Success! Error in record Castaneda not Castanon

Hey everyone,

Just want to share a find. I'm looking for Castaneda in Jerez, Zac. I came across a Tomas Castanon with parents Gregorio Castanon and Isabel Galvan in Ermita de los Correas, which are the names of my great-grandmother's parents. On a hunch, I looked up the baptismal record and found all the right names, including grandparents. The priest made a mistake on the paternal last name! I feel like Sherlock Holmes. :-)

Still haven't found my great-grandmother Vita Castaneda Galvan, but I've found some of her brothers. Time for bed...

I should have mention  Gregorio and his siblings were born in Ciudad Zacatecas. I have  Gregorio bapt. May 1859 Sixto bapt. April 1861 and Pedro bapt. Feb 1863 all baptisms in Ciudad Zacatecas.

Congratulations! This success points out a very good rule of thumb. Either
the scribes, priest, and/or the people who are transcribing the records can
make mistakes. Always go to the source material to confirm.

Joseph,

You're exactly right. I also found a relative who was listed as Antonio instead of Antonia, and was listed as a boy as well. Not all records show up at familysearch.org either; I went searching for my grandmother just based on birth place and date, and found her.
