I'm also a coin collector (mostly US coins). I have a few thousand coins that I collected in the 1950s and 1960s. Most are AU or XF condition. Some are very rare and very valuable.

My prize coin was given to me a few years ago. It's a silver peso from Mexico. It is almost uncirculated. It was minted in 1944, the year of my birth in Mexico.

I read somewhere that the term "two bits" was in reference of a quarter dollar (25 cents).

This was in reference to the "8 Real Coins". 8 divided by 4 was "2" bits or one quarter.

That's also when the pirates of the 16th century used the term "pieces of 8" (referring to their booty of "8 Real Coins".

Coins from Colonial Mexico circulated widely in the English colonies in North America, and in fact were common in the early days of the United States. In fact, they circulated widely throughout the world.

The 8 reales silver coin is the size of the old silver dollars, and when in one of the better grades is quite striking! This coin is also called the Spanish Milled Dollar, or a Piece of Eight. Thomas Jefferson recommended to the Continental Congress in 1776 that it be adopted as the official currency of the new United States.

The 8 reales coin was divided into 8 parts or bits. Two bits was equal to to 25 cents in the US (remember the old rhyme ... 2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar?).

The Mexico city mint mark is an M with a little circle over it. These same coins were also minted in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala and Peru; these will be identified by different mint marks.

Earlier coins exist from the 1500s; these are irregular in shape and are referred to as "cobs." These are

There certainly was an ethnic identity of being mexicano long before independence. The Mexica were one of the three (and principal) ethnic groups that formed the triple alliance of the Aztec empire. The term Aztec is an ex-post academic invention precisely to differentiate the Mexican empire (pre-colonization), its culture, society, etc. from that related to the modern concept of Mexico (which includes many additional territories and lacks some such as El Salvador). Its not that people disrespect the spelling of Mexico, I spell it Mejico b/c thats how I was taught by my parents. My father dislikes the X. Because in Spanish it would make the S sound. I always get criticized by other mejicanos but I always tell them, a lot of people in Mexico spell it like that. -Daniel

To Arturo:

The use of the letter "x" in Spanish is one of the strongest indicators of an Arabic influence in the language. At some point the Academia Real decided that the sound represented by the "x" wasn't acceptable anymore. I no longer remember which edition of their dictionary enunciates the change. The decision to keep the "x" in the Spanish of the Americas was made at the time the nations of the western hemisphere broke away from Spanish political control.

The sound in Arabic is made by bending back the tongue and vibrating the back part of the velum in the buccal cavity at the same time forcing air into the pharyngeal area. What actually occurred is that the sounds of Spanish have become more oral and less guttural. When the christians arrived in the western hemisphere the almost 100% phonetic ability of 6th century Spanish came in handy. Spanish succeeded in graphically representing virtually every sound they heard in the languages of the newly discovered indigenes.

The cover of my passport says MEXICO, and below is the seal of the country with the official name: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. In Spain they usually spell it with J.
The letter X is pronounced in different ways in Mexican Spanish, especially with words derived from native languages.
Sometimes we pronounce it like a Spahish J (sort of English H with thick Mexican accent): México, Texas, Oaxaca, Xalisco, Xalapa, Xavier.
Sometimes like a CS (English X): Texcoco, examen, explicar
Sometimes like S: Xochimilco, Xóchitl
Sometimes like SH: Xola
In every official document (money, birth certificates, military and voter's registration) you will find the name of the country written with an X (Estados Unidos Mexicanos), and also in any official international delegation (we are just MEXICO at the United Nations, OEA, Olympics, World Cup).
There is a famous poem by Ricardo López Méndez that says: "México, creo en ti, porque escribes tu nombre con la equis que algo tiene de cruz y de calvario" (Mexico

So, what do you mean by this. Ok, it is currently written with an X but you
have to realize that México was not always México. In the past it did not
exist; things, places, people need to be looked at in their historical
setting when doing genealogy. The truth is that México as it exists today
used to be part of a different country, just like the United States of
America and they both usted to have different names. Nothing to be ashamed
about. The fact remains that when you are talking about pre-1900, it is not
México. So there should be no problem realizing that the names are different
for different time periods, and should not be designated as having their
name spelled in just one way.
Do not get me wrong, if one is talking about modern México, post 1900, then
the current writing of the name should be used.

Well, the original commentary was that "I was just wondering about the politics/tradition/meaning behind the use of such a spelling and would appreciate any comments". So what I mean is that in the 20th and 21st Centuries the official name of the country is written with X which is pronounced as a Spanish J, either if you use the long name of "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", the also official short name of "México", or the less common but also used "República Mexicana", so it falls in the politics. In the past Jalisco was written as Xalisco, the capital of Veracruz to date is Xalapa, and the chiles named after it are known as Jalapeños, yet we pronounce the X as SH when talking about the Mexicas. Regarding the pre-1900's existance of Mexico, I'm pretty sure we have been officially using one or another form of the name since the 1820's, although I'm not sure about the spelling or pronunciation.

Interesting to see that in postage stamps:
-On 15 May, 1864 the regency replaced the existing stamps with the Eagle stamps depicting the Coat of arms of Mexico, an eagle killing a snake. A crown was added to the eagle to indicate the monarchy and the spelling was changed from "Méjico" to "México"-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_Mexico

Yet in money the X has been used since the first empire in the 1820's:

I don't know if there have been any coins or bills issued with the J.

It wouldnt be until the Mexican Revolution that would unite Mexico socailly and politically, even though it somewhat still isnt. Can anyone comment on this part? I was told no one really used the nationality Mejicano? Socially wise people still used there raza to describe people, just español was replaced with guerro or blanco? The last pre modern Mejico census around the time of the revolution stated every persons race. This is why now united as Mexicans, people get confused what their race is, eventhough Mexican is not a race, its a nationality. Mexicans can be, white, black, mestizo, asian and anything between.
Also, there is no such thing as Mexican Spanish. Spanish spoken in Mexico is called Castellano. -Daniel

I've lived in Mexico for decades and I still have not met any Mexican who claims to speak Castellano, that term is mainy used n Spain because it is politically incorrect to call the language Spanish since there are other "Spanish languages" as catalán, gallego and vasco. We speak español, yet the Spanish we speak is different to the one spoken in other countries like Argentina and Spain, and even when they are making fun of us they use words and phrases typical of Mexico.
And yes, there is a Mexican Spanish, not accordng to me, but to many scholars that have written about it:
-El español mexicano durante la colonia: El paradigma verbal en el Altiplano Central. R Acevedo - 2000 - Universidad de Guadalajara
-Vocales caducas en el español mexicano. MJ Canellada, AZ Vicente - Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica, 1960

Comentario

I've lived in the USA for 63 years. I learned Castellano in High School Spanish Class. I can only say that there are different Spanish's. Castellano, Mexican. and USA. i.e. a simple match (fire): Castellano= fosforo? Mexican= serillo? USA = Mecha ? also: railroad train: Castellano/Mexican= ferrocarril? USA= tren. also: corn: Castellano= maize? Mexican(Aztec)/USA= elote also turkey: Castellano=pavo? Mexican (Aztec)/USA= huajolote.

The point being is that Spainards, Mexicans, USA Hispanics, and other nation's Hispanics tend to "nationalize" the Spanish language to fit their own native country.

'hablo castellano' is b/c we all know we speak Castellano, its the only dialectin Mexico

actually its politically correct to call all the Spanish in the Americas Castellano,

who was the Monarchs who sent the conquistadors Isabel de Castilla. Just because people speak the language differently doesnt mean its different. I think you interpret the term Castellano as the accent from Spain, this is false. Enrique Iglesias and Vicente Fernandez both speak Castellano just as an example. I have many docuements, ie the census of mexicowhere it states people speak castellano in Mexico, I can send it to you if you like.

Hi! I know that castellano and español do indeed refer to the same language known as Spanish. However, pretty much everybody I know in Mexico calls the language español rather than castellano. That term is kind of an archaism in Mexico. In all Mexican primary schools, whether they are private or public, everybody has to use same the free textbooks provided by the government, and those regardng the language are named "Español". So, I'll dare to say thay in current Mexican Spanish, "castellano" is "español".

For me it is kind of funny that due to political correctness the only place were Spanish should not be called Spanish but Castillian is Spain. Yet, the Castillian language authorities in Spain are members of the "Real Academia de la Lengua Española".

Current Mexican Census questionnaires refer to the language as español rather than castellano, they actually assume everybody speaks Spanish, they only ask you if you speak "español" if you said you speak a native language:

I was raised spelling Mexico as Méjico. I asked this along time ago. Maybe its because

my parents are alteños. According to my grandfather (I try to paraphrase as best as I remember!)

I guess in Old Castilian the X was used for J, since the letter didnt exist but the sound did.

So the X made the J sound. When the conquistadores came they learned the people were

Mexica (Mesheeca) so they gave it a more Europeanized name, Mexico (except the X stood for sounds that didnt exist in Castilian, ie. SH. During the colony it was actually still pronounced Meshico, except it had the Castilian Whistle not actually SH like in English. When more Europeans were deciding where to go in America, thye would prob ask "Por que no vamos a Mexico (Mesico) (whistle). But at the same Mexico was really used. Mexico being Spain's principal colony usually was just reffered as New Spain, it was common usage. Then or eventually in the early colony the X slowly changed to the J and K sound. I guess there

Calisto Samaniego, Sacerdote

Hello to all!

I just got back from Guadalajara. I was not able to attend the Valle de Guadalupe meeting because my uncle was very ill so I went straight to Guadalajara. Not all was lost. He told me that my GGGG Grandfather, Calisto Samaniego born around 1820, probably in Juchipila, was a priest that left the priesthood to marry/be with Lina Salazar, my GGGG Grandmother. I descend from his son Jesus Samaniego and Cayetana Castaneda. Any idea on how I can get started solving this mystery? I can't find any other info on him/Lina.

Hello,

This is a comment regarding a "dote," As far as I know, in Mexico, a dote
was for a marriage. I know for a fact that in the mid 1600's one of my
ancestors, the Alferez Real de la Villa de Salamanca Dn. Cristobal de
Arizaga, doto the sum of $70,000 pesos o reales to her fiance Da. Maria de
Elizalde y Guzman, daughter of Dn. Antonio de Elizalde y Perez de Vergara,
Alferez Real de la Ciudad de Valladolid and Da. Mariana de Guzman.

When I was very young, I used to hear that nuns also got a dote because they
were getting marry to the church...

Have a good day!

they may have been born in Santa Catarina Jalisco (AKA General Andres Figueroa)

"Año de 1739
Autos sobre la dotación de las huérfanas que fundó para esta Villa de Aguas Calientes, la de Lagos, y Real de los Asientos, Don Ylario González.
Superintendente de ellas y demás Dotaciones Piadosas el Dr. D. Manuel Colón de Larreategui, Cura Beneficiado y Vicario Juez Eclesiástico de dicha Villa"

The freelance translation of this title is as follows:

"Year of 1739
"Proceedings about the endowment for orphans founded for the town of Aguas Calientes, and those of Lagos and the Real de los Asientos by Mr. Ylario González.
The Superintendent of these and other pious causes Dr. Don Manuel Colón de Larreategui, Clergyman and Vicar, Judge of Ecclesiastical Affairs of said village."

The introduction explains that Mr. Ylario González, obviously a wealthy man, left a substantial amount of money for charity and

I thought a dote was for marriage, a dowry. I might be mistaken but I
thought it that was the meaning of dote. If that is the case then these poor
orphaned daughters are being given the opportunity to marry by means
of raffling their names. They would then be provided with a sum sufficient
to cover the expenses of the marriage. In essence they would be able to
bring some money to the marriage thus being a more attractive companion.

Thank you Bill for your help....and everyone's input....I noticed that Ylario Gonzalez' name was mentioned in every document and thought it strange.....since I don't read spanish very well.....it's always good to have another set of eyes. I'm excited about this find....I'm thinking of extracting the names for future use....I may need it later.

As far as the Calvillo genealogy, I have 3 branches of Calvillo's, none that are related to date and I've taken them back into the early to mid 1700's. I'll have to look at that genealogy again once I finish looking for missing ancestors on this film.

Thanks again all

The secondary meaning of "dotar" is to donate funds to an institution or a beneficent organization. Francisco Xavier Rincon Gallardo's family was immensely wealthy. I read a few of the entries in the online entries. A gift of about 23,000 pesos was parceled out to "huérfanas, españolas, hijas legítimas” who could prove their lineage. The prize for the winner of the lottery was to carry a lighted candle and a lamp in a procession. The observance was to take place on Feb. 2 in honor of the Virgin Mary’s suffering. The winner also had to attend a three-hour Mass.

The lottery was to be held in Aguascalientes, Lagos, and Real de Asientos. There are about 40 – 50 letters of application/interest in the first 75 images. I didn’t translate the records nor read them carefully. I can’t say whether or not there was some cash prize for the winners. The Calvillo family was singled out for special treatment. There are more than twenty letters detailing who is descended from

A dote in my studies has come up as a dowry. I imagine that an individual
who is providing the dote is in actuality providing a dotacion as apposed to
a donacion. A donacion being a donation. The dotacion specifies the perpouse
for which the sum is to be used, a dote (dowry).
Why else would so many families and young women want to participate in this
event other than the money that was going to be given to the winner or
winners of the sorteo (raffle). Let's face it, it was expensive to get
married and the father of the bride provides the dowry; for that matter it
is still expensive. I am just suggesting that their might be an opportunity
for these doncellas huerfanas (female orphans) to receive some assistance
with their marriage since they were fatherless and motherless. 16,000 R was

Rose, Eduardo, David,

The draft to select a winner at the Real de Asientos was conducted on 17 September 1739. The results were announced the following day and are in Images 35 & 36. The award was Rs 200 (two hundred reales) to be withdrawn from the orphan fund of Rs 16,000 left by Don Hilario González. Here is a transcription of that announcement with words spelled according to modern usage and most abbreviations expanded for easy reading:

Nota al margen: "Elección y Sorteo / María Michaela de Chávez / en 17 de Octubre de 1739 (transposed numbers, reads 1793) se le entregaron a la contenida en este auto los doscientos pesos de su dote, como consta de el recibo de su .... que se halla en el 3er. cuaderno a hoja 19 y para que conste pongo esta razón. Hi Rose,

I took a peek at these records and I think they might be referring to young
women that entered a religious order -

"para ser admitida al (Sorteo)..." means to be admitted to something
"las pobres guerfanas se sorten en la Parrochial deste Real, siendo una
pobre guerfana con las calidadades que dicha obra pia pide...." here it goes
on to say that poor orphan girls with the necessary qualities can sign up
(sorten) at the church.

These frases were repeated in almost all the records I looked at. These are
definitely not baptimal or marriage records - the only thing I can think of
is that these women were to become nuns.

I'll keep reading - maybe there are more clues

Thanks Angelina....that's what I was thinking also....only because my research colleague just recently bought a book from a book seller in Mexico regarding the genealogy of nuns from Santa Maria de los Lagos.

The marriage informacions don't begin until about page 80 and there is a 1736 on this. If anyone is looking for Maria Antonia Carrillo de Sandi the daughter of Alexo Carrillo de Sandi and Margarita Murillo de Peralta, she is on image 90.

I became curious about your "discovery" in the 1739 Informacion matrimonial, Ags. If you read through images #50-75, inclusive, you will find genealogical info about a Calvillo family. Many descendants of Pedro Calvillo and Juan Marcelino Calvillo are named in the communications- grandchildren, brothers, etc. I think you were or are researching a Calvillo family. If I am mistaken just disregard the intrusion.

For your parents and probably grandparents birth records of Matanzas you probably need to go to Ojuelos de Jalisco, or find someone that will go for you, to request a copy of the birth certificate. Or you can wait until records show up on pilot.familysearch.org

If you have a relative or friend in Mexico that has Telmex they should be able to access the white pages online for Tamaulipas using their account. I don't know how else you would find a phone book for those towns unless you went there yourself.

I looked in a book titled Census Records for Latin America and the Hispanic
United States written by Lyman D. Platt and there are only Censuses for
Ojuelos from 1817 to 1825, they are probably Padrones. Lagos de Moreno about
the same distance in the opposite direction from Matanzas as Ojuelos has a
more recent census (padron most likely) of 1874 and another in 1810 the
first film 221884 and the second 83. Lagos which is the same as Lagos de
Moreno in the book has padrones in 1820, 1824, & 1831 films: 168822, 168833,
and 168847-48 respectively.

Actually Antonio Cortez and Ma Manuela Alvarado...they were my grandparents they are both deceased. I'm doing Geneology on them I can not find them anywhere so I need help to find any records on them. They were both born in Matansas Jalisco.

Eusebio Cortez Alvarado is my uncle I'm not even sure if he is still alive...I'm just trying to see if I can track him down. I did know that my father had one brother and when I found out 3 years ago....that is when I started my search for him in Gonzalez Tamaulipas or Manuel Tamaulipas but still no luck.

Thanks

For Maria Cortes: my advice is that once you located the place, Matansas, try related web sites like Panoramio or use Google Earth, some people use tu upload pictures of family or of places, you could try to contact some using the mail adresses in those pictures; other way is  to look for clubs in the U. S. A., also social reunion events annouced in the web, from that place. For location and some info use pueblos.america.com site. Hope it is a help. Take care. Always be precautios.

I have looked in pilot 1930 census but Matansas Jalisco is not listed. Ojuelos de Jalisco is the Municipal and I have looked in both places Family Search and Nuestro Rancho but the years are not listed in Nuestro Rancho and I can find them in Family Search.

I got my dad B-Certificate from Ojuelos de Jalisco because he was also born in Matansas but that was 3 years ago. I have not been back since then due to work and time.

I made a mistake of assuming Nuestros Ranchos has a complete listing of Ojuelos de Jalisco. I found that there are records for both Matanzas and Ojuelos de Jalisco for the years you are asking about. Have you looked at all of the ones listed at Family History Library Catalog for those years?

Matanzas - http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/printing/titledetail…

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question but it sounds like you are
looking for living relatives and or their children. One way is to get a
phone book from that area of Mexico and specifically that city and then
call all the Cortez Alvarado's first then if you have a good calling
plan for inexpensive calls to Mexico (try http://stiphonecard.com/ I
have found them very cheap) try calling every Cortez in that city giving
much information about you and finally asking if their Cortez might be
the same Cortez.

just an idea for searching for living relatives.

Evelyn:

David's insightful guessing at the correct name was the breakthrough we needed.

There is an Emilia CALVILLO baptized on 21 Apr 1882 in Union de San Antonio, Jalisco, daughter of Ignacio Calvillo and Felipa Gutierrez. You can find it searching on the familysearch pilot website as it does not appear in the regular IGI or VRI.

It's a hunch but I would be willing to bet that this is Carlos' mother. You can find the baptism record on Film 440518. That record should list the precise village in Union de San Antonio where her family lived which may give some clues as to where you might find the family in the 1930 Census. I would also order the relevant 1902 baptism film from the same town while you are at it and try to find Carlos' baptism. His baptism is too recent to appear extracted online but I would be willing to bet that he was baptized in Union de San Antonio, like his mother.

Comentario

Evelyn:

Welcome to the group. To begin with, the name CABILLO seems a bit awry. You have to take into account people's lack of literacy and often confusion of record keepers... so given the strange name I would consider other similar names such as CARRILLO or CABELLO in your searches. Also, there is no single "Union" in Jalisco, but rather a number of different Uniones:

Union de Guadalupe (Atoyac)
Union de San Antonio
Union de Tula

Now, there are a number of sources worth looking into to try to get more information:

Mexico Border Crossing Records, searchable on Ancestry.com
(His border crossing might have more information or more correct information than his naturalization record)

Mexico 1930 Census available on pilot.familysearch.org
(He may not be there but his parents and siblings might still be. This is not searchable for Jalisco yet, but you can browse the images for the three Uniones in question, though that may be too time consuming without having more information

Thank you, I don't copy all files completely but I've found that there is so much information that I don't use but have stored in my records it would be a waste to just sit on it when others can use but but may not have the time or availability of a history center. That's another great thing about a group like this, we can all profit from sharing.

I did watch, and while it was entertaining I found it lacking. It was an over view of the DNA trail out of Africa and did not really touch on any specific haplogroups, especially the Y DNA haplogroups.

They did touch on the mtDNA group "B" which I enjoyed as my mtDNA group is "B". I think it would be best to do a series of shows and touch on specifics as opposed to leaving us wanting more from a 2 hr show.

Best, Robert ~

I saw a sneak peek on Friday, courtesy of a relative who works for IBM. It
was an hour sneak peek, and the program, I believe, filled a two hour
block. I don't get the National Geographic Channel, so didn't get to watch
the whole program. What I saw was very good. Nothing new, but put it in an
easy-to-understand and interesting format. I emailed all my relatives,
encouraging them to see it. Sorry I didn't think to do the same for my

Eric,
Thank you so much for your kind offer to help. Yes, you're absolutely right about the miss-spellings. It's a minor miracle I found my mother Enedina Onate, as she was entered as Pardina! I have Onate crossings at Laredo, TX from 1917 to 1944 en route to San Antonio, and they rendered some good information. I was hoping to search two other border crossing towns Del Rio, TX and Eagle Pass, TX within the time frame of 1910-1940. Unfortunately, all I can give you are the first names of my Onates: Rosalio, Petra, Adolfo, Leonarda, Luis, and Maria Angela. I will totally understand if the information I'm giving you is to too vague. Thanks again for your generous offer and have a good evening.

Alice,

Seems you had more information than you gave. If you have the Laredo
crossings, you knew they would have been born around 1900 and were from
Aguacalientes? That's if the Adolfo is your Onate. Do you have their
mother's family name?

Which are siblings and which are parents?

Do you have them on the 1930 census in San Antonio?

Do you know if crossed other places or are you just hoping for more
information?

Not trying to be mean or nosy, just need every clue to winnow them out of
the crowd.

I'm familiar with research in these places. My g grandfather Dr L. E.

get from it

Enedina Onate de Bravo
record date 9-23-1944
age 27 years born at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon , Mexico

accompanied by Maria Teresa- 5 years

there is a date of 5-14-1915 , not sure what it means
I can't make out the line with name and address of relative or friend in
Mexico

She signs it Enedina O de Bravo, so I'll look for crossings under de Bravo

Hello Eric,
You're not mean, you're extremely thoughtful! Thank you, yes those are my parents. However, another problem with these border crossing documents is that the info is inaccurate. My mother had told us that in order to "expedite" the process, they all claimed to be from Monterrey, which wasn't true. It's my Onates that I'm having trouble with. This is what I've got: My maternal ggrandparents are Rosalio Onate and Petra Candelas. Their children were Maria Angela, Luis, Adolfo, and Leonarda. Rosalio, Maria Angela, and Pedro (her son?)acrossed on 02/12/1917 claiming Villa Garcia, Zac as where they're from.

Then there's another family crossing this time including Adolfo on 04/16/1920 where they all claim they're from Aguascalientes. I've never seen Petra, Leonarda, or Luis on the Laredo crossings and I know that Leonarda also visited San Antonio, so she might have crossed at Del Rio or Eagle Pass. That might give birthdates to work with. As a matter of fact, I've found

Alice,

Maybe you can get the death certificate itself from Bexar county. I've
gotten one from them before to determine if a Robledo was related to us. It
cost under $20. I'll look around this week and see if I can find the
procedure to follow.

Have you tried using the 1930 Mexico Census at the family Search Pilot Site
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

" Expediting" was often neccesary. My great grandmother was coming to visit
San Antonio in the late '30s and was deneied entry because she didn't have a
birth certificate. She was Scotch/English but had lived in Mexico since she
was a young child, but was born in Iowa. It took over 3 months of legal
wrangling to get her in. This when it was decided my grandfather was "born"
in Chicago. All his earlier Border crossings showed his birthplace as San
Luis Potosi. Good thing they didn't have computers then.
So my dad became Bob Edgar, not Heladio Robledo Calleja.

Good Afternoon Eric,
I have one last known living contact of my mother's Onate family, an older cousin (granddaugher of my greataunt Maria Angela Onate)that now lives out of state, but lived many years in San Antonio with Maria Angela. I email her regularly to pick her brain. She told me that like many of our antepasados, genealogy didn't mean much to her grandmother, Maria Angela, so before she died she burned all the old pictures and documents. Weird, because my mother did the same thing and they didn't really know each other. When I told my cousin about a Petra Candelas (our ggrandmother)death in SA, she also looked up the certificate online and said that was a different woman, as the birthdate was off and the death certificate was signed by a person unknown to her. So, I'm back at square one, hoping to find Del Rio/Eagle Pass border crossing info for birthyears and places on Petra Candelas, Leornarda Onate, or Luis Onate. Take care and thanks again for your help. Alice Blake

Hi Angie,
What a great idea! I was hoping someone from our group of nearly 400 would come up with some help. I'll contact it tomorrow and hopefully they do subscribe. Being so close to the border and the destination of so many that crossed, I would hope that the San Antonio library offers it. Thanks again for coming through for me. Alice Blake

Alice,

Have you tried your local public library. The library near me also has a Ancestry.com subscription. The library has access to databases: a newpaper archive, a obit archive, and Ancestry.com, plus others... You may want to try asking your local library.

Good Luck,
Angie Godina

Dear Group,
Is Ancestry.com the only way to access US/MX Border Crossing information? I've never subscribed to or had a trial subscription to Ancestry.com, but a couple of years ago my local FHC had access. They have now dropped the subscription. Thanks so much for your help. Alice Blake

Alice,

Outside of a trip to a NARA archives and browsing miles of Microfilm,
Ancestry is the only way. I have a subscription and much success searching
these. I've collected almost a hundred with my families on them. There is a
wide variety of forms, some with minimal information, some with extensive.
The quality is fair to poor. Misspellings seem to be the rule rather than
the exception.

If you give me the facts I'll look it up for you. Please include full
names, birth dates, approximate dates of crossing, destination, place of
origin, and other family members if you have them.

Jose Cayetano Gonzalez b. 9 Agosto 1827, Batch J602352, Rollo 1152476

JOSE FAUSTINO PERES GONZALES b. 28 Enero 1831

JOSE JULIAN PERES GONZALES b. 17 Febrero 1839
