Jon,
Kitty Cortez was asking about finding Batch numbers and I thought of
your above response. Can you give us a few more words on this? also
would you care to comment on the LDS meaning in this response. I
didn't exactly understand how this reply would help in getting batch
numbers:
"You can see the ordinance dates on the Internet International
Genealogical Index IF you register AS A MEMBER of The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints."
Would you happen to know if there is a relation between batch numbers
and ordinance dates?

To help me, answer the questions, I
am going to use exerts from several messages, that were recently posted
on the "LDS-Ward-Consultant" list on Rootsweb.
First, let me
explain the "Batch Number": The "Batch Number" is
used to identify the different sources of information, in the LDS
International Genealogical Index or IGI. The first letter or first few
numbers in the batch number indicate whether the source is an extracted
record, a submitted form, or a membership record. For example, the C
in C503781 indicates an extracted christening or birth
record. For further explanation of the letters and different types of

Do you know why they sometimes use the J and K letters rather than just
the C and have both sexes together?
Also I know this is a stretch but at the beginning of most films is the
name of the person who actually filmed the records. . .is there any way
of contacting that person? And if so how would I go about finding them?
Who usually filmed the records? Local LDS members or missionaries sent
in from other parts of Mexico or the US? Do they ever do request for
refilming?

to its records extraction program for time periods for which all
individuals are deceased. It also indicates records that are currently
being extracted. Millions of these records are indexed by name in the

The "Parish and Vital Records List"
is only on microfiche, at the Family History Centers, it is usually
located near the IGI microfiche. The fiche is listed alphabetically by
country. Then by state or county, then by town or parish. As you can
see from below, there are 7 columns. Column 1, is the state, Column
2, is the Town and or Parish. Column 3, is the time period. Column 4
is the record type. Column 5, is the printout Call number. Column 6,
is the batch number. And column 7, is the source call
number. Such as the film number.

As to the relationship, to the Batch
numbers and the temple ordinance dates. I am going to include a page
from a older manual, that refers to the Parish and Vital Records list.
"How the Parish and Vital Records
List Relates to the International Genealogical Index
Changes have been made to the way
names are added in the International Genealogical Index. as a result,
the Parish and Vital Records List does not coordinate with the current
edition to the International Genealogical Index as it did in the past.
the relationship between the two sources will continue to evole over
the next few years.
How Names Used to be Processed.
In previous editions, all names extracted were automatically prepared
to be sent to the temple and therefore, included in the International
Genealogical Index. names that had not yet had their temple ordinances
performed were marked 'cleared.' As, needed, cleared names were
actually sent to temples. It sometimes was years before an extracted
name was sent to a temple even though it was marked 'cleared.'
In the Parish and Vital Records List,
batches received after the International Genealogical Index was
produced were marked with **, indicating the names would appear in hte
next edition of the Index.
How names Are Now Processed.
Names are added to the International Genealogical Index have actually
gone, to the temple and returned to Church Headquarter for final
recording. Therefore, you cannot assume that names from every batch
listed in the Parish and Vital Records List automatically appear in the
International Genealogical Index. Neither will all names automatically
be sent to the temple."
