Racial discrepancy in baptism records

Yes, I have found such varying descriptions of race in baptisms in my research. One family had several children, and I was amazed that each child was listed with a race different from his parents. In this family I found "espanol", "yndio", "mestizo", and "mulato". A rainbow family.

Yes, I have found the same discrepancies on my Alviso line. Mestiza, Mestizo and then Espanol with siblings of the same mother and father. Als,o mestiza or mestizo at birth and then Espanol for the marriage. I think the race description were quite subjective (or influenced my donations possibly), so they should not be entirely trusted. I think we have spoken on this subject previously.

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for the parents or any info on Diego Diaz Montanez de Sandi and Juana Josepha Albares Tostado, who were married Jan 13, 1737 in Nochistlan.
I found in the LDS files a Juana Maria Alvares Tostado born 1721 Jalostotitlan, parents: Lucas Alvarez Tostado and Apolonia Fernandez Cordero. But I am not certain if it is the Juana I am looking for.

Family Santoyo-Diaz (de Leon?) Ojuelos-Cienega de Mata

My great-grandfather's grandfather Jose Lorenso Santoyo (born abt. 1775) was son of Joseph (Manuel?) Santoyo and Maria Josefa Diaz (de Leon?). I have not been able to find Jose Lorenso's birth certificate, but in his marriage (11 may 1808, San Jose de Ojuelos, Jal) to Maria Josefa Masias the parents of both are listed. In a search of Jose Lorenso's siblings I found the following individuals whom I believe, by the names of the parents, the timeline (1770-1802) and the places (all localities linked to Cienega de Mata & Ojuelos), to be siblings.

Jaime,

I have a suggestion- in case no one has the film. Mail in a completed form which available on the familysearch.org website. For $2.00 per record I have received paper copies of microfilm entries within two weeks of mailing. Go to the website, look to the right in "Start Your Family History". Next find the link "Forms" and click on it. On the next screen scroll down to "Request for Photocopies", Item #31831. You have your choice: type info online, or print a hard copy, complete and mail it. I think it's a great solution to waiting for several films to be mailed.

Thanks for your suggestion to request the photocopies of microfilm records. I had that in mind, but since it takes about a month to get them back, and I was hoping to move faster if somoeone had films: C602501/0639958 or C607042/640153 on permanent loan. Recently I found a Maria Josepha de la Santisima Trinidad Dias de Leon christened 11 Feb 1755 in Cienega de Mata, daughter of Andres Dias de Leon and Fca Antonia Baez, that could be the same Maria Josefa Dias married to Jose Santoyo that I mentioned. If the grandparents are listed in the baptisms of either Juan Jose or Jose Alberto Santoyo, it would save me some precious time.

No, what I saw was film numbers for the church in Moyahua dating from 1814 to the 1600's.  If we could get a hold of those films we would be able to extend our lines.   I believe that is why we are not able to find records on Silverio Reynoso.  He and many other family members would be on those films.

I can relate to this very well. My family also owned several haciendas, ranchos and ejidos in Aguas and Zacatecas and Jalisco, several of them were hacendados and the goverment and the notably the Zaptistas arrived on May 1913 in my mother's family hacienda and burned everything, they put them under house arrest for over a month according to my grandfathers grandmother who lived through this event she died in 1979 at the age of 100. It was said the Zapatas were burning all the wealthy spanish landowners lands until they reach the capital of Zacatecas. My 3rd gf who was the hacendado and his son i descend from him three times (intermarried alot) he and his son Celso died protecting the hacienda once they were able to rebel against Zapata. That is the reason why my family emmigrated to the USA. They went from "an upper class spanish family" and for the first experianced what is it like to work. According to my grandfather they learned alot from that experiance, be happy gratefu

Hello Edgar,

I am researching the area of Colotlan and Totatiche in Jalisco. I have De La O family and I descend from Manuel Santos Carrion married to Manuela De La O on 25 FEB 1699 in Totatiche, Jalisco. Manuela De La O was the daughter of Miguel De La O and Maria Perez. Miguel De La O is the son of Pedro Covarrubias and Gertrudis De La O. Gertrudis De La O was the Owner of Hacienda San Antonio de la O in Cartagenas, Totatiche, Jalisco in about 1650 according to Arturo Ramos (he has more information than I do on this family).

I couldn't find any of the De La O family you mentioned connecting to mine, but I did find other connections.

Here is the ancestors of Cipriano De La O Gaeta:

Hola Claudia ,how are you ? Well I hope . I descend from the Reynoso line of Jalisco. There were 2 brothers Francisco and Diego Reynoso whose parents were Francisco Reynoso (born In Peru ) and Mariana Padilla Davilla (Culiacan and related to all Padillas in the Area) . The 2 brothers married 2 sisters Josefa and Margarita Renteria. Francisco married Josefa (1659)in Guadalajara and Diego married Margarita in(1680) Juchipila ,Zacatecas. So in a nut shell Francisco stayed in Jalisco and Diego in Zacatecas. What are your thoughts ?

Thanks for the information on the two brothers, Francisco and Diego. I sure would like to know how you made the connections. I've only gone as far as the mid-eighteenth century; somehow the trail ends with Silverio Reynoso in Moyahua b.@1764.

I found a Miguel Reynoso Renteria, who came to Jalisco from Spain in 1720, and wodered if he might be Silverio's father...
I am interested in learning more about where I can find the links between Silberio and Diego Reynoso (the Diego from 1680 you mention).

Also - a recurring theme abounds and maybe you can enlighten me on it: What is the deal with the Reynoso-Renteria switch? I have heard about a Reynoso changing his name, also I know many Reynosos married Renterias, but the more I seek, the more of those I find. I tried to find more information about this couple, hoping to find who their
parents and grandparents were, in FamilySearch.org.but the only thing I
found was the date of christening for Jose de La Cruz, 14 Mar, 1689.
Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores, Teocaltiche, Jalisco. His parents were:
Francisco Tomas and Maria de La Cruz.

I hope somebody else will have better luck researching this couple. If we
can find either Maria's or Francisca's birth certificate we will have found
Petronila's de Moctezuma's parents.

Thanks for checking John. However, I don't think this is the same Maria de
Gabay because the daughter that I descend from, Petrona de Siordia, was
married on 14 Feb 1616. That would make Petrona's year of birth around
1592. If Maria was about 25 years old at the time of Petrona's birth, then
she would've been born around 1567. In 1634 she woul've been in her 60's,
so that makes her a bit old to be the mother named in the confirmation
records. She may very likely be a granddaughter of the Maria de Gabay
married to Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus. Pedro and Maria's children were
baptized in Aguascalientes.

Hi Sofia:

Francisca was born in 1577, so her mother, Petronila, would have been 27
years old if she was born in 1550, which sounds like a reasonable age.

Hi Maria:

What you say makes a lot of sense. The problem is that the confirmation
record for 1634 has no data at all for the parents. It would have been nice
if they had included at least their age. I guess we can't have everything
handed to us, genealogy wouldn't be any fun.

John, Maria, Jaime, Daniel and other genealogists interested in Petronila de Moctezuma:

A couple of years ago I came across this María Gabai as part of my research on the founding families of Aguascalientes. I was intrigued by the name, thinking that she was directly related to María Gabai de Moctezuma. She is not. She is a descendant of Christobal Navarro, Maria's brother. Here is what I found.

Maria Gabai was an illegitimate child of Christobal Navarro, one of three known children of Martin Navarro and Petronila de Moctezuma (Francisca, Maria and Christobal). Not much is known about Christobal Navarro, but his name pops-up every now-and-then in church records. I probably would have missed Maria Gabai altogether had it not been for the marriage of one of her descendants to Elvira de Ulloa in 1689. Joseph de Torres married Elvira de Ulloa on 12 Apr 1689 at the church of Ntra. Sra. de los Dolores (source: LDS Film 0639756 Marriages 1753-1790 Teocaltiche, Jal. Mexico). A

Hola Marisela,

The Information you have written concerning someone buying a name is amazing. Merits some further research.

One of my ancestors is Severa Ybarra Rueda, who married Juan Jose Sosa Medina in 1830 or 1835. Although her husband was born in Durango, Mexico, I have not been able to find where she was born. During the great "cotton bonanza" of the Comarca Lagunera from approximately 1830 to 1940 several hundred families traveled from Zacatecas, Jalisco, S.L.Potosi, and Puebla as migrant workers. The Comarca Lagunera is Coahuila and Durango. My mother (80 years young) has told me that many of her uncles came from Zacatecas during this time and stayed in the Comarca Lagunera. I have traced her family to Zacatecas to the mid-1700's.

Try the last name Ybarra in Family Search. I'll keep an eye out for your Ibarra or Ybarra info as I do further research.

Maria Gabay++

I found the following additional information on Maria Gabay:

"Gaspar Melchor y Maria Gabay se casaron el 24 de Julio de 1657" This looks like a second marriage for Maria Gabay.
