No I wouldn't be in favor of another bulletin board. Its either this one
or another one. I would not be opposed to handing the reigns of this
group over to others. This group is not about me but us. As long as the
group stays intact it makes no difference to me if its at Yahoo or some
other site or if I'm the moderator or an active member.

I don't have the time or knowledge to know or learn how to seamlessly
make the transition. If there is enough feedback from the group we can
do a poll of the membership to see how many would be in favor of
pursuing such a plan.

The bulletin board would be in lieu of this one. If we wanted ad
revenue at least, we would have to get a fair amount of traffic on
the board and I don't think that the database alone would generate
that.

Plus most bulletin board software allows more flexibility as far as
what sort of notifications you get (i.e. limited to certain topics)
and to view messages on the same basis, to show only unread messages,
etc.

I volunteer to set up the site with the interactive family tree
software I have on my site currently and to include a bulletin board
system that we can use similar to this list.

We would need to either get small donations to cover a cost of about
$150 a year for hosting or try to make that money back through
advertising on the site... We can get Google ads on the site and as
long as people click through on the ads enough, we will probably be
able to make back the cost (depending on how many users there are and
how often people go on the site).

My cost estimate is for a hosting package that would give us 3GB of
storage. People could upload files in addition to their GEDCOMs.
All of the family information would be searchable by name, place,
etc. and could be searchable on a tree-specific basis or the entire
database could be searched at once. Of course these functions would
only be available for registered members. How many are there?

yes yes yes, if about 5-10 people would take and open up a site like
yours then I could reopen the main files area for everyone to use as
they please. Actually we could completely clear out the genealogies and
put them all in the links area of the group if everyone just made a
website for themselves.

Special request for data from Jalostotitlan

Thanks to all who are able to help me out.  I wanted to make sure I was VERY specific about which records I needed.  What I should have done was provide the specific microfilm I was referring to.

The records I need are only from Jalostotitlan, NOT in San Miguel el Alto.  I have also done research in both towns, but more in San Miguel el Alto, so I already have a lot of San Miguel el Alto.  The records I need are not in San Miguel el Alto, they are in Jalos.

So, does anybody out there have this microfilm:

Jalostotitlan, Jalisco--Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1806-1815 -  FHL INTL Film [ 0279264 ]

This one has the key information for one of Santo Toribio Romo's ancestral lines.  Once I complete his pedigree, I'll research his life and integrate his genealogy into an interesting article.  And of course I'll make sure to share it on Ranchos.

Sincerely,

Steven H.

Special request for data from Jalostotitlan

The only information that I have is what I
have read in some of the Jalos Web sites.  You probably already have
it, I know it isn't much, but I hope it will help:

Padre Toribio had two brothers and a sister:
Roman, Francisco, and Maria

Francisco had daughter named Margarita Romo
Enriquez.

Padre Toribio has a niece, Doña Juanita
Romo.  She owns one of the stores  that caters to the visitors to the
shrine.

Hello Steven,

Unfortunately, I don't have any of the films you need. My
Jalostotitlan ancestry dates much farther back. Good luck on your
research and please share your findings with the Ranchos group.

Alicia:

I can't seem to figure out where the profiles section is. Can you be
a little more explicit as to how to go about changing this?

Joseph:

How much storage space are you using now with all of the Ranchos
groups and briefcase combined? How many members are there? Is
anybody storing anything more sophisticated than their GEDCOM data
that they are then transmitting in various formats (Word, PDF, etc.)

Check out my family website (I will send you the link in an email)
and see if you think this might be a possible alternative, where
people could upload their GEDCOM files (minus living individuals) and
we can simply restrict access completely to members. In addition, we
could use the bulletin board there in lieu of this group and people
can sign up for more specific areas of interest to receive email
notification, i.e. by specific geography or topic of posting, etc.

We could probably host a site like this for $10-$20 a month if the
database is not too big.

Alicia you have found the magic solution to my frustration. . .a way
for everyone to be in complete control. Either building your own
website with your genealogical data on it or putting it online at one
of the many locations where you can submit your data.

thanks,

ps: oh, and yes . . .it is a good idea to fill in your profile. Go and
see mine if you want an example of what is meant. You have have to take
a few minutes and fill in some data. {I guess the only problem is that
that profile goes with you to every group in the Yahoo system and for
their email as well}.

Hi Connie,

Welcome to Ranchos prima.  This is your cousin Steven F. Hernandez.  I trust your genealogical research is continuing at a healthy pace.  Have you been doing any work in Aguascalientes with our Muñoz de Nava, Ruiz de Esparza, Romo de Vivar, and other ancestors and descendant family?  I look forward to checking out any of your submissions to the files section of Ranchos, if Joseph allows it.  I'm sure your Ranchos cousins will appreciate it, such as Irma Gomez Lucero, Maria E. Sanchez de Cortez, Felipe Hermosillo, John Gonzalez, Maria Elena Gutierrez-Uhlenburg, and a few other alteños on Ranchos. We are all related to one another, and to you Connie.

As a side note, you should consider turning in something to the next SHHAR Genealogical Journal, Vol. 6.  I am currently in the process of editing the journal and accepting articles and submissions.  Maybe something on your research in Aguascalientes, Jalisco, or Zacatecas.  But, if you have any northern Mexico research, I will more gladly accept it for the Journal.  I am trying to expand the Journal's scope to include a wder-ranging geographical area.

Best wishes,

Tu primo

Steven Francisco Hernandez Lopez
