Huerfanos (sp)

Are there any Huerfanos in the group. . .are there any orphans that
don't have others members researching the same general area as you are
researching in Jalisco, Zacatecas or Aguascalientes? Well if you want to
invite researchers to Ranchos that are researching your specific area
let me know and I'll give you ideas.

I just went to rootsweb and did a geneal search of all the message
boards for those that are researching the Valparaiso, Zacatecas area. I
searched the first 26 pages and found 15 individuals. I then typed their
names into an email and send them an invitation to consider joining the
group. naturally if they are not serious researchers I won't let them
into the group. Of those 15 email addresses 4 were invalid, but lets see
if maybe 1 or 2 of the others might not find a serious researcher.

I said all that only to say that if you are the only one looking in your
area that is a way to find others to join you in your search. . .spend
some time on rootsweb separating the wheat from the chaff.

joseph

ps: for those in the group researching Valparaiso you can go to the
rootsweb and go to message boards and then in the search window enter
Valparaiso and then start at page 26 looking for those that appear to be
serious. You never know but you might be looking for a primo or prima.

Some interesting History

I don't know for sure, but the geneal idea was that the men were
favored. Strange how that works. you'd think that my grandmother would
have been the oposite and favored her daughters, but no she pretty much
worshipped her 6 sons and treated her two daughters as a step below. .
.which doesn't mean she didn't love them but she loved them in that
hard kind of Mexican strict kind of different measuring stick kind of
different rules for them kind of way. My aunts definitely got more
demonacos than their brothers got. . .though having said that my uncles
got really good ones too. I remember I did a whole 45 minute tape of
recording oral history from my aunt before she died that had only
stories of the reasons why differnt ones were given cuerazos.

in fact just talking about this brings back vivid memories of "el
cinto" y "la mangera."     )     or maybe     (    is more appropriate

Self introduction to Ranchos group

My name is Lorenzo Cuesta.

I was born and raised in Southern Texas (Laredo), but for the past 30
years I have lived in Sacramento, California. I have done most of my
research through the Family History Center films and their website
databases.

Though the Cuesta side of my family came from Real del Catorce, SLP
and Monterrrey N.L., most of my ancestors come from the Zacatecas and
Jalisco area.

I am researching the following surnames from Nochistlan, Zacatecas:
Ortiz, Cajero, Donlucas, Borroel, and Luis. To a lesser degree, I
also have ancestors from Nochistlan with the following surnames:
Valencia, Santillan, Sanchez, Quirarte, Sandoval, Pedroza, and
Martinez.

Some of these ancestores come from the surrounding areas:
Tepechitlan, Zac; Duranes, Zac; Ayo El Chico, Jal; and Yahualica, Jal.

Most of the family group information that I have compiled, can be
accessed from my rootsweb pages:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cuesta/cuestach2.html

I look forward to learning from the research of so many that are
focused on the same area that I am interested in.

Atentamente,

Ameca problem

Evie, Ameca in Jalisco and Amecameca in Estado de
Mexico are 2 very different locations. Most likely,
you should be looking for Ameca, Jalisco. The names,
though similar, represent to different places in 2
different states.

Some interesting History

this was sent to me by Maria Gutierrez-Uhlenburg. I introduce it to the
group to see if anyone had things they heard of through oral history
that might have been practiced in our target area of study. Let's open
it even further to say have you heard any good stories of some of our
customs?

In the story I send to the group awhile back called "Muchacha" about my
Great Grandmother Antonia Santa Maria and my grandmother Virginia Diaz
I can't help but remember that when my grandmother was born the story
went that my GG Grandmother Andrea Torres ordered that two tinas of
water be prepared when my grandmother was born. One was to have nice
toasty warm water in case the child was a boy and the other was to be
cold water in case it was a girl. Grandma Virginia got the Cold water.

what stories or customs have you heard from your relatives coming out
of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and or Aguascalientes???

bring on the oral history.

thanks Maria,

joseph

Hello Irma:

Nice to hear from you.  I am pretty ignorant of
Mexico and it's "towns", or "ranchos', as they call them?  But
the areas I know of are Momax, Tlaltenango, Totoletiche(sp?) in Zacatecas.
In Jalisco, I am not sure, but have been told that the "ranchos"  border
the states of Zacatecas and Jalisco.  One of these is an area called "El
Refugio".

Also, the "Alvarez" ancestors list is pretty
large and encompasses many surnames.  The strongest is "Campos".
I will be posting my genealogy as it is to this group and hopefully will find
some connections.  The two names you mentioned are not familiar to me,
but I will check.

I do not know why...I just know that they do.  My closest guess is
that the documents were scattered, out of order, and just jumbled

No there really is no way to distinguish...But do not be afraid to "bite

This sounds like the couple needed a dispensation to marry.  This
stuff is right up my alley, so to speak.  I am rather familiar with
marriage dispensations, where both the bride and the groom were related to one
another.

If indeed there was a dispensa, then it will be archived in the Sagrada
Mitra de Guadalajara, and all of them have been microfilmed, but none extracted
into the IGI.  These are part of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara
microfilms.  I have already ordered and researched in about 50 of them,
ranging from 1799 to 1829, but not every single year researched.  That is
my initial goal, to check out every single microfilm, because you never what you
can find in these veritable gold mines of genealogical data.

Deena, I want to help you, but you have to let me know the specifics of the
Nochistlan marriage.  Who were the contrayentes?  What date was
it?

Steven H.

Tip Of Ice Burg - was:% of Films Transcribed to IGI

Well yes a couple. We live in a wonderous time when sources for
genealogy research are plentiful. It used to be that the only way
people could do their research was by traveling to the area or
requesting info from the area via the Postal System. With the great
information we have from the LDS system our opportunities are
tremendously increased for having success in finding info in a way that
is convenient to our lifestyles. All that being said I'd like to say a
couple of things with regards to what is available via the LDS system
and outside the LDS system:

1) they have a fabulous collection of books available only at their
central location, but some are on fiche/microfilm. They do take
requests to microfilm books but this can more often than not be
unsuccessful since they need to get the authors permission before doing
so.

2) As we know they have a tremendous amount of films that have been
transcribed with the information put into the various databases: IGI,
etc.

3) they have even a greater amount of films available that have not
been transcribed so if you don't find the info on the thier webpage it
doesn't mean that its not on a films available for that area [don't
forget that even if your exact area doesn't have films available maybe
the next closest town is where your relatives took their children to be
baptized and married].

4) there is probably a very large amount of material from the
particular churches that did give permission to microfilm that didn't
get microfilmed. I might be wrong but I think I read somewhere that
primary documents [baptisms, marriages, deaths, matrimonial info,
census, confirmation both in church records and vital records] were the
emphasis of the LDS's microfilming efforts. Maybe some others can
comment on this as I might be wrong. But it seems that there was a lot
of information generated by a large congregation in 200 years and to
have all of that info microfilmed might have generated many many more
films than we see are available for each location. I said all that to
say that even if we don't find a film for that information it might not
