What does the term "abogada" mean?

For the past few months, I've been trying to break what it looks like an unbreakable wall. Actually, it's two of them.

Hi Steve,
Abogada means lawyer, and in the same sense advocate, intercessor or mediatior. It is one of the titles given to the Virgin Mary in the Salve Regina prayer, Abogada Nuestra, Our Intercessor, Most gracious advocate. Many names or titles given to the Virgin Mary are common given names, sometimes for both females and males: Dolores, Regina, Consuelo, Socorro, Remedios, Pilar, Carmen, etc.
So I guess Abogada is a given name for the child, based on the Our Advocate title for Virgin Mary. It may also be the name of a saint.

The benefits of sharing with others...

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2009

Dear Eduardo-

I certainly agree with you about the sharing. I think that sometimes, people don't want to share because they are in the process of writing a book which eventually they will sell. I look forward to opportunities to share by giving talks, instructing others, volunteering at the local LDS Family History Center, etc. I always end up getting so much back in return and learning new ways to research.

I agree with Patricia and Eduardo.

I have put in many hours in my family tree. I have spent a lot of money on films. Because of this, I see why some people may not want to share. However, I have been rewarded and blessed by working on other peoples lines and by sharing my information. I may have not received the same amount of information that I have given out but I have filled gaps in my tree that most probably would have taken a lot more money (on films and travel) and time to find. And this is not even the best reason to share. I have found that one of the things I like best about genealogy is the sharing of information and the friends that I have made through this hobby.
Many years ago I had decided to to give up genealogy as a hobby. I had mainly worked alone and not shared my work with other genealogists. I had already worked out most of my family tree into the 1600's, with only a couple of branches only making it to the early 1800's. Right now I still have one branch that

Estimado Enrique

Hi,

Have you looked for Antonio Membrila and Josefa Moreno children's baptismal certificates. For the year you mention of that marriage I imagine that if there's a children from them born after 1810 aprox. with a lot of probability you'll find in the original record the name of the gradparents so you'll have one more generation.
And for sure they are the same Brambila's as mine. By being an italian surname, it could be wrong written one someone hear it because it wasn't common.

Good luck, and hope someone could help us on the primary roots of this family.

I've been working some on this line--and the new information posted lately was received with great pleasure. Possible I'm confused about your point; but I think you're asking whether Jose de la Brambila, husband of Catalina Lomelin, could also be the husband of Antonia Ibarra. Josef, the husband of Antonia, is the son of Josef Brambila and Catalina Lomelin: Cocula; Book of Baptisms 1560- 1826, Vol. 1, Page 88; 4 August, 1664.
Sometimes the names become so similar it is hard to keep them straight. I'm just so pleased to be a member of this group--I've received so much help.

Hi Deedra,

I'm so happy with your answer, the Brambila line is one of the most important for me because I'm Brambila many times. So I will consider now Catalina de Lomelin as my ancestor, have you traced back her line, I am correct with the line previously posted?

For the side of Brambila's I imagine that Agustín de la Brambila y Arriaga, is the son of Francisco Brambila y Arriaga and Juana de Ordaz y Mérida, grandson of the pacificador Juan Antonio Brambila and Francisca de Arriaga. There is a very interesting document related to Francisco Arriaga Brambila y Bocanegra, wich traces all the Brambila line back to Juan Antonio Brambila's father Bartolome Brambila, who apparently was an "hidalgo" and a descendant of the "Señores del Valle de la Brambila" in Italy, this privilege was granted by the Dukes of Milan.

Please let me know if you have the exact link to Juan Antonio Brambila.

Regarding Joseph Brambila: I concede that it is unlikely that he would live to 113. However, I also find it unlikely that the father, even widowed, would agree that his son marry at age 15 when he himself did not marry until age 35. In reviewing the baptisms of the children of Joseph (hijo) with Antonia Ibarra, I find it odd that none of the Padrinos were family members of Joseph; a practice that is common even today. I am beginning to believe that Joseph (hijo) may actually be a younger brother, nephew, or cousin of Joseph (Gusepe) Brambila y Arriaga. I've tried to search the Michoacán records, page by page, with no luck as yet, but will continue.

At the time I assumed family members had exaggerated; but your suggestion that the Josef Brambila married to Catalina Lomelin y Peralta and Antonia Isabel Guijarro Ibarra are actually the same person caused me to investigate further--I believe this is the case!!!
We must assume that Joseph Brambila was one of the youngest children of Augustin Brambila and Gracia Alvarado and would have been born in the late 1630's. His youngest known child with Catalina Lomelin was Joseph, born in 1664.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18433-11375-90?cc=1874591&wc…

This is the Josef Brambila whom we had assumed to be the father of Augustin Brambila, but in reality is most likely his 1/2 brother. Also at the time of Manuel's marriage to Rita Monrroy Quevedo in 1699

I believe I have found the reason. I found a Baptism entry for their daughter, Juana Josefa, in Autlan in which it lists Fernando as "Defuncto." It lists her as Angela Rios, but her mother was Petronila Rios as is the Madrina. Unfortunately there are no burial records for that time in Autlan

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18414-32636-9?cc=1874591&wc=…

The witnesses provide a family tree and at the top of it, Francisco de Velasco's name is written (Francisco de Velasco y Temiño, married to Gerónima de la Cueva). Francisco 's sons in this case are Diego Muñóz de Velasco married to Juana Casillas de Híjar and Tomasina de Velasco y Zúñiga (aka as Velasco y Quevedo, not sure why she appears in one document with the Quevedo?). Well finally the dispensa is about the marriage of Diego's grandson, Francisco de Velasco, and Tomasina's greatgrandaughter, Catarina Girón. With this document you can confirm Tomasina's parents and by checking the dates of the baptisms of her only child with Matías Girón

Hi Deedra,

Good to hear from you.

After Enrique provided the piece above about how to connect Tomasina de Velasco with the Giron family, I realized it cleared up another puzzle in my tree.

There is another dispensa, this one for Manuel Gonzalez de Leon and Maria Gomez de Contreras in 1716 in Tecolotlan. Frustratingly it diagrammed the relationship very neatly but did not use names for how Manuel and Maria were related. HOWEVER, with the piece Enrique put it in, it is now clear to me that the dispensa was investigating the same link: Tomasina de Velasco as the link between the Velasco family and the Giron Family. The dispensa starts a few images before, but I am sendign the link for the family tree.

You can find it here:

Thank you for your help. My husband is a direct descendant of Thomasina Velasco via Juan Beltran Cuevas and Maria Velasco and Juan Gomez-Garcia via their son Joseph to Rogue; and through Pedro through daughter, Feliciana. Thank you for the link to the 1716 Dispensa. However, when I am reading it I believe it to show that Francisco Velasco and Maria Velasco y Zuniga are the siblings. The top relationship says "Vis Abuelo of Pretenso------Abuela of Pretensa"

I interpret the tree as follows:
Francisco Velasco-Termino----Brother/Sister----Maria Velasco-Zuniga
Thomasina Velasco Quevedo----------------------Pedro Gomez-Garcia
Josefa Xiron-----------------------------------Maria Gomez-Garcia
Manuel Gonzales de Leon

But in viewing the ages of the cousins it would appear that Maria's children are of a similar age to Thomasina's and Diego's and I believe that your assumption that Maria and Thomasina are actually sisters may be correct.

Hi Deedra,

Yes, you are correct that the dispensa says that the first two people are brother and sister. And so there would have to be two Francisco de Velasco (one would be Francisco de Velasco y Temino, father father second who would then be a Francisco de Velasco y Zuniga), and the younger Francisco de Velasco would be the father of another Tomasina de Velasco.

The main problem is that I don't know of any addition proof that there were two Franciscos de Velasco in Tecolotlan, or two Tomasinas de Velasco. In addition, the younger Francisco would have had to get married early, and have his daughter get married very early.

Chronologically having only one Tomasina makes more sense. But then we know in genealogy doesn't always make sense

FANTASTIC I think that this is a great idea of yours. Thank you so much for doing this. So many people keep asking for the information that you are providing. There is great interest out there. The information on the family records reinforce my contention that Carlo was born earlier than 1584.
Please don't forget Luis Lomeli. It took me well over thirty years to find out that I descend from Luis Lomellin. Many people from Los altos de Jalisco also descend from him, but just don't know it. I know of at least two other people from this nuestros ranches community that have stated that they descend from him. I will post how I descend from Luis Lomellini soon. This will help others realize that they too descend from him.
Thanks again Steve for your tremendous work. An even bigger thanks for sharing your work.

Muchas gracias Jose!
Your information links Juan sotelo to the Siordia name, which i understand was not a common name at that time. Judging from Ramons recent reply, the documents i need will come back online (hopefully soon). Perhaps then i will be able to piece together the relationships. One question for you: have you seen any information about where juan sotelo was boen?

Thanks Ramon! I'll check it out. Yes the record of death does mentiona a testamento, which he signed before the alcalde mayor and his escribano, here is a link to the image in case you or anyone else is curious:

Hi Ramon

I have been to the website and it does have some good stuff! However, the links do not work. Maybe it is just my computer. Could you go to this link, click on Ver Documento for Nicolas de Esparza (testamento) and see if it will take you to the image of the document? None of the links worked for me (I tried several).

ps I thought I had saved links (bookmarked) several interesting entries, but it turns out all the bookmarks I made only take me to the first page, and there are 350pages, of which I had skimmed through the first 100 or so....Domingo Ruiz de Esparza turned up a lot, but I also saw links to the testaments for both Juana Siordia and Maria Siordia, and cases involving Antonio Femat...have not yet found the testament for Juan Sotelo.

Hi Denise,

I know it's been a while since your original post, but in case you don't have this resource:

Go to: http://sigue.aguascalientes.gob.mx/axweb/

To log-in:
User Name: sigue.publica
Password: publica

Once the page opens, right-click on SGG-ARCHIVO-HISTORICO-ACERVOS COLONIALES SIGLOS XVII XIX (if you're on a Mac, double-finger click)

Then select "New Query."

Once the page opens, in the dropbox that says LUGAR, select Aguascalientes.

Then, in the dropbox that says "TIPO DOCUMENTAL," select TESTAMENTO.

Type in the name of your ancestor in the field that says 'CONTRATANTES" and click submit. If your ancestor's name doesn't appear, try different spellings, or don't enter a name at all, and click "submit," the entire list will open and you can scan through it.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

There is a 1654 will and testament for a Juan Sotelo in that archive.

Hello Denise et al

Some time ago I had already searched for information in this site and at that time somehow I was able to browse through the files succesfully (serendipity), yesterday I visited the site again and I wouldn´t have had succes had I not seen the tip Armando gave us.

I looked for Juan Sotelos will and it seems to me that it is not available, it doesn´t appear, well, I forgot trying "JUAN ARIAS" maybe that could bring some results.

I did see a document dated on 1654 concerning one Sotelo but it is not Juan, it is a lease contract between Don Francisco de Sotelo and a Mr. Quixas : Mr Quixas is reported as the owner of two houses with orchards and he rents them to Mr. Sotelo; they agree on the price and time frame, etc.. I saw many documents listed containing interesting lastnames as Ruíz de Esparza and Siordia, etc. but most of them are dated in the mid 1700´s.

Juan´s last will must be somewhere and somebody will find it sonner or later, however, another very important

son of Diego Arias Sotelo and Maria Manuel de Portugal?

Has anyone else come across a child of Diego Arias Sotelo and Maria Manuel de Portugal? Is that what this Diego named below is? The information below came from PARES

I have seen the image of the original document, and even though I did not understand much of it, I did see the name Diego Arias de Sotelo, and the name Maria Manuel (not Manuela) in the document.

Also, I found a book scanned in about the noble families of Spain, from 1622, with details of the Torres y Portugal Family. It names Maria a sister of Ferdinand de Portugal, tesorero, who went to Mexico, and it also names Maria Manuel de Portugal as his daughter.

So I am still confused...

Here is the link to the book
By Alonso López de Haro

http://books.google.dk/books?id=AKr0u4RvQr0C&pg=PA215&dq=tesorero+ferna…

p. 215 (of the book, not the number of the Google images) has the info on Maria Manuel de Portugal and Ferdinand.

Hello Denise

I don´t see the confusion, I mean:

Now we know that Diego Arias Sotelo married around 1550 to Leonor de Moctezuma y Valderrama and then before 1559 to María Manuel.

This lady was a descendant of Pedro I de Portugal (and very probably of the "Infante Juan Manuel" also)

Her complete last name chronologically arranged should have been: Villarroel (his father´s) and Portugal Torres Fajardo Manuel (her mother´s line)

She was first cousin to Fernando de Torres y Portugal First Count of Villar Donpardo and Virrey del Perú en 1584

She had a brother whose name was also Fernando de Portugal who was chrged "Tesorero de la Armada de la Cd. de México"

Her cousin Fernando took María´s son, Diego to Perú and this nephew was one of the causes that forced the Virrey to quit his high post and return to Spain.

So Don Diego Arias Sotelo married twice into high nobility : first into the Royal Aztec blood and then into the Francs blood because María Manuel was the fifth

Thanks Carlos, it makes more sense to me now after i read your summary!

The picture i get from the documents i PARES is that at least two of diego arias children lived in mexico city, cristobal and diego. So i'm thinking that maybe that was true of Petronila. Their residence at tarimbaro during the processo against the arias de sotelo brothers was perhaps then only a temporary event. So i will shift my focus to the mex city documents and PARES!

Also, i think very few can now doubt that Petronila was the daughter of Diego Arias de Sotelo and Leonor Valderrama Moctezuma, so the search for a primary source is no waste of time...the information is out there somewhere...

Hi Denise

In my opinion the Sotelos stayed a good deal of time in Michoacan (when they were allowed to); for instance during the trial about the "Conspiracy of the Encomenderos" Diego Arias Sotelo is given seven days to show up in Mexico City from his encomienda de Tarímbaro and in case he couldn´t make it he was to be fined a very heavy amount of money.

Then during the trial Diego asks for permission of (I kind of remember) 6 weeks to stay in Tarímbaro and then asks for a renewal of the requested permision alleguing that His health continues to be weak. Moreover, when he is in Mexico City he is allowed to stay in his brother in law´s house (The Treasurer Fernando de Torres Portugal) instead of being in jail, so maybe he didn´t have a permanent house in México City.

Hi Carlos

I had also seen the reference to Tarimbaro you refer, and that it why i struggled to read the oldest records I could find from Morelia. There is surely more information there than I could decipher. The little I found I have presented in NR, where i recognized the same don Fernando sotelo and the name tarimbaro. We know from The Encomendero's of New Spain that Fernando took over as encomendero of Ecatepec in 1568 when his father Diego Arias Sotelo had to go into exile. About Tarimbaro i do not know, except that the reference to it which i found mentions something about it having been sold. You can take a look at the posts on it, with link to the image, here:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21270 LINK TO THE THREAD ABOUT TARIMBARO

The story of the Sotelo Family i find dramatic, think of the distances they covered, from spain to Mexico to peru and back and forth. I have a theory or really just speculation that Maria Manual, once Diego was exiled in 1568, would have moved

Hi Carlos and anyone descended from tesorero Fernando de Portugal, his sister Maria (second wife of Diego Arias Sotelo) or his other sister Catalina,

I transcribed the relevant passages from the Nobiliario genealogico, which gives the specifics about how they descend from the royal houses of Spain and Portugal.

What I found interesting is the mention of the Faxardo Family, from Murcia. The reason I find it interesting is because when Diego Arias Sotelo was exiled, he sent a letter from Mula, very close to Murcia (he was otherwise supposed to be rowing a galley off Oran on the coast of Algeria). So maybe the reason he did not end up on a galley was that he had family in high places (through his wife). I found this quote from the article Bastardía, Aristocracia y Ordenes Militares en la Castilla Moderna: El Linaje Fajardo (Juan Hernandez Franco and Raimundo A. Rodriguez Pérez, Hispania, Vol 69, No 232 (2009):331-362):

Thank you for posting this. It is very informative. Since the author is
including people from Navarra/Nafarroa then Martín Navarro de Gabay,
husband of Petronila Moctezuma, and Lope Ruíz de Esparza y Eguinoa could
have been included.

Comment

Armando,
I don't see the link to the book, if you could kindly send me the link I would be very appreciative. Speaking on the subject about Basque and Martín de Gabay, "el Navarro" as he was nicknamed. Their may be a jewish connection with the British Isles as to the lineage of the Gabay family, but this needs to be elaborated further and necessary documents need to be found.

Hola Ruben,

Dame mas datos y vemos si podemos avanzar.
