Relationship terminology

Well now we might be opening up a can of worms. I've lived all my life
following what you just said. If a cousin of mine had a kid his kids
would call me Tio. BUT since starting genealogy I've heard that this is
technically not correct and that the rules in Mexico didn't allow for
this. So how can we find out what the "official" Mexico rules are for
relationships?

Just as a side note I have an 82 year old 2nd cousin once removed (he
and my dad would have been 2nd cousins) who is a Priest in Jerez,
Zacatecas. I would like to know the rules but regardless of the rules I
will never ever ever call this dear relative "Primo" . . .respect
screams out from the heavens for me to call him Tio and thats what I
call him: Tio Alberto Roman (Francisco Javier Roman; Julian Roman; Juan
Nepomuceno Roman; Jose Maria Roman).

This is correct, but I don't know of a book or text where you can find this. I know it because this is how it is in Mexico. Many times having to explain this to people who are not from Mexico gets to be a little confusing.

In a recent conversation, an adult relative of my husband (the son
of my husband's cousin brother -- his first cousin, once removed in English)
informed me that my husband was his tío. I wasn't about to argue, but I
don't think he is correct. However, I do not know the terminology for
Spanish genealogical relationships.

Is there a publication that has it all laid out? If it has already
been discussed and is in the archives, I apologize for the query, and I'll
look it up.

In English, each succeeding generation is a new level of cousin --
as long as both lines are represented, yours and your relative's. If you
reach the end of one line, the level of kinship (cousinship) stays the same,
but the generation moves until the end of the other line is reached. (I
know -- that was a horrible explantion.)

Heritage Quest references

sorry, but even those with a subscription cannot get more than just the
reference you saw. It comes from PERSI which is also available on
ancestry and at your local FHC. I guess if there is an article of
interest you can google it and find the source and see about ordering
back copies of the journal/paper.

ps: an inexpensive way to get Heritage Quest is through the Godfrey

Pedigree Resource File

I just submitted my privatized .gedcom to the www.familysearch.org
site as a Pedigree Resource File submission. Has anyone on the list
done this before? So how does this work? Does every single name in the
.gedcom get put in so that the search engine will pull it up by surname?

just as an example here is some of their listings:

6. Angela Castreje Diaz - Pedigree Resource File
Gender: F Birth/Christening: Argentina
7. Ana Jova Diaz - Pedigree Resource File
Gender: F Birth/Christening: 17 Sep 1923 Bustinza, Pcia.Santa Fe,
Argentina
8. Antonia DÍAZ - Pedigree Resource File
Gender: F Birth/Christening: Argentina

how is it that the brief info following the name comes into the search
engine results? Is it that the search engine picks out the exact
wording in the .gedcom including the place of birth and puts it into
the results? . . .as in the above example?

thanks,

joseph

The Poll. . .in Progress

Amazing things continue to happen. . .its the new year and I just got
back from a most remarkable weekend in Atlanta. . .its amazing how even
an abundance of alcohol can't keep me from thinking about genealogy.
Seems that every barmaid was a possible cousin once I found out what
her historical ethnic roots were and compared them with my recent
multinational DNA results. Yes a most remarkable weekend in Atlanta!

. . .well thats not what I wish to continue on but the below poll
results are. Seems that the steam has faded on participation in the
poll. But even though many many more of you all would need to vote for
this to be a valid poll it is amazing that currently the results weigh
in at a majority wanting "ME" to be "MORE STRICT" with potential new
members of the Ranchos Group. But again this is far from a valid poll
until 75% of
the permanent members vote and if I get
60% of those voting to vote for one of
the choices. Also only those that have a "genealogy" registered in the
"Files" area of the group are eligible to vote.

Happy New Years everyone. . .mi deseo es que todos tienen un año muy
prospero!

Dual Marriage Question

I believe there is a distinction between a Dispensa and an
Información Matrimonial. The dispensa was issued by the
bishopric.
In the case of Los Altos the bishopric was in Guadalajara. The
dispensa was a permission to marry. The Información Matrimonial
was
an investigation and once that was satisfied I don't think it always
resulted in a dispensa, but correct me if I am wrong. Also the
Información Matrimonial was conducted by the local parrish. Both
documents contain a wealth of information. I have an Información
Matrimonial that covered the life of one of my ancestors in great
detail. It talks about where she was born, when she first married,
widowed, and where she resided until she married (my ancestor) for
the second time. I have a dispensa from 1735 for another couple that
is 21 pages long. They needed the dispensa because they were related
to one another and the witnesses name the couple's ancestors four
generations back! It was quite a find.

Ryskamp, does talk about the pre-marriage investigations, in chapter
10, page 193 of his book. Usually the results, of such investigations
were kept in the "informaciones matrimoniales" or the "diligencias
matrimoniales"

Also, what makes you think that the two wives Maria Genoveba and Maria
Josefa were from a different parish. Because, at times, people were
not christened in a parish, but the family may have moved to the
parish, after the children were christened, but they lived in the
parish for years. The priest may then think, that he didn't need to
make any further contact.
