Escobedo in Zacatecas

Robert,

I thought I had lots of Escobedos [Escovedo] in my lines, but I see I have mostly Acevedos.

However, I did find one Escovedo. She was Mariana de Escovedo, an espanola (Spanish), who married a Pablo Jose Suriano, a mulato, around 1797, probably in Tepetongo or Salitrillo. That means she might have been born around 1777. Mariana was also listed in her children's birth records under various names such as Maria Ana Guadalupe [Mata] or [Flores] or [De La Torre]. This has made it hard for me to find her birth record so I don't know who her parents were or where she was born. I suspect her mother may have been a Mata or Flores or a Delatorre; those families were as prominent in Zacatecas as the Escovedos. Sometimes they used only their mother's surname.

wow. Emilie, my families history is almost identical to yours. My grandfather had a sister named Mariana who was married to a man, last name Mesa (I can't remember right now his first) and he was executed on trumped up charges. When the authorities realized their mistake they gave Mariana money that she used to come here. She had two brothers who were conscripted also, named Francisco and Felipe and they were never seen or heard from again. My grandfather made it over here through El Paso also. The name Mata has come up in my search. In fact I'll look for it but there was a Mata and I think the name was Juan de Mata. I'll have to go look. I have been trying to find records of military information also. All of this also happened around 1913-1916.

Esparza Family from Noria de los Angeles and El Hacienda Corro

I am interested to know if anyone is familiar with the terrain of Zacatecas and the ranchos nearby. Mariano Esparza was from an area called Corro in Zacatecas. I am having difficulty finding Corro on the map of Zacatecas. If anyone has any information or any family line that trace to the Corro area or Noria de los angeles please write back.

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to this site and looking for anyone with Escobedo's in their family tree. I have my genealogy traced back to around 1820 but have not had much luck getting more information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are your Escobedos from Zacatecas? I have Escobedos in my lines, and I think they originated in Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas.

Yes I do. That seems to be the only place I can find any of them but my grandfather thought we may have come from Jalisco but wasn't sure. What are the names of some of yours? The names I know that came there are my great grandfather Teodoro Escobedo who married Francisca Ortiz and was born in Guadalupe, Zacatecas and had brothers named Enrique and Leonardo and a sister named Manuela. Their father was named Gabino and was married to Isabel Reyes. Gabino was born in 1838 to Estevan Escobedo and his mother was also named Francisca. There are more names but those are the ones I am concentrating on right now. The cities that I know they lived include Noria and Monte Escobedo. My grandfather said we came from a mountain and almost everyone there was an Escobedo. (Monte Escobedo?)

I seen people go all over that area it was named Nueva Galicia and most families never left that entire area except to the north. -Daniel

A historical relationship between states? In what context--migration, establishment-?

Most of us in the group, those of us from the US anyway, have more ancestors that migrated north to Chihuahua or Leon. I don't have any ancestors from Zacatecas (and my husband doesn't have any ancestors from Jalisco), that migrated to Guanajuato. I know very little about Guanajuato, except that many migrants to the US are from there. It had a very rich silver mine centuries ago, and many Indian tribes. I don't know when it became a state.

I am left to wonder why you were thinking of a "relationship" between Guanajuato and our ancestral states. What led you to think about it?

Nick,

I would suggest, looking for your grandfather Miguel's death record in Atolinga, Zacatecas. Try both the civil and parish (I strongly recommend the civil).

Then, I would look for the marriage record of your grandparents Miguiel and Felipa. Once again check both civil and parish.

Then, you can look for Miguel's birth record.

The death and marriage records, should narrow down the time frame and location of his birth and christening records.

The FHL (Family History Library) does have both Civil and Parish records for Atolinga, Zacatecas. So you can order the films into your local FHC (Family History Center).

I did notice that the FHL does not have any census records for Atolinga.

thanks,

Joseph,
In the Catholic faith during confirmation an individual-by his own will and concience- accepts the Catholic Faith and renounces to evil in presence of a Bishop, appearing with only one padrino or madrina, who was responsible for helping the ahijado(a) prepare in the doctrine of Church including an understanding of the the Confirmation cermony. Back in the old days in Mexico, that sponsor generally was an adult, often a relative, but not necessarily, and in many occassions it was the same Padrino from baptism. Interestingly, prior to the Second Vatican Council, there was no specified age for confirmation. Thus, for instance I was confirmed as a baby following my baptism (so much for me deciding one way or another).

Today, at least in the US, the name of godfather or godmother for confirmation appears to have been replaced with 'sponsor'. The sponsor has to be a confirmed Catholic. It can be a relative or a close friend, -even of the same age as the one being confirmed- my son

I don't know about current practices, but I had a madrina when I was
confirmed in 1966. Most chose a family member. One always chose a
godparent of the same sex.

Just to add to the comment, when I was baptized I had a padrino and a
madrina (my grandparents), when I did my first communion I had only a
padrino (uncle), when I was confirmed I also only had a padrino (different
uncle) and once upon a time when I got married I had a padrino and a madrina
(another uncle and his wife).

Two of my uncles still call me ahijado once in a while (not my marriage one)
hehehe!

The padrinos that have the most responsibility and the most important ones
in a person's life are the baptism ones, although it's nice to have a lot of
other padrinos because you then expect your "domingo" from each one on
Sundays.

Cantinflas at NMAH

The following is not about genealogy, but about some contemporary (i.e., 20th century) Mexican culture.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History (NMAH), in Washington, DC, has undergone some extensive renovation and is scheduled to re-open on Nov 21. The section on Popular Culture will now be called "Thanks For the Memories", and one of the exhibits will feature "Cantinflas". Those of you of a certain age may remember a Mexican comedian named Cantinflas who appeared in many Mexican films, mostly in the '40's and '50's, and also appeared in the US film "Around the World in 80 Days". You can read more about the overall museum renovations here:

I have just received my Y-DNA profile. I belong to the Haplogroup: E1b1b1-M35. The report states the following: "E1b1b1 lineages probably dispersed into the Middle East, Southern Europe and Southern Africa." Since having traced my ancestors all the way back to Hermosilla, Burgos, Spain, I would say that the group which I belong would be Southern Europe. "Expansion into Southern Europe occurred with the Middle Eastern farmers during the Neolithic period. The entry of E1b1b-M81 into Iberia probably occurred with a later migration event via the Straight of Gibraltar when Arab-influenced Berbers occupied the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, E1b1b1-M35 and its subclades are now the third most frequent haplogroup in Europe".

I would like to know if any other members of Nuestros Ranchos belong to this haplogroup also, I would like to hear from you. I have already found near perfect matches in Tepatitlán and Jalostotitlán, Jalisco.

Hi John,

My father was born in Tepatitlan. His Haplogroup is J2b1, M102+ and

originated in the Middle East with the largest concentration being
found in Iran and Greece. Interesting.

Hi Linda:

I was tested by Genetree and in their database is where I found the people
from Tepatitlan and Jalostotitlan who had also had their Y-DNA analyzed. I
have not had a chance to search other databases.
For great and extensive information on DNA and detailed information on each
haplogroup you can go to Genebase.com. Go to Tutorials, from the left side
of the page select "Y-DNA Haplogroups", from the next window select "Learn
about Y-DNA haplogroup J" which is the second choice down. There is an
awful lot of information here, including world maps of the distribution of
the groups. Scroll down in this page until you find the group you are
interested in.

Good luck.

Dear Daniel--

My husband is related to Juan GODINEZ born about 1660 and married about 1684 to Micaela de Estrada. Their son Antonio GODINES was baptized 25 Mar 1685 in Ocotlan, Jalisco and married 6 Mar 1707, in La Barca to Manuela de LOMELIN, who was the daughter of Juan Baptista de OROSCO and Beatris VASQUES.

No, but we are looking at the early 1800's in Jalisco. These families tie into the Mora and Cabeza de Baca families. I can send you my tree and see if we have any matches.

Petra Godines married Rafael Mora in about 1821. Dear Daniel-

These are the microfilms I have on permanent loan at my local Family History Center. Next time I go, I will see what I can find out.

281,017 Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1769-1801 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico
281,018 Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1779-1801 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico
281,023 Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1828-1836 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico
281,070 Matrimonios 1681-1768 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico
281,071 Matrimonios 1768-1814 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico
281,073 Matrimonios 1836-1861 La Barca, Jalisco, Mexico

Although the dates for Petra GODINEZ and Rafael MORA are not covered here, perhaps I can find either his or her siblings and or parents or some of Petra and Rafael's children.

I have just started to trace a Maria Andrea MORA born to Rafael MORA and Julia RODRIGUEZ. She married 29 Jun 1879 in La Barca so I am thinking that this part of the MORA family might go back a few decades into La Barca, also.

Is this Cabeza de Baca family connected to the same surname in Michoacan early to late 1700's?  I have some in my records from Chilchota and Tlazazalca Michoacan posted on Rootsweb.com. They connect to my family through marriage only.

ANTONIO TOPETE, (TOPETE BOOK)

Antonio, I don't know if it is fine to write in english to you, I think it's ok. I was checking to information about the members and the lastnames they serach and I found yours (Topete). According what I read, you don't have any information about your family. I'm glad to tell you that I have a book (that you can look for) which talks about your family back to 1700's This is a very interestin book and has a lot of information with many genealogical lines. The book talks about the history of the region you are searching back to 1500's
