Yes, Leticia, I also try all the known surnames that a person has been known to use. Step-mother or step-father's name, the mother's or the grand-mother's maiden name, etc. For example, my husband's great-great grandmother was "hija natural de Ramona Ornelas". Her son, Simon Garcia said her surname was Gonzalez, which I think was her father or step-father, but mostly she used Ornelas or De Leon in the baptism records for her children or for her marriage record. I don't know yet where she got the De Leon. Other times I just use different spellings or leave off the "s" at the end of a name, or change an "e" to an "I", etc. When I use the IGI, I just type in one very simple surname, like Serros or Cerros and do not check off the "exact spelling", and it gives me all the different versions of that name: Del Cerro, Serro, Serros, Cerros, Cerro, so my fingers just fly over the keyboard and I find myself using the "refine search" to get to the particular state, then I look at everything for that state. Sometimes I add Jose or Maria to the first name, sometimes I leave that out. I can't keep up with myself when I am searching the resources available on the Internet, one path leads me to another very quickly when I am "on a roll" so to speak, so when someone asks me how I did it, I don't remember. I am always looking at surname message boards, state records, Social Security records, the trees on World Connect, and I subscribe to most of the data bases available on Ancestry.com. I do this because I cannot travel to Mexico, or speak Spanish well enough to communicate to someone there; if I could, I would be calling people in Mexico all the time and maybe then I would get somewhere sooner in my research, since then I could get information directly from "cronistas', librarians, genealogists, etc. Emilie Garcia Port Orchard, WA ----

Hi Emilie: Thank you for the information about "del Cerro". I always thought my mother's last name was "Cerros" But it didn't take long to find out that my grandfather's last name was "Cerro". I remember seen a definition of cerro as backbone, or espinazo. Cerros means a small mountain. It goes: Loma, cerro, montaña y sierra, degrees according to size. Sierra means "saw" as the tool the carpenters use. The name "sierra" was given to the mountain chain because they resemble the teeth of a saw. There is only one Sierra Nevada, it was named for its snow covered peaks. I just cringe when I hear statements in the media such as: "Great week-end to visit the sierras" TV people (professionals?) Should know that there is only one "Sierra" .
