to a particular group of people that had my same surname, Gomez in Los
Altos. My dad and his brother even went to blows over this. My
uncle claimed they weren't, and my dad said they were. They are related,
but my dad and uncle never wanted to claim them because they had a reputation
for marrying cousins that were a little too closely related, even in their day
(1950's) when there were more people to choose spouses from. I found
the connection, and one of my cousins (on my mother's side of the family)--you
guessed it! Yep, she married one. My mother has their wedding
picture. Hopefully I'll meet him face to face some day when I go on
my next visit to Mexico. I don't see a ressemblance, other than the usual
alteno features, but then he might be a "more pure" version of my Gomez
line. :)

Approximately, 14 years ago
when I started my
genealogy research, I got a long list of all those
with
the last name of Duarte from our local LDS
library, that dated back to 1496,
from the state of
Zacatecas. I assumed that I was not related to
those
Duartes that were not from Jerez (that's where my
grandfather was
born). After about 10 years of
researching, I proved myself wrong, dead
wrong---I
found out that I was related to over half of the early
Duartes
from Zacatecas, and many of them were from
various different towns and
ranches, other than Jerez!
This was not the first time that I assumed
the I was
not related to an individual with the same last name
(Prieto),
but later again, I proved myself wrong.
