Thank you so much for brining this to light at least to the group. I had heard of the book but never found it worth purchasing or studying. I could have not guessed what was contained in the book. The Anda Altamirano family and some important facts are in there.

We’ll have to study it a bit further and now you have sparked something in me to continue searching this line. Where did you find reference to Isabel Gutiérrez Altamirano married to Pedro de Anda? Couple years ago I had found something about a Isabel Altamirano Castilla married to a Pedro de Anda but could not figure out if it was the same Pedro de Anda. I was also rejected for proposing such a “theory.” I have searched my records and cannot find that record I had found years ago, eventually I had thought of “saving and storing it away for later use” but now I can’t find it.

I have tried connecting the Anda Altamirano to that of Hernando Gutiérrez Altamirano and Francisca Osorio de Castilla. You mentioning this

Hi Robert:

Your e-mail to Ed caught my eye because my mother was "Cerros" from
Minillas de Jerez, Zacatecas. I have contacted the officials in Jerez and
was told that there is no such place named Minillas de Jerez, that there
were a few places called Minillas, but were abandoned as the minerals in the
area were mined out.

Her father, Preciliano Cerros was married to Apolonia Gonzalez, probably in
the early 1900's, since my mother was born in 1906. He was born in Panuco
Zacatecas, where the Cerros held mining interests. I believe they came from
a place called "Lanestosa" in Northern Spain, just sout-east of Santander.
My Grandfather Preciliano worked in the mines and could have been a native
Zacatecan and taken the "Cerros" name from the mine owners. I have only
been able to trace his ancestry back 3 generations.

I had my MtDNA analyzed and it came back as "A2 Native American" I found
two other people who matched my mother's DNA in Coalcoman, Michoacan, they

As for Minnillas. I understand there are many and wide spreaded. But I do recall crosssing that name Cerros.
But not at Jerez. Is this possible that your mother was from Minillas ARROYO DEL CARRIZO,  Zacatecas instead?

I looked at a map of the Zacatecas/Guadalupe/Trancoso area. Guadalupe is very close to the city of Zacatecas. There are records of several parishes in the city of Zacatecas, in the FHL the Sagrario parish has the oldest records, and the records for the town you are interested in may be with these, especially if the church in Guadalupe was a chapel associated with the main church in the city.

The records for Sagrario are online at Family Search in the city of Zacatecas.

The records for the chapels, if there are any, are sometimes in separate volumes, sometimes in the books for the main church; they could be interspersed with the other records, or may be grouped at the end of each month.

All you can do is look, and hope for the best.

Help with a Surname

Can any one tell me about the Name Tachiquin. My Great Grandfather's name is Pedro Tachiquin, we do not know anything about him except that he was indio, and from Nochistlan.

Lisa,

Good news, I knew that I'd read something somewhere about the surname Tachiquin
and today I had time to look into it and found the following.

In the book Nochistlan de Zacatecas by Evelia Clotilde Quirarte there's a
section that tells of a few indian surnames.

The surname Tachiquin corresponds to families that originated in the Barrio of
San Sebastian of Nochistlan. The Tachiquin surname is believed to have
originally been tlachiunqui that was then converted to tlachinqui. The letter t
before the letter L is characteristic of the language of the cazcan nation
indigenous to the area of Nochistlan and the surrounding areas. She states that
the etimology of the word tlachiuanite means to cast a spell. (espanol),(
hechizar, aojar, el encantador, el que hechiza)

She believed that the original Tachiquin may have been an important healer or
medicine man or man of influence in the Caxcan community.

In 1913, a person with the name of Tachiquin was honored for giving his

Comment

Lisa,

As you may know, surnames were not used by the native American people. Having
said that, the surname of Tachiquin is indigenous to the area of Nochistlan and
is the only known indian surname that survived and was not converted to spanish
or the castillian language.

Aside from this, I don't know anything else about this surname other than it was
and is an original indian surname. Would your grandfather by chance be from
Tenayuca or Toyahua in the municipality of Nochistlan?

cross over name on baptismal record

I located the image of the baptismal record for Leonor Torres Benavides, (8

others on the same page.

I had asked this same question some time ago. Like you I had originally thought that this mark was for a person who had died at some point. If the child had died a birth (or was stillborn), he or she would not have been baptized, as only a living person could have been baptized.

Bill Figueroa provided the following reply to my query:

The cross or plus sign in early records of Aguascalientes is merely a check
mark to indicate whether the person was "español" and not of mixed race.
The explanation is noted in one of the first record books, I don't remember
which one. The cross was used for several years, until the priest or his
assistant started noting the race or caste as "espl." "indio" "mestizo"
"negro" "mulato" etc. In some baptismal records the priest wrote "que dicen
ser español", probably because the color of the child's skin indicated
otherwise, but in general the priest knew his parishioners and probably
their racial background. I have no doubt that some errors were

Hi Esther and all,
Are there plans to allow the selection of gender when researching a name on the new and improved version?  On the pilot version it helps bring down the thousands of results to a more manageable number.  It seems like a reasonable request to me, but then I am not computer savvy.   Thank you,  Alice

You're absolutely right.  However, when I see literally thousands of results it overwhelms me and I'd rather go through the "correct" gender first, and then if I don't have success, I tackle the rest.

The place looks like Rio de Hicpales to me. I looked on mapquest and google maps to see if I could find a place with this name; no luck. I also tried a google search ... no luck.

I also looked at a greatly expanded map of the Mexticacan area of Zacatecas (on mapquest), and did not find either a town with this name, or a river with this name.

I also looked at a few records before and after this one, but did not see it again.

Could this have been a small rancho or hacienda that no longer exists?

Parece unos Leon
luego los Garcia de Leon en Aguascalientes. He visto el mismo hombre
He notado que muchos
