Carol, I use PAF 5, which I downloaded from the Familysearch (the LDS website). The product is free. You can't beat that! This version follows the Microsoft standard interface. So, if you are familiar with the use of Microsoft products, you will not have too hard of a time learning to use this product. People become accustomed to the product they learn to use first, so each person will have a preference for one product over the other. I reccomend this one because it is free, and I've been able to produce every kind of report I've ever had a need for. All the files I have uploaded to this website have been produced using PAF 5. Hi Carol,
I had previously used a program called Generations. I
have since switched to a free program which you can
download off of Ancestry.com . I have actually found
this program to be easier to utilize. It has the
ability to create charts and a variety of other
reports. Pretty awesome for being free!! In my
opinion it would be the perfect program for the
beginnings of your genealogy.
Good luck!!
Sincerely,
-Esther Valencia

As for myself, I have always used Family Tree Maker, by Brøderbund. While I cannot say anything about RootsMagic, I am quite familiar with Personal Ancestral File. I have always found PAF cumbersome and awfully hard to manipulate in. Even doing the simplest of commands is a mindboggling undertaking. Sorry to any PAF fans out there, but I give it two thumbs down. :( I would like to familiarize myself with RootsMagic. Sounds good. While Family Tree Maker is great if you want to create custom made reports, single person descendancy charts, pedigree charts, family group sheets, and many other things, I do not have much freedom to arrange the items in a family group sheets in the precise order that I want. Family Tree Maker also makes really nice picture pedigree charts. I have been doing this for a while now, and it's really not hard to do at all. Regards, Steven H.

I use Personal Ancestral File. I got it because it was only $6. It gets the job done, so I haven't looked into any of the other programs.
I switched from Family Tree Maker to RootsMagic. I prefer the charts available especially the Pedigree and Photo charts. Gloria
I am using Family Tree Maker. It is one of the biggest ones on the market. --- citicarol <citicarol@...> wrote: > I just started researching my ancestors and would > like some > recommendations on a software program that can help > manage the names > and information. I just started researching my ancestors and would like some recommendations on a software program that can help manage the names and information. I thought I would just start with my maternal grandmother's side of the family from Ciudad Guzman in Jalisco but it is now turning into a bigger tree than I originally thought. A program that can be uploaded to this site would be helpful so that I can publish the data. Thanks, Carol Ramirez

Dear Group--
My husband and I spent 10 days in Jalisco in December.
We went a few times to the city of Atotonilco el Alto
but spent most of the time with our cousins in the
nearby villages of Margaritas, Santa Elena, San
Joaquin, and Milpillas. There is another place in
Jalisco called Atotonilco el Bajo so I always make
sure to say the complete name of the first city
mentioned.
My niece and I went two different days to view the
local cemeteries. The first was the old cemetery in
Atotonilco el Alto. A few years ago there was a flood
and it destroyed some of the plots. Where before the
dates could go back hundreds of years, that is not the
case today. Next trip I will check the new cemetery
of Atotonilco el Alto and see what I can find.
We also went to the cemetery near Margaritas which
among others, serves the people of Margaritas, San
Joaquin and Santa Elena. It wasn't for me but I was
looking for the name of Borunda for a contact of mine.
I found lots. We went on a day of full sunshine and
spent at least two hours. I hope to go again to
continue my research.
Both trips were very informative and I took a lot of
pictures and some notes. I am now following up by
looking again at the 1930 Mexican Census at my local
Family History Center.
Happy New Year to all. Sincerely,
Patricia Diane Godinez

I just got off the phone and it turns out that my Nina who married my
Nino, Jose Refugio Puentes, is an Alteño. If anyone comes across any of
these names from San Miguel el Alto please let me know.
Estanislao Marquez (dob: 1857) married Teodora Jimenez and had a Mateo
Marquez who later married a Juana Peragon who was born in Spain.
Yes I realize this is not much to go on but if it rings a bell let me know. Joseph
ps: she mentioned misc. stuff like another cousin of mine who is from
San Juan de los Lagos was a De Anda.
pps: Is San Miguel el Alto the only Pueblo/Rancho in Los Altos area that
has "el Alto" in its name? My Nina said, "my grandparents were from 'el
Alto' and it seems that i remember 'San Miguel el Alto' " but then she
was talking about San Juan de los Lagos so I didn't get a 100%
confirmation on San Miguel el Alto only a "pretty sure." She did go on
to say that when her grandmother died that her grandfather went to San
Juan de los Lagos and 6 months later came back to California with a new
bride that was a Marquez and a second cousin.
