Well go figure. Another Basque name.  Thank you for the information. In all the Basque listing of surnames I never came across this one.  I know my husbands family will be happy to know this.  From that region my paternal grandma was surnamed Velasco.  A new state assemblyman Juan Arambula from Fresno I believe just took office.  His family via an e-mail to a friend confirms his roots from Los Altos.

 

Again, thank you and I am anxious to delve into the materials you have.

the database: "Dissertation Abstacts" check with your local library for
it or your largest University library. there is another service called
"Digital Dissertations" (I think?) that lets you purchase dissertations
for something like $35 as of about a year ago. Prices may have changed.
then again you can contact the specific library listed and ask them for
ILL possibilities or if you have University borrowing privledges***
then you can try to initiate a loan through them (I think ILL is more
likely from one University to another rather than to a public library).
Checking with the originiating libary will be your last resort as I'm
sure for a $ you can make arrangements to have the dissertation sent to
you even though if it is close enought (one was UCSD) you can just go
there and look at it free (well thats the way its been for the
libraries I've attended. . .check with UCSD for their specifics)

I've seen it as Aramburu, Arambulo, Arambula, Aranburu, Aranbulo, Aranbula, Aramvuru, Aramvulo, Aramvula, Aranvuru, Aranvulo, Aranvula, and even once as Arambo.  Reminds me of Sly Stallone (Hay, Rambo). Whoa!! 

 

By far the most common forms are the first three:  Aramburu, Arambula, and very rarely Arambulo.  I saw something on the Aramburu/Arambula/Arambulo surname Forum on Genealogy.com that there were many Arambulo's in Peru.

Sometimes you just can't find your way past a road block. When that
happens you need to ask: "Do I want to get past this obstacle or not?"
Reading stuff that is not directly related to your genealogy is
sometimes necessary. Immersion (bautizmo) is something that you should
consider. . .immerse yourself in everything about your area. read read

AB: In their desire to end the long and costly warfare with the nomadic
Indians on colonial Mexico's northern frontier, Spanish officials
pursued a number of remedies; one of which was pacification of the
region through the introduction of colonies of Indian allies from
central Mexico. By far the most energetic and large-scale effort of
this type took place in 1591, when about one thousand Tlaxcalans were
sent north to found six widely scattered settlements. This study traces
the history of five of them (San Luis Colotlan,
San Andres del Teul, San Miguel Mesquitic, Nuestra Senora de la
Asuncion de Tlaxcalilla, and San Sebastian del Agua del Venado), in an
attempt to ascertain the impact of the expedition in general, and

Avelar, Aguayo and Gomez lines. Still trying to decipher some of the
family lines. The GGG, abuelo Prudencio Olmos creatied some
interesting family ties in that he had two sets of wives and families
and appeared to be married at the same time to both women. The first
wife and family should have inherited the wealth but it was just the
opposite. Needles to say this created much dissention within the
families. Through the years I would hear comments such as "son de los
otros Olmos", meaning that it wasn't the same Olmos family. I'm still
working on this and need more verification that they were the same
family. I'm thinking that the reason he could pull this off was

The Villarreal's are a very prominent family from the Zacatecas region, which although a different state than Jalisco is very close to Los Altos.  The main trade caravans during the period using mule teams were out of Teocaltiche.  They traveled locally and all the way to Santa Fe.  I will scan and post the info I have.

so sorry to hear about your brother. I don't know of ways to preserve
the DNA without one of the collection kits sent out with the test. I
might be wrong about this but I think there are more expensive tests
that can be done with hair. Another thing to consider is does your
brother have any male children because you can pick up your dad's side
via his male children and you can get your mom's mom's mom's etc side
via your own MtDNA.

I just wanted to share something that about my past.  Recently, I learned what native american blood we have from our father's side of the family.

 

On the marriage record of Thomas Bermeo and Juana Flores (1742) it is mentioned that They were "Indios Tlaxcaltecos" and their parents origin was Nadadores,Coahuila, this is a small town close to Cuatro Cienegas.  Here's what's interesting:  Tlaxcaltecos Indians were not indigenous to Nuevo Leon/Coahuila area.  Upon further research, I found out that these were the same Indians that had befriended Cortez and helped bring the Aztec empire down.  Further, they were brought up by the Espanoles to the Nuevo Leon/Coahuila area to help docile the local population. 

 

I thought this information was wonderful and it was found through birth certificates!.  Our indigenous heritage was purposely down-played, and I, for one was delighted to find out why some of us are "morenos" on our father's side of the family.

 

Regarding the DNA project, a distant cousin of mine did do it.  He found out that we were Jewish, as was suspected with our Villarreal line.  Later, I found out that my great uncle always knew about our heritage, but the aunts kept it under wraps, for fear of "talk".  That explains why this side of the family aren't real "catolicos-romanos-apostolicos".  Further, I found out that I am a direct link to the Villarreales who settled in the Nuevo Leon area - my great great grandfather was from the very same area - how cool is that?  We are trying to find out about the other Villarreal (my grandmother was also one) - and when the migration occurred to Cd Victoria and then Coahuila.

 

I wish I could find similar type of information on my mom's side of the family, who are from Zacatecas.  I am beginning to suspect that they may have come from Jalisco before settling there - I am at a stand-still with the Herrera/Luna branch who came from the Tlaltenango area.  I may have to make a visit to the local archives.

Food Traditions

Hello All,

 

I have been following the conversations about food traditions and how to cook Menudo, Pozole, etc.  I don't know if anyone shares the custom that we have in the Sain Alto region of Zacatecas.  Many people have Reliquias (Spelling?).  These are celebrations in honor of a patron saint.  Households will cook a whole lot of food and then pray a rosary in honor of that saint and the best part of all is that the food will be given away to anyone that comes to the house.  If you wish to eat in the home that is acceptable and if not, then families will normally bring a dish and it will be filled to take home.  It is a wonderful tradition that we have in Sain Alto.

 

My husband is from Magdalena, Jalisco and he has never heard of a Reliquia.  My father-in-law's parents and grandparents are from Zacatecas and he has heard of and attended some Reliquia.  So this leads me to believe that it may be a Zacatecas thing.  What do you think?

 

And yes, I too celebrate all of my various light, dark and fair skin colored family members. I know what it is like to have a family with an aray of colors.  It is wonderful to think and know that our children and grandchildren might look like or resemble any of our ancestors, light, dark, short, tall , or medium.
