A partir del 15 de noviembre y hasta el 15 de febrero de 2008 estará abierta la convocatoria al segundo concurso de narrativa “Historias de Migrantes”.
Este año el concurso se abre a todo el mundo a fin de conocer la historia de los mexicanos que han emigrado para establecerse temporal o definitivamente en el extranjero.
En este concurso podrán participar todos los mexicanos o personas de origen mexicano mayores de 16 años que hayan vivido el fenómeno de la migración.
Este año se han establecido tres premios según el lugar de residencia que puede ser México, Estados Unidos o cualquier otro país.
El premio consiste de $20,000.00 pesos mexicanos y la publicación de la obra.
El concurso ha sido organizado por el Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior, el Consejo Nacional de Población, el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes y el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas.

Dear Marge,
My great-great-grandfather Antonio Frias Jasso moved to Tepic in 1848,
shortly after my great-great grandmother Refugio Ruiz de Esparza died in
Aguascalientes while giving birth to my great-grandmother Josefa Frias
Esparza. Josefa, her brother Antonio and her sisters Refugio, Virginia and
Natalia grew up in Tepic. Then in 1870 my great-grandmother married Wilhelm
L. Strecker, a German engineer. Three of their daughters were born in
Tepic. Wilhelm Strecker and Josefa Frias moved to Guatemala City in 1878,
where their son Guillermo was born in 1879. That child, Guillermo Strecker
Frías, was my grandfather. One of three daughters, María Teresa Strecker
Cabral, was my mother. I was also born in Guatemala, but now live in the
United States. That, in a nutshell, is where my Mexican ancestry starts. I
have traced the Ruiz de Esparza all the way back to Lope Ruiz de Esparza and
two generations before him. He arrived in Mexico City from Pamplona, Spain
in 1593.
My great-grandmother Josefa Frias Esparza lived in Tepic for approximately
31 years. I've found her family records without any difficulty, some at the
Cathedral in Tepic, others at the Archivo de la Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara
and the rest at the Archivo Historico del Estado de Nayarit. My wife and I
have done extensive genealogical research on that side of the family,
including fact-finding trips to Tepic in 2003 and 2004, to Aguascalientes in
2006 and of course to Guatemala for many year, where we have close
relatives.
I've seen the surname Najar in several documents, but not in genealogical
records. Unfortunately, I don't have any relatives with that surname, so
I'm afraid I cannot be of any help in that department. Sorry Marge.

Below is the address for the bookstore where I bought "Los Españoles en
Aguascalientes durante la época colonial". I couldn't find the receipt, but
it'll be easy to find with this information.
The mall is known as "El Parián" and is located at the intersection of
"Francisco Rivero y Gutiérrez" and "Morelos" (Zona Centro). It is a 15
minute walk from the main plaza, the Cathedral and the Palacio Municipal.
Although everybody knows where "El Parián" is, your best bet is to take a
taxi cab from your hotel. Across the street is the beautiful "Templo de San
Diego", built between 1653 and 1682. A lot of history here. It is well
worth a visit and a good landmark to use as a reference point. Next to the
church is a building that was the convent of the franciscan friars, which
houses art exhibits (at the room "Jesús Gómez de Portugal").
As I recall, the bookstore at "El Parián" is on the ground level outside the
building. The phone number for "El Parián" is (449) 915-61-33. If you call
them ahead of time they can give you the bookstore's phone number and its
exact location at the mall.
I'll try to send you more info. about "Encomenderos y Hacendados 1534-1650"

el valor de los símbolos en la historia, tendremos que conceder gran
importancia al hecho de que la cédula de fundación de la villa de
Aguascalientes haya sido firmada por el vasco Gerónimo de Orozco. En
diciembre de 1574, cuando Orozco asumió la presidencia de la Audiencia de
Guadalajara, recibió del rey instrucciones muy precisas en el sentido de
fortalecer la defensa de la frontera norteña. El mismo, como funcionario de
la Audiencia de México, había recorrido el camino que conducía a las minas
de Zacatecas, constatando la fragilidad de las rutas y los daños, muertes y

In visiting with them one day my father told me that he found his fathers birth certificate and baptismal cert. from mexico. So my question to you is

I wondered if anyone knew where Chupadero or Chupaderos is? Its the first time I have found it in my family history. I found it in the Baptisimo records for San Jose, Ojuelos de Jalisco. Is it in Zacatecas, Jalisco or San Luis Potosi?

Hola que tal mi nombre es Katia Cañedo, vivo en el estado de Guanajuato, pero toda mi familia paterna es de Guadalajara y zacatecas, busco a mi abuelo Ignacio Cañedo, pues no tengo ningun dato de el, sin embargo se que sus padres fueron Ignacio Cañedo Iñiguez y Ma. del Carmen Llamas (los dos de Guadalajara) tuvo 8 hermanos: Juan, Roberto, Celia, Ma. I'm new to nuestros ranchos so I hope I am writing to the correct address and in the correct language (if I'm not I apologize).
I've been working in my family history for 3 years now but mainly in Yucatán and Galicia from where my father's family came from.
Now I've started researching my mother's and my wife's side.
My wife is from Guadalajara and her family came from Atotonilco el Alto, Ayotlán, Mesa del Pino and nearby towns and rancherias, the surnames I'm researching are:

Besides, from my mother's side, my great grandfather Rafael Robles Montenegro (it seems it was a compounded surname) was "natural" of Guadalajara (other sources say that from Ameca), married to Cipriana Montes de Oca.
Even though I'm still starting with my Nueva Galicia's lines I hope I will be of some help to you all.

My Garcia line ends at 1800 at Don Theodoro Garcia husband of Dionicia de Calvillo. I have a baptism for one of there daughters of whom i descend. I descend from 3-4 of their kids. I need to order the baptism so i can get the line to the 1770's.

Just got this press release in: Get involved, if they get even more
people working on this than the 10,000 indexers they are seeking, the
projects described will be completed that much faster. Some do more
than just one batch a week, sometimes much more, how much one does is
up to you. The website to sign up to do indexing and download the
software mentioned is at this link:

Hello everybody. It's been a long time since I posted a message on the group. It's been extremely busy. Anyways, I'm just writing to announce (y presumir) that I just added a new generation to my family tree. My daughter Natalie Itzel Apodaca was born on October 11, 2007 in Winston-Salem, NC. She weighed 7 lbs and 1.6 ounces, and measured 20 inches. My wife and I are so happy! Well, I just thought about writing it in this forum, even though there are lots of new members since the last time I posted a message and most haven't read me before.

Welcome to the group Hope.
Your message caught my interest because I started my research in the same
parrish of Ixtlahuacan del Rio. Both of my parents were baptized there. I
recognized the names of all the towns you mention as well as the surnames,
which are very common in the area. My ancestors were from a rancho called
San Nicolás de los Abundis. The nearest church is the one in Ixtlahuacan
del Rio, so they were married and baptized there. Prior to 1800, I had
order the microfilms from Cuquio. I don't have a record of your gggg
grandparents, but I do find a lot of those surnames in my PAF database.
Please take a look at my files and see if you find any common lines. I look
forward to exchanging info with you.

Hello, I am Hope Gonzalez Martin. I am first generation Mexican American, my parents were both born on the Rancho Buena Vista, Jalisco, as were many of my grandparents and relatives. I am concentrating on my Father's family. I have been able to trace my grandparents back to my gggg grandfather Jose Gertrudis Gonzales. I have used the local library of the LDS to obtain copies of birth,christening and marriage recordings. I think my gggg grandfather Jose Gertrudis was from Spain, the earliest recording I have of him is that he was a witness at my ggggg grandparent marriage in 1802 in the town of Tacotlan, Jal.
Jose Gertrudis was married to Barbara Peres. The ggggg grandparents that he was a witness for were Jose Calletano Peres, he is listed as Espanol and his bride Juana Munos(z) as Mullata, she was born to Xaiver Munoz and Antonia De Olea on Feb 19, 1776 in the town of Cuquio, Jal.
This is where my research ends and where I hope to learn more from all of you who have more research experience than I. I also hope that I can be of help to the other members who have less experience in research

Regarding the use of informacion matrimonial records: I feel obligated to point out to new researchers that occasionally these may contain questionable or inaccurate information. In other words, don’t believe everything you read. Ages are not always accurate, people are not necessarily born in the place stated, and a “parent” may actually be a stepparent, or the groom (or bride) is someone’s hijo/a natural, raised in ignorance of this fact.
Even with the “right” father and mother as given in the informacion matrimonial, there have been times I still couldn’t find my missing ancestors. From experience I’ve learned to first research baptisms in all the given places and parishes, then all possible places and parishes within the right years, and to list possible siblings according to age and birth date, allowing at least 10 months between them. When this doesn't work, then I research other possible given names and family groups.
I wish someone had pointed this out to me when I first started research, it would have saved me several wasted years.

I know I have gone out there with this question before but our membership has grown quite a bit over the last year and so I will ask once again to see if I get any takers...
Are there any members out there who have programming experience, particularly PHP/MySQL that would like to participate in the technical maintenance of the site?
For the most part the site runs without too many problems but once in a while there is a glitch or one of the volunteers that monitors/manages membership or some other aspect of the site needs some custom programming done to make their life easier. I am also thinking of upgrading the site at some point to improve security, performance and perhaps add some functionality.
The more we distribute the responsibility for the site the more successful it will be.
Please contact me personally if you are interested.
