Hello Everyone:
I am new to the forum and am eager to research my ancestry in the Ocotlan and La Barca areas. Could you please tell me how I could research land ownership in these areas during the 18th and 19th centuries ?
Thank you,

There were many Ruy Diaz de Mendozas.
most genealogist think that they have kept track of the fathers and sons and have not confused them.
But confused we were for a long time because Catalina de la Cadena was married to one of them (Ruy Diaz de Mendoza Cervellon, Virrey de Calabria). This Ruy Diaz de Mendoza died on the way to the new world with his wife, Catalina.
The other Ruy diaz de Mendoza was still alive and genealogist would confuse him with Catalina's husband and called her a bigamist or left open the door as to whether or not we were identifying the correct Ruy Diaz de Mendoza.
this second Ruy Diaz de Mendoza was married to Catalina Arellano y Rio.
there were also a bunch of female cousins that contributed to the confusion
There were two Maria Mendozas a Magdalena Mendoza, a Marina Mendoza and Juana Ramirez de Arellano that were all related
Juana Ramirez de Arellano was Hernendo Cortez's second wife, Magdalena mendoza married to Vicente Zaldivar de onate, One Maria de Mendoza was married to Ircio, the other Maria de Mendoza was married to Luis Marin were all cousins with the nearest relationship being through their Arellano lines and not the Mendoza lines. Mariana Mendoza was the daughter of Luis Marin and the second Maria Mendoza
what added even more to the confusion was that Mariana Mendoza was married to Juan Zaldivar. their daughter, Mariana Mendoza Zaldivar (last names inverted at times) was married in her 2nd marriage to baltazar Temino de Banuelos(1)
this family also created a lot of confusion with numerous Diego's and Baltazar Temino de Banuelos
Juan and Vicente Zaldivar had another brother named Diego Diaz De Zaldivar
Mariana's father in law was Diego Temino de Banuelos (1)
Mariana Mendoza Zaldivar and Baltazar had a son they named Diego Temino de Banuelos(2)
Diego (2) had many children, naming one of them Diego de Temino de Banuelos(3) and another Baltazar Temino de Banuelos (2)
All of these diego and baltazar temino de banuelos explain why I would get confused trying to connect the de la torre family to the right temino de banuelos with some documents listing One as a grandfather while others stating father
These last Diego and Baltazar had a sister by the name of Maria de Banuelos married to Francisco Figueroa de Carbajal who had a daughter named Angela de Figueroa y Banuelos
I hope this post helps someone in their research.
I am stuck on the parents of Giuomar "Mayor" de Cervellon, the wife of Ruy diaz de Mendoza Mendoza Virrey de Calabria, and hope that someone else has information on them.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18570-65953-5?cc=1874591&wc=…

I have been researching for about 2 years and have hit a brick wall. My 6x great grandfather was Blas Esteban Franco who married Margarita Liberata de Aiola Ramires on 08 Oct. 1736 in Tepatitlan, Jalisco. Below is the link to their marriage record. The record is found in the upper left hand side of the page.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18570-65953-5?cc=1874591&wc=…
In the marriage record it states that Pedro Franco and Micaela Baeza were Blas Esteban's parents. I haven't been able to find any information on the parents so that is were my road ends. I was able to get a hold of the book Retonos de Espana en la Nueva Galicia by Don Mariano Gonzalez-Leal. I wasn't able to find any mention of my family line in the chapter about the Franco family. I know that one of the patriarchs was Pedro Franco de Paredes and that he had an illegitimate son who he named Pedro. Could this Pedro be my 7x great-grandfather or could he be a link to my family?
If anybody has researched this family and can give me any information, please let me know. I am so thankful for this forum and for the many members who help the novice researchers like myself. Again thank you.

Very important concepts to know when searching catholic parish records, from the Facebook page Evidence Explained:
Consanguinity and Affinity:
We see the words often in religious records of the past and occasionally in civil ones. The concept of consanguinity--a blood relationship--is simple enough; but modern thinking often leads us astray where affinity is concerned. In civil records especially, we see references to "my brother" and other stated kinships that are hard to support by documentary evidence.
A deeper look at the historical meaning of the term can help our analyses. We borrow here from the online CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01178a.htm).
"Affinity (in Canon Law)
"A relationship arising from the carnal intercourse of a man and a woman, sufficient for the generation of children, whereby the man becomes related to the woman's blood-relatives and the woman to the man's. I... Today affinity does not beget affinity. Therefore the relatives of the man do not become relatives of the woman's relatives, neither do those of the woman become relatives of the man's relatives. ...
"The motive for the impediment of affinity is akin to, though not as strong as, that of consanguinity; there arises ... a nearness and natural intimacy with the blood-relatives of the other side. The degrees of affinity are determined by the same rule as the degree of blood-relationship."
The essay offers considerably more insight. It's well worth reading.

I've come across a notation under the Padres title that I don't know what it means. It looks like w enclosed in a circle. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks

Dear Nuestros Rancheros members,
I am pleased to become a member of this research group, and I appreciate in advance any assistance you can offer. A special thanks to Joseph for hosting.
I am finally getting around to researching my great-grandmother’s parents (my nana’s mother)—YSIDRO CRUZ (son of Abraham Cruz and Romualda Montejano) from the four corners--San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Zacateas--and REGINA LOPEZ who I know absolutely nothing about. Ysidro Cruz and Regina Cruz (not his first spouse) married sometime after 1884 most likely in Mexico. The family moved to El Paso, Texas by about 1888.
I am determined to find out more about Regina Lopez and to dig deeper into the ancestry of Ysidro Cruz.
Also, I live in Thousand Oaks, California, but I am originally from Santa Barbara. I have access to the Santa Barbara Mission Archive Library--I visit about once a month if anyone needs a quick look-up.
Thank you,

Richard,
The ascendency of Diego Alonso Gonzalez de Hermosillo has been reviewed before in Nuestros Ranchos. Go to forum topic: Massias (Macias) Valades con De Hermosillo de Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos ) . In a nutshell, there was debate whether Diego Alonso Gonzales de Hermosillo married to Juana de Alderete (was the same individual that married earlier to Luisa Munos de Nava, or his son. Because in Diego and Juana's wedding there is no mention of him being widower, some of us concluded that they were father and son, otherwise Diego would have been in his 60's when he remarried, not impossible, but less likely.
Again, I encourage you to visit that forum topic.
Jaime

Subject: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] Another Son of Joseph Macias Valades andCatalina de la Vega
Can you explain the ascendency of diego alonso gonzalez de hermosillo. I am trying to connect this line to my other info. Do you have the parents of Joseph macias valadez and catalina de la vega?
No he podido encontrar informacion anterior.
apellido Camarena.
Alguien tendra dicha Dispensa???
De antemano gracias.

There's a lot of discussion on the merits of various DNA tests here, and I'm not knowledgeable enough to sort through and make sense of it all. So, I'm appealing for a simple answer - if that's possible.
Irrespective of cost, which test is, in everyone's opinion, the most thorough/definitive/comprehensive test available for a woman? My abuelita is 95 and I want to grab this while I can.
Thanks all!

I was wondering if anybody has any information about the history of this pueblo in Jalisco. The research that I have done all points to Ocotlan as being the church that my ancestors were baptized and married in. My specific names that are related to me are Mora, Cabeza de Baca, Villaroel,Godines, and Villanueva. If anybody has ancestors form this pueblo can you please reply.
Hello David,
Paso de Cuarenta (correct spelling is with a C) is in the jurisdiction of
Lagos de Moreno. Matanzas was once also part of the jurisdiction of Lagos
de Moreno.
The border crossing of Ruperto Mendoza shows that he was born in Lagos de
Moreno on 27 March 1897. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X2NH-YM7
The year is probably a mistake. I found a Ruperto Mendoza born in Lagos de
Moreno on 27 March 1887 and baptized on 30 March 1887.

The original is on the top right of the following image -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-118099-96?cc=1874591&w…
I can't find any records on the paternal grandparents.
The maternal grandparents were Domingo Acosta and Vicenta Silva married 20
Jan 1858 in Lagos de Moreno.

Vicenta Silva was baptized 5 April 1841

The Mendoza that wrote that he was born in Tiunfo, Baja California might
not be related to you. It might be just another person with the same name
as your ancestor. You have to be careful about not confusing people that
happen to have the same name. What other info is on that border crossing?

Armando
Is anyone able to tell me if Tomasina Velasco y Quevedo, married to Matias Lara Xiron, and Tomasina Velasco who was married to Francisco Beltran Cuevas is the same person?

Thanks to my cousin Katy Brecht's research; she found this dispensation. It was an important link because Maria Florentina Pinedo (my 4th GGM), widow of my 4th GGF Jose Juan Fernandez, and her second husband Gervacio Rodarte. It included a Family Trunk and named 3/4 generations pedigree. Most importantly it identified Celedonio Fernandez my 5th GGF. That connection enabled me to connect Erlinda Castanon-Long as my cousin. And Erlinda's research was a fountain of connections to other cousins! In the past two weeks I've increased my cousin count by hundreds! Some I've traced to present day. I still have hundreds more to add.
This is the website Katy Brecht found:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18409-25043-16?cc=1874591&wc….
BTW, the only 2 browsers that work are either Google Chrome or FireFox Mozilla.
Thanks to my cousin Katy Brecht and to Erlinda Castanon-Long!

Hello everyone, my name is David Mendoza. I am looking for any information regarding these two target areas of research concerning the Mendoza family name. My grandfather Ruperto and his brothers and sisters came to the United States over 100 years ago in the early 1900's. Sadly, the history and family relations/ties stayed behind in Mexico. I am hoping to find information to connect myself to the country of my paternal ancestors. I found that my Great-Grandfather was buried in Matanzas, Jalisco, Mexico and that he was married to Rosa Ramirez. On one of his visits to the U.S he scribbled his place of birth as Triumfo, L.C, Mexico? I cannot locate this place to continue my search. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Good evening!
This is my first, introductory e-mail to this group, so I thought it good
to start with my most recent connection the pueblos of Jalisco. My
grandfather, Primitivo Vargas, was born in San Nicolas, Jalisco, on 9 June
1905. He was the fifth of six children born to Jose Genaro Vargas and
Maria Delgadillo. My grandfather migrated to the USA, arriving in El Paso,
Texas on 15 July 1916 at the age of 11. He traveled with his mother,
Maria, his brother, Rodrigo, and 2 sisters, Modesta and Francisca. They
also had an older brother, Jesus, that appears to have stayed in Mexico at
that time. One additional sibling, Jose Gabino Vargas, was born 16 Oct
1895, but died as a baby on 10 June 1896.
Once in the United States, the family made its way to California, where
Primitivo lived out the rest of his years. He married Maria Micaela
Garcia, who was a native of Velardena, Durango. She was born 29 Sep 1913.
Her father, Esteban Garcia traveled with her to the United States, arriving
10 June 1920, when she was only 6 years old, also arriving via El Paso
Texas. His border crossing documents indicate that he originated in
Sauceda de la Borda, Zacatecas. He appears to have traveled to several
towns in Durango during his young life finding work in the mines of the
area. Once living in California, he worked on farms as a migrant worker.
My research recently has led me to the Pueblos around Lake Chapala in
Jalisco. I have been able to find family throughout the region, most
notably in San Nicolas (de los Ibarras), Ocotlan, Poncitlan, Jamay, and
other smaller areas in the region. I will be posting more information
about my various family ties and the research I have been conducting of
late. Thank you for adding me to the group. I look forward to sharing
more information in the future.
Sincerely,
David Vargas
