Well, Marge,
 
Our obsession could lead to illness if we are not careful.  I find that when I am on a tear, I spend too many hours poring over records on the internet with the glare of the screen and artificial lights, at the FHC, reading, taking notes, etc and neglect my sleep and exercise and diet.  I notice that my eyesight has really suffered lately.  I need to remember to take frequent breaks, etc  It seems too that I plan my life now around trips to the haunts of my ancestors and cemeteries and Salt Lake City and countless university, city, and state libraries.  I risk snakebites in old cemeteries, etc.  One rattlesnake bite could ruin my whole day, my husband says.

I don't think of genealogy an illness.  I think it's more of desire to
know about ourselves and we just get carried away to the exclusion of
all else.

That is a great point Lili,
 
Everytime I meet a teacher, I tell him/her that a good project for young children as soon as they learn to read and write is starting a family tree and interviewing their relatives about what life and school was like when they were young, what games they played, what language they spoke, where their ancestors came from and what that country was like.  It would give them a good picture of their place in life and make their future studies of economics, geography and history come to life and be more interesting.  Everyone has some value to somebody, and we can all live on in recorded history through documentation of lives lived.
