I have many Miramontes in my genealogy and have seen the surname Miramontes evolve to Viramontes beginning about the late 1800's.
Does anyone know why this happened?

I also have many Viramontes in my family tree and the short answer is "I don't know."! The earliest ancestor from around 1690 is Jose Christobal Miramontes. http://www.arturogonzalez.com/LaVillitaFamilies/languages/en/persons/Pe…
The Tierras y Aguas records use the "M" (and to several others with the same last name) and the Guadalajara also use the M the farther one looks. By the way, my V(M)iramontes seem to have ties to Tlaltenango. One of the Tierras y Aguas records mentions a path heading over the mountains from La Villita in Jalpa to Tlaltenango. Plus I think one of the sons of Jose Christobal was born in Tlaltenango in 1714.
