Collote/Collota

In Spanish times what were these caste system classifictions mean? I have some ancestors as Collotes. -Daniel Mendez del Camino

Daniel,

In very old documents, the term "coyote" (also spelled "collote") was used
to describe the offspring of "indio" with "mestiza" (three-fourths indian,
one fourth spaniard). The following terminology for various race mixtures
is found in "México Mestizo" by Agustín F. Basabe Benítez [Fondo de Cultura
Económica, México 1992]:

Español e India = Mestizo
Español y Negra = Mulato
Español y Mestiza = Castizo
Español y Castiza = Español
Español y Mulata = Morisco
Español y Morisca = Alvino
Español y Alvina = ?
Indio y Negra = Lobo? (not sure about this one)
Indio y Mestiza = Coyote
Lobo y Negra = Chino
Chino e India = ?
