Judy,

I have started transcribing it, but it will take me some time. Maybe have it read and transcribed by tomorrow evening, if not, until Friday.

Alicia,

Thank you so much for helping on this project, it means so much to me - I still can't believe that I was able to locate this document, thanks to the help of Claudia Reynoso for indexing - once I had my 7th great-grandfathers name, it put it in "google" and had a hit which was for the Guadalajara Marriage Dispensas and there was his name. Thank you all so much !

Judy,

Still working on this, I was sick this week with a viral infection, therefore did not have the energy it takes to go through the record. I'll keep working on transcribing and then translating this document.

Baptism Requirements

I have a general question that may have already been answered so I apologize in advance.

Comentarios

Comentario

I do not think there was a requirement to baptize within a certain number of days, but rather an expectation or custom. A consideration was that many babies did not survive, so if born alive, it was rather important for them to be baptized soon. Typically, baptism was within a few days of the birth. In some places and some periods, 2-3 weeks was customary; but the shorter time period was much more common. However, I have seen baptisms a month or more after the birth, as well as on the day the baby was born.

In today's Church, a person typically needs permission of the priest of the parish they reside in for sacraments to be performed in another parish. Formerly, the costs associated with the sacraments were part of the priest's income. Historically, this was part of the reasons for Benito's Juarez's reforms in the late 1850s.

I noticed in some of the earlier baptism records in Michoacan and Zacatecas if a child was very ill or in danger of dying anyone could baptize them then report it to the church and they would be baptized a second time at the church if they lived.  I also noticed in some parts of Jalisco and Zacatecas abt 10 days seemed to be the norm. in the mid to late 1800.  I also found my ancestor baptized but no civil registration for a year giving that year for her birth when she was actually a year old so baptism was more important to them.

Problems with Family Search

Is anyone having problems with the search feature of Family Search?

The Familysearch address for the Mexican records changed one or two days ago, this might have altered other nested addresses.
This is the new link for the main page:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&region=MEXICO

Now, when yo go to the main Familysearch website you don't have to go anymore to "Canada, USA and Mexico", you may go directly to Mexico or the United Stetes.

Yes, there is problem with FamilySearch. I have had problems in doing searches. And I just saw a message that was sent to the Admins of the Facebook pages for FamilySearch. Which said the following:

"Heads up-- there is a problem with FamilySearch today- a search is not possible in the collections after a big change was made in the collections- be patient is the answer- they will be up again soon the engineers are aware"

my problem is I can't get more than 10 pages and then the link breaks and it tell me to try again later.. I have to admit this has been a problem since I started using the feature but it still beats going to a history center, ordering film and waiting for it..

There are some issues that the Family Search staff is trying to solve. I received the following reply this morning:

Dear George Fulton,

Thank you for contacting FamilySearch regarding technical issues with our site regarding Mexico Births and Marriages.

We are aware of the problem and are taking steps to correct it. You could help in this process by using the Reply tool on your email (to keep your Case number, which is 2438606) with the name and location for which you were searching.

Please try again on Monday.

Yes.

I think I know why: a data source that the search engine looks at apparently is offline.

There is a work-around: go back to the old Family Search, and do the advanced search. You can search the IGI and the Vital Records Index there. The old search engine isn't as powerful, so it is a bit harder to search (we've gotten a bit spoiled with the current one).

I would imagine that things will be back to normal in a day or so; hopefully not longer.

I'm searching Asientos, Aguascalientes, and records I've found in the last couple of days do not come up in my searches tonight.

I've tried a couple of different browsers, and get the same results.

I've notified Family Search through the website "Help" screen of the difficulties. I also talked with someone on the help line, but that wasn't too helpful. The volunteer was seeing exactly what I was, so it is not my computer that is causing the problems.

Some brief information about Joel Poinsett (from Wikipedia):

First Minister to Mexico
Statue of Poinsett in Greenville, South Carolina in 2010.

He simultaneously served as a special envoy to Mexico from 1822 to 1823 and was appointed the first American minister to Mexico in 1825, and became embroiled in the country’s political turmoil until his recall in 1830. It was during this time that he visited the area of south of Mexico City around Taxco del Alarcon where he found what was later to become known in the United States as the poinsettia, in Mexico is called "Flor de Noche Buena" (Christmas Eve flower). (The Aztecs referred to the winter-blooming plant as cuetlaxochitl; its Latin name is Euphorbia pulcherrima or "the most beautiful Euphorbia.") Poinsett, an avid amateur botanist, sent samples of the plant home to the States and by 1836 the plant was most widely known as the "poinsettia."

From other sources: Because of his meddling in internal affairs in Mexico, the Mexican

Hi Esther,
Thanks so much for looking them up.  I do have that information, including a marriage for Joseph Feliz de Arranbide with Maria de Esalba on 03/19/1720 in Mexico, DF.  Unfortunately, the Mexico, DF online records don't go that far back for a quick check.
What is your opinion: is de Esalba or Ysalba a variation of de Alba?  The reason I ask, is there appears to be next to no one with the first variation of the name.  I'd love to know if any members with the de Alba surname have run across de Esalba or Ysalba in  their research. Again, let me know what you think and thanks again for your consideration.

Armando,
My inexperience is definitely showing.  Incredible!   This will teach me not to rely so much on the labeling.  Never would I have thought that a 1720 document would be found under 1886-1933!  I found the marriage entry, then I discover that the bride's name was mistranscribed.  She was indexed as Maria de Esalba, when the original text clearly states de Eslaba.  Unfortunately it didn't name parents, but now I will search the informacion matrimonial and hope for the best.  Thank you so much for your help; I wouldn't have done this without it.
Sincerely,  Alice

The Antonio SANTANA found by Marta Haro as baptized 24 May 1723 (I couldn't find this record in the entries for March or May 1723) must be from another year, or possibly from another family. Antonio SANTANA and Feliciana GOMES-GARSIA's son, Cayetano, was baptized 21 Sep 1723 (Tecolotlan, Image 388); this would leave only four months between these two birth dates. Cayetano later married Juana URIVE Ramires on 27 May 1750 (info from IGI).

There is an older brother, Antonio SANTANA Gomes-Garsia, who married Mariana DE LA PENA Castillo on 11 Feb 1730 in Tecolotlan, so this first Antonio would have to be born at least by 1710 or 1712. I made a unsuccessful quick search through Tecolotlan marriages to locate these records, but they are badly out of order.

Hello Deedra:

All of Antonio de Santa Ana and Feliciana Gómez were born in the Ranch "San José de los Guajes", that was of their property, it's know located in the municipality of Juchitlán.
It's correct Antonio's baptism date and they had another son named Miguel, he was born aprox. in 1708 but he's baptismal record wasn't in the church according to my uncle Gabriel. Miguel married twice, the first with Juana García de Alba and the second with Agustina del Castillo.

These are quite likely old or obsolete film numbers. The following is from the Family Search wiki:

Old Book and Film Numbers Used by the Family History Library

The Family History Library has used a few different way to number films and books since the library started in 1894. These numbers are now mostly found on old family group sheets for the sources for the data on the sheets. These old numbers for books and films are no longer used, so the current numbers for the books and films must be found.

There were three old numbering systems for books and three old numbering systems for films.

Thank you George. That makes sense now. It's unfortunate those numbers

Have you looked at all of the dispensas that have been posted by Claudia at
www.guadalajaradispensas.com that involve surnames of children,
grandchildren, and great grand children of Melchor Reynoso and María de San
Juan Gonsales Rubio?

The following won't provide proof but can provide evidence of the
connection that has been assumed. These are things that are normally
associated with close family members. What are the names of the padrinos of
the baptisms and marriages? Are the children of Melchor born in the same
ranch or hacienda as Sebastián Reynoso y Renteria and María Francisca
Ramires de Hermosillo? Is Melchor mentioned in the baptisms of
grandchildren of Sebastián Reynoso y Renteria and María Francisca Ramires
de Hermosillo? This could mean he is an uncle or a cousin.

Based on your description of your research you may have done this already, but if not ...

Sometimes the matrimonial investigations will exist for a couple that you know were married, because all their children are "hijos legitimos", but for which you cannot find the marriage record. A check the matrimonial investigations will sometimes be successful. I have seen this in Aguascalientes.

Emily,

I learned something from your post too because I don't use Ancestry. I
wasn't aware of the trolling robots used there. The only place I've posted
any of my work is on NR. I did so because I want to collaborate with others
who are researching the same families I am. The person who took the liberty
of posting my info is not related to my family and I know that because the
tree ends after x number of generations. I am also certain that they copied
my tree because they included an error I had in my original file, which I
later corrected. I don't know who it is because I didn't bother trying to
contact that individual. All I know is that they published it under the
name Daniel the Actor. Ironic, isn't it?

What I did to "protect" my file is publish it as a PDF and password protect
the print, copy and paste functions. I figured this way only someone who is
really researching the same families I am will take the time to contact me
and not merely copy my work to append it to theirs. I

Thanks for your response. I only wish I was more computer literate so I could produce PDFs and copyright them. I thought you had just made that tree of yours in Rootsweb private somehow.

My only defense right now is to keep all my trees on Ancestry as Private and not Public. I will continue to monitor the other trees of mine on Rootsweb and see if anyone else lifts the information verbatim---yes, just like they did with yours, I know it is mine since I posted every detail of it that no one else has except my cousins, but I monitor their trees to make sure they get everything correct and that they keep their trees Private, since they insist on using the robot software on Ancestry to create their trees. I told them that other genealogy programs work the same and are just as easy and no one can download them if they are only on their computers, but again, Ancestry.com makes it too easy.

I am so discouraged about the use of Family Tree Maker that Ancestry and Rootsweb

Maria---I read your post with interest because even though I can't understand all the Spanish, the word "Rootsweb" jumped out at me. I had the unfortunate experience with my husband's Garcia tree (Garcia from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco)
appearing on Rootsweb's World Connect in a new file created by someone I did not know. Her e-mail address appeared in italics in light print (you can hardly read it) so I e-mailed her and asked her if she was related. She was not in any way. She is a Mormon who has been looking for her father whose surname is Garcia. She never knew him.

The tree I posted to Nuestros Ranchos is the same as the one I had posted to Ancestry.com and WorldConnect (Rootsweb) because I didn't have PAF on my computer yet. Arturo posted it for me on NR because I couldn't figure out how to do it. So the lady didn't take my tree from NR since she is not a member here.

So I asked her why she would take my husband's tree exactly as I had made it, and merge it in a

Think about how many "ahas" happen here when someone shares a bit of the puzzle...and then someone else shares their own little bit of the puzzle...then (and we've seen this), a whole landscape has been painted by our collective work. I do think we shall give the credit to the discoverer. I know how much effort and time we need to sacrifice in order to obtain what we want, but as you said, this information isn't private, it's for all of us. I respect the decision of either publishing a book or on the internet but we need to share what we have, someday we'll be rewarded by receiving help from others and people won't stop in topics that are already discovered, they'll continue to other ones and it'll be faster.

Uncle asked me to research at his death bed.

Last night, I had a dream where my Uncle guided me to all the faces of our
discovered ancestors. I am sure that they do not intend for us to hoard
information that our extended family could enjoy~ they need validation by
more than a few of their descendents, and so I gladly share what I learn with
anyone that asks. After all, isn't that what the intent of this site?
Of course, we should acknowledge those that have shared information....

I haven't given thanks recently to Joseph or Helyn, both whom have

Hi Enrique,
Thank you so much for your offer of assistance.  Martin Arrambide was the greatgrandfather of Jesus Arrambide who married Genoveba Garza 07/20/1854 in Lampazos de Naranjo, NL.  Aside from their marriage entry, I don't have any info on this particular couple.  Their ancestors, however, open up the world of Nuevo Leon for me.  After Martin's arrivial from Europe, the Arrambides appeared to remain in Salinas Victoria, as were the Morales Aguada, Garza Cantu, and Gonzales Ochoa all relatives from both sides of this couple.  It would be interesting if we had any ancestors in common, but because there were so many Garzas and Gonzales in the area, it would be a pleasant surprise.
It sounds as if you've been researching this region longer than I have.  And although it is new to me, let me know if I can be of any help and I will gladly share what facts, or leads I may have.
Take care,  Alice

Marge,

I will put the Jerez material in folder section. Somehow it is not as easy to upload stuff as last site but nevertheless I will do so. However, I have a ton of material on Jerez courtesy of various genealogists (de la Torre and Hoyo). Since it is pain to put all of this in, I would rather have you tell me what years or centuries you are interested in. The de la Torre apellido is often found in these documents. It seems pointless to upload all I have if you are specifically interested in a particular time frame.

For me it is a time issue but I would like to help.

I also have the book, "Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara Antiguo Obispado de la Nueva Galicia, Expedientes de la serie de Matrimonios extractos Siglos XVII-XVIII." This book lists marriage dispensations in the 17th and 18th Century in some of the "RANCHOS" areas, e.g. Aguacalientes, Valparaiso, etc. It is indexed for names. Agueda del Rio or de la Torre was not listed.
