Abram,
Indeed Araujo it is not a common name, that's why I labeled it instead as "not strange". I have met people with that surname. By the way, the padrinos not were always a married couple. Sometimes they were brother and sister, or mother and son, or completely unrelated to each other. I've seen examples of each of those cases (in the ancient records as well as in my own modern family).

Hi Abram,
Araujo is not a strange surname here in Mexico.
I don't think one can say for sure Cristobal Delgadillos' parents are Juan Delgadillo and Antonia de Araugo. Juan may be Cristobal's father, uncle, brother or cousin.

Victoriano,

I don't think it's as common as Gonzalez,Garcia,Guzman, ect. And it seems to be that the last name Araugo or Araujo is Portuguese and Spanish how interesting. You might be right it could be either father , uncle or cousin.I tries looking for record images for Juan Delgadillo and Antonia Araugo(Araujo)but i didnt find anything.

education in Mexico

It depends on the area, time frame, resources and family traditions among other variables. In los altos de Jalisco there were many that could read and write because of a combination of these variables. Not everyone could but the opportunity to learn was often present in general. A great great uncle of mine Juan Franco would travel from rancho to rancho and preach the benefits of education and he was an exceptional teacher. My uncles Doctor Rito Romo Franco and Judge Melqiuades Perez franco began their education through his efforts. Many other people that lived in the outlying area around Valle de Gpe could read and write because of Juan Franco and others like him.

Thank you for bringing education up. Well when I browsed the archives for our village of Huejuquilla, Jalisco, Mexico, never say any comments about not being able to read or write, but the logs were recorded by the Friars or whoever was logging the books over confirmations, baptisms and such.

But I wonder if there were any schools in the Agricultural areas back during the colonial times? Are there any records of schools that existed?

It would be interesting to see what kind of education our ancestors had.

But I have read some information that the Conde of Hacienda San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico by the name of Fernando De La Campa y Cos (1676 - 1742) stressed education.

Hi Linda,

In some of the cases, this wasn't true. I've found records from some of my ancestors where there is the same writing of "por no saber firmar lo hago yo para que conste", when I know that actually some of those ancestors did know how to write or read. For example, my third greatgrandfather Abraham Agraz wrote a whole diary of one of his journeys to Mexico City which now is written in a book published about 30 years ago by my uncle Gabriel. Abraham in some church records appeared as he didn't know to sign but I have the image of his signature in another book about the Agraz family.

I have another case where the record says "no vino a firmar por lo que lo hice yo". For me, this is kind of weird because I suppose the couple should be there at the time when the priest is writing down the wedding information. This is the case of the marriage record of my great great grandparents Julián García de Alba and Isidra Preciado, they knew how to write and read because they said they

In Nochistlan, I found that the españoles for the most part did not know how to read and write, It would say " no firmo por no saber"

Some of the indios in Nochistlan did know how to read and write. In Nochistlan there was a decree from "La Corte de los Reinos de Castilla" that, due to the maltreatment of the españoles towards the indios, the españoles could not live within the confines of the town of Nochistlan, the españoles lived in the rancherias or outlying areas within the municipality of Nochistlan.

The indios in Nochistlan were to be protected by the Catholic Church, thus they had to live within the city. In the book Los Duran de Nochistlan, it defines the plan of the city and identifies who could live within the town, therefore the indios were the ones who received an education. Most of the scribes in the early days were indios, they were ones who were educated.

I'm working on marriage information records for Jerez, Zacatecas 1899 and am finding that 99% of the records say they can not read or write so the notary is signing the documents for them. I know Jerez was small but is this pretty standard for the education of people during those years?  Just wondering what others are finding in their research for Mexico during these years.

A Mexican Easter Dinner

I am looking for some good menu ideas/recommendations for Easter dinner.

Tamales and beans are rather heavy fare, so I would suggest keeping the side dishes light, such as Spanish Rice, Caesar salad, chunks of cantaloupe with strawberries, fruit drinks.

Hola!!

I live in México City and we do not have anything special for easter, but I
suggest some tacos of "Barbacoa of lamb" or tamales of barbacoa and Nopales
salad or Nopalitos

I agree with Emile, the tamales are rather heavy, here when we eat tamales
we dont have any additional dishes, we make a lot of different kinds of
tamales (mole, verde, rajas and for sweet the pink ones with raisins) and
for drinks chocolate or atole.

But I guess if you want some kind of salad the Nopales should be a good
sidedish.

The document is hard to read, it would be easier to find the words you want translated if you could mention in which line they appear.
In the second line of the document I think it says "hijo de hernando de villalpando".
In the third line from the bottom of the first paragraph I think it says "dho anton de villalpando".
dho is the abbreviation of "dicho", which could be translated as "the said", "the previously mentioned", "the after-mentioned", "such".

Francisca (daughter of Francisco Agustin Rangel and Cathalina Masias) was married to Josseph Arellanos, who was aka Marin-Penalosa alias Arellanos, aka Marin y Arellanos. Josseph and Francisca had seven, maybe eight children, all under Arellanos. Problem is, the films of the baptisms, at least the first ones, are backwards, and impossible to read. I have several ancestors with this same strange "Marin-Penalosa, alias Arellanos" annotated surname; they have been very difficult to trace. I wonder what the story behind that "alias" is...

Gloria,

Thanks for the response, I did not have anything on Francisca except for her baptism. I notice you have "Agustin" for Francisco's middle name. That's the first time I have seen that, can you tell me where that comes from? I know that the name Francisco and Agustin are used about six times each in the next couple generations down. I know what you mean about the strange name changes, some of the female Rangel decendants children use the name "Rangel" instead of the fathers surname. Our ancestors are just full of surprises.

Thanks
Ron

Comment

Ron, I need to make a correction. I had Francisca RANGEL's father as just Francisco, with no "Agustin." Sorry for the error.

If these images are inverted (do they look like mirror images?), you can use a program like Microsoft Picture Manager to flip (or invert) the image so it is readable; this program comes with Windows Vista or Windows 7 computers (and possibly earlier ones also). You would need to download each image to do it.

Hello all--

I have posted seven batches (FHL Source Film #s) since the blog went live again on March 13. If you didn't notice, I am no longer posting updates here on the NR pages so as not to clog the research posts.  If you want to know when new archives are extracted and posted online, I encourage you to connect to the official social pages below my signature.
I hope you are all making new discoveries as you find pertinent dispensas for your ancestors. I certainly have!

It looks as though posts from between 15 days ago and 3 days ago are
missing. This happened once before and what had happened was the posts were
not showing but not lost. A process had stopped working. This was fixed by
Arturo Ramos shortly after I let Joseph Puentes know about the problem. I
included them in this email. They are in chronological order though.

Armando, Roberto:

One way to find his parents is through his children's baptism records. I'm not sure if that is what you looked over. The name on his kids' baptisms is Juan Perez and hers is correct. Whether he was baptized Juan Nepomuceno Perez remains to be seen.
My grandmother was from Mier, and I knew there was a flood and records lost, so I went to 1) Mexico Catholic Church Records, 2) Tamaulipas, 3) Mier, 4) Baptisms 1767-1874. The file itself has an index per book. On image 51 it says "Perez Canales Maria Antonia, Yr 1805, Pg 4, Record 5, Book 3.

Chema,
