Hi Amelia ,

Sorry to say that I too am stuck with my Alvarados' . I've been trying unsuccessfully to trace my Great great Grandfather Candelario Alvarados tracks .

I have him being married twice in Villa de Santiago , Nuevo Leion for the first time that I know of in the year 1833 to a Maria Concepcion Garcia and ten years later to my Great great Grandmother Quirina Saldivar Gomez in the year 1844 .

I know that just about all the people from Santiago came from Saltillo , Coahuila and before that they came from either Zacatecas or Jalisco . My problem is that I cannot find the conneciton from Zacatecas , Jalisco to Coahuila to Santiago .

At present I don't have Candelarios parents or his second last name . I thought I found him in Saltillo but it turns out that is not correct .

However ! Amelia lets' keep in touch and see where we can end up , OK .

Welester,

You mentioned that your Alvarados were originally from Zacatecas?

One of my father's cousins married a Magdaleno Alvarado from Moyahua, Zacatecas. He was born on July 22, 1857. Magdaleno's parents were Hurminio Alvarado and Ygnacia Sandoval. Magdaleno died in San Jose, CA on December 7, 1954.

Where in Zacatecas did your Alvarados originate?

Hi Emilie ,

My problem is that I can trace back the Saldivars , Trevinos and a few others but I cannot trace the Alvarados back to Zacatecas and that's the name I'm more concerned about .

Here is my dilema , Candelario ( my gg grandfather ) Alvarado is married twice in Villa de Santiago once in 1833 and a second time in 1844 to my gg grandmother Quirina Saldivar Gomez . Both marriages show no parents which means he was a viudo and so was she . I cannot for the life of me find his parents .

Now , they tell me that just about all the people from Santiago came from Saltillo and from Saltillo they came from Zacatecas , Jalisco or Aguascaliente through the RUTA DE PLATA . Anyway , I am going crazy trying to find any leads .

Unfortunately the records in Santiago are missing from 1833 to 1844 . Just my luck .

So there you have it , if you have any leads of any of your Alvarados' coming up north please fill me in .

You are absolutely right ! The town that you mention CORAL DE ALMAGUER is where all the Almaguers come from . There is a fellow in Villa de Santiago , Nuevo Leon that visited the town and spoke to the mayor . He was informed that the town holds on to the name but there are no Almaguers there for a very long time .

There are several explanations on the name , some say that it has arab origens Al-magher . Its possible being that almost all the surnames with the prefix AL do have middle east orignes but not all of them .

In the chapter for Martin Navarro and Petronila de Moctezuma (Capitulo 58) is an extract of the first document that I have become aware of that actually names this couple. For those that are interested in this family, and do not have access to a copy of this book, the extract is as follows.

I think they wont be in Jalostotilan, I think Jalos did not become its own parishuntil around that time you stated. It used to be under the direction of Santa Mariade los Lagos. So you can try there? Are you saying that you have Melchor in your database? I found an IGI entry
but it is a personal one rather than an extraction, and lists "About 1695",

I have the same entry for Melchor, the IGI, I for one use the IGI for"basic" genealogy but atually viewing records and making finds that no one else has actually is a bit more fun, I'm going to hopefullypublish an article later this year on my new findings. I have baptismalrecords for certain early 1600s people that one has found simplybecause they dont look at much microfilm and only rely on IGI.I bet Melchor would be in the LAgos de Moreno baptismal records, since prior ti 1698 Jalos was under the jurris. of Lagos.

He doesn't show up on the IGI for Lagos. Maybe as I eventually collect
copies of baptismal records for his kids I may get a hint about where to
look. Since a couple of my maternal g'mos lines come from Jalos, I'm sure
your info will eventually be helpful. I don't have the time to devote to
this that I would like, but I do like looking at the film entry itself. I
was once surprised to learn that one of my ancestors had a twin who wasn't
in the IGI database.

I have Melchor's genealogy if you need but do not have a baptismal date or record.

I learned as a newbie many years ago that the IGI is not complete and does

not contain all records for each film, only certain extractions, hence why Im going

back and extracting everything myself, it has been fun and have learned so

much, many pieces start coming together.

I have what I've recently gathered from online sources:

Melchor Manuel Perez de Paredes( born abt 1695, died prior to 6 May,
1760P md Juana Maria Martin del Campo (died 7 Apr, 1764), in Jalos., Jal.,
8 May 1719
Pts.: Agustin Perez de Paredes and Catalina Gonzalez de Hermosillo

Gpts: Alonso Perez and Luisa Paredes
Melchor Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Francisca Renteria Mojica

I descend from Melchor and Maria's son, Nicolas Ysidro Perez>Jose Ignacio

Yahualica, my 3ggpts.

Other than other children I found, that is the extent of my info. I

Jalos was a parish since the late 1500's. Prior to that they belonged to the Teocaltiche parish but separated. The new parish had seven indian town such as San Juan de los Lagos, Teocaltitan, San Gaspar, Jalos and San Miguel el Alto. This fact comes for the new edition of the Jalos history book by Jose Antonio Gutierrez.

Unfortunately many of the records were destroyed by a fire in the late 1600. Only two great records that have genealogical information is the Cofradia de las Animas which was founded circa 1628 and libro de defunciones which start in the late 1650s. Both of those records survived the fire. Other older records can be found in the Sagrada Mitra in Guadalajara, such as padrones which I have copies of.

Hope this helps.

Stuart,
I am just guessing, but the 'P' in the greek alphabet is 'Rho' and in some forms of ancient Greek, like those used in Athens and Corinth, was written as 'P' or 'R'. Modern Greek uses 'P', and in the Cyrillic alphabet (e.g. introduced in Russia by St. Cyrill) its wirtten as 'P' but pronounced as 'R' (e.g. initials of soviet republic: CCCP), where the "P" stands for Respublik=Republic . Our 'P' in that alphabet would be 'Pi', like the geometry symbol.

Jaime Alvarado

Comentario

Stuart:

I agree with Jaime. The letters are actually the greek letters for the name as opposed to the latin letters so not only is the P actually a "Rho" which would be pronounced like "R" but the X is not a cross at all but rather the greek letter "Chi" which would be pronounced "K" thus the Xptobal is an abbreviation for CH-R-tobal.

You will note from this book that Cristo was abbreviated Xpto and cristiano was abbreviated Xptno... all which adhere to the same pattern of abbreviation:

I also agree the X is the Greek letter "Chi" (which I would pronounce as an English H or a Spanish J) and the P is the greek letter "Rho", and were there from the beginning in the greek spelling of Christos: Chi-Rho-Iota-Sigma-Tau-Omicron-Sigma.
Some words that start with CH in English or C (or even Q) in Spanish are derived from words that start with X (chi) in Greek like:
Chronometer and Cronologia (from Chronos, time), Chromium and Cromosoma (from Chromos, color), Chronicle and Cronista (from Chronios, enduring; and this must also come from Chronos, time), Chiropractic and Quirofano (from Cheir, hand)...
It would be interestng to know how Christophorus (Christos-Phero, the one who carries Christ -St. Christopher is usually depicted carrying a Child Jesus over his shoulder-) became Cristobal.

I believe that this would be quite an undertaking (creating new surname lists), while there already is a method of searching for people researching the same surnames. It is in place under the GEDCOM. I believe that there are only a handful of members who have submitted their GEDCOMS compared to the total number of members. Maybe this would be a good time for all members to consider submitting GEDCOMS, even if it is only a partial GEDCOM. I think most of us are using software that will create a GEDCOM for us and if not, there are numerous free programs out there for use. This is one of the advantages of becoming a member, access to other member's research, but to take full advantage of it, there is a give and take. Please consider today the day that you share some research. The GEDCOM search in place on this website is a powerful tool and easy to use, but in order for it to be effective, members need to share.

this group is for research regarding the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas
y/o Aguascalientes. As long as your gedcom includes info on that area
then I think it is ok. However if you have a very large gedcom file and
5% of it is your Mexican side and the rest your Anglo side I think this
would not be a good idea. There are ways to select individuals from your
research to be included in your gedcom. If your gedcom only includes few
of your Mexican side then be selective and divide up your gedcom. If
your gedcom is 50/50 and it would be a large under doing then just
upload the whole thing. We have lots of space available for uploading so
that is not an issue.

If Arturo thinks of some reason why uploading the Anglo side then I'll
defer to his judgment as I'm not up on the technical end of it.

An easy way to find other members who are researching your town or surname of interest is to simply go to (after logging on):

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/search/profile

Type in the surname or place name. Since everyone has filled out a profile with the places and surnames that they are researching, this should bring up members who have indicated they are researching the given surname or place.

Everyone should make sure to keep their profiles up to date with new places or surnames as your research progresses.

I also encourage everyone to upload a GEDCOM. It is by far the most useful tool for sharing your genealogy as it is easily searchable across members' trees.

Raquel,

This gave me an idea. If there were a list of surname groups with each
member being able to join a specific surname group so that each member could
see which other members are researching the same surname it could possibly
help with some with their investigations. Only those that join could see the
others so there wouldn't be anyone included that didn't want to even if they
are researching the surname.

Armando,
That sounds like a great idea and a useful resource.  I don't know what the percentage is of members that have posted a gedcom, but there must be many, that although actively researching, haven't.   Thanks,

If you want to upload your GEDCOM to Nuestros Ranchos, go to the GEDCOM section of the site. You will get an email the first time you go there with instructions on how to request a tree in the database to which you can upload your GEDCOM. Basically, you will simply need to send in your username and request to moderator [at] nuestrosranchos [dot] com but you can only do that after you have gone onto that section of the site and gotten the welcome email.

You will then have a blank tree to which you can upload a GEDCOM.

I believe this question has been asked, however, I have not yet seen a response. My tree also has an "Anglo" side, would that be proper to upload in this forum?

Dear Dennis:
I also have an anglo side on my family tree. In fact it is all my side that I cut out and my husband's side is the one that is on Nuestros. Anyway, before I sent my GEDCOM in, I separated the files. I named the the new file (my husband's side) something different. Familytree has an option (I am not sure about which other programs do, but I have used three genealogy programs and they all had this option) to uncheck which people you do not want included in an export. I unchecked all people born after 1916 that I was unsure if they were still living. I then submitted only my husband's side of the tree of people who were not still living. I have done the same for my Irish GEDCOM, by separating it from my main tree. I always keep my main tree intact and work from that.

We can't see each others' gedcom files so it is my understanding it is of no
use to upload one. However I don't know how the TNG tab works -
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/tng What can be done is save the PAF to
RTF and upload that to your folder. Instructions can be found at
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15482 Apart from that have you
uploaded the gedcom in .ged format to all of the free genealogy websites
such as www.geneanet.org (the one I recommend the most and quite a few
NuestrosRanchos members use) www.miparentela.com (this is owned by
myheritage but w/o a limitation on the number of people in the tree. (Many
NuestrosRanchos members also use this one) www.genoom.com (which most of my
relatives use) and rootsweb? Ancestry.com is free for two weeks which you
can cancel as soon as you upload your info and still add to it afterwards
for free. Most of the above websites allow for uploading and downloading
.ged files and creating ancestral and descendant reports in PDF format

If Tepezala is the same as Tepesala, then possibly Rincon de Romos. The FHL library has no films for a church in this village; it may have been served by a chapel from a larger church. Rincon de Romos is relatively close. Pinos, Zacatecas is also close, but farther than Rincon de Romos.

Hola Armando y George:

There are many references to persons born in Tepezalá in the 1700's. Both Zacatecas and Aguascalientes had jurisdictions in that area at different times, and it appears that activities of the priests of the neighboring parishes frequently overlapped. Asientos being mining territory, I suspect too that some of the families moved around a bit. Anyway, I have seen references to Tepesalá in Asientos, and in Rincón (San José de Gracia), and in Sagrario (Villa de Aguascalientes). Check Pinos and Ojocaliente Zacatecas also.

Hi George:

Miguel is right about the Valderrama part. We still need to prove it just in case,
like genealogy its myth versus documentable proof. I can say its probably the right family
just being the Valderrama of Lagos de Moreno. Is there anything that says Joseph and
Nicolas were half brothers. Just a note they can be full brothers and still have different last
names. Nicolas was probably named after his great grandfather. A great example would
be the Guerra Valdez family. Every now and then you'll find two brothers although the same parents
use different surnames for various reasons. Surnames were important in colonial times especially
when it involved a title of nobility o Mayorazgo lots of exmaples in Mexico City.

Zacatecas always seem to be sticky research in my case. Records are good up to 1642 or so. For
the city of Zacatecas. From then until the early 1800s they were burned by a priest during the
Cristero war, it's so painful to know we could have learned so much from these records but
unfortunately they are gone. I don't even want to think if any pre 1600s records were also burned.
I know if they existed my research would benefit greatly. Needless to say they could have gone to
nearby places if your luck say maybe Fresnillo or Jerez to baptize, check nearby places. Many nothern
families were in the mining industry causing this great travel from Zacatecas to Durango for example.

This Prado line could take you to Aguascalientes these Guzman del Prado (de Guzman y Prado), couple
lines left for the city of Zacatecas.

Thank you for your info and advice. I did not know about the impact of the
Cristero War on the church records in Zacatecas. I'll look closely through
the batch records for Fresnillo and Jerez, just in case. Unfortunately, my
Prado line stops in Durango with a "padres no conocidos". I've yet to stop
on my Paes Guzman line, which may eventually take me to Zacatecas. Thanks
again.--Raquel

Since you are doing research in Zac. Have you run into the last name Barron in the 1700's?. I am looking for a Jose Monico Barron who was born there about 1761.

Elvira,

This is not a surname that's common in Nochistlan. Nochistlan is at the border
with Jalisco, it borders the region considered to be Los Altos de Jalisco such
as Teocaltiche, Tepatitlan, Yahualica, Mexticacan, Cuquio etc.

Randy,
I've encountered similar situations where siblings are baptized -or appear to have been baptized- in different neighboring localities. Some of the explanations are as follows: 1) The parish kept the records, and the name of the church where the children were actually baptized was recorded at margin. Often that information was not entered into LDS record, and only the name of the parish appears. Upon inspection of the actual image, the actual location of ceremony (baptism, marriage, etc.) can be verified. 2) Priest absence at a church (for multiple reasons). Accordingly, ceremonies had to be conducted temporarily in the neighboring town. Upon examination of the church books you would sometimes reference of such temporary absence and transfer of records. 3) People would choose to christen their children at different churches, for multiple reasons, including respective family ties of the father or the mother to the town where their corresponding families resided. Clues to this c

It is within the realm of possiblities. While I am no expert, here are my
thoughts: Hopefully, someone already has these individuals in their family
tree and already have information, or have ready access to it, Are both
parents from San Juan de Los Lagos? Perhaps one is from San Diego de
Alejandria, or you might be able to locate siblings of theirs there, to
strengthen your hunch. Have you checked whether their is a Juan Antonio De
Anda and a Gerturdis Padilla marriage in San Diego?. But it is best to look
at the films to see what else you can learn. They may indicate grandparents,
where the parents are from, or have padrinos that are the same or ones you
know are siblings of the parents. I don't know when the Jalisco films will
be available online, but hopefully, soon!

Comentario

I have this couple, it appears I did not have the kids from San Diego de Alejandria.
Based on what information you provided I'm sure they are the same family. I
would understand to take extreme precaution if were dealing with very long distance
travel but if its Los Altos especially the northern region its very probable. Especially
since San Diego de Alejandria is down the road. This family is DE ANDA ALTAMIRANO.
Juan Antonio de Anda Altamirano and Gertrudis Padilla (probably Padilla Davila) married
in San Juan de los Lagos 30 dec 1821.) I have not done much work on this line but if you
should consider ordering the baptismal and marriage film for these and study it a bit more.
Then we would be able to hopefully extend this line of the ANDA ALTAMIRANO and Padilla
further back. I have dealt mostly with 1500s-1700s. Here and there the 1800s for these
famiies. If you do order the marriage record if you would be kind and share it I would be most
grateful. I hope this helps a bit.

Comentario

Randy McNeal
Juan Antonio de Anda and Gertrudis Padilla are my third great grandparents through their son Jose Todosio Anda Padilla. You have the same marriage record as I have and I will order it and the baptism records. If you provide me with you email, I will send you a copy.
My Spanish is about as good as a four year olds so it takes me awhile to translate the films.

Comentario

If the marriage record does not give much detail, the matrimonial investigation may fill in the gaps.

After 1800, most baptismal records name the grandparents, especially if the record is completely handwritten. If the record is a fill-in-the-blanks form, then it might not.

HI Patricia Haro; Have you ever searched in the Cedulario Heraldico de Conquistadores de la Nueva Espana. This book lists all the persons who were awarded a Coat of Arms by the Spanish crown during the conquest of Mexico. Perhaps you will find your ancestors arms there. Also the Gary Felix Genealogy website has a list of the Coat of Arms awarded during the conquest. Good Luck. Jose Michel

Hola Patty, Segun el libro National Popular Politics in Early Independent Mexico 1820-1847

Hacienda El Carro - Villa Gonzalez, Zacatecas

I am looking for information on Leandro Esparza, in 1860 he worked as mayordomo on the Hacienda El Carro, which is now the town of Villa Gonzalez Ortega, Zacatecas.

I did a quick look in the IGI for the names you mentioned, with rather limited results.

I did not find a marriage record. I tried Leandro Esparza with both Maria Esparza (this would find "Maria Benita") and Benita Esparza without success.

Is Maria Benita's surname Esparza? I did not find any children for Leandro Esparza and Maria Benita Esparza, although there is one child of a Leandro Esparza and Maria Michaela Esparza in 1827, in Aguascalientes. I found none in Zacatecas.

In searching the new Family Search website I find that Leandro Esparza and Michaela Esparza had several children in Aguascalientes in the 1820s and 1830s. None in Zacatecas.

I looked at one of Leandro and Michaela's children's baptismal records from 1822, which names the grandparents Jose Mara Esparza and Ysidra Torres (paternal) and Domingo Esparza and Maria Pasqual (no last name) (maternal).

If Leandro was the majordomo in the 1860s, this suggests to me that he was older at that point. Thus marrying and

George, thank you. I spent quite a bit of time going through old posts on this website and I had planned to contact you. You seem to be very familiar with Esparzas in this area. Yes, both Benita and Leandro have the surname of Esparza. I have found them listed as the grandparents for all of the children of Francisco Esparza Esparza and Cenobia Ruiz de la Pena. They had 10 children and were married, so the records list the grandparents. He was not married to the mother of my grandfather, Gustavo Esparza. Her name was Maria Nestora Alonzo. I have found the civil birth record for Gustavo and it is very terse with little information. This is complicated by the fact that Francisco was not Catholic, at least that is the tradition of the family in Zacatecas. I have spent hours on the IGI and also with the Catholic church records at Noria de Angeles at El Carro and in Aguascalientes where I am now sure that Benita came from. Thank you for your help. I will report any success that I have

Richard, welcome to the group. I believe we share some links and areas. At one point my ancestor Andres de Camino
and his wife Juliana de Oviedo from Pinos, Zac to Noria de Angeles just down the road around the first quarter
of the XIX century. it was part at one pointthe parish of San Matias (Pinos). Parroquia de Los Angeles (Noria de Angeles)
kept being anexed from one place to another so boundaries changed.

My mother is from Aguascalientes and am a Ruiz de Esparza about 12 times descending from 7 children of Lope Ruiz de Esparza.
The one that seems the most common with people as to descent is Lorenza Ruiz de Esparza.

I also wanted to share my Camino family married the Ruiz de la Pena in the early 1800s they came (well this line in and out of
Pinos and Aguascalientes) came from Cantabria, Spain at the end of the XVIII century. I have that marriage document stating
"originario de los Reynos de Castilla....usual spiel).

I noticed you posted your lines online and as usual try

Hello Daniel,

Yes, it does sound like we have some links. My family goes back to Ruiz de Esparza in Aguascalientes. I haven't made the link to Lope Ruiz de Esparza yet, but I believe that I am not far from this. I know that my great grandmother, Maria Nestora Alonzo's parents were Diaminiana Lopez and Antonio Alonzo from Ojo Caliente. She had a brother named Aurelio. Also she married Hermenejildo Mendez. They immigrated to San Antonio, TX (not the parents.) Also, because I am not related to Ruiz de la Pena, I have not researched that line at all. One of my cousins in Mexico gave me a large folder of information on Ruiz de la Pena, but it is all in Spanish and I have not had any of it translated. Thank you for your note.
