I had to ask my husband what "xenophobia" means. However, the US wasn't xenophobic when they took over lands long inhabited by Native Americans, who were not Christian and lived like savages. I think they stopped at the present Mexican and Canadian borders because by then, the Mexicans were very Christianized and Europeanized (the language, government, military, etc) as were the Canadians. They were no longer such pushovers, and there may have been the fear that if the US continued to "acquire" more land, the Russians, English, French and Spanish would step in. The US probably realized then that they did not want to overextend themselves and lose land the way the English and Spanish and French had. Even for them there was a limit. Now they seem to want to close the borders to protect what they have acquired thus far. My husband said that he heard someone on a talk show say that the way to stop "illegal" immigration is to give the former Mexican lands back, ha, ha. They did, in the 1980's I guess, give back a tiny portion near El Paso called El Chamisal where some of my mother's ancestors once lived. Emilie Garcia Port Orchard, WA --
