Hello. I am stuck with a branch of my genealogy and have a doubt 
that maybe some of you may answer. When you think that you found 
your earliest ancestor in Mexico, how do you start your research on 
that line on another country? The reason I am asking this is because 
I cannot find any information on the IGI about my Apodaca ancestors 
in Jalisco before 1784. I know that my ancestor Domingo Apodaca was 
a mestizo married that year and that his parents were Jose Maria 
Apodaca and Paula de Albiano. However, where should I look for info 
about the origin of the parents? Domingo's wife, Gertrudis Bonal, 
was a espanola and I can trace her ancestors back to the beginning 
of the 1700's in Tlajomulco, Jalisco. I know where to look for these 
ancestors. But for my Apodaca line, I just don't know what to do. I 
am planning to check all documents of Domingo's brothers and their 
children to see if I can find a clue about Jose Maria Apodaca and 
Paula de Albiano. Can anyone of you help me with this? I would 
really appreciate any guidance.

I have little control over the genealogies of the group other than
trusting in the integrity of the membership. That is the reason I insist
on keeping the genealogies in the non-public "files" area or if your
work is on a webpage in the non-public "links" area of the group. I
would discourage you from sending in your work as attachments to the
whole group as was recently the case. . .to do so is done at your own
risk since the archives are public.

Also for the sake of privacy I'd encourage you all to begin with your
grandparents (if they have deceased) and go back from them.

Also I've noticed that we have 71 members but only 60 members of the
Ranchos2 group.

so that means that 11 of you can't access the Ranchos2 "files" area. Try
this:

go to the ranchos "links" area.
go to the link called "Ranchos2"
click on it and see if it takes you to a link for the Ranchos2 files area
if it doesn't send an email to makas@... asking me whazzup

 I for one would never drive it again but it was a good experience to do it once. If you need more detailed driving information I can look it up. The last two times we hired a driver at the airport in Guadalajara. He could make more money in one week as our driver than he could as a shuttle bus driver at the airport for two months. We rented a car and he drove us around to Nochistlan, Tlachichila and surrounding towns. It was great!!

We will be going to visit family and now that I've begun the family history search it will be an interesting experience.

visited one of her great aunts that still resides in
Sain Alto and obtained some useful information. 

I even got some pictures of my great grandmother
Marcela Castrejon, great aunt Maria Sierra that lived
in Moorpark, California, and my great grandfather,
Pablo Gonzalez Monsivais.  Words can not describe the
joy I felt to have these in my possession.  I can
really see so many features that have been passed on

scanner but will buy one soon and upload them into the
pictures section for all to see.

All the information is strictly word of mouth and
recollection on the part of my mother's great aunt and
other various relatives.  I plan to seek the documents
to back up the information.  In the meantime, I have
typed up the names of my relatives, some are deceased
and some are living.  If it is stated then I am sure
of their whereabouts. If it's not stated, then I am
not sure if they are still living.

I have atteched these files.

Do you plan to drive? How long do you plan to travel?
  
I think the trip is somewhat long, but I am not too
sure. If you have never traveled to Mexico by way of
car, then I suggest you visit a AAA office if you are
a member.  

I obtained a book from them and it was very handy when
my husband and I went three years ago.  AAA also gave
us a detailed map of Mexico that I just gave to my
husband's cousin yesterday. He is going to Magdalena ,
Jalisco.  

I looked through the book I have, Mexico Travel Book,
2001 edition by AAA.  It has a map of the highways and
 approximate times between cities.  I calculated the
trip from San Diego to Zacatecas, the capital city, to
be roughly 34-36 hours long, depending on the route.
Depending on the border town you wish to go through. 
This is what the book tells me, however, I have never
traveled this route.

You can travel down the west coast of Mexico to
Mazatlan and cut across to Durango (Mazatlan to
Durango is about 5 and a half hrs) and down to
Zacatecas (about 5 hrs). From Zacatecas you must still
head south to Jalpa on Hwy 54. Nochistlan is just
south of Jalpa by way of Hwy. 131.

OR you may take the scenic route and go all the way to
Guadalajara, Jalisco then work your way north to
Nochistlan.

If you wish to travel more inside the US, then
consider crossing the border in Nogales or El Paso and
there are also various routes to get to Zacatecas.  It
all depends on your preferences.

I traveled through Laredo, TX to Sain Alto, just north
of Zacatecas, the city; we then went to Guadalajara,
Jalisco. The estimated times and distances were fairly
accurate, depending on driving speed. 

I am not advertising for AAA, this is just the way I
went about it when I traveled to Mexico three years
ago.

Hope this gives you an idea.  Let me know if I may be
of further assistance.

P.S. Don't be discouraged by the distance and travel
times.  Decide on your preferences and consider the
various routes and places(cities) you will see on your
way there.  I hope to go next year as well, so Good
Luck!
PSS You can always fly to Zacatecas (airport code ZCL)
or Guadalajara and go to Nochistlan, however, this may
be more expensive.

Hi all, I just recently joined the group and I am researching for 
information on my mother's side ancestors. They are from Los Altos de 
Jalisco, some from ranchos and some from small towns.

The surnames I am researching are Hernández, Cervantes, Abarca and 
Valle (some other relatives are Placencia, Nuño, Nuñez and Sánchez). 
They are mostly from the area of San Jos de Gracia, Atotonilco el 
Alto, Ocotln, Arandas and the ranchos of Ortiguilla, Ojo de Agua de 
Latillas, La Muralla, Barranquilla and El Salvador.

My farthest I could get was to my great great grandfather Marcelino 
Valle, born in the mid-1800s and his 2 wives; Rita Hernández and 
Toribia Nuño (or Nuñez) (married again after Rita died). Also my 
great grandparents were Refugio Cervantes and Leonides Valle 
(Marcelino's daughter), and Bruno Hernández and Catalina (or 
Catarina?)Hernández; my grandparents were Félix Hernández (son of 
Bruno and Catalina) and Guadalupe Cervantes (daughter of Leonides).

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I have some information on 
the families of the rest of Marcelino Valle's children also if you 
think we are related.

Regarding your question about the hacienda - I recently learned while I was 
in Mexico digging up materials about the village from where my husband was 
born, that many haciendas/villages were given the opportunity to change their name 
after the Mexican revolution - and many did.  The rationale was that the 
"people" were empowered with their land, and so there was an effort to erase the 
autocracy which had existed under colonial rule and before the revolution. Some 
haciendas eventually became small villages, and retained a portion of their 
original name - 

On the other hand, as what happened to me in Monterrey, the hacienda's name 
actually became a "colonia" of the expanding city of Monterrey - I don't know 
how big Pinos, Zacatecas is......perhaps that can be explored....
