Colonial Spanish Terms

Searching the Internet for translations of some pretty archane words I have run across in older Spanish colonial documents, I came across a great resource... Compilation of Colonial Spanish Terms and Document Related Phrases Compiled and edited by Ophelia Marquez and Lillian Ramos Navarro Wold and published by SHAAR. It is posted on their website at:

Arturo that brings up another but related topic. Right now I can't
access this site which all of us have found very very valuable:

if it is only me and the site is really not down how can we do something
similar and make this site available on the nuestrosranchos.org site?
There is sooo much space available for us to upload and was hoping that
we could host this as well if it wouldn't be an outrageous amount of work.

ps: Duke University actually owns a hard copy of this dictionary but it
is ashame that it is in general circulation and the pages are crumbling.

Joseph, Esther:

I was just using the Cubas dictionary yesterday and the link worked fine. I tried a couple of the Colegio de Mexico server URLs and most of them did not bring up a page. They must be having server problems.

When the page comes back up, we can consider mirroring the dictionary on our site. Their setup is pretty good in terms of having the index with hyperlinks to the corresponding page image, etc. If we can get them to share the HTML and JPEG files that would be ideal. Otherwise, someone will have to manually steal the code from their site.

Comentario

Thanks Arturo.

I love that dictionary and when it goes down I think that one day it
won't come back. If there is an easy way I'd love to host the site
(mirror as you said) as a back up on the nuestrosranchos.org site so
there will be a kind of back up. I guess we'll have to contact them for
permission.

thanks again,

joseph

Hello and Happy Memorial Day weekend to all US members.

Does anybody know what happened to Cubas's Diccionario Geografico, Historico y Biografico??

It seems to be missing again from it's home site at http://biblio2.colmex.mx/bibdig/dicc_cubas/base3.htm

Anybody seen it lately?

Comentario

I've noticed that the site hasn't worked for weeks now, and I'm not sure why. The best I can offer is this link on Google Books: http://tinyurl.com/3rgomg2 . This link is for the first volume only. It does allow you to download the volume in a (very large) .pdf file.

I hope the site comes back soon!

what does "complete" mean? I've looked for Jalpa in the Zacatecas page but isn't listed as a separate municipality, nor is it found in some of the neighboring areas. I didn't find other cities like Tlaltenango as well, which makes me wonder there is still information to be loaded. Or if all that's available has been loaded, then there are places with missing records. I also did a search for Jalpa and didn't find it at all.

It's a shame if this turns out to be the case.

Remember although complete records are always missing. Due to fire, natural disaster,
war and many records that were never microfilm. The church only microfilmed the
places (for the census) that were in the Archivo General de la Nacion. More than
likely these places are not stored in the AGN in Mexico City.

Comentario

I did some searching to try to find out how complete the 1930 census is, while there is a book by Lyman Pratt on Latin American census records in general (including Mexico), I found nothing specific.

The microfilms that were indexed and available online are copies of the records in the Archivo General de la Nación in Mexico City.

The 1930 Census is described as the "most complete" census of Mexico, nothing I found has any information on how complete it it.

I looked in the Family History Library catalog for census records. There is no one search that will give you a list of all the microfilm numbers for this specific set of records. You need to search by locality (municipality, not state), which I did for the areas you mentioned, and there apparently are no films.

I took a look at the online films, as they are divided by state, municipality, and then town. I went though all the municipalities and town listed for Zacatecas, Tlaltenango and Jalpa are not there.

I have many Araiza and Ladron de Guevara in the South of Jalisco that
married with the main lastnames of my study.
But most of them I find in the 1800s.
The oldest person I have is Laureana ARAIZA maried to Miguel M Espinosa de
los Monteros and Ricardo Ladron de Guevara late 1800's in our about Autlan.
One of my elders told me that the original last name is:

Araizá y no Araiza

Hope we can find out how they arrived to the South of Jalisco.

Hola Martha:

Where are images for Nochistlan Marriages 1628-1633?

Hi all!
Does anyone know where I can find images for the records in Nochistlan, marriages between 1628 and 1633? They seem to be out of order at Familysearch.

I found your records! But before I tell you where, here's what I did.

I looked up your people in the old Family Search, and it said they were on film 226724 (batch M606255). When I opened the film for 1627-86, I noted that it had the film number 226724, so it should be the right film. It started at the right time, but your people aren't at the beginning.

I then looked at the first film of baptisms (as these are sometimes together with the early marriages). The film had a different FHL number. So they shouldn't be there. I then looked at the next film of marriages; it also had a different FHL number, so they couldn't be there, and had to be on the marriages film for 1627-86.

The beginning of the film did not have page numbers, so it is not ibvious that pages are missing, but the data were sequential, so that is unlikely.

I scanned through the film, and discovered it is at least two volumes (volume 2 starts at image 181). The beginning date was earlier than the ending date

Thanks Jonathan, for letting us know about this wonderful news!
I just checked it and it looks like it has most of the microfilms from Zacoalco de Torres. This is great, since up to 70% percent of my family lines are from this area in Jalisco. I can see Atenguillo, Lagos de Moreno, Tlajomulco, Sayula, Guadalajara, Atotonilco el Bajo, you name it.

wills, and Land grants here in the future.

Hi, so, where are exactly these Dispensas Matrimoniales from Jalisco?
Are they under one these paths mixed with other records?:

Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records > Guadalajara > Diócesis de Guadalajara > Matrimonios

Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records > Guadalajara > Sagrario Metropolitano > Información matrimonial

The way I understand it, any couple that got married would be listed under Matrimonios and Información Matrionial, but only those who were somehow releated would be under Dispensas matrimoniales.

Hello Raquel (prima),
I have also found that some of my folks were not administered last rights due to "por la violencia de su muerte" - or - "por ser su muerte violenta"...

I don't think it means the a person was murdered, per se, but rather it was a term used when the death was sudden and unexpected. The cases that I've found referred to cases of: 1) died giving birth, 2) died of sudden sickness, and 3) drowning or a similar act that brought sudden death and the priest didn't arrive in time to take confession and administer rights.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for responding, Claudia. I have thought of that it could be due to

By the way, I've located more records for my Diego Ruiz family, but still no

I have found several of my ancestors died during Indian attacks on the caravans going north or south on the "Royal Road". They were so far away from any settled place that they were buried in mass graves, and a list of the murdered were given to the priest who recorded their deaths at the hands of "los indios barbaros".

Raquel,

I found it I think in "defunciones" for Juarez, Chihuahua, and the villages in the lower El Paso Valley (Socorro, San Elizario, Ysleta) below the current El Paso, TX. I would find comments like (I am paraphrasing the Spanish) "buried in a common grave". I guess whoever came along and found the massacred bodies knew who they were or they had their names on documents they carried, and from there a list was made to give to the priest. I guess whoever found them said a few words over them before they were buried, but they did not receive extreme unction (the last sacrament), or whatever.

My ancestors who settled from Chihuahua to Northern New Mexico (Taos, Santa Fe, etc) were mostly soldiers assigned to the various "presidios" along El Camino Real (Parral, Janos, San Elizario). They patrolled and escorted folks over these roads to provide security and safety, but if a party struck out on their own without military escort, they were often ambushed by Apaches. Often whole

Emilie,
I've experienced the same thing researching defunciones of those times in Nuevo Leon around the Monterrey area.  When entire villages or ranchos were attacked, I have come across several pages containing the names of the dead including women, children, esclavos, and other "indios" from indigineous groups different from the attackers .  It's quite sad, but I have to remind myself that we were the interlopers.

I was stuck just like you on an uncle of mine. It turned out that since I did have the date and location that I found that he was given another name at birth. His parents never bothered to change the records when they decided to call him something else. Check the parents names of the kids born on that date.

Hello everyone I am stuck find information on my wife’s side of the family. Barrios is my wife’s last name. Nothing more would please my father-in-law to know what day and where his father was born (he barely knew his father). My father-in-law thinks he was born in 1915.

New records for the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Morelos, and Puebla were

Coverage varies for these states (not all towns are included), and not all
records for each posted town are included.

Michoacan is included with Guanajuato.

Thank you George:

Eventhough FamilySearch has not uploaded all the records for Michoacan or Guanajuato it
is step, at least it has begun. Guanjuato: Im glad places like Santa Fe de Guanajuato,
San Felipe, SIlao and Salamanca have uploaded decent records. Some very important
lines established themselves in these parts. I can't wait until Michoacan in the future.
Puebla de los Angeles (Zaragoza) is also a very important archive that we can now view online.

I was hoping for Romita, San Francisco del Rincon, Leon, and Silao. There's just a little from Silao ... I guess I'll just have wait a little longer!

In the meantime, I've been looking at the Aguascalientes government archives. Some of the wills are real interesting, and quite useful!

I also await San Francisco del Rincon, Leon and the rest of Silao.
Nuestra Senora de Guanajuato (the other parish in Guanajuato) is also
very important. This and Santa Fe are extremely important in studying
the Obispado de Michoacan. I will await the day when Valladolid
de Michoacan (Morelia) is posted. I saw the uploaded couple of
church documents.

Some of the families I enjoy studying are the Marquesado de San Juan
de Rayas, Marquesado de San Clemente, Condado de La Valenciana
important families from Guanajuato.

Glad to see they are adding Guanajuato and Michoacan film. I was excited to see they started adding these major states. I kind of glanced through the films. I'm was hoping they had more of Silao. Hopefully they can add more film from there quickly. Adding Romita and Penjamo are om my wish list too. My mom's side is from there. As for Michoacan, couldn't seem to find Zapote de Parras. Maybe its under a different town? My Grandmother was born there, but went back to Guanajuato.

Salvador,

Thank you for your very well written explanation of how modern Mexico evolved, especially since I don't think English is your first language. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Americans like me whose father came to the US in 1913 at the age of 10 really have a poor understanding of Mexico.

I am going to edit what you wrote to include the exact dates that the various Mexican presidents served (that will force me to learn more Mexican history) and pass it around to others who need a clear and concise telling of the story of Mexico.

Since I joined NuestrosRanchos, I've been "plowing," through papers, some dating back to 1996 that reference Tino's ancestry. I came across a description/listing of the "capitulos," in the book that you mentioned by Vazquez y Frias. I found one that looked promising, and I would appreciate it if you could/would check it out. I've listed it below...

Gloria,

I have both books, Jose Luis' book is mostly Geneaology with a couple of indexes one for all the names and one for the chapters.

The other book, Nochistlan Zacatecas has much historical data with a multitude of Duran family trees and groups of families, some census data for 1879, data on the diocese of Guadalajara, a diagram of the original blueprint of the town of Nochistlan. A diagram of the forts and fortifications that existed in May of 1864 during the battle with the French. It has a list of the political leaders of Nochistlan from 1853-1885. It has land owners and deed holders for the year 1876 and the taxes they paid. It lists all the ranchos that belonged to the curate of Nochistlan in July of 1896. Also listed is a list of all the Presbiters from 1619 through 1693.

It also lists some history of El Teul, Apulco, Juchipila, Yahualica, Mexticacan, Teocaltiche, Jalpa, Tlaltenango, Santa Maria de Los Lagos, Tenayuca, Toyahua, Ichipalco and Aguascalientes.

I'd appreciate it if you would check Moctezuma, Navarro, Gabay and Ruiz de Esparza. I've never found an exact birthdate for Petronila de Moctezuma, only the year 1550.

I'm often surprised at the new twists and turns I find on Familysearch. I've entered my ancestor Ana Diez de Equinoa before. But this time I left off the final "a." and came up with entirely different results. I thought Familysearch took into account minor spelling variations.

I see her name also spelled Ana Dias de Equino.

This leads me to believe that Equinoa might today be Aquino. Can any of you with greater expertise in Basque names tell me if this is correct?

Have you had a chance to see Connie Dominguez' files in Nuestros Ranchos database, especially under Simon Ruiz de Esparza. She references all of the above in her genealogies.

I would love to see your powerpoint presentation. Too bad you can't make it to the group meeting in July. That would be a great complement to the book's presentation.

Now I'm going to ask a very stupid question but what is "papaqui's? While I was born just outside of Nochistlan, I lived in Mexico up until I was 2½ years of age so I would say my recollection is just about nil.

I have been to Nochistlan a total of 5 times, the first time in 1977, the second time to accompany my mother to her father's funeral in the 80's but the longest and most endearing trip was in September 2004 for las Fiestras Patronales de San Agustin and that was for 2 weeks when we spent it with my Olmos cousins who live in Tlachichila, one is a teacher and the other is a veterinarian. Ernie, there are 9 1/2 pages in Jose Luis Vazquez' Navarro-Moctezuma family genealogy, I'm sending you a scan of the first page. If it is clear, I can scan the remainder for you tomorrow. If it is not clear, I'll have to try a better scanner, since the remaining pages have print that is much smaller. Let me know if this first page is legible. Unfortunately there are no birth dates given for Petronila. She may be my ancestor also, though I'm missing a link or two. FamilySearch is sometimes a problem, especially when researching names with interchangeable c's, s's and z's, or a surname like URSUA. FS won't recognize the sounds as similar or interchangeable, eg Orsua, Urzua, Orçua, Horzua. They all require separate searches. We just try all the variations we can think of. Here's one that threw me - VIOA - I finally realized that it was ULLOA! Also occasionally some priests

This is a general message to the group about attachments in emails. The
way the system is set up there are no attachments allowed in emails as
they will be stripped and the text only will arrive. So what to do????

well if it is something like a picture or scan then go to the Albums
area of the group and if there is an existing folder that your material
would fit in (probably Misc Records and Other) then click on it to open
it and then either create a new subfolder or click on one of the
existing folders. Once this is open then click on "add a photo" and
follow the directions.

That sounded like a lot but it only took two sentences to say (well one
was a run-on wasn't it?). If it really comes down to it and you've tried
and failed then email moderator@nuestrosranchos.org or me at
makas@nc.rr.com and I'll upload the files for you.

I have just added my name to some of the existing film numbers for Momax, Jerez, Atolinga, and Tlaltenango which I have on long term.

Since I live within walking distance (not that I would walk it!!!) to the Family History Center I would be happy to make hard copies of any records members would find with "batch numbers", and send you the copy.

I have about 21 films for Tlaltenango, 9 for Momax, and 1 each for Jerez, and Atolinga.

I have 6 films of death records, and 3 baptisms without batch numbers for Tlaltenango. If I am able to find those batch numbers, then I will add these films to the list.

Currently, I am at a "brick wall" with my research so,

It is amazing to see in familysearch.org the full Dispensas shown on the Sagrada Mitra book by Ma. de la Luz Montejano Hilton(MLMH), with the signatures some of our ancestors. Maybe we could make the task a little easier for all of us if every week or so we post to which images of FAMILYSEARCH correspond the SAGRADA MITRA records, since the latter seem to ordered acording to when do they show up on the film. So if you have a film with 1200 images, maybe you can figure out by these postings that the record you are lookng for is for examplee between images 700 and 900.
This is what I have found so far:
MLMH #10 corresponds to Diócesis de Guadalajara > Matrimonios 1635-1692 > Images 43-48 (FHL film 167971)
MLMH #32 corresponds to Diócesis de Guadalajara > Matrimonios 1635-1692 > Images 145-140 (FHL film 167971)
MLMH #62 corresponds to Diócesis de Guadalajara > Matrimonios 1681-1687 > Images 18-22 (FHL film 167972)

George-

Is Luz Montejano's book available? Over a year ago I contacted Borderland Books and was informed that the book was not available, but hopefully soon a re-issuance would occur, and that I would be contacted. No word yet.

Luz Montejano's "Archivo de la Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara" gives references to the films where she extracted the data in her book. At least some (perhaps all?) of these references are to the LSD Family History Library microfilm numbers.

At least some of the films are now posted with the Guadalajara, Jalisco records. I've looked up a few, and they are in the Guadalajara, Diocese of Guadalajara, Matrimonios group of films.

If you have the microfilm reference from Luz

I have looked for it periodically, but it is not available. I use the copy at the UC Berkeley/Bancroft Library, which is about 35 miles from where I live.

It would be wonderful if the book could be reprinted; I'm sure it would sell well. From the library citation it looks like it was published privately by the author. Perhaps if a Nuestros Ranchos member knows the author, he or she could make the request!

There are a few libraries that have it; mostly university libraries. To find libraries, follow the link

From your Nuestros Rancho's profile, your two closest libraries are the University of California, Riverside (UCR), and the Los Angeles Public Library. At UCR you may need to be a UC alumni (or purchase a library card, if possible). At the LA Public Library I'm sure it is a non-circulating reference.
