Thanks for your insight about this matter.  

Do you have an idea what kind of changes are going to be made in the 
extraction program in SLC?  Are things not moving along fast enough 
or something?

There are a lot of films, that are still waiting to be extracted. 
Also, there alot of batch numbers, that are not on the Parish and
Vital Records list.

I am aware, that there are people, who have gotten permission, from
Salt Lake, to extract all the records, from a certain area.  I would
assume, that one needs to contact the Extraction Deptment, in Salt
Lake.  And from, what I've heard lately, there is going to be some
changes, in the extraction program, later on this year.

Hi Peggy,

It appears to be so.  Such is the case of those films from Valparaiso 
that started this discussion.  What you can do is go to the Family 
History Library Catalog and do a Place Search

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Then select the place out of the list;  in the place details select 
the topic of your interest, for example, Church records.  Then in 
topic details select one of the titles.  Finaly, in the title details 
click the upper right button "View Film Details".  

There you will see all the films that are available for the locality 
of your choice, whether they are in the IGI or not.  Hope this helps!

Joseph, I'm afraid that the percentage of films yet to be captured to 
the IGI is quite significant, because using the batch number list in 
Ranchos2 and going thru the list number by number for several 
localities of my interest many of them didn't return any records.  
And I mean any records, not just the ones I'm looking for.

This is an unexpected finding for me.  Any comments?

Thanks for your message and for your magnificent work.  I suppose 
there are many more volunteers like you.  The work you have done
ís 
outstanding, to say the least!

So, if I understand correctly, even for those batch numbers that are 
already published on the IGI database, is it possible that you might 
have skipped one or more of those illegible entries?  How frequently 
are you faced with a situation like this?

Well, that means that even if we haven't found a particular record on 
the IGI there's still hope that we could find it in the microfilm 
itself.  And that goes also for the records in those microfilms that 
haven't been captured yet, of course.

Anyway, back to the original question.  Do you have an idea, just an 
approximation about the percentage of films that have already been 
transcribed to the IGI?

because I can't do it full time and there are names that I come 
across that I have never seen before and have no clue as to what they 
are. Especially the Indian names and the ancient fathers spelled 
names as they sounded.  Two different fathers will spell a name 
different for the same person - baptism and later marriage.  Maybe we 
haven't gotten to the records in question yet. It is a slow process.
