As one of several administrators of this NuestrosRanchos website, I recently began summarizing stats of how often this website is accessed.  

Daily member logins are only a small portion of how often this site is visited and utilized.  NuestrosRanchos is considered a high-traffic website.

The large number of website visits ( shared below) are a tribute to those original members that founded this site back in 2003. 

The founding members obviously recoqnized the value and need for sharing historical and genealogical information related to Jalisco and adjacent regions. As a result the NuestrosRanchos website is considered very popular. This is accomplised without ads or monthly user fees, which makes this even more impressive.  Even though our registered member base is considered modest (1,750 members), I personally appreciate the efforts of all of our members, and the discussions and input that has been shared over the last 23 years.

I was organizing and going over some documents I have. One of these I came across had some information on Alonso Cornejo, which is titled Familia Paterna y Materna de Sor Juana: hallazgos documentales, by Guillermo Scmidhuber of the University of Guadalajara. He delves into the Cornejo family, specifically Alonso Cornejo. 

A Cristóbal Joseph Gomez Cornejo, on 10 June 1758 solicited documents of relation in reference to the Cornejo Ramirez family. It references a document from the 18th of November, 1676 that was prepared for the family of Joseph Cornejo Ramirez. The author notes a petition which deals with the genealogy of the Cornejo family. In said document, a witness testified  that Capt. Fernando Gordíbar Osorio was the paternal grandfather of said Joseph Cornejo, for which this information is provided, and he (Gordíbar Osorio) was a descendent of the first conquistadores. On p.66 he states, “Existe un documento de ‘Filiación’ referente a los Cornejo Ramírez que comprende 85 folios probatorios de ser cristianos viejos y de su limpieza de sangre; fue solicitado por Christóbal Joseph Gómez Cornejo el 10 de junio de 1758, en Jalostotitlán, Nueva Galicia.” It adds, “la petición fue concedida y se preparó la copia notarial de varios documentos de la familia de Joseph Cornejo Ramírez, primo de Juana Inés, que establecían la genealogía de sus progenitores para lograr contraer matrimonio. El documento copiado lleva la fecha de 20 de noviembre de 1676, y varios testigos afirman que don Diego Ramírez y doña Inés de Brenes vivieron en Sanlúcar de Barrameda, en el pozo de Marquillos (de quienes partió la estirpe mexicana, fueron los bisabuelos de Juana Inés y sus primos).  Con fecha del 18 de noviembre de 1676 acude el y pobladores de este Reino de Nueva España, que y cargos de Justica y Guerra, que ejercieron con primer testigo: Juan Caballero, maestro de cirugía, y testifica que “el Capitán Fernando Gordíbar Osorio, abuelo paterno del susodicho Joseph Cornejo, por quien se hace esta información, fue hijo y descendiente de los primeros conquistadores pasaron a él y sirvieron a su Majestad a su costa y mención en la conquista de este Reino con sus armas y caballos, por lo que fueron ocupados por lo señores excelentísimos Virreyes de ella, en puestos toda rectitud y puntualidad” (Folio 10).”

As I have shared in other media, a Toribio Hernández de Arellano from Salamanca is documented, whose brother Sebastián initiated litigation concerning his nobility on May 15, 1557. Following Sebastián's death in 1568, his widow and children continued the legal proceedings. Significantly, the presence of the Sánchez surname within their lineage may account for its recurrence among Toribio's immediate descendants.

Sebastián Hernández de Arellano "El Viejo" was a resident of the parish (colación) of San Isidro in Salamanca. He held estates (hacendado) in the municipalities of Villares de la Reina, Castellanos de Moriscos, and Villamayor. He initiated a lawsuit to assert his noble status (hijodalgo) after being appointed to the position of procurador, an office typically associated with commoners (pecheros), which he argued was incompatible with his noble standing.

The relevant legal file (Sala de Hijosdalgo. Caja 0774.0035. Real Chancillería de Valladolid) records testimony stating that Sebastián was married to Isabel Rodríguez and was the father of Antonio, Jerónimo, Sebastián "El Mozo", and Luisa (PARES | Archivos Españoles, to request the file, follow the link and email the Real Chancillería de Valladolid).

His parents were identified as Sebastián Hernández (arrendador), and Águeda Sánchez, both of whom were described as being of noble origin.

His paternal grandfather was Luis Hernández, a resident of Santiuste street in Salamanca who also maintained a residence in Villamayor. In both jurisdictions, he was exempt from taxation due to his "notorious nobility" (notoria hidalguía) and held the offices of sexmero and alcalde de la Santa Hermandad. Luis Hernández was married to Isabel Sierra.

His great-grandfather was Marcos Hernández, a doublet-maker (jubetero) married to Francisca Sánchez, both residents of Salamanca. Contemporary witnesses noted that they comported themselves in the "manner of nobles and dressing as such" (hábito y maneras de hidalgos). Marcos Hernández was of Vizcaíno origin and was sometimes referred to as Marcos Vizcaíno.

Toribio Hernandez Arellano Sanchez

Because of the confusion of multiple people with the same name, most people have parts of the genealogy screwed up. Going by what I put together and a puzzle piece by dr. Abraham Haim, an expert on Sephardic genealogy, I have from pre 1300 in Barcelona and Avignon France to Toribio Hernandez de Arellano.

The Jewish ancestry and French ancestry that Mariano Gonzalez Leal says we don't have is this line. Most, if not all, the lines of the founding families' descendants married descendants of Toribio.

This Jewish line is not your typical Sephardic line. This line is Ashkenazic, from France.

Dr Haim put the the piece that said our sanchez line descended through juan Sanchez de calayatud (Isaac Golluf) and not his brother Pedro Sanchez de Calayatud. I knew that Toribios grandfather Alonson Sanchez descended from Alazar Golluf but had originally thought that the descent was though his son Pedro. Dr Haim is the highest authority on these matters so if he says that he descends from Isaac Golluf (Juan Sanchez) then I will go along with him.
Most people also confuse Toribio's grandfather, Alfonso Sanchez(II) with his uncle, Alfonso (1) that was the one that left Aragon, went to Italy, and was burned in effigy.

Trying to fully understand and find what Diaz de Leon branch I come from.

My grandfather was Ismael Diaz de Leon. He was born in El Paso, Tx on 1926. His father was Donaciano Diaz de Leon and mother was Maria Diaz de Leon Romo.

Donaciano and his family lived in Aguascalientes for many yrs and moved to El Paso, Tx where he worked on the trains and railroads until he fell ill.

He moved his family back to Aguascalientes and died soon after, I would guess he died around around 1928 or 29 (at a relatively yound age mid 30s) because my grandfather was 2+ yrs old when he passed.

Grandfather (Ismael) married Sara Fernandez in Aguascalientes and eventually made his way back to El Paso in the mid to late 50's and started his family.

Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Many genealogists have Luis Lopez Ramirez and Sebastian Lopez Ramirez as brothers because Jaime Holcombe incorrectly  stated in his cartas that they were brothers.  They have even put this false information on wikitree and stated that it was a fact.  These two men are related through marriage, but they aren't brothers. I won’t go into how they are related by marriage here in order to not confuse the issue as my intent here is to show that they aren't brothers.

Luis Lopez Ramirez is the son of Luis Lopez and Isabel Sanchez.  This Luis Lopez Ramirez is married to Catalina Rubio, daughter of Pedro Hernandez and Maria Rubio.

Sebastian Lopez Ramirez, aka Sebastian Ramirez, is the son of Andres Lopez and Isabel Ramirez, and Sebastian’s wife, Ana de la Cueva aka Ana de la Cueva y Sandoval, is the daughter of Pedro Garcia de la Cueva and Maria Teresa Sandoval (Pedro is the son of Alonso Hernandez de Rebollar and Maria Hernandez de la Cueva).

Andres is the son of Alvaro Lopez and Catalina Lopez.

Alvaro Lopez is the son of Sancho (Sanchu) Lopez and Beatriz Gonzalez, and his wife Catalina is the daughter of Juan Lopez and Ines Lopez. (There are two couples named Juan Lopez and Ines Lopez in the family tree).

The credit for researching these families, and finding the correct genealogies, goes to Jorge Barba Gomez.. 

The evidence for these genealogies can be found in the book “López, López, López, y Otros, Toledanos en la Nueva Galicia” authored by Jorge Barba Gómez, 2025.”   Primary sources that include wills, letters between family members, and marriage dispensations were used to identify the family relationships.

I would like to share a summary of the findings Jorge Barba Gómez and I addressed recently regarding Captain Diego Romo de Vivar (see Facebook).

In 2024, we discovered that the parentage attributed to Captain Diego Romo de Vivar for decades was incorrect. A baptismal record from Rielves, dated March 12, 1589, had been erroneously linked to him due to a paleographic error. That record actually identifies a Diego, son of Diego Alonso (written as "Diego Aº") and Catalina Pérez, not Diego Romo. This distinction is further confirmed by the file INQUISICION,1222,Exp.12.

Our latest research confirms that the Captain, while a resident of San Felipe, Guanajuato, the home of his wife’s family, the Rangel Peguero, had a brother named Alonso de la Fuente in 1630 (see Siglo XVIII Asuntos Varios: Morelia. Registros varios 1630). We have verified that he was indeed his brother, not his brother-in-law.

Furthermore, researcher Manny Diez shared a finding indicating that an Alonso de la Fuente, also a resident of San Luis Potosí, was a native of Torrijos. Given that Torrijos is only a few kilometers from Rielves and Fuensalida, this aligns geographically with where the Romo, Rincón, and Vivar surnames are concentrated.

In these surrounding villages, we also find the Fuentes de Fuensalida family (potentially "de la Fuente") intermarried with the Rincón, Romo, and Vivar lines For instance, Juan de Fuentes, who married Inés del Rincón, was the son of Pedro Rico and María Romo (PARES | Archivos Españoles). These families claimed kinship with one another in Nueva Galicia, forming a complex family network that spanned several towns, including Fuensalida, Rielves, Torrijos, Escalonilla, Quismondo, Borox and Maqueda.

These findings also highlight the importance of reviewing the link between this family and Captain Diego de la Fuente Rincón of San Luis Potosí, who was married to Teresa Pérez de Bocanegra y Arizmendi Gogorrón.

It is interesting to note that there is extensive information on line showing that his wife Mariana Gomez de Portugal is a direct descendant of King Manual the 1^st of Portugal, although illegitimate.

In search of any Jauregui descendants that  originated in Nochistlan then carried over to Mexticacan & Cañadas Jalisco.  Ancestor Nicolas de Jauregui, from Los Yugos Cañadas, born around 1790, is who we are researching.  Married 1st wife, Petra Gomez. 2nd wife, Juana Yniguez. Searching for  maternal & paternal records for Nicolas Jauregui as his mother was recorded as Juana de Jauregui. He must have taken his mother's surname. 

I have completed my fourth book, titled De Nobleza Inmemorial, which documents families of proven nobility from Nueva Galicia and New Spain. This is a book of which I am particularly fond of, as I have been able to present substantiated new information through properly referenced documentation.

For example, I trace the Fernández de Balduz family to its origins using a lawsuit filed by Antonio Fernández de Balduz against Miguel de Mirafuentes, which meticulously documents the family's genealogy. This work also identifies the Fernández de Balduz as a cadet branch of the House of Mirafuentes.

I began my genealogy journey several years back researching my maternal grandfather's line.  My grandfather's mother (my great-grandmother) is originally from Ciudad Guzman (dob 1874) and had the maiden name of "Aguallo." A dear uncle of mine (now departed) would tell me stories about her maiden name and how it was linked to a small town (Nochistlan).  

During the COVID shutdown I followed the "aguallo" line back to the mid 1750's in Ciudad Guzman (Zapotlan Grande).  I found records (baptisms, marriage and death) on Family Search belonging to the "aguallo" line.  The oldest direct relative I found in Ciudad Guzman was Jose Vizente Ferrer de Aguayo (married in 1779), originally from Nochistlan, per his IM (a kind soul/wikitree moderator found the unindexed IM).  Unfortunately, I hit a wall at the time and could not find any additional documents for Jose Vizente Ferrer (ie a baptism record).  His marriage registry and IM identify one Antonio Mergil/Margil de Aguayo as his father (and Maria Tereza Yanez as his mother) but that's where the confusion remains (wikitree lists my Antonio Margil with another as an "unmerged match").  From Jose Vizente Ferrer's IM, specifically a testigo (Clemente de Aguayo, likely a uncle/cousin), I was able to indirectly zero-in on the Nochistlan family cluster but, again, no direct connection.  Frustrated at the time, I set this line aside until very recently.  

Does anyone in the group have any ancestors that were involved in Spain's role of assisting during the American Revolution?

As many of us have come to realize, the traditional genealogy connecting Lázaro Martín del Campo to Revilla del Campo is likely incorrect. 

Emerging evidence suggests that Bartolomé Martín del Campo and Lázaro Martín del Campo are two distinct individuals with no proven relation. While it was previously claimed that Lázaro was the same Bartolomé baptized in Revilla del Campo in 1605, the chronology is inconsistent. 

As Alfonso Martín del Campo Loza noted in his book "Memoria Documental y Gráfica de mi Apellido Martin del Campo", Lázaro was already established in Teocaltiche by 1618 and was a widower of Isabel Sánchez de Lara by 1623. A child baptized in 1605 could not have been a widower in 1623 with an established presence in Nueva Galicia by 1618. 

Recent findings point toward Herencia as the true origin: 

1) 1608 Record: I previously shared a 1608 record from Herencia showing a Lázaro Martín del Campo and his wife, María Díaz, acting as godparents: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6S69-D5H?view=fullText…;

2) The "Miguel Díaz" Connection: Jorge Barba identified that Miguel, a son of Lázaro Martín del Campo and María López de la Cruz, was registered as "Miguel Díaz" in the 1650 Jalostotitlán Census (Padrón). 

3) The Marriage Link: Jorge Barba subsequently located a marriage record dated February 8, 1587, in Herencia for the Lázaro Martín del Campo I found (son of Francisco Martín del Campo and Teresa Rodríguez) and María Alonso (Díaz). It is of utmost importance to mention that María’s parents were Miguel Díaz Avilés and Mari Díaz. 

While we cannot yet definitively prove the link, the timeline is highly compelling. 

If the Lázaro from Nueva Galicia was born circa 1590 to the couple in Herencia, he would have been 28 in Teocaltiche (1618) and a widower at 33 (1623).

Dated 28 Sep 1674, it’s regarding a dispute between Juana Tavera (widow of Jacinto de Lariz) and Capitan Andres Ramirez de Cueva. To establish their claims, the two had to present land titles and other documentation, so we’re treated to the history of the lands in question, and to the names of all of the people who owned them since the arrival of the Spaniards. There are documents dating back to the founding of Lagos de Moreno - including a copy of the original charter given to Hernando Martel, dated 15 Jan 1563 (image 509). There are also titles that passed through cabildos in 1568 & 1569, which included Lorenzo Alvarez, Luis Lopez, Alonso Macias, Juan Becerra, Toribio Hernandez, and other early notables. Following are some relationships revealed throughout these documents - of interest to me, are those regarding the descendants of Capitan Francisco Tavera. But first, the plaintiffs and their claims:

Andres Ramirez de Cueva inherited his sitio from his parents, Sebastian Ramirez cc Ana de Cueva Herrera y Sandoval, who in turn, purchased it from Madre Luisa de San Juan, religiosa del Convento de la Limpia Concepcion in Mexico City, who inherited it from her parents, Antonio de Mena y Delgadillo cc Beatriz de Herrera; Antonio de Mena was son of Capn. Hernando de Mena cc Maria Delgadillo, who was daughter of Francisco de Mata cc Isabel de Vellosillo, who were early pobladores of Lagos and the original owners of the sitio, and who bequeathed it to their son, Padre Pedro de Mena clerigo, who bequeathed it to his nephew, Antonio de Mena. There’s also talk of another piece of land that passed through the hands of Nicolas de Esquivel and brothers Casimiro y Diego Lopez de Lara, though I only skimmed through that part.

Reading back through the archives I found a post that states Mr Jaime Holcomb believed Pedro Ortiz de Anda (born c1560) was the natural son of Pedro de Anda Altamirano (c1535-1619). 

He also believed Isabel Ortiz de Anda (cc Pedro Gómez de Portugal), Pedro Ortiz de Anda (cc Ana Ramírez) and Catalina Ortiz de Anda (cc Esteban de Pastrano) were all also natural children (born outside of marriage) of the above Pedro Ortiz de Anda. 

Has there been any research on this family recently that validates or disproves Mr Holcomb's views?

My family is descended from three of the four (Juana, Gaspar and Joachin), so the question of their identity is important to us. 

I originally proposed some or all of them were Isabel's children by a previous relationship. I was wrong. Newly discovered information now verifies the relationships between Juana, Joachin and Gaspar Gómez, as well as sets the estimated dates of birth for Juana and Gaspar back considerably to be more in line with the date of birth of Isabel Gómez AKA Ortiz. She cannot be their mother, but may instead be their sister. 

A 1709 Dispensa Matrimonial establishes:

• Juana Gómez and Gaspar Gómez are hermanos.
• Joachin Gómez is Juana's son and Gaspar's nephew.
• Gaspar Gómez is married to Magdalena de Ayala AKA Gutiérrez AKA del Vargas (as seen in the 1669 padrón), and they share a son named Antonio.
• Maria Gómez is daughter of Joachin Gómez and Juana de Ysassi, and is granddaughter of Juana Gomez. She and her cousin, Antonio Gómez, are engaged to be married.

He encontrado encontrado en la pagina de

que Bernardina Mendoza, esposa de Gonzalo Nuñez de Sotomayor, fue
descendiente de Inés Alvarez de Toledo y esta última
fue descendiente de los duques de Alba. esto me parece muy interesante
ya que Bernardina Mendoza es mi ancestro, pero
las fechas de nacimiento no son lógicas ya que Bernardina Mendoza
tiene como año de nacimiento el 1533 y Luis Hurtado
de Mendoza (esposo de Inés Alvares de Toledo) tiene como año de
nacimiento el 1500. como se ve en 33 años no pueden existir 4 generaciones.
Mis preguntas hacia el foro son, ¿habrá un error en las fechas? o
¿simplemente no hay relación entre Bernardina Mendoza y Luis Hurtado de
Mendoza?

Agradesco la aclaración que presten a mi gran duda.
