Irma,

What you say about our memories of sitting around while the grown-ups
talked about their bringing up (te acuerdas-----?) may be what is influencing
many of us now.  When I am reading the records in microfilms, I actually
hear the voices of my older relatives; I hear their inflections, the way they
spoke the Spanish language.  When I have done a long stretch of reading
films, I continue to hear the voices long after.  My husband experienced
that phenomenon too when we were in Salt Lake City and he helped me review some
films, even though he doesn't go the the local FHC with me.  He does go
with me to the libraries (FHCs and university libraries in El Paso, Las Cruces,
etc) and helps me.

my family, I was at the FHC library and a member of the LDS Church was helping
me get started.  I had already made several attempts at research by
myself  but could never get good results.....needless to say, I was
getting VERY frustrated!  In fact, I was ready to give up!
Then I started having dreams about my ancestors and I did not even know
them~~!!  You can imagine how that felt!   When I told my
friend at the FHC library about my dreams she looked at me in (what I thought)
was a strange way......I asked her what was wrong and she said "nothing"......
Later, as I was preparing to leave, she took me aside and explained to me that
"she did not know if I would understand what she was going to tell me, but
that she would tell me anyway."  This statement must have come because I
told her that my dreams sometimes scared me and I did not understand why
I was dreaming about people I did not even know......and this happened several
times.....not just once or twice.  She went on to tell me that "our
ancestors choose someone in the family to continue doing the search.....and
that was probably what was happening to me!"
WOW!   Was I shocked!  After giving it some thought, it
made sense!  I am the only one in my family who is interested in
genealogy and has done extensive research......in other words, I am the only
obsessed one!   :-)  Out of the 21 or so grandchildren of my
grandparents, I am the only one who does genealogy.  Then it all made
sense to me.....the reason for my "obsession".... the reason why "sometimes
information just falls into my lap"  etc, etc. etc.  After reading
"Psychic Roots" and "More Psychic Roots" it all made complete sense to me and
I now look forward to these dreams......my private visits with my
ancestors........

Maybe is a chip in the brain that compells us,
sort or a chip I mean, for me is an urge that started early in life, I try to
keep memories of names in my mothers chat over dinners, mostly when we had no
tv, I long for those moments... than tater after her pass of the way I dream a
lot about her very vividly, and since I started this genealogy formaly those
dreams almos stop, nowadays I dream about her now and then... thanks to my
parents use of the oral tradition I feel that my relatives I never met are
part of the family... that's for me Emilie how it is.

This is an excerpt from an article in the latest World
Wildlife Federation Newsletter:

"For reasons not fully understood, millions of
North American butterflies from southern Canada and the eastern United
States migrate south each year to just a few mountaintops in
Michoacan........the monarchs that return to the butterfly sanctuary in
Mexico are approximately five generations removed from those that left
Mexico the previous spring.....how monarchs are able to locate the same
forest ecosystem year after year without having been there before remains an
unsolved biological mystery".

When I read this, I had also just read about the same phenomenon in a
book called "Psychic Roots", except that they said it took about eight
generations for the butterflies to make the round trip.  Talk about
serendipity!

Are we like those butterflies?  What is it that calls us to locate
the records of our ancestors from eight generations past when we have not
been where they lived?  Why do so many of us feel compelled to
travel such long distances and endure the risks and hardships of foreign
travel to look through dusty tomes and tramp through old ruins and
panteones?  Why do we feel such a thrill for each discovery?
Does our RNA/DNA hard-wire us to seek the locale of some of our ancestors,
just like the butterflies' RNA/DNA?  Oooooooo.  Sounds like a
Siren's Song that calls us. That is an unsolved mystery.
