John, The men in question were not Navy. They were in an ejercito---Army. My husband said he saw what they called "tracks" on the shoulder of the man seated--that is a Captain's rank insignia. The other man had nothing on his shoulder, but he had an insignia on his collar and an eagle on his chest. He believes he was a major. At the time, 1920's, didn't the Mexican forces kind of follow the American uniforms? About the sword, my husband didn't know; he said that went out long time ago in the US, unless the cavalry used them. Emilie Garcia Port Orchard, WA ---

I stand corrected as far as I made a mistake in the message. After the word example: Navy, the word Navy doesnt belong there, the word should have been Army. What I am saying is that the isignia is not "Universal" as your husband states. He is right when he says that a Captain's insignia in the Navy is an eagle, but in the Air Force it is the insignia for a Colonel! A Captain's insigina in the Air Force is two bars! PS: I spent 5 years in the U.S. Air Force and for ten years, every two months, I would travel aboard a Mexican Navy Coast Guard Cutter.

As a former Marine I don't believe you are correct:
Two bars in the U.S. Navy was a Lieutenent. A Captain
insignia in the Navy an Eagle. The Navy LT. did wear
two bars {bands} but on his sleeve. The Captain had
four on his.

I don't believe your husband is right when he says that rank insignia is universal. One example: Navy A Captain's insigia is 2 bars, but in Mexico is three bars. U.S. Navy isignia are also different from the U.S. Air Force.
