Suerte!

Hello Aurora,

I find much better information in the marriage information records or in the matrimonial records. I found one record of one of Miguel Olivares' children.

It is of his daugher Martina Olivares

Marriage: 19 Mar 1832, Asientos Aquascalientas, Mexico

Groom: Dioncido Salazar

Brides father: Miguel Olivares

Brides mother: Maria Antonia Flores

Film # 1156093

If you look to see if there are marriage information records in that year 1832 and place, then scroll back and forth to the date of March 19th, you will find this record. Sometimes the marriage information records are 4 pages long and list grandparents as well.

Thank you Nancy,
I had already looked at the marriage document of Martina Olivares and Dionicio Salazar dated Mar. 19, 1832. It did not contain the names of Martina's grandparents.I looked up the Information Matrimonial as you suggested. I found some info on the Film from Asientos Aguascalientes for the year 1931 . The info starts on Image 308. I have gone thru it a few times and don't seem to find the grandparents. The handwriting is VERY difficult to read, I may be missing it.
Again Thank you for your help

Your record reads as follows with spelling modernized:

At first I thought that this couple, Nicolas and Maria San Juan, were the parents of Joseph Cayetano Garcia (as he is listed in his marriage to Anna Cleta Calzada, who is described as an espanol "originario de Aguascalientes Villa"), but I have since found what I think is Cayetano's baptism, which is a Pedro Cayetano Garcia Belasco who was baptized in the capital city of Aguascalientes on May 11, 1738. This one's parents are listed as Nicolas Garcia and Maria de Snjuan Belasco. In another record, she was described as Maria de San Juan Villalpando. The couple in the record you translated below seem to both be Indians, and as you know, Tony's folks claimed they had no Indian blood. What do you think? Which couple is more likely to be Tony's ancestors?

What you said is very common, the mixture of blood and races was something that was inevitable in the Mexican families. As many others, I do have the same situation in my family, I had a greatgrandfather that was blue eyes and had light hair when he was a child but I discovered that by his mother's side he had some black blood, also his mother had the same color of eyes and white skin but she did have some brothers that were brown skin. By the oher side, there is some part of my family that are not blond but studying their ancestry I could realize that they descended only from Spanish, because there were also Spaniards that came here and didn´t have light hair or eyes because of their Arab blood.

About your question about Juan de la O, in my experience I've found that in some cases the indians and also the Spanish changed their surname that corresponded to them, sometimes because of the surname importance or other times because of a personal situation.

Surprising surname changes with ancestors?

Hi, I would like to share a quite funny, or surprising, discovery I have just made.

It was very common and normal for children to take on their mother's surname instead of their father's.

The current naming system in the Spanish speaking world did not come about until the Bourbon reforms.

Because use of maternal and paternal surnames were both very common, the convention was a bit of a compromise combining the use of both surnames.

As Linda mentions, it was often the custom that the oldest daughter was named after the maternal grandmother, including her surname so she would have a surname different from either of her parents.

Comment

this is one of the mysteries of genealogy that keeps us shaking our heads and
wondering if we have the correct lineage sometimes.. It's especially interesting
when they use a grandmothers name who you have not identified yet and the
grandmother used her grandmothers surname.. and yet we stay with it until we
unravel the mysteries.. the ancestors must have a good chuckle at us sometimes..

Hi, I would like to share a quite funny, or surprising, discovery I have just
made. On the marriage act of my third great-great grandfathers José Gerardo
Tapia and María Josefa Gímenez on July 15, 1815; there was quite a tornado of
changes in their surnames.

José Gerardo Tapia, a mulato from Aguacaliente, Cocula; was the legitimate son

Comment

yes .... these surname changes were very common - there were no hard set
rules with surnames until more recent times, especially with the non
Europeans ... just be thankful that you seem to be able to make the
connections - it isn't always obvious.

@Angelina, I am really thankful, I believed God helped me because this would have been a hard research if I didn't take a look at this marriage. This marriage was indexed with a different source film number, so I had a harder time looking for it in another batch. Thank you for your comment :)

@Longsjourney, that is true and I agree with you about ancestors chuckling at the researches. Thank you for your comment :)

Gerardo's sister was Ynes Rodríguez Tapia and she did have the correct surname. It could of been that Gerardo was mad at his father or something like that. May they rest in peace.

Welcome to the group. A couple of questions to help you on your quest:

- Have you obtained a copy of your father's social security application? If he is deceased you should be able to obtain it and it should list his birthplace and birthdate as well as his parents' information.
- What was your grandmother's maiden name? Women in the Spanish speaking world do not change their surnames upon marriage so any records of hers in Mexico will bear her maiden name.

Arturo,
Thank you so much for the help. Unfortunately, although my father had a SS Card, the information about his birth (he thought in Cal.) was given by his mother, but it was obviously untrue as he couldn't find it in Sacramento. Also, I really believe her maiden name was Guerrero based on the family photo and that is the proof I'm searching for.
I do hope the Gilbert Blanco in Chicago is my long lost uncle. I will research that.

Juan Antonio de Aldana y María de Pedrosa

Hola Enrique:

¿Me das esos datos?

Hola Armando:

I found this in the book that I mentioned . The reason I think this may be of interest is that back in the day our ancestors travelled what was called LA RUTA DE PLATA from the tri states up north to the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and eventually to the state of Taumalipas .

Hi Valente:

I also descend from the Barbosa family of Cocula. I don't know if all Barbosa of Cocula were relatives but my farthest ancestors I've found is Clemente Barbosa, married with Brígida Núñez, they might have married before May 1743, when the oldest child that I've found from them was baptized in Cocula. I searched in a good range of years before that date, the information of their marriage, but I couldn't find it. I have the custom of writing down possible relatives with the same family name registered in the same church but I don't have your ancestors' names in my notes but continue searching, maybe I missed that couple marriage or possibly they were married after the date I began my search that was May 1743.

Hello Salvador, the farthest I've gotten with my Barbosa ancestors are Antonio Barbosa and Teresa de Ruelas. They probably married prior to 1734, before having my ancestor Santiago Barbosa on July 1735. There could be a possible connection within these two lineages, I will be checking on that.

Término "con voz de español" y "mulato"

Buenas tardes:

No he encontrado gente como "negro" todavia.

nombre poco común y me puse a buscarla.

http://gw5.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=sanchiz&p=ildefonso&n=martin+del+c…

Mendez in Tamazula and Michoacan

Hi Linda,

I have noticed all the Mendez from Tamazula, Ciudad Guzman and surrounding areas come from the Mendez
de Torres in Zamora, Michoacan. Some years ago I learned south eastern Jalisco was part of the Obispado
de Michoacan. As for this family I do remember seeing them in the records put did not jot them down,
I was after our direct line, which I successfully did with the help of a cousin in Mexico City, yourself, Mariano Gonzalez-Leal
and scrolling through lots of mircrofilm. There were two Mendez families in Michoacan, Mendez de Torres
and Mendez de Guzman. For the most part sites like Valle de Santiago, Leon, Guanajuato, Peruandiro,
Zamora, Tlazazalca, Jacona, Morelia were heavy populated with Mendez de Torres. I plan to finish extracting
the spanish from Tlazazalca and Zamora soon. The project was from the 1600s to the independence.

I remember when I visited my grandfather Martin in Mexico he had told us that the Mendez came over the
Sierra from Zamora, Michoacan and that

Wonderful. I think if everyone took one of the films and did something
similar it would be a great help to many fellow researchers. You could
make it a one year project. Just take your time and a year from now turn
in your notes on what names are on what films for the Guadalajara

Thanks Claudia for doing this. You set a fine example.

Estimado Alejandro,

Es muy interesante los datos que aportas. No sabemos mucho

Hello Researchers,

There is a book about New World diseases titled "Born to Die - Disease and
New World Conquest, 1492-1650" by Noble David Cook. The book describes the
diseases the Spanish brought in great detail. The diseases were horrible in
how they affected the natives who had no immunities. There seemed to be
variations of smallpox, some strains worse than others. When I read that
book, I feel that it is a wonder I have any ancestors at all, because the
diseases struck constantly.

Nancy,

I think the camaras de sangre, which is dysentery, refers to blood in the
stools. You are right that catarrh was used to describe whooping cough as well
as influenza. Dolor de costado has to do with pain under the rib cage
(costilla), which could have been pneumonia or another illness, but it probably
was not appendicitis. Researchers are still trying to make sense out of the
descriptions for illnesses which fell under pestilence or peste. Diseases were
most rampant in the coastal areas that were warm and humid, such as Veracruz, as
well as in dense settlements. And to think we sit around worrying about tooth
decay!

That is interesting what you said about "pestilence" perhaps referimng to highly contagious diseases. I have a death certificate for a relative who died in the early 20th century in El Paso, Texas, and the place where they died is noted as "the pest house". The cause of death was smallpox.

Juan Maria Osegueda ( Mulato )

If you are talking about the Spanish characters being replaced by ? then it
might be a setting in the email program that needs to be changed. I couldn't

The problem some of us (mostly mac users) are seeing with ? in emails instead of accents and other marks is that UTF-8 (or UTF-16) text encoding is not selected by an email sender using an older Windows version, for which the default encoding is ISO 8859-1, an older text encoding scheme which is not fully compatible with other systems.

For maximum compatibility and fewer such issues, set your email (and website) text encoding to UTF-8, which will make things easier and more compatible for all of us. [In Mac OS X Mail, the last item under the Message menu lets you set text encoding: pick Unicode (UTF-8).]

So, for users who encounter messages in which ? appears instead of accents (á, é, í, ó, ú, Ā, É, Í, Ó, Ú) and other typographical marks (ç, ñ, ü, Ç, Ñ, Ü, ¡, ¿ ), I suggest copying the message from the Nuestros Ranchos website and pasting it onto your system. All the special characters should work fine. You can use the list above as a test case.

Hello Bert,

I am not a Mac user but the Spanish characters would not show up correctly
in my email from Nuestros Ranchos even though they would show up correctly
in all my emails in Spanish to my friends and relatives, I had brought this
to the attention of Joseph Puentes. He had said the same thing, that all I
had to do was change the email to UTF-8, but that didn't solve anything for
me. As soon as I switched my account over to my gmail account the problem
was solved. If the solution is switching to UTF-8 why didn't the emal from
Nuestros Ranchos get corrected when I set the encoding to UTF-8? I still
have one of them and I tried it again and it still didn't correct. If it's
because of the person that sent it why do I never have the problem anymore
with gmail?
Opening a new account with gmail or maybe live.com (hotmail) is a very easy
step as is changing the email account. I have my gmail forwarded to my Yahoo
account so I don't have to use two accounts unless I want to reply in

There's one point I failed to make in my previous post. It is the sender of the message who needs to set text encoding to UTF-8 as well as the recipient. Once the message gets reencoded (with the ?s) as part of the aggregated post and sent via email, it's too late to change it. If the person assembling the combined message notices that it contains ? wherever Spanish accent and typographical marks should be, then he or she can try to change the message's text encoding at that point, which may work some of the time.

Why is it that I never get garbled messages with gmail ? I don't change
anything and neither do the senders and I never have problems with it. We
can't expect all of the senders to change their encoding to UTF-8 even if
Joseph were to send all of the members an email asking them to change the
encoding.

Thank's for the added information. That explains why I'm still getting some emails with ? in them.

Though I'm 69, it looks like it will be easier for me to take Spanish language classes than to put up with ?'s and comical online translators.

I copied your email from the Ranchos website and emailed it to me. Everything came out alright using UTF-8. So, everything works when I send an email from me to me. Now I'll wait and see if a new email from Nuestros Ranchos or someone else will appear correctly, too.

Thank you for all your help. I hope you have solved this vexing problem for me and other's, too.

Thank you so much, Patty. The letters came through fine. I'm so pleased. I appreciate the help you and Armando have given me. I changed my email message text encoding as Armando suggested, then changed the text encoding in Safari under View to UTF-8. I now received your email with the test and it came through without question marks. Hooray! It seems the text coding must be changed in both the web browser and the email program.

Thank you both and everyone else who worked on this problem.
