Polonia Torres Y Nicolas Ramirez -15th century

Hi Steph:

The original founders of Lagos were families from Teocaltiche. You might
want to look in that area also.

Hello Stephanie,

I don't know who the parents of Nicolás Ramírez or Polonia de Torres were,
but have some other information about this family that may be of interest to
you. Nicolás Ramírez was the owner of "Hacienda de las Peñuelas" and one of
the founders of Aguascalientes in 1575. His name is in founder's square in
the historical district of Aguascalientes. Both Nicolás and Polonia were
originally from Santa María de los Lagos, Jalisco, but lived in
Aguascalientes.

Hi Bill, good to hear from you :)

Thanks for the info on Nicolas because it confirms what I have. Do you think there are any papers from the Hacienda de las Peñuelas which would list his wife and her parents or thier marriage? Any leads for that would be great. Also,as I told, John Gonzalez, I have looked in the Chancerry de Vallodolid with not luck.

thanks again for your time,

Stephanie,

In his book "Aguascalientes y su región de influencia hasta 1810 - Sociedad y Política" historian José Antonio Gutiérrez Gutiérrez mentions that before the founding of Aguascalientes in 1575, Nicolás Ramírez, Cristobal de Mata, Francisco Gómez and Menzo López had been granted some land, which I suppose is where "Hacienda de las Peñuelas" is located. The earliest church records of Aguascalientes start in the early 1600s, so none of the baptismal records of the children of Nicolás Ramírez and Polonia de Torres are in the books. We know they had at least nine children, all born in Aguascalientes. Some of them used the surname Tavera, so there is one clue about their grandparents' surname. As you probably know, using the surname of a grandparent was not uncommon in those days. There are marriage records from Aguascalientes where there is information about some of their children. For example the marriage of their daughter María de Tavera to Phelipe Macías Valadez on 01 July

I do not know how reliable this list is but I found a list of some of the founding families on the internet from the "Santa Maria De Los Lagos" by Alfredo Moreno Gonzalez: I do not see any TORRES but there is a TAVERA DE LA VEGA so maybe that is Polonia Torre's relative.

Hi Bill and Stephanie in my records I have Maria the one who married Felipe de Macias y Valades, as

Maria Ramirez de Tavera y Velasco o Maria Tavera y Velasco? How does the Velasco play in this? I have a suspicion

one of her paternal grandmother was Velasco, since she didnt use Torre, her mothers surname, while her other sisiters took

on there mothers surname? Tavera can also be Portuguese Tavira. But Castilianised would be Tavera, Tavira is a portuguese town near Sevilla. I think we also have to look at how the surnames were distributed in this family.

Usually Torres and de la Torre are the same

Apolonia Torres

Francisca Torres

Antonio Ramirez de Tavera

Maria Ramirez de Tavera or Maria Tavera y Velasco

Out of all the girls Maria took her paternal name. Usually for importance or after a grandmother. We need to keep researching, but what since Antonio took Ramirez, Nicolas' parents could be a Antonio Ramirez de

Hey Ronnie,

The marriage record of Phelipe Macías Valadez and María de Tavera clearly
states that the parents of Phelipe were Alonso Macías Valadez and María de
Retamosa. I cannot access the record online because the Family Search Pilot
site is down for maintenance, but here is what I extracted from microfilm
about this couple (LDS Film 0299421 Aguascalientes Marriages 1601-1662) :

"El 1 de julio de 1618 contrajo matrimonio Phelipe Macías Valadés, hijo de
Alonso Macías Valadés y de María de Retamosa, con María de Tavera, hija de
Nicolás Ramírez y de Polonia de Torres, vecinos de Aguascalientes. Testigos

Fueron padrinos María de Torres y Antonio Tavera, hermanos de la pretensa."

The submitter, a member of the LDS Church whose name does not appear in the

Hi Bill and Ronnie, I have the same as Bill, Felipe is clearly son of Alonso and Maria. I
think the person did not know two Alonso existed in this family Alonso I "el tio" and Alonso II el sobrino. The last one marrying Maria de Velasco, I have her name like that but clearly used Ramirez de Tavera or just Tavera. I think the testigos were Alonso' cousins, Alonso and Francisco.

Im confused, Maria de Torres and Maria Tavera are different? Im sure the person was confused about the two Alonso being the same one. Ill keep looking, I do have a source, Alonso and Nicolas were brothers. -Daniel Camino

The marriage record of Phelipe Macías Valadez and María de Tavera reads
"Fueron padrinos María de Torres y Antonio Tavera, hermanos de la pretensa."
I believe it refers to Mariana de Torres and Antonio Tavera, younger brother

Alonso Macías and Francisco Macías, both Phelipe's brothers.

I have looked at the Historia de Teocaltiche but there is no specefic list of the families who found it. I then looked at the Chancerry de Vallodolid to see if there is a list of families under the founder Hernando Martel and still nothing. This is why I looked in Colima Mexico and found the Polonia Gamboa married to Juan de La torre. If I have missed something that you know of in the resources above, please let me know. Also , do you have any contact info for the Cronista of Lagos de Moreon or Teocaltiche? Hope your research is going well.

Thanks!

Hi Steph:

The idea is that if you are researching a family from Lagos and come to a
brick wall, try researching the same family name, but in Teocaltiche. I
don't know if there is a list of the families, who left to settle in Lagos,
but you could look for the earliest church records for Lagos.

Below you mentioned that : "I have looked at the history of Teocaltiche but
there is no specific list of the families who found it"

You are not looking for the families who founded Teocaltiche, you want the
families FROM Teocaltiche who founded Lagos.

This is what Mariano Gonzalez Leal said in "Retoños de España ...". According to his hypothesis Alonso / Nicolas and Leonor / Maria are the same people mentioned with indistinct names on "Dispensas" that other researchers in the past consulted (Jaime Holcombe, Davila Garibi). However, in the same chapter (Valadez Macias) there are at least two or three errors.

Juan de Onate expedition

What microfilms and other records do I need to research to find more information about the families that traveled to New Mexico from Zacatecas around 1598?

Comentarios

Comentario

Hi Stanley:

The Oñate expedition sounds familiar to me because many of my ancestors took part or were related to it.

Firstly, Juan de Oñate is my far uncle because his father Cristóbal de Oñate was the brother of my ancestor María Pérez de Oñate who was married to Rodrigo Díaz de Zaldívar. Also Juan de Oñate's mother is my ancestor too but I descend from her first marriage to Ruy Díaz de Mendoza y Arellano del Río of a very illustrious family, then she married to Cristóbal de Oñate.

Another of my ancestors, Juan Guerra de Ressa, although he didn't took part in the expediton he was the main economic financier of it.

Two other ancestors where actively in the expediton, their names where Alonso de Sosa Albornoz and Vicente de Zaldívar. Also an uncle, Juan de Velasco y Zúñiga son of my ancestors Alonso de Velasco and Juana Bernal de Zúñiga y Guzmán was an important character in that journey.

The site that Paul gave to you is perfect. It's very well detailed, I think it will help

Good Afternoon, Stanley,

My wife is a direct descendent of Bartoleme Romero, who was one of the men of the 1598 Onate party. He was from Corral de Almaguer, a small town near Toledo, Spain.

Have you gone to Gary Felix's web site? It is garyfelix.tripod.com. You will find there a list of the men who accompanied Onate

Hi Josie --

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I would be very interested in any upcoming events.

I don't have roots in Brownsville or Matamoros; my wife's family does though (Cisneros, Villarreal, Longoria families). However, I am a descendant of various founding families from Mier, Tamaulipas through my ggg grandparents, Tomas Ramirez and Concepcion, who moved from Mier to Laredo, TX in the 1890s. These families had land grants in South Texas dating from the 1760s, although at least my ancestors lost or sold their portion in the 1890s for reasons that aren't yet clear.

Please keep me posted on any upcoming events!

According to Wikipedia Matamoros wasn't even a villa until 1864 so if the
record you are looking exists it would have been recorded in a church
somewhere other than Matamoros. That is why there are no records for
Matamoros in the years you are looking for.

Traditional Foods in Mexico origin from Jewish?

In our village of Huejuquilla during Holy Week, we have "La Judea" festivities. During this week, we eat, "Capirotada" also we eat Pan Semanita. But I was looking at this article I just saw:

Today I had albóndigas for dinner (in the afternoon, Mexican style) and they are what in English people call meatballs. According to the Spanish Royal Academy Dictionary, the name in Spanish is derived from Arabic (like other Spanish words that begin with Al-) and they define them as "balls of finely minced meat or fish, mixed with pieces of bread, eggs and spices; eaten cooked or fried".
Like many kinds of food, music, dances, styles of painting, etc., many different groups may claim them as their own.

My grandmother, who was from Jerez, used to make Capirotada when I was a
little girl. I didn't like it or champurado or atole and, worse for me,
camote. I think I could eat capirotada now. :)

According to Tony Hillerman in his book, New Mexico, Rio Grande and other essays, 1993:

Truchas is a double line of adobe houses lining a windy cliffedge under the Truchas Peaks, and Las Trampas is a hollow square inthe narrow valley of Rito las Trampas. They were there when George Washington was born. Truchas was founded by two families, and Trampas by a man named Juan De Arguello. Arguello was seventy-seven years old and a battle-scarred veteran of a long life of frontier wars when he led his sons-in-law and their families from Santa Fe to establish this lonely and dangerous new outpost. The chronicles report that when he was ninety-nine he walked over the mountains to the Penasco Vally to ask donations for the village chapel. He died at 117. Sergio, thank you so much for that information, especially the image number; I was able to go directly to the record.

As an aside, the post of mine to which Sergio replied was probably only my fourth or fifth query to this list; to have been rewarded so quickly is testimony to the collaborative nature of the many wonderful people on the list. I read most of the posts, and I hope I can pay Sergio's kindness forward soon with information from my own research.

Once again, a heartfelt "Thank you".

Ran across your old post dated 5/17/2010. I noticed you list Francisco Dionicio Cuates Bugarin Gonzalez as your 6th Ggrandfather. He was related to me as well being my 4th Grandfather. By this time although I have no way of knowing, you may have learned the reference to "Cuates' in the document (which I observed as well) means he was a fraternal twin. His brother Jose Dionicio Francisco is the other twin.

I apologize if this is old news to you.

I have two lines of Bugarin. The first record
that I have is; as marriage record in Mexico, D.F.
in 1676 then, the family appears in Tlaltenango on
a marriage record in 1709.

I have searched my data base for the names you
indicated, and.. nada...Perhaps, if you go back a
generation or two, we may find a connection.

Also, there are at least two members in the group
that have Bugarin lines, which may be listed in

It could mean born in or national origin. For some reason, I think
Flamenco COULD mean Fleming, as in, he's Flemish originally from
Dunkirk. But I might be wrong. Marge:)

Hello Omar,
I've offered up this Spanish website to the group before because I've found it helpful, but I've never received any feedback positive or otherwise.  Try ascagen.es go to the upper right archivos/bases de datos.  There there's a Transmeranos de Flandes/Los Flamencos de Transmiera section that might prove helpful.  I don't know enough about the history of Spain and what the Flanders connection is, but that's what they refer to here, when they use "Flamenco".  It's confusing, because more specifically, there's a Cantabria connection which includes Santander and has been a great resource researching my family.  Does this make me "Flamenco"?  I don't know.  I hope you find the site interesting at the very least.    Alice

There were many Flemish immigrants to Colonial Mexico, I always see Flandes?
Usually once their descendants integrated fully they would automatically assume
the designation of espanol. European=espanol regardless what nation you came
from, as long as you integrated and "castilianized",

Hi, Omar, most of the definitions I find for "flamenco" refers to Flemish (from Flanders). Gypsy is defined as "gitano", but the dance that the gypsies did was called flamenco also ("dancing for the Flemish").

I have a Flemish ancestor who lived in Mexico City in 1617. His name was Juan Fresqui (Flandes) and he signed his name "Frishz". The name became Fresco, Fresqui, Fresquis, and my most recent ancestors with that name wrote it as Fresquez. Juan Fresqui was a mining engineer from Flanders, and he went to New Mexico in 1625 and settled and married there in Santa Fe.

What was the name of your Flemish ancestor?

King Charles of Carlos the V was Flemish born in the Flemish city of Ghent in
1500 and although he was King of Spain during the Spanish conquest of the
America's, he spoke very little spanish. His mother was Castillian and his
father was Maximilian I.

I have read all sorts of books and documents on Carlos V, this is true in the beginning he
did not speak much Spanish. But he soon grew to love his country Spain, so much he would
give up his german posessions and keep his spanish posessions. He gave up his german
posessions to his brother Ferdinand who became the next German Rman Emperor. Interesting enough
Felipe I his father is recognized as the first modern Spanish king, even though he was German
he was crowned Felipe I de Espana with his wife Juana I. Since she was "la loca" and locked away
her husband ruled for some time in the Castilla posesions. While Carlos Grandfather Fernando
II el catolio ruled Aragon and her posessions until his death, where he passed everything to Carlos.
Carlos V or I is the monarch who united his Spain into a country instead of many small kingdoms.

I belong to a Latino cooking club - we all have ancestors from different
Hispanic countries. When it was my turn, I made tostadas (great for both
vegetarian and meat eaters) and a huge nopale salad -- to my delight and
surprise, it was all gone!

My recipe
2 bottles of Dona Maria Nopales (already cleaned and cooked)
rinse and take out peppers/onions
Finely diced onions (1 small one or to taste)
Finely diced tomatoes (about three)
Queso ranchero - 2-3 packages (the smaller ones) broken up in small pieces
cilantro - 1 bunch
1 or 2 jalapenos - diced - on the side(not everyone likes chiles - it's
for those that like it and they simply can add to taste)
Gently toss together - serve with tostadas

My husband makes his capirotada for Ash Wednesday every year, it's the best of the lenten meals, followed by Sopa de Lentejas con zanahoria y espinacas. Lentil Soup with Carrots and spinach. That's dried shrimp dumplings with nopales in a mole sauce and sopa de habas, that's a fava bean soup, thick like pea soup.

We don't have a traditional Mexican Easter meal, we have the usual North American ham or lamb with the usual gringo side dishes, scalloped potatoes, asparagus, wild rice salad etc. etc.

Oh, Alicia, you still have your Mom? Lucky you. Her meals sound so yummy.

As for our Easter dinner, when I lived in the same town (San Jose) as my sister, I did have lamb, etc, very American. Now we have all scattered, and sister lives in Vegas, and Mom is gone. So, we two just go to the clubhouse here in our development on Easter where they have a fabulous buffet with ham, prime rib, turkey (no lamb) plus all kinds of salads, sides, and breakfast items too, and desserts.

Have a Happy Easter,

Peal off the prickle with a sharp knife, cut the nopal in small
rectangles, boil in water with onion and salt until they fill tender, rinse
with cold water until the water comes out clean.

Mix it with chopped tomatos, coriander, onion, avocado and as much
jalapeño as you want (you may skip the chile if you dont like it hot),
add a few drops of olive oil.

Thats all!, you can add some panela cheese cubes.

Miggy,

Adrián Márquez Padilla had provided the image number where the marriage is
found before your last response. In hundreds and maybe even a thousand
records I have searched for based on record that shows up on search and
provides a film number I have always found the record in that same film.
There has never been a mistake in that regard. What has to be done at times
is search the whole volume page by page because the record can be out of
order. I've tried to point this out in multiple posts. I had given you the
link to the volume to provoke you into searching it again because it there
and Adrián found it for you.

Here is what Adrián Márquez Padilla said. Let me know if you need a
tranlation.

Abram and Alicia,

It has nothing to do with site changes or with Abram taking his time. It
has to do with experience and knowledge of how they started putting the
images online with Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and a few others in one
collection then adding most of the rest of Mexico in separate areas.

The original images are under Mexico, Catholic Church Records found at -
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.f…

Then they started to create a separate location based on state and type of
record Church for one and Civil for the other. These and the previous one
mentioned are both found under the Mexico found at -
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&region=MEXICO

They should have moved the Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, etc collections so
they could be found where the Jalisco, Michoacán, and Guanajuato images are
located.

I don't like the way it was before or the way it is now. It could have been
done without scroll bars, vertical or horizontal. However, neither format
had anything with you not being able to find the Jalisco images.

As far as the baptismal record you are looking for it is in film number
634015. It will definitely be in that film, without a doubt. You will have
to jump around to find it.

Abram,

We need to learn to use what's available. In my opinion just having it available on line is wonderful.

Before December of 2010 in order to look at films, you had to go to your local family history center and order your film. You paid a fee for each roll of film and then you waited 5-6 weeks for your film to come to your local family history center from Salt Lake. You would go to your local FHC and view the film on microfilm readers. When you found a record you wanted, you had to pay a fee for every copy. I remember paying up to 25 cents per photocopy. Depending on your local FHC they were open 2 to 3 days a week and if the hours didn't work for you, tough. The film could only be viewed at the one local FHC, you couldn't take it to a different one that had better research hours and there were times when you'd order some film and it sat for the 3-4 weeks alloted time and pouf, that time passed and maybe you'd had time to view it once or twice. If you wanted it to remain longer

I agree. The current way is much better.

Depending on your local FHC they were open 2 to 3 days a week and if the hours didn't work for you, tough. The film could only be viewed at the one local FHC, you couldn't take it to a different one that had better research hours and there were times when you'd order some film and it sat for the 3-4

Thank you Adrian and Armando. I followed your directions.. I lost my lead on page 90 with the date discussed, and I assumed there were lost pages out of order and when I first read your instruction I assumed I was lead to the general film.

You are great.

Hope I can return the Favor.

It seems that retoños may have missed this son or transferred the name in tomo 5 page 55 Jose Santiago born Dec 13, 1758 married to Juana Gertrudis Perez Gallo on January 30, 1782; As we just confirmed the name was Jose Juachin married to Juana Gertrudis Perez Gallo the same day .

Bill,

The following girl seems to be the Juana DIAS DE SANDI you are searching for. She would have been only three months old at her mother Juana LOMELIN's death, (perhaps too young to be included in any documents) and 15 years old at the time of her own marriage to Joseph Alexandro ACOSTA.

From Film #299530, Mex CCRec Ags Ags Sag (inc Hac. Cieneguilla) Bau 1719-1733, Image 10.

Juana, española, baptized 6 Apr 1720, Ags,
hija lexitima de Ju. DIAS DE SANDI y Doña Juana LOMELIN y MENDOZA.
Padrino: el capitan Don Andres TELLO De LOMAS.

Hi Gloria,

Thank you very much for answering my question. Juana de Lomelin y Hurtado
de Mendoza was ill when her daughter was born and probably died of
post-partum complications three months after giving birth to her daughter.
The baptismal record also indicates that Juana was "hija lexitima de Juan
Díaz de Sandi y de Da Juana de Lomelin y Mendoza difunta". The word difunta
was later scratched out by the priest. Here is the sequence of events:

06 Apr 1720 - Juana Díaz de Sandi is baptized in Aguascalientes.

28 Jun 1720 - Her mother Juana de Lomelin y Hurtado de Mendoza, gravely
ill in bed after giving birth to her daughter, authorized her husband Juan
Díaz de Sandi to file her final will and testament on her behalf. No
mention of her newborn is made in her deposition, made in presence of the
scribe and witnesses.

05 Jul 1720 - Juana de Lomelín y Hurtado de Mendoza dies and is buried in
Aguascalientes.

18 Oct 1720 - Juan Díaz de Sandi files his wife's
