Yes, they are a group from Mexico DF/Jalostotitlan that have funded many books relating to Los Altos de Jalisco. I believe the group is made of Gutierrez brothers from the Media Hanega Ranch in the Municipio of Jalos.

My experience is that a different spelling of a name, by itself, has no significance in identifying a family or individual.

Over twenty years doing genealogy research has made it clear to me that until the early twentieth century, there was almost no "standard" spelling. I have encountered many spelling variations for even simple names, sometimes within the same record for the same person. Lack of education, "phonetic" spelling, miscopying poor or nearly illegible handwriting, and just plain errors all contribute to the diversity of spelling.

In Jalisco records, I've found my surname not only as PAREDES but also as PAREDEZ, PREDES, PADERES, and PADEREZ, plus other variations I may have forgotten. The name got mangled as much or more in Texas records: my GGF's 1899 marriage record lists him as Juan PADUEZ. PAREDES was even misspelled on my high school diploma. Even today, misteaks happpen.

Hi Joseph,

Like my cousin Linda, I believe the priest made the choices. I would think priest would
have gone through grammer school but again with all the changes to Castilian over
the centuries. The Portuguese form is Pires a bit different. MOst people did not
see the church records only those who would try to "get into something"; court,
job, college or notary records. There are many documents that when we are lucky
we can see their signature.

I think the scribe made the choice, I have cousins who are siblings, one who's
parents went by the census Rebeles and the rest of the family is Reveles. I
would appear most of our ancestors never saw the records and many could not read
or write so had no idea of the changes from C to Z and S to Z and visa versa
through the years.  I also see the changes in the name Morillo/Murillo, many of
these records especially as witness say they cannot sign because they cannot
read or write.

just my opinion,

One of the axioms of genealogy is: Spelling doesn't count!

I would not take today's rules and norms of spelling and apply them to documents of 200 years ago.

As books became more widely available, as well as dictionaries, spelling became more standardized. The first English dictionary is Robert Cawdrey's work of 1604. This was most likely not widely available, and certainly not used by the common people. There are many words in this dictionary that we would consider misspelled today. Usage varied significantly from what we do today. For example, U was not used at the beginnings of words, instead V.

The first Spanish dictionary was published in 1611 by Sebastian de Covarrubias. Other authoritative publications came from the Real Academia Espanola (founded in the early 1700) in the 1740s and later.

Getting back to names, I have seen the same name spelled two different ways in the same document, and obviously written by the same person.

Hello Joseph and George,

Since this is dealing more with orthography than definitions, for which a
dictionary would be used, the first book of Spanish orthography was written
by Antonio de Nebrija in 1517. He also wrote *Gramatica Castellana* in 1492
which includes a chapter on the letters and pronunciations in Spanish and
another on the general rules of orthography of Spanish. The full text
of *Gramatica
Castellana* can be found at http://www.antoniodenebrija.org/indice.html

Even so Spanish wasn't widely standardized until fairly recently and
mispellings continue to this day, especially for surnames. We still use
Valadez while the correct spelling is Valadés and Rubalcava when the
accepted spelling in Spain is Robalcaba. Also many of the surnames that
should end in -ez, not just Pérez, were spelled ambiguously with -es in the
past. This also happened in Spain as I learned when researching my ancestors
there. The z/s aren't the only letters that were used ambiguously. The
letters b/v

Thanks for this link. Your information significantly pre-dates what I found.

The point I was trying to make (and didn't do it too well), is that the availability of printed materials did much to standardize language, both from the standpoints of grammar and spelling.

One of the other points made by some of the sources I looked at is that in some areas different letters or combinations of letters may represent the same sound. Hence, the letters are used interchangeably.

Evolution of a language is a fascinating study.

I took a quick look in Family Search, and did not find much, either. I found no references to Jerez, but I also noted in the FHL card catalog there are gaps in the church records. This could account for the missing info. The Jerez records are online.

I did note, however, some records for the families Valdes-Muro and Valdes-Varela in Tepetongo, a town not too far from Jerez. Films for this town are online.

Have you verified the marriage info with the matrimonial investigation? This may clear up the apparent discrepancy.

Could there be two Tomas Valdes's?

If you have the IGI batch numbers, you can search the IGI with less information (just a father's last name, for example). This is for the old Family Search site, and not the new one. Some are available at http://mexicoigibatchnumbers.wetpaint.com/ If your local Family History Library still has the "Parish and Vital Records List" (or index) microfiche, it will have a more complete list. I have Valdés and Muro in my family tree, and what I can tell you is that even when some records appear in Jerez they may come from places sorrounding, it is because in ancient times not all the towns had a parrish, so the people had to go to the next parrish for baptism or marriage. The last name Valdés is pretty common in the area as well as Muro, and you can find two different person with the same name, in this case Tomas Valdés.
I recomend you to find brothers of Tomas, then you may find more information about their parents.
Can you give me the link in wich films can be seen online?

You can try the Historical Archives of SEDENA (Mexico's Military branch).I went there today and I'm very pleased with what I found.
First you have to e-mail them to archivo@mail.sedena.gob.mx and ask them if they have the files for the person you are looking for. It is better to have the exact date the person joined the military (antigüedad).
I requested to check out the records of 7 brothers and cousins of my grandfather, they all fought in the Mexican Revolution. They found the records for 3 of them (for those for which I had their antigüedad) and gave me permission to see their records.
Today I could only check one of the three since his archive is 488 pages long.
They allow you to take digital pictures of the records (no flash), so I spent all morning photographing his files. I'll try to read all of them later.
I also tried their online archives but didn't find anything at all there.
I'll go back tomorrow morning (they only open from 8:00 to 13:00) and check out the second set of

For those who have found military records for ancestors from Zacatecas, were there any particular military units which recruited members from Zacatecas?

There might have been several raised during the 19th century, but the easiest ones to find are national guard regiments. Although even then, it is hard to know which particular units recruited in certain area's of the state.

Daniel,

RecordSearch has it wrong. I'm looking at Bartolomé Ruiz de Esparza's
marriage information, filed in Aguascalientes on 17 April 1731, which begins
as follows:

"Bartholo de Esparza Español vecino de este partido en el Soyatal hijo
legitimo de Manuel de Esparza y Ana de Montañes en la forma que mejor
proseda de... paresco ante Vmd. y digo que tengo tratado y consertado
matrimonio con Petra Garcia mestisa vecina del partido de Cienega de Mata
hija legitima de Antonio Garcia difunto y de Nicolasa Lopes... etc. etc."
On the same page there is a note that says that they were married in Cienega
de Mata "de licentia parrochi" on 7 May 1731.

This is not the first time this type of error is found using RecordSearch.
Therefore, I suggest that all information provided to the group should be
verified against the original source before it gets diseminated, making it
more difficult to correct.

I appreciate the information both of you have shared. As I'm somewhat new to this, can you please clarify for me whether "Ruiz de Esparza" is a single surname? In the 1787 Ciénega de Mata marriage record of José Gregorio PAREDES and Maria Ynes ESPARZA, her surname is written as simply ESPARZA, while her father is listed as Nicolas de ESPARZA.

More LDS microfilms from Ciénega de Mata are now on order to see if they have any additional data and to verify the extracted information. I've had other experiences with the LDS site data being wrong, but despite that it's a great resource.

FYI, I have three films from Ciénega de Mata on permanent loan here locally and will gladly do lookups:

640151 - Baptisms 1747-1766

640168 - Marriage Info 1699-1719

640181 - Marriage Info 1786-1788

On order are:

640149 & 640150 - Baptisms 1670 - 1747

640170 - Marriage Info 1727-1737

I have not found any marriage for your Diego, but I can tell you that Cayetano was married twice:

1) Juana de Rubalcava, who died c. 1732
2) Ana Lugarda Vazquez de Mercado - married 15 Feb 1733 in Nochistlan
Note on this 2nd marriage: Ana Lugarda was Diego (III)'s son-in-law's sister [in other words: Ana Lugarda was sister to my Nicolas Vazquez de Mercado above, who married Eusebia, your potential Diego's sister!!]

I also descend from Diego's second marriage to Ana Lugarda, so I have collected all the names on this family that have been indexed. I have not researched the Cuquio films yet, but maybe you and I can put two-and-two together and I can help you confirm your suspicion.

For Cayetano Ruiz and Juana Rubalcaba:

1) I also have:
-Jose Santiago, bap 30 Jul 1728 in Cuquio, m. Maria Salome Loza 28 Jun 1751

-Maria m. Nicolas Mercado 18 Jan 1737 in Cuquio.
Also, I have 'Pedro Guadalupe" for Pedro and Joseph Giordan for Jordian.

2) Re dates & surnames in common of padrinos:
Gregorio Perez y Lugarda Mercado, 16 Aug 1739
Cayetano de Rubalcaba y Maria de Placensia, 31 Dec 1741
Bartolme Garcia y Antonia Yanez
Cayetano y Melchora de Rubalcaba, 4 Jan 1749
Cayetano Ruiz y Anna Mercado, 17 Apr 1750

Santiago Mercado y Manuela Esquivas 24 Jul 1760
Joseph Ruiz 20 Jul 1762
Diego Ruiz (probably an older son of my Diego) y Catharina Rubalcaba. 12 Dec

Your're right, Cayetano Ruiz and Anna Mercado appear to match. That gives
some support to my belief.

I have just posted the second installment to my key to the Aguascalientes
matrimonial investigations. This covers the period of 1700 to 1720, and
represents about 1500 marriage investigations.

The entries are in chronological order.

The file is in the Files area, under Reference Materials, Aguascalientes
Matrimonial Investigations. http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18014

This is a pdf file of 215 pages. The references are to volume and image number
as posted on Family Search.

The file can be searched using the search feature of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Spelling generally follows the spelling of the original record. For example,
Lopez could be either Lopez or Lopes. The obvious abbreviations have been
spelled out.

Hi Raquel:

I have some info on Lucas Contreras and Juana Macias Valades they
were residents in Nochistlan where they baptized several children.
Juana does appear couple times Gonzalez-Macias. So this might
be another vital clue. I do not have anyinfo beyond this point.
Were you able to find out the parents of Feliciana Alonso de los Hinojos?
I'd be interested in this if you have.

Yes, the same marriage lists Miguel Alonzo de los Ynojos and Phelipa de
Galarza as her parents. With that information, my primo, Saul Navarro. and
I have identified Feliciana's bap as 14 Dec 1713, and her sister, Juana
Franicisca's as 12 Nov 1711, both in Teocaltiche, and a son, Pedro , who
married Maria Marzela Pineda on 22 Aug, 1743, in Jala, Nayarit.

What are the dates where Lucas Contreras and Juana Macias Valades show up as
godparents? Are they identified as residents of Nochistlan?
Thanks.-Raquel Ruiz

Hi Raquel thanks for the information, i'll have to investigate this line.
Lucas de Contreras and Juana Gonzalez Macias or Macias Valades
baptized at least 3 kids in Nochistlan: Juana 9 Mar 1694,
Diego 28 Feb 1697, and Rosa Manuela 5 Jan 1700. You might
want to continue looking through mrriages in Teocaltiche
or even in Nochistlan for Lucas and Juana, and your Alonso
line.

everyone to share their skills and talents. That we may thank the LDS
church at least in doing this small thing.

Maria,

Have you looked in Nochistlan. They are so close and in earlier times, many of
the people in the surrounding areas went to Nochistlan to get married and to
register their children for baptism. Nochistlan has many Chavez and not too many
Leon's that I can recall.

I can only reply to the question re the children with multiple surnames. I
am a social worker and work with many families with the variety of ages and
surnames such as this one. The older chilidren could be younger full or
half siblings of the adults or children of Felipa from prior
relationships. The younger children could be children of the adults (or
older teens), half siblings or cousins to each other (except for the two
with Loma children, they may be full siblings). They may be "hijo
naturales" of different fathers who gave them their surnames, or "padre no
conocidos" with their mother's surnames. Sometimes they are full siblings
with different last names because the mother had split with the father
before the child was born and she was too angry at him to acknowledge him as
the father of the child, or because the father was angry at her and wouldn't
acknowledge that child. Of course, they could also be step-children of
Matias that he raised himself for some reason, orphaned

Armando,

The person that is referred to as "laguense" in some articles I found online is Matheo de Arteaga, a then well-known Doctor of Theology and Canonical law and a Jesuit priest at the time in Aguascalientes which was Zacatecas I believe. I just found his baptism record from 1739 and it says he was born in Santa Maria de los Lagos. He was born in the same place where some of my ancestors came from, Cienega de Mata. Matheo's maternal grandparents owned that place, originally a hacienda? I thought it was in Jalisco, but the boundaries of the states have changed so much over the years and I am really confused now, especially with all the places that use "Lagos" in their name.

Emilie,

Santa María de los Lagos changed it's name on April 9 1829 to Lagos de
Moreno in order to honor the insurgent Pedro Moreno González who
helped fight for independance from Spain. He was an hacendado and a
descendant of Diego Moreno de Ortega Villegas and Leonarda de Araujo y
Guerrero. San Juan de Los Lagos is named after Lagos de Moreno which
is where most of its settlers came from and is just west from the
Lagos. Ciénega de Mata is now within the municipal district of Lagos
de Moreno but at one time was one of the largest landholdings in
México covering multiple states and was owned by the RIncón-Gallardo
family. I also share ancestors, like many of us, with the
Rincón-Gallardo family. I had never heard of Mateo José de Arteaga y
Rincón Gallardo until now.

Armando,

Thank yoou so much for clarifying this business of all those "Lagos". My mother was an American Native and my father was from Zacatecas with only some of his ancestors having come from Cienega de Mata, so I am unfamiliar with Jalisco.

My husband's ancestors came from Encarnacion de Diaz, or were baptized there, but some of those records indicate they lived in a place called "Santa Maria" (no Lagos mentioned). They themselves (his grandfather and great-grandfather) always claimed they were born in Encarnacion. Others of his ancestors did come from San Juan de los Lagos, Lagos de Moreno, Santa Barbara, San Matias, Colotlan, Ayo el Chico, Atotonilco, Mariquita, Canada de Agustin, Tlaltenango, and way, way back from Aguascalientes and Rincon de Romos.

Since my husband's ancestors immigrated to the States in the late 1800s, he was unaware, as I was, of the term "laguense". The majority of my husband's ancestors came from Lagos de Moreno, so I will now tell him that he

I am happy I was able to help. You might tell your husband it is also
a very rare term. Out of all the places in the world I believe Lagos
de Moreno is the only one that uses the term laguense, so you can tell
your husband he is special in this regard. Encarnación de Díaz is
close to Lagos and was founded 97 years after Lagos in 1760.
Aguascalientes was founded shortly after Lagos in 1575 and is only
about an hour away. Once I have a chance I'll read up on Matheo de
Arteaga.

Un saludo

I just found the baptism record for the person described as a "laguense". He was born in Santa Maria de Los Lagos, so I guess there were several communities that were "Lagos de" or "de los Lagos".

Emilie,
Tiempo prohibido would be during Lent where this was a sacred and holy time ,
marriages were typically not conducted during Lent in the Catholic Church.

Thank you Armando and Alicia for your responses.

Alicia, is there another "tiempo prohibido" besides Lent? I looked at the date of the marriage and it says what looks to be contradictory---in the beginning it says "Casado y velado.....en Jerez el 16 de diciembre de 1739....." Then at the end it says "no fueron velados por ser tiempo prohibido". Did the priest mean to say that they were only "casados" and not also "velados"? Is December a holy time for the whole month because of Christmas? I thought Christmastime in Mexico was Dec. 25 to Jan 6, no? The 12 days of Christmas?

Thanks,

Emilie,

Another time that could have been tiempo prohibido was during advent, the 4
weeks leading up to Christimas. They would most likely marry them privately but
not announce the wedding bans and of course this was all subject to the rules of
that particular era in the church. Things most likely changed from time to time.

Thank you so much Alicia. My husband just told me that back in those days, the Church was the State and had laws that covered all activities. The Revolution and the Cristero wars changed all that.

The marriage date was 1739, December 16, in Jerez, time which Alicia told me was Advent (before Christmas) where they would not have had a "velado" but they were "casados".
