Thanks for answering. To my knowledge no one has done DNA testing. These ancestors were my paternal grandmother's. Anita

Dear Sophia--

Thanks for the reference. I have a few Bannuelos in my research but they are in the late 1700's or early 1800's so I have a ways to go to trace them back. I shall keep this for reference.

Many thanks.

Hello Phyls,

I imagine that that the Angela your asking about is Angela de Velasco y Figueroa Termino de Beñuelos, who was married to Diego Flores de Torre (1540-1653) Guadalajara.
I have her parents as Francisco Figueroa y Carbajal and Ana Maria Bañuelos.

YAHUALICA, Jalisco, LISARDE and other misread names...

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Dear Ranchos Group--

I have two comments in regard to this listing by Daniel.

1. My husband and I had the opportunity a few years ago to visit Yahualica, Jalisco. It is a most beautiful place and unlike any other part in Mexico. If this is where your families lines go, try to plan a trip to see the land. It is absolutely incredible. At the time of our visit, we only had a camera for pictures. However the grandeur and scope of the place can only be appreciated first hand or as a poor second choice, through the offerings of a video camera. Additionally, this place was seen by Pope John Paul II and there is a statue near the church to commemorate his visit.

Hi All! I agree with Patricia, family history is fun the hours go by fast. Especially once you connect back to roaylty it is so cool! My favorite ancestor is Carlos V, the most powerful man ever lived (besides Jesus Christ of course)
HE owned all of Spain, the Americas, Nether lands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Italy, Corsica, Sicily, parts of France, Switerzland, parts of Poland. I eventually after college would like to visit All of Los Altos and know where a big chunck of my ancestors lived at one point in Spanish times. I would also like to visit all around Europe since my parents have "a lttle blood of everything" mostly England, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, Germany and France. I plan to move to Spain eventually and meet all these cousins I hear bet havent met. COunt me in I will visit Yahualica! -Daniel :)

Just a common misread when the films were being indexed for the IGI, LISARDE was misread for
LISALDE, of whom are the original family of López de Elisalde. When searching still try to look up with Lisarde since most of them are under that because of a simple mistake. -Daniel

Hola Ronnie. No te culpo por estar confundido. It took me a while to
figure out all the connections. What you have is correct, except that
you're missing two earlier generations. Diego Flores de la Torre married to
Beatriz de Anda Altamirano y Castañeda was the third Encomendero de
Juchipila. His parents were his namesake Diego Flores de la Torre and Doña
Angela de Velasco. This Diego was the second Encomendero de Juchipila. His
father Hernán Flores, Conquistador de la Nueva Galicia, married to Doña
María Alvarez de la Torre, was the first Encomendero. This was his second
marriage. His first wife was Isabel de Alvarado, daughter of Gómez de
Alvarado and niece of the Adelantado de Guatemala Capt. Pedro de Alvarado.
As far as I know, there were no children from his first marriage.

Take care, primo.

Hola Ronnie and Bill,
I have all the Diego's as well. It is confusing! Hernan Flores' parents were Catalina Flores and Pedro De Fuentes. I have dozens of the Flores De L a Torre tree. Does anyone have Diego Flores De La Torre y Arias' ( 1629-?) descendants. I would like to compare names from this huge tree with you, Bill and Ronnie. I am sure it connects to my gg-gfather, Trinidad Flores, de Juchipila. He might have been born around the 1830's.

Juana Flores de la Torre y Hermosillo
Su marido: Tomas Martin del Campo y Lopez de la Cruz (which is my line)

Hola Primo,

Estoy bien, gracias.

What I know about Lucia and Diego is that Diego was the son of Diego de Padilla Davila and Ana de la Mota y Vera.
Lucia was born about 1650 and she married Diego in 1668 Jalostotitlan, having one daughter, Ana de Padilla Davila y Flores de la Torre. She was born in 1670. She married Matias opez y Sanchez.
After Jalostotitlan, Lucia and a small Ana moved to Leon, Nueva España.Widow, Lucia married Miguel de Olaez Roldan, probably before 1683.

I'm sorry I made a mistake, Diego Flores de la Torre y Hermosillo married Juana Guerra Gallardo. Juana Maria Flores de la Torre y Guerra was there daughter, who was born in Lagos at the end of 1694. She was married to Santiago Fernandez de San Salvador.
more children:
Ines, born around 1696 married to Jose de San Roman Serrano y Landeros.
Diego Flores de la Torre y Guerra, baptized in 1698

curiosity about ranchos

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there is a list of ranchos / haciendas and who owned
them for the state of Jalisco.

Specifically I'm looking for info on San Jeronimo, which is now near or
a part of La Union de Guadalupe. Supposedly my grandfather's family

Hi Angelina, as far as I know their isnt really a list, I guess in México namley Los Altos and Aguas if someone knew who owned the hacienda "they knew". If your family supposly owned then my best guess was that they did. On records you can easily know about families who owned them if it is called el rancho de los Rodríguez, then the best guess would be Los Rodríguez. Our hacienda
was originally "El Carretón de la Hacienda de Nuestra Señora de la Luz del CAMINO"
Owned from 1850-1918, before we purchased that we were said to have own other haciendas
in Aguas and Pinos. -Daniel Méndez del Camino

Joseph,

Esther Harold misspelled the surname Temiño de Velasco. The record you have
definitely says Tremiño with an "R", first on the left margin of the
document and second on the document itself. Married were Justo Rufino
Puente and María Josefa Gregoria Sánchez Tremiño. Close, but not equal.
There is also a Treviño surname, but this is neither Temiño nor Treviño.
I've NOT seen Tremiño in Aguascalientes, so it may be unique to Zacatecas
and the Real y Minas de Sombrerete.

Thanks Bill I appreciate your take on this record. I haven't exhausted
all possibilities but this my GGGG grandparents draws me close to the
end since he is from Zacatecas, Zacatecas and in a time period that the
baptism records are missing. I'm ordering the confirmation records and
eventually the Informacion Matrimonial records for the dates before 1749
in case Justo was first born and his parents Antonio and Anna were
married in Zacatecas, Zacatecas. I found Justo in an 1817 census record
in another location saying basically he was born in 1749 (that is if his
age is anywhere close to being accurate on the census record which is of
course subject to error).

thanks again,

I guess I got curious if this surname might be related to the Tremino de

Terms & Place Names In Records

Hi, Everyone:
I am currently going through a film for the marriage records of the San
Diego Parish of Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco for the 1800's. Well, I have
found a new term I have never run across before and wanted to ask if anyone

Here, Corrine, a reference for the term "venta" from "El Quijote de la Mancha":

Hi Corrine!

I had found this term "puesto" in my search, it refers to a "venta" or "posta" which is a place to rest and feed travelers and horses and mules, merely a hotel. You could try to go to this link:

http://www.e-local.gob.mx/work/templates/enciclo/jalisco/mpios/14048a.h…

from where I extracted this:
"A mediados del siglo XVI, en que se suprimieron las encomiendas, aparecen la estancia y el rancho en Los Altos, y surgen los puestos o ventas que eran los albergues o posadas que se establecían en los caminos reales."

¿Could you translate the reference above for whom may need it? I am not good for the task.

You will find useful a page in the web: Enciclopedia de los Municipios de México maybe there are more reference to such term.

I've also seen this usage, also apparently interchangeable (based on,
say a marriage petition and the marriage certificate of the same
event) with hacienda. I assumed from some dictionary clues that it
probably means something like "place of" or "vecinity of". At first I
thought it might be a miss-transcription of pueblo or puerto, but I
finally concluded that puesto was correct.

Hi Corrine, "Puesto", in my reference book says, " A place, post. or small town" From "Compilation of Colonial Spanish Tearms and Documents Related Phrases" Maybe this will help a bit. Can you give the complete information (Author, Title, pub) for this
source? I think I might like to find or obtain this reference.

Does any one has any information on the CAMPOS family from San Juan de los Lagos?

In searching marriage records in Sagrario (Asunción), Aguascalientes
in the early 1700's late 1600's I have noted more than the expected
number of brides and grooms who use their mother's surname. I usually
expect that these are natural children, but the number of occurances
suggests a matronymic naming pattern. Does anyone know if this was the
case in that time period?

I am not asserting that this is true: I am asking whether anyone else
has any knowledge of this. Maybe it was just sloppy record keeping.

BTW, I appreciated the comments regarding "help with name forms". They
were most helpful.

Stuart---Most of us have found that many times legitimate children were given the surnames of maternal parents and grandparents. I think the reason was the prominence of the maternal line over a paternal line lower on the social scale? I have found that some of my father's ancestors in Zacatecas and my husband's ancestors from Jalisco and Aguascalientes from the early 1700s on down kept switching names, using any of three or more surnames. Made it so difficult to find them and keep them straight.

I found the marriage records from the mid to late 1600's in Chilchota Michoacan very hard to follow since not only the mother but the grandmothers surname was used. Sometimes I had to wait until there were children being baptised to be sure they were the same people.  I also found this in other lines in the same time period in Jalisco.

Stuart:

In Iberian (Spanish and Portuguese) naming tradition, there was in no way any propensity or expectation that children would receive their father's surname. Often if the mother's family was more prominent, the children would take the mother's surname.

Even more unique was the tradition of naming a child after a person, i.e. grandparent, respected neighbor, etc. by giving the child the entire name, including surname, so it is very common to find girls that use their MATERNAL grandmother's name since that is whom they were named after.

It was not until the early 1700s that the paternal name tradition began to gain traction and not until around the time of the Bourbon reforms and Independence that the current paternal-maternal combination was made the standard.

Dear Corrine-

Although we do not share the same family lines, I
enjoyed reading this email of yours. I wish you good
luck on your future research.

Previously I lived in Santa Maria for a short time
while in grade school. I later graduated from Lompoc
High School in 1965. I have many pleasant memories of
this part of California.

Thank you for sharing your progress...it certainly energizes me to stay
motivated in continuing my research of my ancestral lines. I have too found
that the Family Research Pilot website has been a useful tool; I found more
ancestors that my family never knew of. Again, thank you for sharing.
