San Gabriel Valley Families of Nueva Galicia

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let you know I have finally published my genealogical work on my father's family from Nueva Galicia.

The Gonzales, Calvillo, Ramos, Alva, Macias and Flores families immigrated to Azusa in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles, California in the early 1900’s. These families and their descendants came from various towns in Nueva Galicia which covers the span of nearly 600 years.

I received your book in the mail yesterday. Congratulations. It is a great compilation of very valuable genealogical information.

I notice that you have Colotlan parish records listed as one of your sources and I was wondering if you could point out what branches/surnames are from Colotlan. Just curious to see if we have some common ancestors. I know that some of my Tepechitlan families must have come from Nochistlan, i.e. "Gonzalez de Yslas" etc are definitely Nochistlense names.

Hi Arturo

The San Luis Colotlan, Jalisco families are the Montoya, Banuelos and Rubalcava's. I do hope you find the book helpful. For the past 5 years this is how I conducted my research by alpha order and the more names I found, I'd pencil them in until it grew to the size it is today. Genealogy is never done so I'm sure there will be later editions down the road.

Enjoy and Thanks

okay Rose so tell us about your Banuelos. What are the details could be

ps: by the way I've been very negligent at announcing a new found cousin

I highly encourage you to try to get it distributed as far and wide as possible. I recently donated copies of my book to a number of libraries including the Los Angeles Public Library and the Library of Congress.

In addition to being a great source of pride, I think it is important that that our research get recognition and shelf space. Walking into many genealogy collections at libraries would lead to you believe that the U.S. population is all of English, Irish and German descendancy.

The Library of Congress Genealogy Reading Room dedicates a whole six inches of shelf space to Mexican genealogy.

Talk to George Farias at Borderlands Books about distributing your book. He gets orders from many libraries that collect Latino/Mexican genealogical works.

Arturo

I totally agree with you about distribution. I have The Library of Congress and Los Angeles Public Library on my list. I also donated to Sutro in San Francisco and Azusa City Library, where I was born and raised. I do have George's e-mail and have referred my cousin, John to him for his book.

We certainly do need to share our history.

Thank you for your input.

Hello Rose,

Just had to write and congratulate you, it must have been years and years of research. I will definitely purchase your book as it covers some of my areas of research, Teocaltiche, Aguascalientes and Nochistlan and some of my family surnames, Carrillo, Rubalcaba, Ruiz and Ruiz de Esparza and others.

What an accomplishment!!

I will be in touch once I purchase and read your book.

The book is a great resource. It was being sold directly by Luz Montejano Hilton for about $100 plus shipping from Mexico City.

The same records that can be found in the book can now be found online in the Matrimonios volumes at https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysea… and are being indexed at http://www.guadalajaradispensas.com/

This is a very useful resource, unfortunately it is out of print. However, it is available in some libraries.

A according to Worldcat it is available at the Arizona State Library, Phoenix, as well as the University of Arizona Library, Tucson.

Worldcat, www.worldcat.org, is a very convenient way to locate hard to find books. Many libraries, but not all, are part of this system. If you enter your Zipcode, Worldcat gives you a list of libraries beginning with the one closest to you.

Hello Tina,

Your post was never mailed out so only people that visit this thread at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/node/21546 will see the post.

There are a lot of records lost or damaged long before they started to microfilm the records so that might be why you can't find the baptism you are looking for.

Your ancestor Teresa Infante Moreno is very likely related to the Díaz-Infante family and to the Moreno de Ortega family.

The godparents of her daughter Luisa de Yepes were Bartolomé Díaz-Infante González-Soriano and María Ana de Anda Altamirano y Moreno de Ortega married 8 Jan 1708 in Lagos de Moreno.

An uncle of Bartolomé was Diego Díaz Infante Espinosa married to Teresa Moreno de Ortega Villegas 24 Nov 1651 in Lagos de Moreno.

Since Manuel Yepes and Teresa Infante Moreno had their first recorded child baptized on 24 Jan 1715 they were married the beginning in 1714 or prior to that. You should search the volumes of Información Matrimonial to see if they had a matrimonial

Since the index record at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NV5Y-3WY states that the baptismal record exists in film 218462 it has to be in the volume named Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1857-1860. There is no doubt it will be there. You need to go page by page. The dates are sometimes out of order.

Armando

Comentario

That is what I thought. I will try again. Also, in the informaciones de matrimonios, are they filled out on the same day as the marriage or prior to the marriage. This is an area I have not attempted to dive into yet but need to now.

Again, thanks so much Armando

Comentario

The información matrimonial records are usually completed about a month to a week prior to the marriage. Sometimes they exist when marriage records don't exist. Also at times marriage records contain ages of the bride and groom, the names of the parents, and three witnesses. At times information about a witness can be a clue.

Abbreviation Question: "Esp" in 1756 Jerez Baptism Record

Hello!

Comentario

Kristine,

Most of the time that records aren't digitized online it is because they were lost or damaged long before they started to microfilm them. That seems to be what happened in Jerez. That is why Katy was telling you that it is likely that your only hope is finding a dispensa that mentions your ancestors.

Also, the document you linked states that Joseph Vicente was an hijo legitimo and not hijo ilegitimo. In those days illegitimate children were called hijo natural (one parent is known or both but weren't married) or hijo de padres no conocidos (neither parent is known) and not hijo ilegitimo.

esp is an abbrebiation for espanol. in that context, it means that lineage-wise the child was supposedly white.

you can learn more about the caste system here (although there are some exceptions to the rules stated on that link. for example in jerez (and other nearby towns) people with as much as 1/4 amerindian ancestry usually got the espanol label. occasionally i've seen people whomarked as espanol, then i later found out they had 50%+ amerindian ancestry)

Thank you for the reply and the explanation.

In my family, we have always heard that we are from Spain, somewhere, but no one knows where, and now that almost all the elder generation has passed away, there is no one to ask. So this may be leading me to the right direction.

I will keep looking. The abbreviations are a bit difficult mixed with the handwriting, but I love the challenge.

I am noticing that there are some missing records for Jerez, in the 1750's, not quite sure where to look now.

Kristine

Comentario

Yes, tracing my ancestors back to 1756 right now, is absolutely fascinating. I want to continue, but now that I am getting to the point of missing records, I know it is going to get harder. But that is all a part of the challenge of genealogy, isn't it? =)

If anyone has any tips and tricks as to how to find records from Jerez, that would be great. I am going to start looking for any other children they may have had on that last record I do have and see if there are any other bits of information.

Thank you again for your help.

Wow...This is more than cool. We descend from Maria Gomez who married Felipe Arreola(great grandpa). They had my grandfather Poli Arreola. My mom says that Urbano Gomez Moreno died Nov 2 1948. She remembers that date because her brother was born on the same day. My grandpa Poli used to tell my mom that my uncle, who was born on the same day Urbano died, was a reincarnation of Urbano, and he was serious about it. Elena Curiel baptized my grandmother Guadalupe Govea. My mom and dad say that Elena lived a very very long life.

On our Gomez Moreno connection, I vaguely remember that my father once told me about Maria Gomez and Felipe Arreola. My father and I recently saw a photo on facebook of Aurelio Arreola, whom he calls uncle. He's related to you, right? I'm not so sure your date on Urbano Gomez's death is correct. I have his death certificate issued in Guadalajara that says he died on April 7, 1930. My father says he had a charcoal business in Guadalajara. One day, he was robbed and he got so upset that he died "de un coraje" as the family used to say. Do you know about this story? Indeed, my great grandmother Elena Curiel lived a long life. She was born in Atenguillo in 1900, and died in the year 2000, a month or two after the family celebrated her 100th birthday. Even though I was not there, I have some photos of the mass her children gave her for her 100th birthday.

My dads paternal great grandmother(Maria Ysabel Castillo) great grandpa Luis Antonio Castillo Bonal was baptized by Francisco Bonal and Maria Ysabel Gutierrez on 19 Jun 1775 in Zacoalco. Your great... grand parents also baptized Juan Jose Castillo Bonal 06 Feb,1779 who was Luis's brother. Their father was Francisco Castillo and their mother was Leonicia Bonal(Dionisia Bonal). Look into this and let me know what else you find. Based on your chart Gertrudis Aniceta Bonal was baptized April 17, 1765. This leads me to believe that Leonicia Bonal and Francisco Bonal were probably brothers. Luis Castillo Bonal and Maria Valdes had several sons and daughters. Mariana Castillo Valdes was one daughter that married Prudencio Valencia Anguiano. Prudencio Valencia and Mariana Castillo gave birth to a Maria Concepcion de Jesus that married into the Uribe

Yes, my father told me some stories about la hacienda El Gancho and the family Uribe Valencia. What I didn't know is that they were related to the Bonal family, and thus, related to both of us. The tree that I have on nuestrosranchos is a little bit outdated and I have found additional information. I do have your ancestor Leonicia(Dionicia)Bonal in my family file as well as her husband Francisco Castillo and her children. I did a small research on this family not long ago trying to break a wall, and I can tell you with certainty, that Dionisia is the daughter of Francisco Bonal and Ysabel Gutierrez. I haven't found Dionisia's marriage documents, but I did find her baptism record. This is what I found about this family when checking lots of records.

Francisco Bonal was originally from Zacoalco. On several documents it is stated that he's the son of "padres no conocidos". His wife Ysabel Gutierrez was from Santa Cruz in Tlajomulco and they married there on 26 Feb 1748. Here's a link to

Thank you very much, I found it. Now the problem is that I cannot read it. I can read only that Thomas Ramires was from Zapotlan and Vecino de "Zacoalco" for 4 years. I believe that Zapotlan is in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco. The confusing part is that the name if his father appears to be Antonio Rodriguez (Annt Rodrig) and not Antonio Ramires. Thomas Ramires mother was Theresa Ramires. Is "Rodrig" a mistake by the church or is " Rodrig" short for Ramires. I'm thinking this is just a simple error by the church and did not want to cross it out to correct. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18696-12042-5?cc=1874591&wc=…

I don't understand. Was he a legitimate child? Was this a common practice? Was Thomas's last name Rodriguez or was he Thomas Rodrigo. I'm going to research the marriage between T. Rodriguez and Theresa Ramires. Hope I can find somehting. By the way, really appreciate the help.

I just found this.

I believe you might be right. I am still not able to find the birth of Thomas Rodrigues(Ramires). I will keep looking, thanks for the help.

I also tried to look for the marriage between Antonio Rodriguez and Teresa Ramires 06 July 1706 using Zapotlan el Grande but the film roll(microfiche) does not go that far back. How are you finding the correct film rolls? Well at least I know that Juan Ramires and Juana de Cardenas were Teresa's parents.

Hi
quick question: Can anyone tell what the abbeviation is in front of the name "Antonio Sotelo" in the record of death for Francisco Sotelo?

There are two abbreviations, one before the name and the other after the name.

The second one is "presbitº", presbítero, a priest.

The first one looks like Gdo. which i don't know what it means. if it were instead Ldo. it could mean "licenciado".

Victoriano Navarro

Comentario

Thanks Victoriano!I am pretty sure its a G, since there is another G higher up on the page, but I havent been able find out what G.do could stand for...maybe "guardo"? as in the keeper (of something, like maybe the local church, since he was a prebítero?)

Augustin Carlos de Godoy

Hi Derdra, while researching my ancestors in Jocotepec Jalisco I ran in to an Augustin Godoy baptized April 8 1685 son of Joseph Godoy and Maria de Lipe.
There are other Godoy's.
I know it is a little before your Augustin, but you never know.
Good luck.

Hello Sylvia, I too am doing a majority of my research in Jerez and Tepetongo and can tell you that Carlos Godoy is a very common name for this area. in the 1800's I found that the Godoy was dropped from a lot of the names and they just used Carlos. I have a lot of Carlos on my tree but not an Augustin. I don't think that Lugarda is a very common name for that part of Zacatecas however.

Sorry I wasn't able to offer any information on Augustin.

Good Luck,
Barbara

Sylvia I have my files posted on Rootsweb.com but will be updating later this week.  My file name is Mexico, my root person is my Father, Chet (Aniceto) Castanon. My Mother, Dolores Gutierrez's family was from Jalisco and before that from Michoacán.  You can go to  the index to search for any names you may be looking for. I have over 99 thousand names and have barely touched Tepetongo!  Do you have your files where I can see them?

Welcome to the group, prima!

I want to welcome you to the group-- I did respond to your other message about Agustin Villegas. I just wanted to let you know that we are related through this family and through the Quesadas and Banuelos, and maybe others. This also means you are related to the founder of this group, Joseph Puentes, as he is descended from the Banuelos family.

There are many of us in the group who share this genealogy; I am sure they will introduce themselves. If you would like to compare notes between our genealogical trees, just message me through the group-- I do have Mauricio and Luisa in my tree.

Hi Juan Carlos, just wondering if the de Leon is spanish for Lyon and is it possible they are related to the Lyon branch that sailed from England and settled in Roxbury Massachusetts in the 1630's. I am a descendant of that branch of the Lyon. I can trace my line back to the year 986.
Apparently the first spelling of the name was Leuoine from Normandy (France).
Later in England it was changed to "de Lyoun" and "de Lyon" and finally around 1300's just Lyon.
Good luck in your search.

You should also upload it to Geneanet.org

I think you will find it has a nicer interface with more options, including both Spanish and English, and more people from Mexico and Spain use it.
