NuestrosRanchos Website - High-Traffic

All,

As one of several administrators of this NuestrosRanchos website, I recently began summarizing stats of how often this website is accessed.

Daily member logins are only a small portion of how often this site is visited and utilized.  NuestrosRanchos is considered a high-traffic website.

The large number of website visits ( shared below) are a tribute to those original members that founded this site back in 2003.

The founding members obviously recoqnized the value and need for sharing historical and genealogical information related to Jalisco and adjacent regions. As a result the NuestrosRanchos website is considered very popular. This is accomplised without ads or monthly user fees, which makes this even more impressive.  Even though our registered member base is considered modest (1,750 members), I personally appreciate the efforts of all of our members, and the discussions and input that has been shared over the last 23 years.

Alonso Cornejo

Hello everyone,

I was organizing and going over some documents I have. One of these I came across had some information on Alonso Cornejo, which is titled Familia Paterna y Materna de Sor Juana: hallazgos documentales, by Guillermo Scmidhuber of the University of Guadalajara. He delves into the Cornejo family, specifically Alonso Cornejo.

A Cristóbal Joseph Gomez Cornejo, on 10 June 1758 solicited documents of relation in reference to the Cornejo Ramirez family. It references a document from the 18th of November, 1676 that was prepared for the family of Joseph Cornejo Ramirez. The author notes a petition which deals with the genealogy of the Cornejo family. In said document, a witness testified  that Capt. Fernando Gordíbar Osorio was the paternal grandfather of said Joseph Cornejo, for which this information is provided, and he (Gordíbar Osorio) was a descendent of the first conquistadores.

Hello Edward,

Congratulations on such a great find.  I will like to take you out to lunch and discuss the line with you.  There is a document that I will like to show you that doesn’t dismiss your findings, but does add another generation as it relates to our Cornejo line. This document does address a concern that Leo had.

Do you live in or near Los Angeles?

What’s new, how have you been? I have not had much time to devote to the search recently and had been working on Antonio Cornejo Riojano last, where I was able to locate quite a lot of documents with him and his sons. Reading through those had slowed me down quite a bit, but they are fascinating.

Hello Edward,

I would like to dig deeper into the Cornejo lineage and I need to fill some gaps.   We know that Juana Bautista Cornejo was from Salamanca.    We also can assume that her family was also prestigious as that surname was what was passed down instead of the prestigious Osorio surname.  There were at least two prestigious Cornejo lines in Salamanca that connected to two Doctor Cornejos.   Right now I am not sure if the two doctors were related.    We also have another clue as to the Cornejo family as we know that it also included a Francisco Cornejo that came over.    Right now I don’t know the family ties to this Francisco Cornejo.    Right now we only have leads to research but nothing solid on the ancestry of Juana Bautista Cornejo.   I also need to take a look at the document that Leonardo has that shows how my family tree is connected to Alonso Cornejo.    Hopefully Leo will see this post and realize that I need his help to continue this research.

Saludos a todos,

I was able to locate the death registration for Alonso Cornejo from 1671, the year it is believed he passed away.

This leads me more and more to believe that there were two Alonso Cornejos, as we had discussed previously. The first, Alonso Cornejo(i) 1600-1671 who was married to Ines Ramirez. The second, Alonso Cornejo (ii) was his son and who is the one we see in so many of the birth registrations with Francisca. Also, Alonso and Francisca are in many registrations as witnesses well after 1671.

I will try and find some more evidence to support this theory.

Subject:  Mayor de Velasco

So according to what you posted, Mayor Velasco is the mother of Garcia Alvarez Osorio.  And we know from the lawsuit over the taxes on the inherited property from their father that Garcia Alonso Osorio and Martin Alvarez Osorio are full brothers sharing the same inheritance and same parents.  You also posted her parents as Pedro de Velasco, I Conde de Haro, and Maria Garcia de Sarmiento.   I already had Mayor’s parents as ancestors as her brother is my ancestor through my Padilla ancestry.

This Alvaro Perez de Osorio was a lord over the many regions, and  “La Rioja” was one of them. So may explain the Rioja/Riojano surname.

Great work Edward,

Yes, I think you’re right. With the info you provided of Isabel de Rojas, I began looking over the Los Osorio un Linaje de Mas de Mil Amos al Servicio de la Corona por Jaime de Salazar y Acha again and found the below on the two different Pedro Alvarez Osorio (there are several and hard to keep track of!)

Please look at the Pedro XV below and XVIII. In the book, XV is the Pedro married to Maria Fernandez de Villalobos, father to Alvar Perez Osorio, father of our Martin Alvarez Osorio, who is the father of Cristobal Diaz Narices.

Pedro XVIII is the one listed as marrying Isabel de Rojas.

Merging the two Pedro [  (18.)-  Pedro Alvarez de Osorio] has stayed on my mind.    I don’t feel comfortable merging the two.   I think more research needs to be done. From the nobilario and other records we do have lots of information, but I feel more research needs to be done before merging these two Pedro Alvarez Osorios.

We do know that Martin Alvarez Osorio and Garcia Alvarez Osorio are brothers and we know their fathers name, Alvaro Perez Osorio, grandfathers  name, Pedro Alvarez Osorio, and great grandfather’s name, Juan Alvarez Osorio; But the question that hovers over the whole situation is the names of the mother and grandmother.    I think we should look up more records to make sure we are making the right decisions as to their names

Saludos Edward y Leonardo,

I wondered why the Riojano/Rojano (variation of De Rojas/de Riojas) would continue popping up with the surname Cornejo and not Osorio.     But now there is an answer to that.  This de Riojas/Rojas ancestry has a connection to the royal family.  The line descends from King Fernando III de Castilla aka “El Santo Rey”. They were as much nobility as the Osorio, if not higher. I’m at work on my dinner break   Tomorrow I will post an ancestral line to King Fernando III El Santo .

And as to dropping parts of the last name.   One of my lines is Alvarez Tostado but in the 1800’s we dropped the Tostado.  My father in laws grandfather was Alvarez Tostado but he dropped the Alvarez from the name and my father in laws surname was Tostado.  My Martin del Campo dropped the del Campo in the 1800’s and my mother in laws Martin del Campo ancestorschanged their surname to just Campos.

Wow thank you so much! There is so much I don’t know, especially with the Osorio lineage. I know you had mentioned you had studied them for some time and you’re right about the research being difficult due to the names being so similar!

Very interesting about the Rojas info! My original working theory was that Antonio Cornejo Riojano had a different mother with the surname Riojano or that mother may have been from La Rioja region. Still curious, probably won’t ever know, that my line ended up changing the last name from Cornejo to Rojano in the mid 1800s. I guess they knew about the last name being in that line from Antonio..I thought maybe because 6. José Remigio Cornejo Tostado (also known as Remigio Rojano): born 30 September 1824 in Coca, Jalostotitlan, Jalisco; died 17 November 1892 in Ejutla, Jalisco, ended up marrying another Cornejo (María de Jesús García Cornejo).

Saludos Leonardo y Edward,

After reading the nobilario, I had more questions in my mind that led me back to Leonardo’s and Edward’s questions regarding the Osorio ancestry, so I went back to my notes and did more research.   I had originally told Edward that I believed that the Rojano/Riojano surname came from a “de Rojas” ancestry in our Osorio line.  But when I went back to look at out ancestral line with Maria Fernandez de Villalobos as Pedro Alvarez de Osorio’s wife I couldn’t find the Rojas line.   Then Leonardo questioned the ancestry.  Those thoughts were lingering as a cloud as I read the nobilario.  So yes the line starts with Juan Alvarez Osorio and his wife Aldonza de Guzman, but the nobilario doesn’t mention the wives names of Pedro Alvarez Osorio and Alvar Perez Osorio.   So I did more research which is hard on this family because there were so many Rodrigo, Alvaro, and Pedro Osorios in the family.  And it turns out that I needed to merge some of the Pedro Alvarez Osorios

I went searching for other connections between the Cornejo and Acosta and that popped up.  It is in the same time period and I thought that it was more than just a coincidence. Do Nicolas and Alfonso have a brother named Juan Cornejo?

I saw that someone had already added the Osorio lineage to the Cornejo line on familysearch.  I haven’t checked it all out yet but I did find one common mistake.  Many genealogists have mistaken two cousins with the same name and the same title.    I am sending you an explanation of the mistake and the right lineage.

Hi Rick,

Yes I have followed the family and discussions for years. I think it was Jaime Holcombe's letters where it was mentioned someone found the Limpieza that connected the dots, revealing Antonio's parents. I personally like to see primary source documents when feasible before I add anything to my tree and I have yet to, so it will have to wait.

Hello 245luigi,

Yes, I have found bits here and there on Antonio Cornejo Riojano or Rioxano; however, not a lot. I will be focusing my search on him and the Cornejo family. Hopefully we can get some definitive answers about his ancestry and for me personally, about the surname Riojano. Any info or suggestion is appreciated. I will report back any findings.

The Hernández de Arellano family

As I have shared in other media, a Toribio Hernández de Arellano from Salamanca is documented, whose brother Sebastián initiated litigation concerning his nobility on May 15, 1557. Following Sebastián's death in 1568, his widow and children continued the legal proceedings. Significantly, the presence of the Sánchez surname within their lineage may account for its recurrence among Toribio's immediate descendants.

Sebastián Hernández de Arellano "El Viejo" was a resident of the parish (colación) of San Isidro in Salamanca. He held estates (hacendado) in the municipalities of Villares de la Reina, Castellanos de Moriscos, and Villamayor. He initiated a lawsuit to assert his noble status (hijodalgo) after being appointed to the position of procurador, an office typically associated with commoners (pecheros), which he argued was incompatible with his noble standing.

The relevant legal file (Sala de Hijosdalgo. Caja 0774.0035. Real Chancillería de Valladolid) records testimony stating that

Toribio Hernández de Arellano constitutes a sizable portion of our family's ancestry as we descend from 3 of his daughters (through multiple lines, and probably a 4th daughter as well, just not conclusively proven, yet). Another wonderful analysis, Erik Andrés, thank you for sharing. I recall you sharing this information in your forum, and I followed it closely, since this family is also among my ancestors. I’ve also followed your posts regarding this family, Rick, thanks again!

If you don’t already have the signature of Toribio Hernández with which you can make comparisons, in a land & water document dated 26 Sep 1590, in Villa de los Lagos, one of the witnesses presented was Toribio Hernández, and he left his signature and gave his age as “mas de cincuenta años” (bottom right): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-63GH-8?i=422&cat=…

He was also presented as a witness on 4 Apr 1570 in Lagos, in the proceso del Santo Oficio contra Pedro Nuñez; at the time, he held the office of regidor and he gave his age as “mas de 40 años”; unfortunately, these files are currently restricted: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD2-QQN1-2?i=41&cat=3…

Erik Andres Reynoso has posted information on his research into the ancestry of Toribio Hernandez Arellano. His information has a different ancestry than the Toribio of the Golluf family, and also fits the timeline.

1.)- Marcos Hernández, aka Marcos Vizcaíno., [ doublet-maker (jubetero)] married to Francisca Sánchez,

2.)-  ↑ Luis Hernández (alcalde de la Santa Hermandad) married to Isabel Sierra.

3.)- ↑ Sebastián Hernández, [ landlord, (arrendadero)] married to Águeda Sánchez

4.)- ↑ Toribio Hernandez Arellano

Although I have presented a different possibility with the Golluf ancestry, I am leaning towards the lineage that is presented by Erik.  He wrote the following:

“It is documented that a Toribio Hernández de Arellano departed for the Indies in 1549 (PARES, having obtained a license issued in Valladolid by officials of the Casa de la Contratación in Seville) and that he is named in a partition of inheritance (hijuela) in Salamanca alongside his siblings. I had originally written the following paragraph

“Dr Abraham Haim put the the piece that said our Sanchez line descended through Juan Sanchez de Calayatud (aka Isaac Golluf aka Açach Golluf el menor) and not his brother Pedro Sanchez de Calayatud. I knew that Toribios grandfather Alonso Sanchez descended from Alazar Golluf but had originally thought that the descent was though his son Pedro. Dr Haim is the highest authority on these matters so if he says that he descends from Isaac Golluf (Juan Sanchez) then I will go along with him.”

Corrections:

  • After looking at these additional records, I believe that I made a mistake to defer to Dr. Abraham Haim.  The additional records used to come to this conclusion are the multiple records of the lawsuits between Açach  Golluf el menor (aka Juan Sanchez de Calatayud), his brothers, his ex-wife, his stepmother over the inheritance from his father, Alazar (Eleazar) Golluf.     I should not have differed to Dr. Abraham Haim and other genealogists.

Rick,
As you mentioned in another post, Toribio's wife, Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza is not the daughter of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco (who never came to Mexico) and this screws up the genealogy of a lot of people.
I have been looking for the possible parents of Isabel and found one possibility in Diego Hurtado de Mendoza y Aragon (1500-1566) and Maria Mendoza Fonseca (1510-1554).
Are these the real parents of Isabel?
Anothe candidate I have been thinking about is Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, son of Rodrigo Hurtado de Mendoza (1479-?) who was a illegitimate son of Iñigo "el Gran Tendilla" Lopez de Mendoza y Quiñones and Inés de Tapia. Isabel would be the daugther of Inés del Valle y Leyva.

Another question: where could I buy your books?

Hello Mr Ricci,
thank you for your reply and for clearing that up.

I have another question if I may. In the middle of #'s 5 & 6 the paragraph starts with this, " {Isaac has a younger brother Alazar "el menor" named after his paternal grandfather who is called "el Mayor"...", but isn't their paternal grandfather Azach?
I thought Alazar/Altazar/Alcazar was their father.

I'd also like to thank you for something else. I thought I knew/understood a fair amount of what was happening to the Jews in Spain during this era. After reading your posts on Toribio's ancestry, it sparked a greater interest on the subject. After further reading, ( I'm on my second book ), I realized I knew/understood very little, so thank you for that.

Jaime Oceguera

Comment

Dear Jaime,

I fixed that mistake in a later post: Isaac Golluf And Azach "el menor" Golluf are the same person. The youngest brother is named Abraham Golluf (aka Abran Gulluf) and he is the one that ultimately inherited his grandfathers assets. There is another Alazar in the family and many people confuse the two Alazars. It is because of the other Alazar that many people have made erroneous family trees. I clear that up in my book.

I have studied the Jews in Spain for many years, read many books, yet I am often surprised by interesting new information about them and what they went through. Last year I was surprised to learn that many Jews had family members become seminarians and priests so that the family would not get in trouble for being in possession of the religious text.

Another fact that surprised me was the turmoil within the Jewish community between conversos and those that stayed Jewish. Some of them became very angry at each other. Isaac’s brother in laws

Many of the founding families of Nueva Galicia came from noble families. But most of them were younger siblings that did not inherit much from their parents. Many of their parents themselves had been younger members of their families. Many of these younger members had married convers who brought much needed wealth into the family. If the conversos were from the house of David it was easier to claim to be cristiano viejo as this lineage was considered to be Mary's ancestry. The Pope even made a proclamation that they could claim cristiano viejo status. Even a king of Spain made his own proclamation regarding this subject . It was important to him as he too descended from converses from the house of David.

So what this means that the study of the genealogy of these founding families gets a little tricky as we cross the Atlantic because the families were under a lot of pressure to show cristiano viejo status due the turmoil of the inquisition. Tricky because most of the new

Juan Carvajal is called a relative Of Governor Luis Carvajal (el mozo) but I don’t know the exact relationship. He traveled at least a couple of times between Spain and Mexico. Juan was a soldier. He learned the Indian languages from his first trip to Mexico. He worked as a translator for Luis Carbajal. i've always enjoyed all of your theories and Daniel, I actually have a lot
of questions about some of the ones about some of the families I come from,
but about the Hernandez de Arellano family, i was wondering what you both
think the reason is that no one is named after Toribio. in the Romo de
Vivar's theres a bunch of people named Diego and in the Martin de
Sotomayor's a bunch name Andres, but in the Hernandez de Arellano family i
cant think of one person name Toribio, doesnt that seem strange?

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Dear Danny,

The Diego were named "Diego Romo de Vivar", the Andres were named "Andres Martin de Sotomayor", and so on. Back in that century if you named someone after another family member it was the whole name. So when Toribio named his son Gabriel after his paternal uncle he gives him the whole name "Gabriel Sanchez". He wouldn't name him Gabriel Hernandez. The first name "Toribio " goes with the Hernandez line. I have found very few men named Toribio during this time frame. What is interesting is that three of them were surnamed Hernandez.

Another thing to consider is that The first Diego Romo de Vivar and the first Andres Martin de Sotomayor were first born that inherited the vast majority of the family fortune and titles. The first born held a lot of the status in the families. Sometimes the second and third born would have some status when there was a large fortune. But the youngest of the families often had little to no status and often didn't inherit much, if anything

I thought that for New Years I would at least release a little bit of information from my book. So here is something on The Hernandez Arellano Sanchez's ancestors.

The Jewish community of DAvignon, Barcelona, and part of Zaragosa was connected. These families intermarried often. They were of the house of David. These families were highly educated and were involved in commerce. and medicine.

In the D ' Avignon community we find not only the Golluf family but also Michel Notredame's paternal grandfather who converted to Catholicism, divorced his Jewish wife because she refused to convert, and married his third wife, the grandmother of Nostradamus. Many genealogists have a mistake in the family tree on his paternal side. The correct lineage shows him to be a descendant of the family that was part of the families that intermarried with the Gollufs.

Happy New Year,

Many genealogists cannot agree on whether the information on Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza is that she descends from a Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, or that her father is named Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. I hope that those that insist that her father is A Diego Hurtado de Mendoza would present that evidence. Where is the evidence that her father's name is Diego Hurtado de Mendoza?

This Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza Velasco has a father surnamed Velasco and the Mendoza comes from the maternal side, though the father also descends from the Mendozas. She does descend from a Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.

Look at the information that I presented. Has anyone come up with a better candidate? If they have, I haven't seen it.

Hello Danny,

No she is not. Isabel Mendoza de Velasco was a false lead.   She is not the same Isabel de Mendoza.  Isabel Mendoza is, written in some document that I haven’t personally seen, to be be the daughter of a Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.  It would help to get a hold of that document to look for clues. The document needs to be looked over piece by piece.

He had caught my attention because he was commenting on the converso members of Juan de Horozco’s family and because you had recently posted your Toribio Hernandez being from a mixed converso family.

Dear David,

It is a different Toribio Hernandez. I do not know if they are related. The Toribio mentioned in the book is living in Spain and involved with the church. Our Toribio Hernandez Arellano wouldn't volunteer to discuss whether someone was a converso as his grandfathers relatives were involved in the murder of an official of the inquisition. Even to this day, people mistakenly believe that it was his grandfather that was involved in the conspiracy to commit the murder when it was his distant cousin of the same name.

Not only distant relatives involved, but Toribio Hernandez Arellanos grandfather had an older brother, Gabriel Sanchez, whose in laws were found to be involved in the conspiracy to commit murder of the inquisitor. Gabriel Sanchez helped finance Christopher Colombus' trip across the Atlantic. Both Toribios grandfather and Gabriel were friends of Christopher and his father. It is dated 8 August 1573.

The original images are not viewable at peres.mcu.es but the same record is copied in the book “Camcionero / Sebastián de Horozco ; introducción, edición crítica, notas, bibliografía y genealogía de Juan de Horozco por Jack Weiner,” Bern : H. Lang, 1975. Starting on page 325.

The Juan de Horozco Covarrubias mentioned above is the Spanish writer. His father Sebastian de Orozco came from a Converso family. The Toribio Hernandez in the document is commenting on the Converso side of Juan de Horosco’s family – something to do with some cousins through Juan de Hororzco’s paternal grandmother Maria de Soto.

As for Covarrubias, Juan de Horozco’s mother Maria Valero de Covarrubias is the first cousin to the famous bishop Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva. In other documents, this Diego appears as a “deudo” to the Contador Francisco de Covarrubias of Mexico (son of Gaspar de Covarrubias and Margarita de Quijada). I have not seen anything that describes the relation between Diego and Francisco more specifically then “deudo” though.

Please let us know what you find out once you receive the book.

Dear David,

The book already arrived and consists of many poems. I did some research on Juan Horosco de Covarrubias and came up with the following:

Juan Horosco y Covarrubias is the son of Sebastian de Horosco (from Toledo) and Juana Valera de Covarrubias (from Aragon)

Sebastian Horosco is the son of Juan de Horosco and Maria de Soto (conversa)

Juana Valera de Covarrubias is the daughter of Marcos Covarrubias de Leyva and Catalina Valera (Catalina is the daughter of Juan -----Valera, and granddaughter of another Juan -----Valera)

Marcos Covarrubias de Leyva is the son of Sebastian Martinez de Covarrubias and Maria Gutierrez de Leyva

Marcos Covarrubias de Leyvais the brother of Alonso Covarrubias y Leyva who is married to Maria Gutierrez de Egas (Her father, uncles, grandfather, and great uncles are famous architects.) Alonso himself is a famous architect who was a student of his wife's family.

Alonso Covarrubias y Leiva and Maria Gutierrez de Egas are the parents of Gaspar

Thank you for informing me about this Covarrubias discussion. As discussed in the Colio and Covarrubias Thread, I tie in at Gaspar Covarrubias and Margarita Quijada.

How were you able to connect Gaspar to Alonso? Thank you for any info you can provide.

Dear Alex,

I put the family tree and its notes together myself by combining lots of little pieces of the puzzle from different sources. The Capitan in Puebla is said to be gaspars nephew and I have the capitans parents. Francisco was said to be Diego's nephew which is another clue that fits since Alonso is the father of the capitans mother and bishop Diego Covarrubias. They were also related to the Covarrubias from Chile through another sister of Diego and Gaspar. It's a lot of little pieces that when put together you get the family tree that I posted. I do have a primary source record for some of the information but the rest was put together like I said from a puzzle piece here and a puzzle piece there.

What I have not been able to add to the tree is my ancestor, Jose Covarrubias, born about 1659 and married to Leonor Hermosillo (daughter of Pedro Franco de Paredes and Leonor Hermosillo) . Their son Jose Covarrubias (Jr.) married on 20/Aug/1725 to Leonor Sanchez de Porras

Have you been able to locate the marriage record for Jose Covarrubias' first marriage to Margarita Martin del Campo? I haven't been able too and that's where I would hope the parents names would be. I checked the marriage records for his two other wives and no beans :(

Where did you find confirmation that Francisco was Diego's nephew. All I have found is the term "deudo" being used re. their relationship in a primary source. (Informaciones: Francisco de Covarrubias). I also have "Diccionario Biografico del Occidente Novohispano" The entry for Layva y Covarrubias, Don Diego de states "Tio (algunas fuentes menos confiables dicen que primo) de Francisco Covarrubias, contador de...." Source being (Fernandez, 2003: 280) which seems unsure of the relationship. No doubt Gaspar ties into Sebastian Martinez de Covarrubias, I just can't figure out how.

I also haven't been able to find Gaspar in Mexico. I think he was in Spain when Francisco came over. Did Gaspar and Margarita both come

Comment

Whoops sorry about that. I posted about the wrong Joseph Covarrubias. Joseph and Leonor had at least 3 children (Ana Maria 1687, Nicolas 1689 and Leonor 1691) in Tepatitlan so I guess they would have had to been married there

Comment

There is another Gaspar Covarrubias that is married to Catalina Gallardo. There is a record of them baptizing a child on 26/Sep/1632 in Zacatecas. I believe that this Gaspar maybe a son or grandson of Francisco Covarrubias.

The ancestry of Maria Gutierrez de Egas, wife of Alonso Covarrubias y Leyva (1488-1570) is posted on geni with mistakes that people made many years ago. It had been thought that Maria's father was Enrique Egas (senior). The correct genealogy shows that she is the niece of Enrique Egas (senior) and cousin to Enrique Egas (junior).

The Eyck (Eycken) Koemann surname is corrupted/translated into Hegas or Egas. Koemann is changed to Cunen. The van der Eycken brothers are architects from Brussels that go to Spain.

The brothers are Jan van der Eycken (Aka Hanneken (Hanequin) de Bruselas), Anton (Antonio) Martinez de Bruselas, and Egas Cunen (aka Henri van Eycken or Eyck)

Egas Cunen and Mari Gutierrez are the parents of:

1) Margarita Gutierrez de Hegas married to

Comment

Dear Alex,

You are right, I should have written that Diego is mentioned as his tio instead saying that Francisco is his nephew. The one that is mentioned as a nephew of Gaspar is Capitan Melchor de Covarrubias. Gaspar was mentioned as a Conquistador in Mexico but it didn't say if his wife came over. The Capitan Melchor de Covarrubias was mentioned as The conquistadors nephew and his mother is known to be Diego Covarrubias sister. Melchors father was surnamed Pastor and added de Covarrubias to show where he was from. Capitan Melchor used Covarrubias as a surname. Melchors family is mentioned in the story about how they wanted him to be the family priest but he was more interested in being a soldier and then amassing a fortune. He donated money in Puebla and that is why he is called " Fundador del Templo y del Colegio del Espiritu Santo" en "Puebla de Los Angeles" in Mexico in his will, Melchor left a lot of money to the church in Puebla.

I couldn't read Catalina Valero's father's name, or her grandfather's name. I had guessed poorly and thought I was reading "Jn.-------Valera" but it turns out that it reads Juan Perez Valero but another source names his parents as Pedro Valero Puerta and Juana Lopez. Both are primary sources so Juan Perez Valero or Pedro Valero Puerta depending on what someone understands from the scribbles

The second mistake is more important to us as this one had to do with the Covarrubia ancestry.

Miguel Sanchez Dalmau did not have any brothers as he is identified as the only son.. I don't know how many sisters he had as I have only found this one sister so far.

So you're saying that Miguel Sanchez and Isabel Hernandez de Hijar Ramirez de Arellano are the parents of Toribio? If so, I can go ahead and make the changes to that on the geni.com website.

Comment

There are a few issues that I would like to inform you about.

Miguel Sanchez Dalmau is how we would name him today with the paternal and maternal surnames. In Spanish(Castilian) he was known as Miguel Sanchez but in the area that he lived most of his life his name is written "Miguel Sanchis".

Isabel Hernandez de Hijar y Ramirez Arellano is how we would write her name today yet she was known as "Isabel de Yxar".

The third issue is the one brought up in a communication of my findings with Steven Hernandez. Steven reminded me that "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link." He asked me to identify the weakest link, if any. I responded by informing him of the following:

I did a lot of work getting the correct ancestry of Miguel Sanchez Dalmau to Pedro Sanchez ((I) (title:Caballero),and to Alfonsina Baron (o Varon). On many documents it is stated that they descend from Alazar (Eleazar Golluf). So working with the timelines and the information that I had, I had originally

Comment

R.A.,

I agree that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. So, I'm curious, what is the actual evidence that Toribio is the son of Miguel Sanchez and Isabel Fernandez de Hijar? Or even a little evidence that suggests a possible link between them? Is there any evidence that Miguel even had a son named Toribio? I've always been confused at attempts to link Toribio with the Fernandez de Hijar family, when there is a known Spanish compound surname of "Fernandez de Arellano," why doesn't it make more sense that Toribio just descends from someone named Fernandez de Arellano?

Comment

People kept asking me to identify Toribios parents. I often responded that I would finish my book soon. The problem is that I am not close to finishing my book. I knew that there would be questions regarding his ancestry if I just named his parents without presenting all the pieces of the puzzle that together lead to this identification. That is why I used the word possible instead of probable. I also knew that if I just presented his parents without identifying the correct ancestral line that people will pick up erroneous lines of ancestry. There are lines presented by other genealogists, even in the sixteenth century, that are not correct. There is a line presented in a "libro verde" that has many mistakes on this families family tree. That is why I present Miguel Sanchez Dalmau's ancestral line even though I have not included all the information from my book.

Miguel's grandfather Alfonso (II) is often confused with Alfonso (I) the jurist(lawyer) so historians and genealogists mix

Comment

R.A. Ricci, have you found more settlers from Los Altos with converso background? Would it seem logical the earliest families marrying into Toribio de Arellano's family were of the same converso background? It's my understanding converso families often married into each other. I haven't been on this website for many years and maybe this topic has already been discussed.

Comment

Dear Alice,

You are correct that it is logical that the earliest families marrying into Toribio’s family have a similar ancestral background of a mixture of “old Christian” and “converso”. There are many settlers from Los Altos that had this similar background ancestry. Many of the settlers of Los Altos were “third sons, of third sons, of third sons, of nobility or royalty”. What this means is that they were usually not the son, or grandson of first born in a family that would inherit the family title and the bulk of the family estate. A “third son, of a third son, of a third son” meant that you were a great grandson of someone who left you with little inheritance of titles or money. “Third sons” of “third sons” often married wealthy “conversos” who brought much needed infusion of cash to the marriage. So even though conversos did often marry other conversos, there was also a mixture of nobility with conversos, as someone who came from a titled background would marry someone

I discovered the Hernandez Sanchez ancestry while looking for Isabel Mendozas ancestry.

I had also been working on the Fernandez de Hijar family and Christopher Colombus's genealogy. The three separate research projects crossed paths when I found documentation that stated that this Sanchez family had family members that were close friends to Domenico and Christopher had intermarried repeatedly with the Mendozas.

My research then switched to finding out which members of this Sanchez family had married Mendozas and found that Miguel Sanchis Dalmau had married a granddaughter to a Mendoza and that I already had them in my Fernandez de Hijar records.

Then I discovered that the sanchez de Calayatud family was actually the Golluf Family.

The statement that this Sanchez family had repeatedly married Mendozas was the lightbulb that I saw flashing before me.

I put aside my research on Isabel Mendoza even though I felt that I had a few threads to pull because I became

Dear Danny,

Miguel Sanchez Dalmau is married to Isabel Hernandez de Ijar. Isabel's parents are juan Fernandez de Hijar y Enriquez and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano y Hurtado de Mendoza.

Juan is the son of Luis Fernandez de Hijar y Beaumnont and Guiomar Enriquez y Guzman

Isabel Ramirez de Arellano is the daughter of Alfonso Ramirez de Arellano y Enriquez and Catalina Hurtado de Mendoza y Luna

I added the maternal surnames but they often did not write their names using both a paternal and maternal surname. You get to a point where the surnames are not passed down but the surname is the persons father's first name. My Great Grandfather Donaciano Diaz de Leon was also born in 1893 but he was born in La Montesa, Zac. His father's name was Rodrigo Diaz de Leon and his mother was Filiberta Gonzalez both also from La Montesa, Zac.

If your great grandfather was named Donaciao Diaz born in Aguas in 1893, then you are welcome as the lineage is accurate just not of my line.

Sebastian Lopez Ramirez and Luis Lopez Ramirez were not brothers

Many genealogists have Luis Lopez Ramirez and Sebastian Lopez Ramirez as brothers because Jaime Holcombe incorrectly  stated in his cartas that they were brothers.  They have even put this false information on wikitree and stated that it was a fact.  These two men are related through marriage, but they aren't brothers. I won’t go into how they are related by marriage here in order to not confuse the issue as my intent here is to show that they aren't brothers.

Luis Lopez Ramirez is the son of Luis Lopez and Isabel Sanchez.  This Luis Lopez Ramirez is married to Catalina Rubio, daughter of Pedro Hernandez and Maria Rubio.

Sebastian Lopez Ramirez, aka Sebastian Ramirez, is the son of Andres Lopez and Isabel Ramirez, and Sebastian’s wife, Ana de la Cueva aka Ana de la Cueva y Sandoval, is the daughter of Pedro Garcia de la Cueva and Maria Teresa Sandoval (Pedro is the son of Alonso Hernandez de Rebollar and Maria Hernandez de la Cueva).

Andres is the son of Alvaro Lopez and Catalina Lopez.

Later I will look for the list I have of four other errors that I have seen on wikitree. I don’t recall right now where I put that list. I made that list when someone else asked me about errors that I had seen on wikitree.

I do recall that one of the mistakes that is on wikitree is the Sotelo lineage.   You have the wrong Antonio Sotelo.  You have listed the Conquistador Antonio Sotelo.

I have not connected the Romo family to the ha Levi family but it would not surprise me.  My Grandfather J HERMENEGILDO Romo Franco told me that we descended from Jews but never gave details.   He stated that presently our family was Roman Catholic but that family had a past with a different religion.   It was his way of saying that we had Jewish ancestors.   But these Jewish ancestors that he was talking about could have come from any of his ancestral lines, and not from a direct Romo ancestry. My grandfather is a third cousin to Santo Toribio Romo twice.

Hello Alice,

I would have liked to have seen that lineage that you say was erased. Many lineages that uncover jewish ancestors have been erased    It is a complex and touchy subject with many people and that is why the inquisition is a topic that is seldom talked about. Claims of Jewish ancestry is complex.

Diego Romo de Vivar’s grandfather, Juan Luis del Rincon, was an official of the inquisition.   The family was Catholic in the 1500’s.   Claims of any Jewish ancestors would have to be in the 1400’s or before.   The Romos in the Villas de Rielves, Fuensalida, Fuentes, and Borox were practicing Roman Catholics.    Diego Romo de Vivar’s great uncle, brother to his grandfather, is Rafael del Rincon who was also an official of the inquisition.   The claims that the Romo family ancestral line had a Jewish background has been unverified, but they go back to a Jewish woman in the 1300’s.  But as of this date, May 21, 2026, I have not been able to find any primary documents that connect to

Thank you, Mr. Ricci. I am certain that there is a Jewish connection to the Romo family. The article that I previously inquired about cites the name of one of my ancient direct ancestors in Spain as having been Jewish. This would be Maria Rangel del Peguero, wife of Diego Romo de Vivar. This is why I would like to obtain a complete copy of this presentation/article.  Also, I had a medical doctor that was an expert on Hispanic/Jewish genealogy and a bishop in the Church of the Latter-Day Saints that both seemed very confident that Romo has a Sephardic connection.

Should I obtain a complete copy of this document, I will try to re-post it in Nuestros Ranchos for others to study.

Hi Rick and others who have responded to my comment.

I looked back through earlier comments and found one by Raul Munoz who describes this early decree - he mentions this document in a comment here is this thread on 2019-10-08 21:28. My apologies to Raul, that I forgot I had seen his earlier post!

I think the significance of the document must lie in the fact that the Leonor de Valderrama who is identified at the mother of Fernando and wife of Diego Arias Sotelo, is also identfied as the granddaughter of Moctezuma, and that the document was created - timewise - close to Moctezuma and people who knew him and his children. This should help settle the debate about whether the wife of Diego Arias Sotelo also descended from Cortez (she did not...).

There is another entry in PARES, Archivo General de Indias - licencia de pasajeros a criados de Leonor de Valderrama - from 1546, but unfortunately there are no images of it, so its not possible to confirm its the Leonor Valderrama subject

I just found a dowry record of another ancestor of mine, Berenguela De Montemayor, that names her father as Martin Alfonso De Montemayor. He does not name Berenguela in his will. Married daughters were often excluded from wills. This female ancestor was a great grandmother of Ruy Diaz De Mendoza. This is the documented line of ancestry of Ruy Diaz De Mendoza that is married to Catalina Salazar. This is another of multiple instances that I have seen where a daughter who is named as receiving a dowry from their father is not named in his will as he has already “ taken care “ of her financially.

The Lope Ruiz De Esparza record that I saw only named his mother-in-law as Moctezuma’s granddaughter, but Guillermo Teresa De Tovar notified me that he had a record in his possession that identified her as part of the Sotelo Moctezuma family. He did not show it to me but he did send me a “verbatim quote”. He said that he would send me a copy but he passed away before was able to pass it on

I'm new to the family of Petronila's descendants. A very distant cousin of mine posted a family tree on Ancestry with 33,000 people including my 8th great grandparents, Joseph de Contreras and Cecilia de Renteria. My cousin doesn't list her sources on Ancestry so I have been slowly researching and documenting each person. Today, I made the mistake of picking up Chipman's book which says my 13th GGM Petronila de Sotelo doesn't exist. Ancestry.com and Family Search seem to back him up.

All the records people cite are not of Petronila. I want to prove she existed. Does anyone know where and when her name first appeared?

What do you know about Martin de Gabay Navarro? My first question is, "Is his name Navarro de Gabay or de Gabay de Navarro? (Martin Navarro from Gabay or Martin de Gabay from Navarre?). I'm starting to realize that some of these names are places.

Can someone tell me what PARES and SHARR are? I want more places to dig. I'm stubborn and I just finished an MS in Business

Rachel,

That is the question we have all been asking … I believe that there is at least one Informaciones Matrimoniales that state that Petronila was Moctezuma’s granddaughter … at least that is what memory serves. The million dollar question is who her parents were. Supposedly, Guillermo Tovar de Teresa had located proof of her parentage and supporting the theory that she was daughter of Diego Sotelo; unfortunately, he died before he was able to publish his findings. However, he did share his information with Mariano González-Leal so there is hope to getting our questions answered.

As fo Martin … I believe he was Martin de Gabay, el Navarro. However, he has been referred to as Martin Navarro as well.

If you look back in the archives on Nuestros Ranchos, you will see that this topic is pretty well covered.

I've spent my morning/early afternoon researching this topic. I read the portion of Margo Tamez' dissertation on Indigenous Women in regard to Petronila. She lists a marriage record but it is not on Family Search. Is there another LDS repository that I am unaware of?

PETRONILA DE MOCTEZUMA, b. Aguascalientes, Abt. 1550. Married to Martin Navarro.

If Lope Ruiz de Esparza was correct in calling her "Moctezuma's grand daughter" then she is not the daughter of Leonor and Diego. She cannot be Valderrama's daughter because he died in 1537 and Petronila was born around 1552.

Comment

She would have to be a g-grand daughter of Moctezuma. I don’t remember the exact verbage but I do know the there has been confusion with all the Leonor’s in this line. As for other records … the Informaciones Matrimoniales are usually not in the database. Those you have to look at the actual film which is probably available on-line.

You have peaked my interest. I will take a look at the dissertation you mentioned and as well as the LDS record so I can see what you see. Also, I will see if I have links to any documents that mention them.

Hello Rachel, Batch # F868769, Sheet 031, Source 1396289 would have been created by Jaime Holcombe Isunza, q.e.p.d., and are not available online. See http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14203#comment-29226 and https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/319732?availability=Family%…

I have copies of some of his Family Group Sheets. They have names of the esposo, esposa, sometimes the names of the parents of the esposo and esposa, the names of the children of the esposo and esposa, and their children and the spouse of the children and the dates of each of them as well as the source information. Unfortunately the source information is the film number in Mexico and not the LDS film number but if there is a number it means there is a microfilm with information about one or more of the family members. By now we would have copies of all of the information on the sheets since they are all based on the same microfilms that have been digitized and placed online.

I got a family tree from a distant cousin. I am still trying to sort the truth from fiction. Ironically, I had ironed out the link to Moctezuma that I thought was iffy when I found out Petronilla was iffy.

I get to royalto via Pedro de Sotelo, the alleged father of both Antonio de Sotelo (Diego's father) and Christobal Valderrama. I have to look at my records but I believe I proved Antonio is the son of Pedro but I don't know why I have Cristobal as the son of Pedro de Sotelo and Ines Cisneros. Pedro de Sotelo goes to a King of Portugal, once I got there I just used history sites.

I found a lot of info here: https://www.genealogieonline.nl/en/ which ancestry.com uses as a source. However, now that I have more experience in online genealogical research, I am not sure what type of site it is and if its reliable. I'm not sure if it's a European Records repository similar to Family Search or a crowd sourced tree like WikiTree.

I just found this by googling but who put it up there

Hi Rachel

It's wonderful to see your enthusiasm! There will be brick walls, but the only thing to do it move on to another branch for a while where you can make progress. I find that if I take a break from one line, and pick it up later, I discover new info or see something I overlooked.

My best advice is to rely on original documents - church or civil records of birth, marriage, death, infomacion matrimoniales, etc. - I use FamilySearch and sometimes ancestry as a way in. Other - secondary - sources can point you in the right direction, give you a good lead, but I would not base my family tree on these (published article and books by historians who provide their sources are another matter though). I save links, source citations, and screenshots in google docs, and print out now and then. This is especially important when a film is not indexed and has to be reviewed image by image. The work is very painstaking, but also rewarding when you make a discovery that pushes a line back

Hi Denise,

The furthest I can prove with records at the moment is the line from my mom to Lope Ruiz de Ezparza el menor and his wife Ana Francisca de Gabay or Navarro or whatever her father's name was. I have seen records or books naming Lope's parents but I don't have those records saved to Ancestry.com.

Cristobal de Valderrama was Mariana Leonor Moctezuma's second husband, father of Leonor Valderrama Moctezuma and father in law of Diego Arias de Sotelo. I have him as "de Valderrama" which is how I have seen him listed. I thought it was because he was from Valderrama, Burgos, Casile & Leon, Spain. It's near the border between Castile and Basque country. I've only seen his name in books which I didn't screenshot.

I am going to start doing that now. I've been reading other trees on Ancestry. A lot of them have notes and some have photos of records. I think a lot of people may keep their sources offline. I can't imagine knowing what someone did for a living without having a record

In case any of you don’t have this, here’s the 27 Aug 1594 IM of Cristobal Sotelo Valderrama and Juana de Heredia Patiño, hija de Baltasar de Vargas cc Francisca de Heredia. Apparently, Cristobal’s sister was “maliciously” opposed to this union. I don’t know if the marriage ever happened.

DIEGO ORTIZ DE SAAVEDRA

Rachel - according to the info that his son gave when taking his orders, the elder Diego Ortiz de Saavedra was from Almendralejo, Badajoz, Extremadura. His parents’ names aren’t given, but they were also residents of Almendralejo, Valladolid isn’t mentioned. Catalina Muñoz was daughter of Francisco Muñoz and Luisa de Nava, of Lagos.
Otherwise, Diego Ortiz was confirmed as alguacil mayor (high sheriff) of Lagos, Aguascalientes and Teocaltiche on 26 Feb 1611, as per PARES. That document doesn’t give any more info, other than his name is written Diego Ortiz de Saavedra y Paradas.

That’s interesting, what that book says about Beatriz mulata, the mother of the younger Diego

Hi Manny

This is wonderful! Thanks for posting the link, I can see it states both Christobal's parents are deceased. Looking forward to trying the read why his sister was opposed to the marriage!

THe marriage did go through, and when Christobal died, Juana inherited his share of Ecatepec and then sued to get half of Christobal's sister's share of Ecatepec. Had she not done that, all of sister Ana's share would have gone to Fernando Sotelo de Moctezuma. (The three siblings had each inherited a third). This is described in more detail in Moctezuma's Children by Donald E. Chipman, p. 81.

Here’s something of interest to anyone else who has Muñoz de Nava in their lines: while reviewing Diego Ortiz de Saavedra’s ordenes, I saw something I hadn’t noticed before: one of the testigos was Capitan Francisco Tavera, age 70+ (img100R). He says that he remembers when Diego Ortiz was baptized (on 12 Aug 1601), “because the previous year, this witness married Luisa de Nava, the grandmother of aforementioned Diego Ortiz.” That’s news to me - I’ve never seen any mention of this marriage before! That tells us that Francisco Muñoz died before 1600, when Luisa de Nava married Francisco Tavera. As to the identity of

I found a document in Somos Primos when I was looking up the de Anda-Altamiranos (another of my Lagos lines) which also read "Don Diego Ortiz de Saavedra, alguacil mayor y también de los primeros pobladores de Lagos, cuando él muere, su esposa, Doña Catalina Muñoz de Jerez." vs Catalina Munoz de Nava. I also show a Cathalina Lopez de Nava as the wife of Juan Gomez de Portugal. My sources are starting to contradict themselves!

The document is almost to the bottom of the page it's called La Hacienda de San Nicola de Frias by Guillermo Padilla Origel

Dear Rachel,

If you have done lots of research you will find that sometimes sources contradict each other. You then need More research and mental gymnastics to figure our the possible reasons for the contradictions and the true ancestry. There is another contradiction in the ancestry of the Gómez de Portugal ancestry. One ancestry shows Diego Gómez de Portugal to be a great-grandson of a king of Portugal, while another ancestry shows a different great grandfather

Good Luck in your research,

Hi Rachel,

After reading through the Guillermo Padilla Origel piece that you cited, I think I can see the source of some of the contradictions. Except for maybe the land titles, almost everything he says about the Ortiz de Saavedra’s is incorrect. I’ve read other articles by Padilla Origel in the past, and he seems to get people with the same names mixed up. It makes me wonder if he ever backed up his work with documentation, or did any cross referencing? Catalina Muñoz was not a Muñoz de Jerez: as established in the orders of her son, Diego Ortiz “el Mozo,” she was daughter of Francisco Muñoz and Luisa de Nava. The Muñoz de Jerez of Lagos descend from Luisa de Nava’s sister, Catalina Lopez, who was married to Rodrigo Muñoz de Jerez. And Diego Ortiz and Catalina Muñoz did have a daughter named Maria Ortiz de Saavedra, but she was married to Fernando de Costilla y Espinosa, and not to Alonso Sanchez Bañales and Mateo de Villanueva. The one who married them was her cousin, Maria Ortiz

Hi Manny,

I bought "Colonial Spanish America: A Documentary History" by Taylor and Mills because I saw screenshot of it somewhere in regard to Diego Ortiz de Saavedra. I had not idea there was more than one Diego Ortiz de Saavedra. As I read it, my 12th GGPs Luisa Ortiz de Saavedra and Juan Saez de Viduarre were upset because Diego, Jr. left Beatriz his property. Juan was the magistrate. Beatriz was the mistress of several notable local men in Lagos and she was a bitch to Diego Jr.'s slaves, regardless much to my GGPs chagrin she was aquitted. Beatriz had been freed for a while at this point.

The reason I thought Diego Sr. came from Valladolid is because I saw something stating that Luisa was born there but that doesn't mean he was from there. The Parada name comes from Maria Ortiz de Saavedra's children. She was Luisa's younger sister. She married Sebastian Parada. Since I'm currently researching my direct line, I don't know much about them but I will get to them at somepoint

Comment

That's Cristobal Sotelo Valderamma, Cristobal de Valderamma's grandson. I don't understand how the honorific "Don" would help distinguish them, aren't they both "Dons"? It *does* explain the source that I saw that thought Cristobal, Sr. was a Sotelo.

Ana was a nun, perhaps Juana was of a similar disposition to Beatriz but without the extenuating circumstances.

Ana and Cristobal, Jr. (and Fernando) bring us back to Petronila Moctezuma, mother in law of Lope Ruiz de Esparza and "grand daughter of Moctezuma". Cristobal, Jr., Ana and Fernando were Moctezuma's great-grandchildren and Petronila's sibling based on the most common place she is placed in the genealogies.

Happy New Year,

Rachel,

I was very surprised to hear about Conquistador Cristóbal Valderrama’s ancestry as I don’t even know who his parents are. The information that I have is that:

He was accused of being a practicing Jew.
He was from “Valderrama, partido de la Sierra en Tobalina, Burgos, Castilla y León, Spain”,
He was born in 1490/1495 in Barcelona, provincia da Cataluña, Spain,
He married Mariana “Leonor” Moctezuma in 1931 as her second husband,
He is mentioned in the early history of Michoacan where he was given the encomienda of Tarimbaro in 1526. His wife Mariana/ Leonor already owned the encomienda of Ecatepac prior to their marriage.
He passed away in Ciudad Mexico, D.F., Mexico in November of 1537.

I don’t have any records at all indicating leads as to who his parents are, or any mention of a descent from Charlemagne. I would appreciate any information on Cristóbal Valderrama’s ancestry.

Hi Rick

I have been trying to remember the name of the Sotelo lady who was Lutheran in the 16th century, I think it was Marina de Saavedra, married to Pedro Cisneros de Sotelo.

Very interesting story about her, written by Doris Moreno Martinez:

With regard to the parentage of Diego ARias de Sotelo, the problem has been to document that his father was the Sotelo who accompanied Hernan Cortes. To my knowledge, we do not have a source on that. It would have been great if Diego Sotelos Confirmation de Oficio of 1559 had

Dear Denise,

Even though she was convicted for practicing Lutheranism, it appears that she was innocent in the sense that she believed that she was deepening her faith in Christianity, and did not see her self as practicing anything other than the Catholic religion. Her participation in prayer and scripture study groups seemed to her to be a deepening of her Catholic faith. She was a woman full of love for her neighbors and should have been considered a saint instead of a heretic. Her biggest mistake it seems was taking to heart the teachings of Erasmus. I only call it a mistake because of the persecution that she suffered because of it. She wasn’t the only Sotelo family member that was accused of heresy. What makes her stand out is her “innocence” just jumps out to the reader when you read about her life.

There was much controversy over the writings of Erasmus as he preached that the spread of Classical knowledge encouraged a better morality and greater understanding between

Hi Rick

Thanks for the info on Marina de Saavedra, she was truly a courageous person during a time when a challenge to the Catholic church's dogma (or actions the church perceived as a challenge) could get you burned as a heretic - this was in fact the fate of her nephew Pedro de Sotelo. She herself was imprisoned for life at the order of the Inquisition. The record of her trial reveals that she both denied heresy and admitted to having believed, for a period of time, some of the heretical (Lutheran) doctrine. What she ultimately believed in her heart we will never know - she had a husband, two daughters and many sons who lives would be affected if she did not reconcile with the church. (This is from the text I mentioned in my previous post)... And yes, Erasmus is also a fascination figure that I know all too little about - added to my list of persons to read up on :)

Hi Denise,

Marina de Saavedra was the wife of Pablo Cisneros Sotelo. Pablo is a brother of Conquistador Antonio Sotelo Cisneros. The Sotelo family that went to South America used Cisneros as the first surname Marina has her name written many different ways in the inquisition records: Sayabedra, Saavedra, Sallebedra are some of the surnames she used. Her first name has been given as Marina and Ana.

Pablo Cisneros Sotelo and Antonio de Sotelo y Cisneros are sons of don Pedro de Sotelo and doña Inés de Cisneros. Pablo and Antonio have two other brothers named Gregorio and Juan. Pedro’s father is Lope Sotelo. Pedro Sotelo has at least two brothers named Francisco and Alonso.

Even though Marina Saavedra was sentenced to life in prison on 21/May/1559, by 1567 she had already been allowed to return to her home.

One of the officials of the inquisition is a family member of the Sotelo family. I don’t know the exact relationship. His name is Inquisitor General Diego de Deza

Hi Rick and Denise,

Can you fill me in on the Saavedras? I found a couple of them in the records on Ancestry.com. Luisa Ortiz de Saavedra wife of Juan Saez De Vidaurri in 1620. Her parents are listed as Diego Hortiz Saavedra and Carolina Muñoz. These Saavedras are from Valladolid Spain. Juan Saenz is from Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico, where generations of my ancestors seem to have lived for generations. Diego is a dead end because there are too many people with similar names. A younger Diego Ortiz was a priest in Lagos who had a child with a "shameless mulatta" named Beatriz who later poisoned him as per "Colonial Spanish America: A Documentary History edited by Kenneth Mills, William B. Taylor"

I've ordered a copy from Amazon becuase it appears to cover Lagos.

As a descendant of Moctezuma, Leonor de Valderrama inherited the encomendera of Tarimbaro and Ecatepec. She is thought to have died around 1562. When her husband was exiled to Spain in 1568, managing the encomendera fell to her oldest son, Fernando. In his book "Moctezuma's Children: Aztec Royalty under Spanish Rule, 1520-1700", author Donald E. Chipman writes that Fernando's inheritance was contested by his brother, Cristobal. In 1588, after a twenty year legal battle, the Audiencia of new Spain ruled in favor of Fernando. However, Cristobal appealed the decision. In 1593, Fernando was forced to divided the estates into three equal shares with one share going to Fernando, one share going to Cristobal, and one share going to their sister, Ana. As a young maiden, Ana made the decision to dedicate her life to her faith and became a nun serving in the convent of Santa Clara in Mexico City. She renounced her share in favor of her brothers.

I am assuming that Mr.Chipman thoroughly reviewed

Some wills name all the children, while giving the inheritance to only some of the children. On many occasions I have come across wills that don’t identify all the children, naming only those that are chosen to inherit. Not only have I seen this in my research, I have also experienced this personally in my own family. Some times children are not named in wills. Sometimes the parents only left the inheritance only to the eldest of their children. I have a family member that wrote his will that only gave an inheritance to the youngest half of his children. I had a great uncle that excluded a child from his will because he secretly provided that child with a sizable chunk of change before he passed away. He wanted to make sure that there weren’t bad feelings as to who got what after he passed away. Hi rlm99x

I wondered about this too, (I have Chipmans book) but in colonial Mexico, when a daughter gets married her father gives her a dowry (dota). It would then make sense that she would not get a part of the estate upon her fathers death. I am sure I read this somewhere back in my anthropology grad student days. Anyone else ever hear of this? Because it would explain why Petronila is not a part in her brother's lawsuit. I also wondered if it was convenient for Fernando, as his first order of business after his father was exiled, to get Petronila married off.

Best Regards,

Comment

It is certainly a possibility that if Petronila received a dowry she may have been excluded from receiving any additional benefits from her parents. It appears no one has seen a testament from Leonor Valderrama or Diego de Arias. What is clear is that Diego named Fernando as his heir.

For those that have not looked at the website, Spain has made many of their documents accessible through the Portal de Archivos Espanoles. It includes a royal decree, sought by Diego, dated May 27, 1573.

The reference to Hernando is a transcription error. The document clearly says Fernando. The original document can be viewed as well.

If Fernando is the heir apparent, why did Cristobal

I too would like to see a document, a primary source that connects Petronila with Diego Arias de Sotelo and Leonor de Valderrama y Moctezuma. I have the same questions you do. Some years back I spent time searching PARES for documents involving Diego Arias Sotelo and his sons. That was when I found a letter dated 1582 - Carlos Peredo was able to compare a signature on this document with a known signature of Diego Arias de Sotelo and we now can be reasonably sure the one from 1582 is also Diego. Carlos was also able to transcribe parts of it. (So at least we knew he didn't die on a ship of the coast of Oran. He was sentenced to that fate for his role in the conspiracy of the the mid 1560's involving, among others, Hernan Cortez's sons.) Regarding PARES, there are lots of documents with his name, and I only saw the tip of the iceberg. I hope some has the time to do further research there, and can read colonial Spanish. At any rate, his testamento would have to be after the

People question Petronila’s ancestry even though I have repeatedly stated that I have seen proof of her ancestry. I don’t mind people saying that they are not convinced, and won’t be convinced, until they see the document themselves. If I were in their place I too would say “Show me the money”.

On that day that I took the day off from work to go to the library I was inundated with guilt. I didn’t tell my wife and snuck into the library like a thief. It was the last day before it was to be shut down for “six months” for renovation. The renovation took much, much longer than six months, about two years. I no longer feel guilty for indulging in my

Hola prim@s,

You’ve all made great points, and thanks for sharing your thoughts & findings.

I have no doubts that Rick saw that document. We now know it exists, and hopefully, some day, someone will locate it. From Rick’s description, it doesn’t appear to explain the relationship, other than Lope Ruiz de Esparza’s suegra “was a granddaughter of Moctezuma II.” That said, Moctezuma II had numerous wives and concubines, and fathered dozens of children, so the relationship doesn’t necessarily have to be through Diego Arias & Leonor Valderrama (as someone else once pointed out in another NR thread). We all just might be barking up the wrong branch of the tree.

That’s my 2 cents.Thanks!

Diego Romo de Vivar

Good day.

I would like to share a summary of the findings Jorge Barba Gómez and I addressed recently regarding Captain Diego Romo de Vivar (see Facebook).

In 2024, we discovered that the parentage attributed to Captain Diego Romo de Vivar for decades was incorrect. A baptismal record from Rielves, dated March 12, 1589, had been erroneously linked to him due to a paleographic error. That record actually identifies a Diego, son of Diego Alonso (written as "Diego Aº") and Catalina Pérez, not Diego Romo. This distinction is further confirmed by the file INQUISICION,1222,Exp.12.

Our latest research confirms that the Captain, while a resident of San Felipe, Guanajuato, the home of his wife’s family, the Rangel Peguero, had a brother named Alonso de la Fuente in 1630 (see Siglo XVIII Asuntos Varios: Morelia. Registros varios 1630). We have verified that he was indeed his brother, not his brother-in-law.

Furthermore, researcher Manny Diez shared a finding indicating that an Alonso de la Fuente

Juan Fuentes had a first marriage prior to his marriage to Ynes del Rincon

What is interesting about the next line is tha JUan Romo’s father is not surnamed Romo, his mother is the Romo:

On more than one occasion I have found someone surnamed Diaz to later find them with the longer surname Diaz de Vivar.

Saludos Erik,

Hello Erik,

I applaud your focus on the De Vivar (de Bibar) family as most other searches have focused primarily on the Romo surname.  And most searches have focused on the name Diego Romo, as the name Diego is repeated often in each family in Spain, and the name Diego Romo de Vivar is repeated in Nueva Galicia. But the name Pedro is also repeatedly found in Spain and Nueva Galicia, which leads me to the following question:

Can you add any information on Pedro de Bibar (de Vivar) and his wife Catalina Romo (daughter of Pedro de Vivar is from Fuensalida that are mentioned in the document you provided?  Is this Pedro de Vivar and Catalina Romo  the same couple that you mentioned earlier.

Pedro Rincon de Ortega is named as Diego Romo de Vivar’s uncle.   It is most likely that Pedro is a “tio abuelo” as Pedro’s parents are Francisco Rincon de Vivar y Romo and Maria de La Vega. Pedro Rincon’s paternal grandparents are Luis Rincon and Maria Romo. I believe that this Maria Romo the

In many cases where someone is illegitimate someone in the family tries to hide that fact and makes up a different family connection. Many years ago I shared the following information based on a primary source, a will, that clearly identifies  Pero (Pedro) Gonzalez de Alcocer is his father. Fernando Diaz de Alcocer is the grandfather to Jurado “Diego Diaz de Alcocer”.

I find Diego de Alcocer listed as a son to Fernan Diaz de Alcocer as passing away at a young age, way too young to have left descendants.

Later on when the family all of Fernan’s children are recorded in a document you don’t find Diego’s name there because he had already passed away.    The other Diego Alcocer is from an illegitimate relationship that his son the priest had.

Consequently, the existence of Diego Romo de Vivar Pérez is disproven by these records also. The individual in question is actually Diego Alonso Pérez (Fernández), who served as a Familiar del Santo Oficio like his father and was established and married in Madrid.

Thanks again Erik as your last post proves without a doubt that the two Diego’s aren’t the same person.  I did not have that information regarding the Diego being part of the inquisition and that he continued to live in Madrid so I mistakenly thought that maybe it was still possibly our Diego Romo de Vivar.  This hammers the nails into the coffin to that idea.

Dear Rick and Austin,

It is a pleasure to reconnect. I am pleased that this has sparked further research, and I hope it leads to new findings.

Regarding the ancestry of Diego Romo de Vivar: we can no longer identify him as the son of Diego Romo and Catalina Pérez. The 1587 baptismal record previously attributed to him actually belongs to Diego Alonso Pérez, son of Diego Alonso (Fernández) and Catalina Pérez (daughter of Diego Pérez and Inés Gómez). Previous researchers mistook Aº (Alonso) for Rº (Romo).

I have developed an extensive family tree that incorporates the ejecutorias de hidalguía of the Vivar family, who were Mozárabes from Toledo, tracing back to the progenitors Rodrigo de Vivar and Juana Gómez de Alarcón. We must proceed carefully; the Romo family relations are exceptionally complex and frequently intersect with the aforementioned lineages. For instance, Diego Pérez (husband of Inés Gómez) was the brother of Juan de Fuentes, who married Inés del Rincón. As you noted Rick, and

Thank you very much Erik for your research into the Romo family.  It is with great pleasure that I read your notes on your research as it coincides with my research into the Romo family. No contradictions from my research at all.   The only question that was not in my notes at all was the possible family connection Alonso de La Fuente and Diego Romo.

I would like to point out that a Diego Alonso was a neighbor in conflict with Diego el Romo so maybe researching the conflict between them may possibly disclose a family connection between them.  Or at least identify exactly where they lived. You can find the document in PARES.

And don’t forget to keep an eye out for Pedro el Romo Velasco as he came over in 1585 and I have a feeling that he is also part of the family tree.

Thanks again for your research into my Romo family.

While looking for my ancestors I came across the true ancestry and began researching and writing about his family over 20 years ago.  I had over 200 pages written when someone else wrote a book with a different twist than my ancestry for him.   I was dumbfounded and wondered how all of my research showed a certain ancestry while this other book showed a different ancestry for his mother.  I did even more research and my research confirmed my findings while this other author put out another book where he doubled down on his findings.  And his findings hung on the word “brother”.  It wasn’t until Steven Francisco Hernandez Lopez, a genealogist that I greatly admire, made a mistake in putting a family tree together because a brother in law had been called

Diego Romo and Juan Romo are brothers.

Juan Romo is the father of Maria Romo that married Pedro Rico.  (Pedro Rico is the son of Juan Martin Rico and Marina Gomez).

Juan de Fuentes and Ines del Rincon are the parents of Rafael Rincon

Diego Romo el Viejo’s son Diego Romo was also known as el moço

First off I would like to thank you for looking into this for me.

Looking at the birth records for the the 3 boys Antonio, Diego and Juan, Who were born to Miguel Munoz and Mariana Gomez. There is no reference of the Rubio name attached to Miguel. However the baptism record for child of Diego and Josepha is in the right time period. Diego's parents were listed as Miguel Munoz and Mariana Gomez in his baptism, so I don't think Rubio is part of this family, or at least I have not been able to confirm yet. The search continues .

Greetings,

I began my genealogy journey several years back researching my maternal grandfather's line.  My grandfather's mother (my great-grandmother) is originally from Ciudad Guzman (dob 1874) and had the maiden name of "Aguallo." A dear uncle of mine (now departed) would tell me stories about her maiden name and how it was linked to a small town (Nochistlan).

During the COVID shutdown I followed the "aguallo" line back to the mid 1750's in Ciudad Guzman (Zapotlan Grande).  I found records (baptisms, marriage and death) on Family Search belonging to the "aguallo" line.  The oldest direct relative I found in Ciudad Guzman was Jose Vizente Ferrer de Aguayo (married in 1779), originally from Nochistlan, per his IM (a kind soul/wikitree moderator found the unindexed IM).  Unfortunately, I hit a wall at the time and could not find any additional documents for Jose Vizente Ferrer (ie a baptism record).  His marriage registry and IM identify one Antonio Mergil/Margil de Aguayo as his

Lázaro Martín del Campo - New Information

As many of us have come to realize, the traditional genealogy connecting Lázaro Martín del Campo to Revilla del Campo is likely incorrect.

Emerging evidence suggests that Bartolomé Martín del Campo and Lázaro Martín del Campo are two distinct individuals with no proven relation. While it was previously claimed that Lázaro was the same Bartolomé baptized in Revilla del Campo in 1605, the chronology is inconsistent.

As Alfonso Martín del Campo Loza noted in his book "Memoria Documental y Gráfica de mi Apellido Martin del Campo", Lázaro was already established in Teocaltiche by 1618 and was a widower of Isabel Sánchez de Lara by 1623. A child baptized in 1605 could not have been a widower in 1623 with an established presence in Nueva Galicia by 1618.

Recent findings point toward Herencia as the true origin:

1) 1608 Record: I previously shared a 1608 record from Herencia showing a Lázaro Martín del Campo and his wife, María Díaz, acting as godparents: https://www.familysearch.org/ark

Hello Daniel

Our family is descended from the brother of your ancestor, Pablo Florentino Rodríguez: José Ylario Rodríguez, who married Guadalupe Carrasco.

I didn't realize they are part of the Rodriguez de Frias family.

Since your last post on the subject, have you been able to find the parents of Santiago Rodríguez and María Cristina Macías-Balades?

Santiago Rodrígues b. bef 1731 m. bef 1747 María Cristina Macías-Balades b. bef 1733.

  1. Joseph Ylario Rodrígues (1748-1801) m. 1781 Guadalupe Carrasco
  2. Pablo Florentino Rodrígues b. 1750
  3. Joseph Vicente Rodrígues b. abt. 1755 m. 1781 María Ysabel Gonzáles
  4. José María Rodrígues b. abt 1757
  5. José Victor Rodrígues b. abt 1764
  6. Ygnacio Rodrígues b. abt 1766 m. 1793 Paula Fraustra
  7. Pedro Rodrígues b. bef 1768 d. 1786

I believe María Rodríguez of Calvillo, who married Pedro Ortiz circa 1750s, may be related to the family.

Thanks!

Hello Daniel,

We share a connection through José Santiago Rodríguez (????-1769) and his wife, María Cristina Macías-Valadés of San Nicolás and of Barranca, both located in Calvillo, Aguascalientes.

I recently found the nonindexed burial record for José Santiago Rodríguez at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6SJ9-JKC

In it, his place of birth is given as Zacatecas and parents are named Juan Rodrígues and María Josepha de la Cruz.

So far I've been unable to find more - despite considerable effort to expand upon this new information - but it's a start.

I don’t have them as children of Francisco Gonzalez Martinez cc Magdalena de Lavezares, but if either of them is, it’d be Magdalena Gonzalez cc Nicolas Sandoval, because from the kinship given in the dispensa of Lorenzo Mexia cc Magdalena Santillan, Magdalena de Lavezares cc Geronimo Sandoval was their granddaughter. The dispensa has the betrothed at 4o con 4o (and 4o con 3o in another line), but doesn’t explain the relationship, but from other records, the probable kinship is this:

Bernardino de Isla-1- ? ? ? ?
Juan de Isla-2-Magdalena Lavezares (cc Geronimo Sandoval)
Mariana de Isla-3-Cristobal Sandoval
Lorenzo Mexia-4-Magdalena Santillan

Using the process of elimination, Magdalena’s parents would have to be either Ynes Gonzalez cc Juan Gonz Hidalgo, or Andrea Lavezares cc Juan de la Cruz Martin Bermejo (Diego Gonzalez had a daughter named Magdalena, but she married Antonio Tovar Legazpi, and Juana Gonzalez cc Marcos Gonzalez had no children).

Dispensa, Lorenzo Mexia cc Magdalena Santillan

In the book Genealogia de Nochistlan… by Jose Luis… it has both Magdalena de la Besares (Jeronimo de Sandoval) and Magdalena Gonzalez (Nicolas de Sandoval) as children of Francisco Gonzalez Martinez and Magdalena de la Besares. I may have missed where in the book it references it, but where is the information that links them as children and not grandchildren of them?

I’ve found another Tierras y Aguas folder that’s filled with easter eggs, this one with families from early Lagos de Moreno: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-63GW-X?view=explo…

Dated 28 Sep 1674, it’s regarding a dispute between Juana Tavera (widow of Jacinto de Lariz) and Capitan Andres Ramirez de Cueva. To establish their claims, the two had to present land titles and other documentation, so we’re treated to the history of the lands in question, and to the names of all of the people who owned them since the arrival of the Spaniards. There are documents dating back to the founding of Lagos de Moreno - including a copy of the original charter given to Hernando Martel, dated 15 Jan 1563 (image 509). There are also titles that passed through cabildos in 1568 & 1569, which included Lorenzo Alvarez, Luis Lopez, Alonso Macias, Juan Becerra, Toribio Hernandez, and other early notables. Following are some relationships revealed throughout these documents - of interest to

Hello again, Manny!

I was adjusting Diego Ysquierdo's birthdate (I guessed him "about 1621" which I know now to be impossible), and decided to check Ana's household in the 1669 Padron of Lagos because I remember seeing a Sanchez noted as living with her.

After staring at the page for about a minute, I realized thanks to your new information, that almost the entire page deals with Ana's extended family group and the people living on their properties. A real eye opener!

Pedro Ortiz de Anda

Reading back through the archives I found a post that states Mr Jaime Holcomb believed Pedro Ortiz de Anda (born c1560) was the natural son of Pedro de Anda Altamirano (c1535-1619).

He also believed Isabel Ortiz de Anda (cc Pedro Gómez de Portugal), Pedro Ortiz de Anda (cc Ana Ramírez) and Catalina Ortiz de Anda (cc Esteban de Pastrano) were all also natural children (born outside of marriage) of the above Pedro Ortiz de Anda.

Has there been any research on this family recently that validates or disproves Mr Holcomb's views?

Thank you.

You might already have this one: dated 19 Jul 1565 in Villa de los Lagos, it’s regarding a land grant made by Hernan Martel to Pedro de Anda, his wife, Beatriz de Castañeda, and her sister, Margarita Gomez. Also mentioned is Juan de Zorita, who I believe was Beatriz de Castañeda’s brother (?): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDL-D9XR-T?i=135&cat=…

It starts on Image 134, with their son, Esteban de Anda y Castañeda, selling one of the sitios to Alonso de Torres, on 2 May 1605.

Though some of my lines intermarried with the Anda’s, I don’t descend from them, so I haven’t researched them much. But, Pedro de Anda (born ca 1563, so I assume he was the younger) was one of the founders of San Luis Potosi, and he and his brother, Esteban de Anda (ca 1577), appear a lot in the SLP notary archives during those first decades, so I’d suggest you direct some of your attention to those archives. Here is a document dated 9 Jan 1606, in which brothers Pedro de Anda and Esteban de Anda start a company involving an estancia de ganado mayor, located in Valle de San Francisco, jurisdiction of SLP.  On the 2nd page, last paragraph, three daughters of Pedro de Anda are named: Catalina, Petrona, and Juana.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58X-S3TP?i=107&wc=MXB…

Daughter Catalina was married to Esteban Pastrana; on 31 Jan 1619, Esteban Pastrana, “Como marido y conjunto que soy de Catalina Ortis de Anda, hija natural de Pedro de Anda mi suegro,” granted power of attorney to Tomas del Rio: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSC6-3V7Y?i=368&cat=37…

I have Pedro de Anda and Esteban de Anda as half-brothers, Pedro being hijo natural of Pedro de Anda and a woman supposedly named Maria Ortiz, and Esteban, legitimate son of Pedro de Anda and Beatriz Gonzalez de Castañeda  - though I don’t have this sourced.

Hello Manny,

That is spectacular.

Thank you for sharing. I was also told by word-of-mouth, that Pedro Ortiz de Anda was born from his father's first marriage with María Ortiz. None of it is sourced.

Until today, I only found one document supporting the belief Pedro Ortiz de Anda was son of Pedro de Anda Altamirano (and half brother of Esteban de Anda). Your discovery is stronger evidence and makes mine redundant, but I'd like to share:

"En veintisiete de marzo [de 1619 años] bauticé a Joseph, hijo de Hernando Medel y de Juana Burgueño, su mujer. Fueron sus padrinos Esteban de Anda y su sobrina Ana Ramirez." (27 Mar 1619 Baptism of José Medel: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-KW84-K)

Padrinos above are "Esteban de Anda and his niece Ana Ramírez" .. Ana Ramírez wasn't an actual niece of Esteban de Anda (as far as I know), she was wife of his nephew, Pedro Ortiz de Anda (son of his half-brother, Pedro Ortiz de Anda).

Thank you, again, Manny!

Manny, this is a great find which corroborates the information in the post by Guillermo don Teresa Tovar regarding the 'testamento' of Esteban de Pastrana: "Tengo localizado el testamento de Esteban de Pastrana, vecino de Guadalajara, casado con Catalina Ortíz, y deja como a herederos a sus hijos: Pedro y Juana de Anda, Luisa y María Ortíz. Dice en dicho testamento, fechado en Guadalajara en 10 de junio de 1635, que tiene tratado con Esteban de Anda, tío de su mujer, el pleito por la herencia sobre del capitán Pedro de Anda, padre de su esposa, por ser hermano del dicho Esteban."

Other sons of Esteban de Pastrana and Catalina Ortiz de Anda are: Esteban, baptized on 24 June 1622, and Luis, baptized 28 June 1635, both were baptized in Guadalajara.

The other daughters, Petrona and Juana, named in the document of the 'compañía' between brothers Pedro and Esteban, are new to me. Hopefully, research on these sisters will yield some new insight on Pedro de Anda.

I have Isabel Ortiz as daughter

Hello Carlos

I believe that the line that I have descending from Gonzalo Pantoja is the correct one. It is through Gonzalo's maternal grandmother that we have Ulloa I believe that I have discovered why Garmandi Leal mixed up his line with the one that descends from the duque de Alba. There are three other connections which make Gonzalo Pantojas descendents Cousins, 2nd and 3rd cousins to to the Alvarez de Toledo family. He must have come across documents stating that they were closely related and went to the one relationship that does not I belong as our direct ancestors.

Thanks again for your work in trying to figure out this mess. I have more on Gonzalo Pantoja's ancestors and the details as to how they are closely related to the Alvarez de Toledo family but will hold off on providing this info since we need to focus on making a solid connection with each link from Catalina Pantoja to Gonzalo Pantoja.

More research is needed to verify Juan Pantojas parents. We do not know if he is the same Juan that lists Pedro as his father.

There were many Juan, Pedro, and Gonzalo Pantojas in Mexico during the 16th century.

I found a Captain Juan Pantoja and Lord of Ixtlahuaca that accompanied Narvaez on his 1st expedition to Mexico. This Captain Juan Pantoja may be the same Captain that was killed by Vasco Porcalles' brother, surnamed Sotomayor, during another expedition.

Another Juan Pantoja went to Honduras and stayed there.

There is another named Juan de la Cueva Pantoja

There is a Gonzalo Pantoja that is the father of Jeronimo Pantoja Zuniga (aka Geronimo Zuniga)

There is a Pedro Pantoja that married into the Ovando family

I have been able to confirm the connection between the Ulloa family and the Pantoja family. I have found wills that show their correct lines. . Many experienced genealogists have posted articles with clear mistakes in their lineage Diego Merlo was an uncle and not an ancestor. Diego is the son of Juan Merlo el bravo. Some genealogists have erroneously stated that this Juan is the son. Constanza is the wife of Diego and not Juan. Again some make the mistake of making constanza the wife of Juan. Constanza was known under different last names but they aren't mistakes and she is the same person as she sometimes used her maternal grandmothers last name and sometimes she used her fathers surname. Diego did have two sons named Juan with one named after his paternal grandfather and another surnamed after a maternal grandfather which added to the confusion but Diego leaves a will that that clearly indicates who the different Juan's are. Comment

I think the Merlo-Ulloa family is interesting but not related to our Bernardina Hurtado de Mendoza Ulloa Pantoja who married our Gonzalo Núñez de Sotomayor, the reasons are :

The Merlo Ulloa relationship with the Pantojas of Mocejón starts around 1510 when Gonzalo Pantoja Portocarrero marries Juana de Merlo Ulloa y Toledo.....

At this same time Juan Pantoja Rodríguez the conqueror of Colima was marriying his first wife NN, with whom he had a son by the name of Pedro Pantoja born in Spain around 1520 who inherited la encomienda de la Huacana from his father on 1565.

It´s clear that this line of Pantojas is not related then to the Merlo-Ulloa line

Now the line of our Bernardina comes from the same Juan Pantoja Rodríguez or another one by the same name who lived around the same time and therefore was not the son of Gonzalo Pantoja and Juana Merlo.

This Juan Pantoja was born well before 1510 when Gonzalo Pantoja married Juana Merlo, because he marries María de la Peña around 1515-1520

Comment

If the the timeline that you are you are using is correct then I agree with your reasoning. However, I disagree with your dates on Gonzalo Pantoja And Juana Merlo Ulloa. I believe that Gonzalo Pantoja and Juana Merlo Ulloa married at least two decades earlier, most likely twenty-five to thirty years earlier than you are proposing. The dates showing juana as marrying at a later date are supposing that she descended from the toledo which is in fact an error that genealogists made many years later when they were fighting for an inheritance in court. Her stepmother was a Toledo not her. Even some court documents wrongly refer to he rdescending from the Toledo in the inheritance fight. Her father, brother and herself are clearly from an earlier age than the false lines state. Her maternal grandfather and uncle left wills that show that they were from an earlier age. they had many connections with the royal court which is why they kept these wills.
Juana Merlo Ulloa had half siblings

I believe that you are correct in your analysis of the date ranges for all the people you addressed in this post except for Juana Merlo Ulloa and her husband

Even though I calculated a birthdate for her of 1460, this date is closer to the latest that she was born. An strong argument can be made that her birth date is in the 1450's.. This would make her closer to 60 in 1510. This age calculation allows for at the very least one added generation, maybe even two. The calculations are based on known data regarding Juana's mother, Giuomar Ulloa, when Giuomars stepmother conceived her children and when she passed away.

Hello Carlos,
There were at least three Juanas . Our gonzalo Pantojas wife, has a maternal aunt Juana. The aunt was born after her sister Guiomar. Their father remarried soon after this first Juana was born and had more children with his second wife. The dates of the second marriage and children help date these people which is why I gave you a birthdate on our second Juana in 1450s.
I believe your analysis helps confirm that The birthdate that I gave you for this second Juana Merlo is 1450s not 1460. if her father dies like you say in 1454. Let's give her a birth date of 1450 So if Gonzalo is given a birth date approximating hers then I believe that it makes room for another generation where pedro is not his brother but their son. This would explain the Ulloa in the family line.
The third juana Merlo that you mention is most likely the cause for the confusion of the birth date on the second Juana Merlo, who was married to Gonzalo. Did Gonzalo marry two Juana Merlos ?

Hello Carlos
I took a look at one of the sources that you provided. The book confirms much of what I stated regarding the errors in some court documents. The book states, just like I did, that there is a clear error, they said "tiene un error evidente" and they go on to explain what I had explained in a previous post. The mistakes that were made were used by many genealogists to come up with the false genealogies and caused much confusion regarding the birth dates of the involved individuals. These mistakes are so prevalent that I began to think that maybe I was wrong and that I should go and start over all again with this branch since so many people follow these different lines. Now that you found a source that confirms my claims, I will not start all over again. Juan Merlo is the father of Guiomar Ulloa and Diego Merlo. They also have a sister named juana and multiple half siblings. This book also confirms what I said about diego and Constanza Carillo having two sons named

Hello Carlos

Contributing to the mixed up lines that everyone has is the following information:

Juan Merlo el Bravo and Guiomar Ulloa Yanez (born about 1430)
Daughter
Juana Merlo Ulloa (born about 1450 and Gonzalo Pantoja Portocarrero

Juan Merlo also marries Isabel Alvarez de Toledo

Juan Merlo who is el bravo and Guiomar Ulloa Yanez are also the parents of

Diego Merlo Ulloa and he is married to Constanza Carillo and they are the parents of two Juan's:

Juan Merlo and Juan Carillo ( full brothers)

One of these Juan's is the father of

Diego Merlo who is married to another Isabel Alvarez Toledo

Who it seems have two daughters ,

One named Juana Merlo and another named Isabel Alvarez Toledo (named after her mother)

So we have three Juana's in the family, one Juana Ulloa and two Juana Merlos

And three isabel Alvarez de Toledo

And numerous Juan Merlos, including the set of brothers named Juan but with different surnames.

And at least two Diego Merlos

At least two Gonzalo

Hello Carlos

You wrote:
The Merlo Ulloa relationship with the Pantojas of Mocejón starts around 1510 when Gonzalo Pantoja Portocarrero marries Juana de Merlo Ulloa y Toledo.....

But Juana Merlo Ulloa and Juana Merlo Toledo are different people. The first Juana was Gonzalo Pantojas wife and a great aunt to Juana Merlo Toledo. If Gonzalo did marry a second Juana Merlo, it was most likely this great niece and that would explain the confusion and conflicting timelines. This may also explain the conflicting information regarding Juana Merlos parents.

The marriage to a Juana Merlo toledo could have occurred in 1514 just like you claim.

Our line of descent that you and I both share comes from Juana Merlo Ulloa.

If Gonzalo did remarry in 1514 then all documents after this must have contributed to the mistakes in the family tree as this second Juana Merlo (Juana Merlo Toledo) did descend from diego Merlo Ulloa (he was her grandfather and brother to Juana Merlo Ulloa)

Hello and thank you Carlos,

I continued researching using the resources you provided. The sources you provide confirm that Guiomar Ulloa was the third and last wife of Juan merlo, confirming my earlier research that she survived him. My earlier research identified her as a widow and favorite of the Queen. I became unsure of this info because the court document that erroneously implied that the second wife was the last wife. She had to be the last wife if she is the same Guiomar Ulloa that is the queens favorite.

I believe that the resources that you provided support the Pantoja Merlo family tree that I have presented in these posts.

One of the books is down the street from me at UCLA.

Thanks again,

There is conflicting information as to the name of Martim Alfonso de Merlos wife, the parents of Juan Merlo el Bravo. One of the sources that Carlos provided claims her name is Leonor Acuña and a couple of pages later claims that it is teresa Acuña. Leonor and Teresa Acuña are sisters. Leonor is identified as being married twice having to two other men in another other source.

Further research identifies Leonor as a very busy bride. It seems that she had multiple marriages, her husbands kept dying. According to Luis de Salazar y Castro, Leonor is the sister that was a wife of Martim Alfonso de Merlo, Sr de Valdenebro

Juan Merlo el bravo had a sister, Catalina de Merlo, that married into another very prominent family that had many business ties with the Spanish King, just like juan Merlo's father in law. All of their lives revolved around the King and or Queen.

Many Gonzalo Pantojas identified themselves as Gonzalo Pantoja Portocerrero. The first or earliest one was

The last testament and will of Diego Merlo and other primary sources support the conclusions of my research on this family. The problem is that many genealogists in the 1600s and 1700s had already mixed up the members of this family and wrote incorrect genealogies in their books.

Juana Merlo is the daughter of Juan Merlo "el Bravo" and Guiomar Ulloa Yanez. She is not the same Juana Merlo that is the daughter of the Juan Merlo Toledo, son of Diego Merlo, Guiomars brother. This second Juan Merlo is married to an Alvarez Toledo, the same surname of his mother which adds to the confusion.

Juan Merlo El Bravo is one of the only, maybe the only foreign knight, acknowledged to win in tournaments in Germany during this time. Juan went to Germany and challenged the Germans stating he was the best. Then he proved it when they took him up on the challenge.

Hello Carlos

Great work finding juan Pantoja son of Pedro Pantoja and Catalina Rodriguez. I believe that we are on the right track and will solve this puzzle soon. We have made great progress in these few days. Fortunately, I found a couple of sources that should help us solve, or at least add a couple more pieces to this puzzle. Unfortunately, I won't be able to travel and get these books until after the school year ends in June so we have at least a month until I open up and see these prizes. I was able to see a line from one of these books and I can already tell you that this book will reveal some information. The bad news is that I can only see the second half of the sentence so I don't know all the info. Luckily I can tell from the second half of the sentence that it will provide us with some valuable information.

Many good genealogists have stumbled with the Merlo (Melo) /Suarez-Alvarez Toledo Ulloa line associated withe the Pantoja family. They screwed up because there are

Dear Mr. Ricci and other Members,

As far as whether Dr. Juan de la Cueva y Mendoza may have been an ancestor to Bernardina de Mendoza I simply don't know. I know from her from this thread.

The thread that mentions Dr. Juan de la Cueva-Mendoza y González is one I started on 28 Feb 2014 and I called it "Origen de Beltrán de la Cueva: Re-encontré la conexión a España!" Unfortunately I have only limited info on Dr. Juan de la Cueva-Mendoza y González, and what I have I found in Gabriel Agraz García de Alba's article "Origen y Desenvolvimiento de la Familia de la Cueva en Tecolotlán" published in Memorias de la Academia Mexicana de Genealogía y Heráldica, México DF, 1952, p. 56.

I quote Mr. Agraz here:
"Décimosegundo nieto, Doctor Juan de la Cueva Mendoza y González, natural de la ciudad de Úbeda, donde fué regidor y Dña. Inés de Castro, de la antigua y noble familia de los 'Fernández de Castro.'"

In English this says that Juan de la Cueva Mendoza y González was from the city of Ubeda

Comment

I forgot to mention who Dr. Juan de la Cueva's parents were.

Per Mr. Gabriel Agraz Garcia de Alba's work, Dr. Juan de la Cueva was the son of Diego de la Cueva y Mendoza and of Maria Gonzalez. Diego was son of Ruy Perez de la Cueva and of Sancha de Mendoza. This is where the Mendoza name comes in.

As you can see in the post of 28 Feb there was some debate as to how Ruy came into the picture. But Sancha de Mendoza was of the Hurtado de Mendoza line. Ruy and Sancha probably lived during the 1400s, probably the earlier half of the century.

This is from "Origen y Desenvolvimiento de la Familia de la Cueva en Tecolotlán" published in Memorias de la Academia Mexicana de Genealogía y Heráldica, México DF, 1952, p. 56.

Great work Sergio,

Ruy Perez de la Cueva is the son of Gil Martinez de la Cueva and Blanca Fernandez de la Cueva. Ruys parents are second cousins. These two parents have been mistaken for uncle and niece instead of second cousins.
Many genealogists present a different family tree then the one that I am presenting here. The reason for the different lines is that there are three Diego Fernandez de la Cueva, all closely related. I will present the three with roman numerals I, II, & III to keep them straight. What makes this line even more confusing is that there are two Gil Martinez de la Cueva. They have two different titles which differentiates them. One Gil is Blanca's father and the other Gil is her husband. There are also two wives surnamed Alfonso de Mercado.

On Wikipedia they have Beltran de la Cueva as the son of one of Diego Fernandez de la Cueva III primer Visconde de Huelma and the wife of Juan Fernandez de la Cueva, Maria Alfonso de Mercado, so one of us is wrong. I don

Hola Carlos,

Guiomar is the third and last wife of Juan Merlo, most genealogies posted on the internet do not list her as Juana's mother.

The family knows that they are connected to the Toledos so they assume that the second is the mother of Juana. but in court documents that dealt with a dispute over property inheritances there is a mistake made and Genealogist read this mistake and ran with it. The court documents make what At least one other mistake where they list Juan's two wives as sisters. documents show that Diego Merlo And juana are Guiomars biological children. Hello rmcneal,

We are currently discussing this line in the following node : http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/node/19810

And as you will see there´s a lot of "information" on the net that is at best misleading.

The "information" that you found in that Proyecto of the UNAM is unsustainable because

Carlos, thanks again after reading your response I started looking for more information and I found a little more in some snippets I was able to pull from, "Fundadores de Nueva Galicia": Guadalajara - Volume 1 - Page 43 and 64. The snippets didn't give me the parents of Benardina Mendoza but it does say, if I am reading it correctly that Martín Pantoja and Ines Mendoza had a son Juan married to Maria de la Pena (on the same page which I can't see all of it mentions Catalina Mendoza. I am hoping somewhere on that page it lists her parents). The closest library to me with this volume is 175 miles away but I will try to get there with in the next couple of weeks to research further and maybe find some source to back up what I am able to find in the book.

We know so far that our Bernardina was the

Comment

Hello Carlos,

I agree with you that Garmendia Leal is wrong. Bernardina Mendoza may not descend from the dukes of Alba but she is their cousin. I have found proof that Gonzalo's great great grandmother is also the ancestor to the dukes of Alba. I have also found another link to the mendoza family.
The next step though is to see where Garmendia Leal got all of his information and to try to get it right.
We have evidence that she descends from the Pantoja line, and the Ulloa link has been found, so now we need to solidify the connections and study the alfonso Cuevas mendoza line. The connection that I made with the Merlo family makes this family high nobility, true aristocrats, not just nobility. It would be nice to get in contact with Luz Montejano and show her what we have found so far.
Keep up the excellent work.
