Here is the first installment of my transcriptions (more properly
"Interpretations") of christening records of Ags. This group of
records begins with christenings from la hacienda de Santiago de
Guadalupe, feligresía de la Villa de Aguascalientes, beginning in
1726. They are the first christening records of the area. (Prior to
1726 they were recorded in the Aguascalientes Sagrario volumes, going
back to about 1601.) Some of these are specifically marked Labor de
Santiago, but most are Hazienda de Santiago. Some of the baptisms were
apparently performed in San José de Gracia (usually written San
Joseph), or Paredes (sometimes written Paderes), or Pabellón, or a few
other places, as noted. Often the origin (birthplace) of the child is
given also, and sometimes the age. Most of the records also give the
caste or race designation, which I have found does not always agree
with the race recorded when the same children got married.

This project is a learn-as-you-go exercise, so the quality

Stuart,

Thank you very much for sharing your transcriptions with us. My
ggg-grandparents Francisco Ruiz de Esparza and Gertrudis Escobedo married at
the chapel of Hda. de San Blas del Pabellón on 16 Feb 1803. Most of their
children born between 1803-1833 were baptized at either San Blas del
Pabellón or Rincón de Romos, including my gg-grandmother María del Refugio
Ruiz de Esparza, baptized 18 Jan 1819 at the chapel of Rincón de Romos
(ayuda de parroquia de San José de Gracia). I've done extensive research on
this line but look forward to discover new relatives in this area. Your
transcriptions will be very helpful. Incidentally, I visited the new San
José de Gracia, Rincón de Romos, the ex-hacienda de San Blas del Pabellón in
2006. The old village of San José de Gracia is now at the bottom of a lake
formed when the Calles dam was built in 1927. The towers of the church were
visible above the surface for many years, but they finally toppled over in
the early 1990s

Hello Bill,

I am very interested in the history and location and identification of
places in this part of Mexico. I have spent considerable effort
attempting to identify placenames, with some success and of course
some frustration -- too bad they didn't have google earth back in the
1700's! I would like to see those pictures.

Thank you so much Stuart for your interpretations! I too have been combing through these records on line. My areas of interest have mainly been Garabato and some Santiago in Aguascalientes. Here are a couple of notes that I jotted down concerning the Rincon de Romos Baptismals from 1726-1762: Years 1752 to 1755 seems to pick up for areas of interest under Aguascalientes/Sagrario/Baptismals/1752-1755. Beyond the 1726-1762 scope, Santiago seems to pick up at Asientos/Nuestra Senora de Belen (includes San Blas de Pavellon)/Baptismals 1765-1769. Dates for this section are 02/23/1764 to 04/17/1769 40 pages total. I hope this helps.

Also when you or anyone in the group get to the on-line records for marriages for these areas in Aguascalientes, there are marriges that are missing from Rincon/San Jose de Gracia/Marriages 1798-1824. The time frame of 02/26/1805 to 1203/1811 are missing. I stumbled across these records (1805-1811) under Rincon/San Jose de Gracia/Marriages 1824-1829

Hello rudy,

Thank you. I've pasted your notes in a place where I'll find them when
I look at those sources.

Also note that the images for MARRIAGES from 1601-1662 in
Aguascalientes/Sagrario are found under the first group of BAPTISMS
for that area. The baptisms and marriages were bound in one volume,
but the filmers (or the indexers) apparently didn't notice: the
marriages begin with image 226.

My research in Aguascalientes (primarily San José de Gracia and Rincón
de Romos) has led me to begin transcribing some of the images. I am
doing this currently with Christening records from 1729-1763. I
consider these to be "interpretations" of original records, because of
necessity (and experience) I am doing a lot of interpreting what I
see, such as expanding known abbreviations, supplying missing letters
based on my familiarity with the names and places of the area,
"interpreting" hard-to-read handwriting, etc. I believe these
interpretations are accurate. I am interpreting each and every record,
skipping none.

A typical interpretation from Santiago de Guadalupe reads something
like this:

"En la Hazienda de Santiago feligresia de la Villa de Aguascalientes
en veynte y seis de Agosto 1736 ... Maria de Guadalupe, india
originaria de el Pueblo de San Joseph hija legitima de Salbador
Gonzales y Angela Gertrudis vezinos de dicho pueblo, fueron sus

Look at these baptisms in San Miguel del Alto. They all have a father Manuel GAMA or GAMES and a mother Felipa NERIS, RAMIRES or RAMOS (probably all the same couple):

Gender: Male Christening: 08 JUN 1835 San Miguel El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico
MA. GERONIMA GAMES RAMIRES - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 07 OCT 1832 San Miguel El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico

Rosie:

Apparently you have already found the marriage record for your grandparents in the IGI on familysearch.org:

YSABEL GAMA
Marriages:
Spouse: RAMONA MUNOS Family
Marriage: 01 JUN 1879 San Miguel El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico
Batch No.: M603304 Film No. 0279454

That record should list the names of Ysabel's parents as well as his age which will provide valuable information. You should go to a family history center and order the film or write the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and request a printout of the particular record.

Comment

Rosie:

In the GEDCOM database, when you find a record, right next to the individual or family number is the name of the tree the record belongs to. You will notice that the record you found is in Linda Castanon-Long's tree, as she mentions in her response.

Given that Linda's Felipa was born in 1830 and you are saying that your great grandmother was married in 1830, these two women cannot be the same person. Or am I misunderstanding your information?

The genealogy that you have posted in your file folder does not have any dates or place names for Felipa so it is difficult to follow.

Have you tried searching for the marriages and births of the people whose names you have using the Films tab of the website? If you know the towns where they came from you can do searches by IGI or VRI batch where you can enter minimal information, i.e. just surnames of parents and see if there are any matches.

Comment

Felipa Ramirez was probably born around 1830s and got married in the 1850s in order for her son, Jose Ysabel Gama to be married in 1879 to Ramona Munoz (had children as early as 1871 before their marriage). Assuming Jose Ysabel was 20 or so when his first child was born in 1871.

Saludos.

Hi Rosie, the file is either Daniel or me since we are family.  I have my records posted on Rootsweb.com and it might be easier for you to read them there.  I don't have a spouse for Maria Felipa and we are not directly related.. Someone in her family married someone in my family.

I would suggest you print this if you are not familiar with Rootsweb.com

You can find her ancestors by going to Family tree in the tool bar at the top of the page, click on it.

Where it says "jump to a specific data base" put in Mexico

this will give you my index, put in Ramirez and then it will give you "advanced search" put in Ramirez, Maria Felipa 1830 and she will appear.

Click on her name then click on "Pedigree" then click on "display pedigree in text form"

Click on any name and it will give you whatever source information I have.

This will give you all the information I have on this family line.  Daniel may have taken it back too since I see there is Ornelas and Campos de Anda in her line

Thank you, Linda. I see everybody so professional and knowledgeable. I just started a few months ago. I will follow your instructions to check rootsweb.

find no match with any of my lines, perhaps you have something about
Catharina Peña that married Gregorio Medina Brambila around 1787 or Felipa

Ramon del Refugio Medina Michel around 1850 they all are from Tecolotlan.
And from Cd. Guzman Lucia González Guerra, daughter of Salvador Gonzalez

Patty,

In a way, it is your research. And pretty much for each ranchos member, who I have given suggestions to.

I look at the information, you all have uploaded to the Ranchos site, in your member's file and even the messages, that you all have sent. I take that data, and go through it and create a PAF file from it.

Then once I have created the PAF file, I start playing (what others call researching) with the information. I just apply the different research strategies, that I have learned over the years. Lots of times, I find additional information, and other times I don't.

So basically, it was your research, until I played with it today. And now it is yours again.

In fact, if anyone in the Ranchos group, would like me to take a look at their information, and see if I can find anything or can make some suggestions, feel free to contact me.

As many of you know, I have had a part-time genealogy research business, for a few years now. So some you may be wondering if I will

You are one of the many jewels of Nuestros Ranchos. We are blessed to have so many kind and giving members. You are one of those who gives and gives without expecting anything in return.

I am truly fortunate to belong to such a group and hope that someday I may know enough about Genealogy that I can impart some of what I've learned with those who are just beginning.

Thank You Jonathan and thanks to all of the world class researchers.

Introduction:Maria Gonzalez

Hello everyone, my name is Maria Gonzalez. I have been searching for my ancestros for a few years now. The majority of my family come from San Jose de Ojuelos and Cienega de Mata, Jal.

Comment

Maria,
Several members of the group descend from the same Macias-Valades line. Juan Macias-Valades was son of Joseph Macias Valades and Catalina de la Vega. I guess you must know that Juan married Juana Domingues (I got information on the Dominguez and Alonso de los Hinojos if you are interested). Sebastian Macias as you may know married Juana Gonzalez de Hermosillo daughter of Diego Alonso Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Juana Aldrete. We got lot of information on the Gonzalez Hermosillo line. Also you may know that from Juana Aldrete you will be connected to the Petronila Moctezuma line (reportedly the great-great grandaughter of Moctezuma II Aztec Emperor). Pedro Nolasco Macias married Maria de los Remedios (de los Reyes) Aranda. I have some information on the Martin Sotoymayor family of Maria. I have information on many of their children, including Manuel Ygnacio and his brother Jose Miguel (my family line). I will be happy to exchange information with you.

Sincerely

Jaime Alvarado

Comment

Hello Jaime
I am in awe with all this information. I did have the names of Juana's parents Juan Hernandez and Ana Domingues de los Hinojos but I haven't researched the films with Juana Domingues birth date. I have it as 11 Apr 1665 Ags. Is that what you have?
I do have a photocopy of Sevastian Macias-Valades and Juana Hermosillo marriage on 6 July 1710 from the LDS library. I still have to verify on the birth date of Juana Alderte, the date I have of her christening is 10 Jan 1689. Do you have the same? I had no idea about the connection of Juana Alderte to Moctezuma II. How did you find it? Is it in the LDS films? Do you any books that you might recommend for research? For the children of Pedro Nolasco Macias and Ma Remedioz Aranda I have,
Manuel Ygnacio (?1750); Francisco Antonio (?); Joseph de la Trinidad, b.16 Jan 1746; Juan Antonio c.20 Jan 1748; Ma. Antonia Theodora (?). Well that's all I have at the moment. Thank you for sharing. I hope to communicate further.
Sincerely

HI María, Im glad we have a new member to our great group, we are already related, I also descend from the Macías-Valadés like many alteños here. Juan was married 12 jun 1693 in Aguascalientes to Juana Gómez de Espejo, we were actually talking about this not too long ago. Well I can send what I have tomorrow, Juan was son of José de M. y V.

and Catalina Tavera de la Vega (aka: Rubio) (we can give an entire explanation as to the AKA's for many Spanish people of the time) People could have used any numerous last names. Juana Gómez de Espejo was daughter of Juan Hernández y Gamiño and Ana Domínguez, I believe Juana used her grandmother's name, if im not mistaken, I can check. *Note Juana did not use her father's name but her grandmother. Ill send you a file with all my stuff starting with Pedro Nolasco, Im mostly useful and helpful within the 1500s-late 1700's. I have a huge alteño family database so I can try helping you with other lines If you'd like, I dont want to keep all this stuff

Hi Daniel, thanks for the information. Can you direct me where to start reading up on the explanation as to why and how the Spanish people would use AKA's. I would like to read up on the states of Jalisco and Aguascalientes. Thanks again, M Gonzalez

Im glad it helps, Im not sure where or if there is such a book about specifially the AKA. I know Retoñs just explain where each person got the AKA. "El apellido que utilizó por su abuela..something typical youd read. Well to get to he point, before the indepndence of Spanish America, there were no rules of surnames, not even the typical father mother combo. Until the Borbón Reforms it was placed. Take this family Rodrigo Olivares and María Hurtado de Mendoza, hey had Catalina, Francisca and Isbael Hurtado de Mendoza and Bernabé Olivares, notice all daughters take mother's name. Isabel is named after her grandmother the GREAT isabel I Hurtado de Mendoza. Many Ranchos members can trace to her several times. I trace to her on 12 different time, alteños intermarried too Much. LOL. Also the children could take which ever side was more important or prominant. If both were of equal, then they could combine last names. The original Hurtado de Mendoza broke into about 7 different families all

Tecnically its legal I just cant sell it or profit from it.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. María Tavera also used María Rubio y Godínez, dont know where the last part comes in?, just like Leonor Rubio's grandmother. Rubio passed maternally. Daniel,
I have reviewed the baptism registry for Bartolome Martin.  Source 0227520, Batch J605093, Dates 1544-1608, Sagrario Metropolitano.  It is dated September 11, 1567.  Father: Pablo Martin, Mother: Maria de Campos: Padrinos: Antonio Perez y su mujer Leonor Marquez.  In the same film I found Maria Martin dated July 23 1573.  It is too hard to read the rest of the entry on Maria but I can see that the parents are also Pablo Martin and Maria de Campos.  My guess, without further investigation, is that Bartolome Martin and Bartolome Martin del Campo are the same.  I tried to attach it to an earlier message, but was unsuccessful.  I also tried to download it through "Create Content."  If you do not already have it, I can e-mail it to you directly.

DNA, Backbone SNP TEST

Dear Nuestros Ranchos members,

I have a question regarding our recent DNA sample submitted to Family Tree DNA. We submitted a sample and have received the MTDNA, for HVR1 and HVR2.

Comments

Comment

Yes, 1 of 4 different samples (four different male lines) came back with a
need for SNP testing after they had already run two samples. My
understanding is that they did not have enough close matches in their bank
of data to clearly define the haplogroup. In that case it ended up to be
Haplogroup Q, but with no matches thus far. I have found the staff there
very willing to explain the issues involved, so call or email them. One
time I had to wait several days for a call-back, but it came.

Alicia,

I had My Y DNA at Family Tree. Due to the unlikely result they did a
Backbone SNP that they did not charge me for. I recall that part of
this test is to rule out other haplogroups. Although records show my
paternal line originates in San Luis Potosi, the actual origin showed
Haplogroup O, originating in South Asia, probably the Phillipines.
This is not found in the native American population.

I'd be curious to hear the result of your brother's test

They indicated they could not predict his haplogroup therefore they will be running his DNA sample through what they call Backbone SNP. Have any of you experienced this? Is this common or is this an anomaly?

Thanks Eric,

That's good to know, I'll let everyone know the outcome of the Backbone SNP test when we receive the results.

Have a good holiday everyone, and let's not forget to remember and give thanks for our war veterans.

Alicia,
San Jose, Calif
