Steven,

Esther,
Retoños translates to shoots or sprouts. The title of Mariano González Leal’s book, Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia, could be translated to something like, Spanish Sprouts (descendants) in New Galicia.

There might have been a newer post about someone offering copies, but this is the only conversation I found. However, I went to the library and had them ordered. I was not prepared for the size of the volume (s) some have two and they only let you have one Tomo at a time, for a limited time with no extra time given. So if you know someone close by who is also interested he/she can order them as well. together you both would have a better chance to review the volume(s).

This was a conversation about them.

Danny you can go to your public library where they will help you with information to order one of the book or books in that volume. All you need is your library card and a library who is willing to lend it to you. I had the University of Chicago, but I had to wait a long time for each volume/s. I pretty much have ordered quite a number of different other books, unfortunately not many libraries are willing to share there collections. However when you are in college we use to have a special code to get articles and books in the college library. Good Luck.

You can go to worldcat to see which places have the collection near you. You will need some of the following information to order it.

Alas,

the only copy I can find is in Southern California. The cost is $760.00.

too rich for my blood. I even contacted the author and he said to just grab that last copy.

I tried to email again but no response. A large library on www.worldcat.org is your best bet to locate a copy of the ten volume set.

Hi,
According with the book of "descubrimiento del parral" (has a glossary at the end)

2. Sebastian Altamirano de Castilla (BAPTISM - godparent of one of her kids baptized in Aguascalientes- 1677)
3. Bernabe Altamirano y Castilla (BAPTISM- godparent of one of her kids baptized in Aguascalientes- 1679)
4. Lic. Joseph de Anda (confirmation- godfather of one of her kids - Teocaltiche 1666)
5. Maria de Nava (Confirmacion- godmother of one of her kids - Teocaltiche 1666)

In none of the records there is even a clue of how they were related with her. I don't know if I'm missing a document. I know that when "her father" died didn't leave a will (juan de Anda), and I haven't been able to find the will (if any) from "her mother" (Juana Ruiz de Nava). I already verified all the confirmations for Teocaltiche or Lagos without any success

Hello and thanks for the clue. My ancestor arrived in Alta California in 1797, joined the Spanish Army and went on to become the alcalde of San Jose CA in 1821 and later (1844)obtained a Mexican land grant in the same area. He did all of this under his birth name.

Hi, Manny.

Thanks for the clue. However, my source implied that the judicial authorities would have been in Guadalajara, not Aguascalientes. I tried a search, but could not select Guadalajara as an option. In your experience, has Aguascalientes ever been considered to be a part of Guadalajara (possibly as a "suburb")?

You may start off by gathering as much information as you can on him.

The names of his wife /wives, siblings, and children. Dates and locations to go with each name wherever possible. Any information that specifically identifies him. The records of his children and his siblings may provide valuable clues on how to proceed with your research

Just curious. Did you ever corral a group of volunteers?

well the colotlan records available on family search are partially indexed. what would be awesome if familysearch were to acquire/digitize more records from that city. i'd love to look at pre-1720 marriage records from there.

but if you were t index the remaining unindexed record, you'd need to find which ones are and which aren't.

By starting on the oldest records available. they have not index them. They have index about 1800 going up.

My goal is to start at the oldest reference and work up to meet the index in family search.

The reason is we spend to much time looking at web links when we can help each othet indexing and finding our ancestors. optimizing every click we do in family search

My translation:
Per Canon law, persons are called "spurious" who are born out of wedlock and from parents who could not marry at the time of conception or at the time of birth, and per Roman law this denomination is given not only to those who don't have a father, but also to those who have one but cannot honestly outright name them because the father was a missionary or clergy or close family relation to the mother, or because either one or both parents were married to other people.

So there you go. Hijinks galore in Ayotlan.

Comentario

Just thinking out loud, but could it be (due to timing of the records) that in this parish, children of common-law or civil marriages were considered "naturales" (as civil marriages were becoming more of a thing yet the Church didn't recognize them as married) and children who were from parents who weren't paired up in any recognized fashion were the ones labeled "espurio/a?"

I do love the fact that the padrecitos listed not only the names of the fathers, but also the paternal grandparents! The father's name was normally left off of their "illegitimate" children's documents, leaving the mother to carry the responsibility, at least on paper. :)

Just a guess. I've also never seen that label before as Esp.a/o usually indicated non-indigenous, but by the 1800's folks were mixing pretty well.

~Sandra

Comentario

Could it be espuria, which is also another way to say illegitimate? I wasn't able to determine a difference between the two based on the use in this source.

Comentario

Espuria - illegitimate. Same as natural, expuesta and exposita. What's interesting, is that the previous entries are listed as "natural."

Manny Diez Hermosillo

Comentario

Thank you everyone for helping.

It is strange and it's the same priest writing these but uses natural and espuria and both mention both father and mother. So it must have a different meaning?

Esther

Comentario

I am reading it as espuna as well.

I am not sure of the meaning and in my limited experience reading documents I haven't seen that word before, but I will take a few guess.

1. Both H. Esp (hija espuna) and H.N. (hija natural) are both illegitimate/out of wedlock (or whatever term there is) children. When they say espuna they are meaning espanola, and when they say natural they are meaning indian/native. Kind of like records that say vecino de (insert town) or natural de (insert town).

2. Or it could mean, parents are a couple but not married and for the other parents not together.

Check other records of the people in the document to see patterns. It might help.

Meaning of "el moco" after someone's name

What is the meaning "el moco"?

I think it is like senior or junior, but am not sure.

Comentarios

Comentario

(Wikipedia)Spanish has not used the symbol since an orthographic reform in the 18th century (which replaced ç with the now-devoiced z), but it was adopted for writing other languages.
ç (lower case, upper case Ç) "c cédille", the letter c with a cedilla; Usage notes . Ç is not considered a distinct letter, but a variant of C. It is used where a c pronounced /s/ occurs before a , o or u (due to etymology or inflection).

You will see it in some of the old Spanish text MOÇO

Comentario

el mozo is junior and el viejo is senior

Typically its relative to the document you are reading so there is no answer to who el Mozo is. Most times it refers to a father/mother and son/daughter in the same document with the same name but it doesn't have to be that way. Sometimes it can be between a granparent and a grandchild or nephew uncle or similar relationship. I think the only thing you can actually be certain about when you see "el mozo" or "el viejo" is relative age.

Comentario

Moco means junior. But that doesn’t mean that when a person named el moco is the younger person in a record. In at least one document el moco referred to the older person and the younger person was referred to as “ el menor”. What happened in this case was that there were three men with the same name. The “moco’s” father was “el Viejo”.

Comentario

Of course "el mozo" would refer to the youngest of two people with the same name.

There is another possibility, an hilarious one. It could be a nickname, but I think it isn't very probable. If it were a nickname, it could be indeed "el moco" and not "el mozo".

Dear Simona,

Thank you very much for the lead. Please send me the link since I haven't been able to see where you found this info. So far what I have been able to gather is that at one time Alonso Angulo y Montesino was a treasurer at one time, and that montesino is recognized as a converso family. Alonso was the first owner of the hacienda where Miguel Hidalgo Costilla was born. Miguel's father was a foreman (administrator) of the hacienda. I am related to both Miguel Hidalgo and Alonso Angulo y Montesino. Those two also had common relatives. The family was passed down, or sold, to family members for a couple of centuries before it was finally sold outside the family. When it was sold outside the family, the new owners conspired to hide the fact that Miguel Hidalgo was born there and paid off some people to get them to state that he had been born elsewhere.

I have been unable to find information on the parents of Alonso Angulo de Montesino and Cathalina Lira. Hopefully your

Buenas Tardes,

Thank you Wesley! Those burials you mention are the only ones I have found
too, but I'm pretty sure to have seen a list of burials in the 1630's
somewhere in this forum. Hopefully someone will have more information.
Unfortunately I'm moving and my books are in boxes, perhaps some more
information appears in Arturo Ramos's book.

Mariana Marzelina De Jesus Gonzs. Gutierres

There is a record for Mariana Marzelina De Jesus Gonzalez Gutierres in Book 221423, Lagos de Moreno. She has a baptism date of 4 junio 1801. I cannot find the record - I have looked at all of 1801.

Thank you for sharing this !

I always think of the struggles they must have endured, even as we have struggles of our own in our modern world, I feel like we have so much to be thankful for...

Thank you for sharing your uncles list of abuelos (I will keep it handy). What he states is what I would imagine my maternal abuela would say as she was the generation in the struggle for independence, Cristero War, etc.

If it wasn’t for our ancestors marrying near and distant relatives then

But in Los Altos de Jalisco family often married family, that is why so many marriage dispensations were required. My Father is a third cousin of my maternal grandmother, my maternal maternal great great grandparents were second cousins twice, my wife and I are fifth cousins. i descend from Josesito Martin’s del campo seven times through the marriages of his descendants. My wife descends from Josesito Martin del Campo twice.I could go on and on.

My research shows that many of the first settlers in Los Altos de Jalisco descended from common ancestors in Spain. So my family tree over 25 generations expands, condenses, expands again, condenses again repeatedly.

That is very tree. I really didn't pay too much attention to the numbers though as my family intermarried a lot as well. My maternal great grandparents were first cousins, and my great great grandparents were related as well (I just don't understand how to determine the degree). I joke often about how my mothers family tree looks more like a bonsai tree.

But in reference to my original post I liked the part about imagining what our ancestors must have lived; and how if it were not for their existence, I might not be here today.

By the way thanks for the help with my father's side of the tree. I was able to expand a few more generations.
