sorry about your loss.

Natalie --- my condolences.

I didn't know what you meant by an "ofrenda" so I went to google and typed in "ofrenda for dia de los muertos", and I got several sites that had videos and photos of them.

In one site called questconnect.com I found the article below about ofrendas in Oaxaca. I suppose each region in Mexico has similar ones. It looks like they are highly personal things, so what your little grandchildren did from the heart was quite appropriate. In the article below, they built an altar and put paper fall decorations on it as well as food and fruits, flowers, photos of the departed and saints. I think if I built one I would put fall leaves, indian corn, a sage plant, fall flowers, cookies, nuts, candies, grapes, candles and Halloween figurines as well as figurines or photos of saints and of our dear departed. I have a built-in buffet that would be perfect for it.

if there is any way possible can you scout for opportunities for the
http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com podcast project in the area of the
"African Presence in Mexico." I have a section (
http://nuestrafamiliaunida.com/podcast/coyote.html ) on the podcast
called "/*Coyote*/" that has Audio on this topic. I would very much like
to find more people or organizations to contribute audio material for
this area of the podcast. So if you see anyone that is particularly
fluent on teaching the history of the African Presence in Mexico or just
someone interested in contributing what they know I'm interested in
talking to them. Also if you have a digital recorder please take it with
you as there might be opportunities to do some interviews while you are
in Mexico or even the next time you are in the Chicago Mexican American
Fine Arts Museum.

thanks for considering this,

Hi Joseph:

The book is basically the history of the Cofradia de Santiago de Burgos. It includes a transcription of the by-laws and the main part of the book is the collection of paintings of the some of the members, most of them on horseback and dressed ready to do battle. There are four paintings of the caballeros on each page. One caballero was Gonzalo Gonzalez de Fermosa (originally Hermosilla was called Fermosilla in the X century) It has nothing at all about his lineage, it states that it was founded in 1338 and Gonzalo Gonzalez appears on the first list of its founders.
At the end of the book, there is a short section with some genealogy information on a few of the members of the Cofradia.

I have already returned the book to the library, it should be available again probably in a couple of weeks or sooner, I did not want to keep

Llanos Y Valdez / Llanos Y Valdes information?

So after a long grace period away from this, I decided to run a search and see what comes up and I found 2 things of promise. Problem is, they are very vague mentions in the posts that came up.

Does anyone know much of the surname Llanos Y Valdez(also spelt Llanos Y Valdes) and its connection to the surname Rivas? If there is information on the family itself in terms of a history, thats what I'd prefer to know. It was mentioned they are "old families", so, I'm guessing there is a lot behind these.

I am Cole. My family history comes up if you search
"Rivas/Salas/Flores/Llanos Y Valdez"...I included the whole family up til my
grandmother's generation(as she is the oldest living link). Our family
supposedly had a rancho by Val Paraiso, but, nothing really has come up for
that...I do know that my Llanos y Valdez were very wealthy though...

The Llanos y Valdes in the Jerez area are descendant from a certain Juan Jose Llanos y Valdes who was a captain in the Spanish army, son of Spanish immigrants born in Michoacan around 1652. Note that the name is composed, i.e. it is not that one parent was named Llanos and the other Valdes. The two have been used in a composed manner since the immigration of the first Llanos y Valdes to Michoacan in the early 1600s.

Juan Jose Llanos y Valdes married the daughter of a matrimony of two of the most prominent and wealthy Jerez Spanish families, the Carlos de Godoy and Carrillo D'Avila.

http://ramosfamily.org/nextgen/getperson.php?personID=I1531

His descendants largely go by simply the name Valdes these days as after the independence "composed" Spanish surnames like Llanos y Valdes were out of fashion. They are very wealthy landowners throughout the Jerez region. Much of the land in the town where my father was born, Villa Guerrero, is owned by Llanos y Valdes.

How do I find these records or research this potential connection? I'm a
university student, and living in California(San Diego), so my access to
records in Mexico is not exactly very good. If my finances were better, I'd
probably cheat a little bit and do a mtDNA test to determine potential
matches who might have a better idea of family history(and also get some
perspective on long term migratory patterns), but I'm not able to afford the
$125 pricetag that the weakest of the tests runs at :(

That said, I've noticed your family comes up in connection to this larger
family as well. Do you have a comprehensive history of the Llanos y Valdes
family of the area?? It'd make for an interesting contrast between where we
were and the hardship that we went through after Aurelio Rivas passed away
and couldn't fund Jesus Rivas' education as an engineer anymore, which
ultimately led to the family crossing to the States.

I am descendant from the Llanos y Valdes through one of my paternal great-grandfathers, Juan Gutierrez Jara. As far as searching through Mexican baptism and marriage records, it is quite easy to do through an LDS family history center in San Diego.

http://www.familysearch.org

You should start from people you know and go backwards, i.e. start in Valparaiso until you get to the end of those records and then start looking in older parrishes of the region, i.e. Mezquitic, Tlaltenango, Jerez:

Filmed chuch records in Valparaiso go back to 1831 (for baptisms) and 1864 (for marriages). I don't think any are indexed and thus they are not searchable online, but if you know the approximate date of birth of your grandparents or great grandparents, you should be able to find their baptism certificate which will then list their parents and grandparents names...

Here is my Llanos y Valdes connection. If you follow the link in my previous email, you can see what I have documented of this

Cole,

I too am descended from this couple, as are Sally and Hector, two other members of Ranchos. I got help from them and also from a man in Mexico named Salvador Cabral. I will send you that family tree to your e-mail address as an attachment later. I haven't figured out how to upload it to WorldConnect or to the files here yet. I can't concentrate lately. My husband had surgery for his prostate cancer, and I am busy being his nurse and doing some chores he used to do.

that I have a name for would be in her 8th or 9th generation listed. The
problem is, I don't know anything about those individuals except names and
dates and where they're from, so, I can't discern if they're truly related
and are unlisted siblings. Theres the additional issue of name-matching; by
that generation, hers are no longer "Llanos Y Valdes" by name...whereas mine
retained it up until the marriage with the Rivas family.

UREÑA FAMILY

I just wanted to mention that my great-grandmother was an Ureña. Her family lived in Totatiche, Jalisco, and her branch of the Ureñas started originally in Jerez, so I'm sure there is a connection. I have many Ureñas from that general are in my database. Email me and I'll see if there is a connection.

Latin translation needed

A friend of mine at the local FHC asked for my help in translating a document. It is from a country that uses the cyrillic [sp?] alphabet, but the printed part is also in Latin, as well as what the priest hand-wrote on the form.

Question about Church Records

When I read the old church records I am curious about for instance marriages. It shows witnesses but usually says something like: testigos de edad or mayores de edad. What does that mean? Also, they seem to show grandparents names, listed as AP or AM and I assume that stands for Abuelos Paternos or maternal?

Comments

Comment

Testigos de edad o mayores de edad stand for adults (as opposed to menores de edad=minors). Regarding AP and AM, you are correct Paternal and Maternal grandparents, respectively.

Sincerely

Jaime

Thank you Jaime. Normally are the adults (or minors) related? I notice the last names tend to be the same but not sure of their relations yet but thankfully I found this site to search.  My cousin told me that we are distant relatives of Gen. Mariano Escobedo (not direct descendants) and because of that our male ancestors were conscripted into the federal army to fight against Pancho Villa. I was wondering are there any military records?

Juan de Padilla Davila? Delgadillo? horro?

Hello everyone,
Back in Galveston after Ike, attempting to do a little genealogical research. I have been inspecting carefully the marriage record of Juan de Padilla and Petronila de Siordia (Thanks, Connie for the copy). Although as Connie mentioned, the copy is not good, I was able to digitally enhance it, and I am convinced that neither 'Davila' (suggested by Daniel) nor 'Delgadillo' (suggested by Connie) appear in the document after "Juan de Padilla". Instead, in my opinion it reads 'herro' or 'horro' -Note that at the time the letter 'h' was written more like a "S", thus in not uncommon to find transcriptions of surnames as 'Hinojosa' as 'Sinojosa'. I tried several searches for Herro (a Basque surname) in the "Catalogo de Pasajeros de Indias" en PARES, given that Juan is identified as 'Natural de Xerez' (Thus, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain). No matches. I entered 'Horro', and I found numerous records, all of them as far I could tell, linked to the racial descriptions of black (negros, de color loro) followed by the qualification of their status as freedmen (horro=slave that was set free). The complete description generally reads 'horro, libre'.

Ronnie,
I am posting this edited version of the message I sent you this morning so that others at Nuestros Ranchos can also read it.
Earlier today, I sent you and Mary Lou a copy of the marriage document of Juan de Padilla and Petrona de Siordia to hear what she thinks. For my part, I can see where the "y Davila" may have come from. At the margin it reads "Juan de Padilla 'horro'? y Doña Petrona." Because of the writting style, the "y Doña" can easily be confused with "y Davila". If anyone would like to inspect a copy, please let me know.

I came across a board on genealogy.com and other webpages from google that say these three families are somehow related but never mention exactly how. I do know that Pérez y Franco and Pérez de Paredes are related becuase the couple of Silão, Gto.

I can be of help but only in guidance, Jalpa is an interesting place of history and border confusion,
Jalpa belongs to the Parish of Tabasco, zac a little more north of Huanusco. Also Jalpa use to be
part of Huanusco before being broken into two. I use to have tabasco films and found A LOT of people
from Jalpa in the south. Just because a place is limited films doesnt mean people didnt travel far to get
baptised. Always check the surrounding parishes for clues. Just my thoughts. -Daniel MDC

Thanks Mercedes:

I'd like to ask you if by chance in your reccords you have or have seen Juana Petra VITELA VILLARREAL born abt 1892 in Jalpa, her parents were: Francisco VITELA and Juana VILLARREAL SALAS. Also if you have marriage reccords there could be Francisco and Juana's marriage abt 1890. Francisco's parents were Gorgonio or Aurelio VITELA, and Fermina or Emigdia LOPEZ.

Unfortunately I don't have any sibling for Francisco Vitela, but according to the civil registrations of his sons he says he is from Jalpa and that he was born in 1866-68.

About Juana Villarreal I do have siblings who were born in Rancho de Ayo, Jalpa, Zac. or just Jalpa, and they were the following: Carmen, Trinidad, Natividad, Maria and my Juana that was born in 1877 in Jalpa. Her pareents were Juan Villarreal and Dionisia Salas also from there. I don't know if Juana was the oldest or youngest, but her parents could be married abt. 1870-75

Hope all this information be helpful to find their roots

Alessandro, I will look for the below in the civil records. Here is the
issue, the years do have an index and if Juana Petra is on the index then it will
be easy to find. However, the index is mostly not always accurate, e.i. my
grandfather was listed incorrectly and I had to go through each record to find
him. I will definitely look at the index and if I find it I will let you know.

Alessandro, I looked in the civil birth records index from 1891 - 1893. I
did not see a Juana Vitela listed. This is not to say it is not there, as I
mentioned the index is mostly but not always correct, or perhaps you have the

Tomas Villalobos

Hello to all , my ggrandfather Tomas Villalobos was married to my ggrandmother Carmen De Los Santos (we think this was her name ) she died in child birth with my grandmother Jacoba (1901)who married my grandfather Jose Olivar, I am looking for any help with this as I have no information on the Villalobos side of my family.

It could be helpful to search in the census Mexico 1930, maybe this living relative appears in it or any other relative that give you a guide. Are you familiar with the census?

Maria, I have a connection to Maria de Jesus Villalobos I think from Atotonilco, Jal and married Epefanio Guiterrez. Maria crossed the border at Laredo, Texas in 1919, destination San Antonio, Texas on Oct 30, 1919. Her birth date shows abt 1893. Any connection to your Jose Maria Villalobos?

Hi Yoli,

Thanks for checking against your Villalobos line, but it doesn't sound like
they connect (at least not in the time frame you mention). My Villalobos
were born in the 1780's and baptized in San Juan de Los Lagos. I found
Joseff Jualian Villalobos' (Jose Maria's brother) baptismal record on the
IGI, batch #C603386 dated 30 Jan 1780.

Maria vs. Jose & baptism practices....

Hello Rudy,
Per my father, names such as Guadalupe, Jesus, Refugio, Trinidad
etc., often had the first name Maria or Jose inserted before to specify
the sex of the person. For example, Jose Guadalupe vs. Maria Guadalupe;

My nino was my Uncle Jose Refugio Puentes who married my nina Francis.
I'm not related to her side of the family but doing some research on her
branch. I ordered the photocopies from SLC and they arrived today. Below
is the information on the records. Can the members of the group that
have roots in the San Juan de Los Lagos area check your databases and
see if any of the below names tie into your genealogy:

Teodoro Marquez was born in Rancho del Ocote (sp), San Juan de Los Lagos
in about in about 1844 his parents were Celso Marquez and Jesus de Anda.
Teodoro Married Antonia Munoz in 1871. She was born Rancho del Ocote,
San Juan de Los Lagos in about 1855 her parents were Filomeno Munoz and
Sebastiana Marquez.

the padrinos for their marriage were Carlos Marquez and Martiana Marquez.

in 1872 they had a child named Saturina whose padrinos were Carlos
Marquez and Martiana Marquez.

in 1874 they had a child named Estanislao who was the grandfather of my
nina and whose padrinos
