Hi Bill

You are absolutely right! I looked at it again and wonder how in the world I did not see it...

And Trancoso is also a place in Zacatecas. Could Francoso be a permutation of Trancoso? There are a lot of Francosos in the IGI index in the NR area...(maybe people transcribing made the same mistake I did!)

If any one has an e-mail to John D Inclan I would like to ask him if any of the Hurtado de Mendoza are tha same as an in example of Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza wife of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano. I have found Mr. Inclan's genealogies extremely helpful, and he also is good about providing the sources. His email address is on his webpage, which I don't have handy, but he's not hard to find on the net. (He has been good at responding to my inquiries, despite the fact he must get a lot of emails!)

I found it useful to google a name/surname I was interested in, together with "Inclan", and usually the relevant genealogy popped up. Try that, before you write him, as a lot of information is already easily available. I absolutely recommend using his genealogies as a way in to the maze of family history.

Yes, Based on my extensiv research on the Mendozas, all of them from Spain including the new world come from Pedro González, Señor de Mendoza. If any of you are a descendant of this very intelligent man, you are related to every Monarch of europe. There's only about 5 currently. We have to remember the great importance the Mendozas played in Spain. They are descended from the Kings of Navarra. The Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza from Jalisco, "her father was supposed to be Diego Hurtado de Mendoza who settled in los ALtos, but there's no proof! He came from Huelva, spain. Its hard to track down this Diego because in the same time period there was over 7 Diego Hurtado de Mendozas. I come from several lines from PEdo de Mendoza, but this is my main line.

Sure, we at Nuestros Ranchos can find commons ancestors in Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes, but not all branches have descendants in Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Texas and New Mexico.

I see you have Arellano in your ancestry. I have Felix de Arellano.

Ronald,

I am familiar with Inclan's research and it is well respected.

Also, and independent of Inclan's research, I can confirm through my own
research in my family tree, that Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza (aka Isabel
Velasco de Mendoza and wife of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano) was the
daughter of Ana Maria de Cardenas Francisco Hurtado de Mendoza, Marquez de
Almazan... ... and on and on for many generations.

Where do you tie in with this line?

If I have an actual date, I usually start from that date and look backwards in the Informacion matrimonial. Usually I find that what I am looking for was recorded two to three months before the actual wedding date, however I have had cases where I found the information six months to a year before the actual wedding. It all depends if the marriage was contested or if the individuals had to provide additional documentation to be cleared to marry.

Ana,

You can find the informacion matrimonial records, usually in the same collection where you found the marriage record. Just that it is called informacion matrimonial. Usually the entry in the informacion matrimonial record is found within 3 weeks to 2 months before the actual marriage. Also be aware, that not every marriage was kept in the informacion matrimonial.

If you are looking for old maps, try looking at davidrumsey.com , they do have some old maps for different states in Mexico. If you are trying to find where the places are/were at, I would suggest the gazetteer by Antonio Garcia Cubas. the link to the collection is http://biblio2.colmex.mx/bibdig/dicc_cubas/base3.htm .

I hope that this helps.

Juan Carrillo. I might add that church record keepers approach their logs a bit different. In some records I found a list of the names as an index at the beginning of the year. In others, one has to go page by page looking for the name. Be aware that on occasion the names are spelled differently than how we might be spelling. For instance, my abuela was named "Florencia", the records show her as "Lorenza". The handwriting can be challenging because of the styles used. Example (and there are many): an f and a capital S, or a z, etc. On occasion you find what appears to be a relative as a witness or a godparent at another person's baptism or wedding. May be more true in small towns or ranchos. Be prepared to spend a good deal of time.

then click the part of guadalajara they came fromn, and see if you can find a collection of baptismal records that contain the years they were born. if not then search for both of their parents(if you know their names and birth year and month of course. the reason why i didn't say birthday since the baptismal day isn't usually on the child's birthday, it's sometime after, like a couple days, perhaps weeks)

Katy, I want to thank you for sharing the link to the baptismal records in Guadalajara. I was able to find the baptism records of my husband's maternal grandmother, Altagracia Miramontes. She was born in November 1909 in Colotlan.

We had only the name of her father. For some reason, no one in the family knew her mother's name. In this one simple handwritten record, we were able to confirm the city in which she was born; we learned her mother's name, and we learned the name of all of her grandparents' names. I was so excited to find the information, I almost called the whole family at midnight! I was nice to them and waited until morning.

Next, we are going to look for her husband's records. His name was Emilio Valdivia, and we think he was from Totatiche. We do know he was in the seminary in Totatiche at the time of the Cristero War and had to flee to keep from being killed. I hope to find more information about his family.

Again, thank you for sharing the link

Finding nationality is nice but try to find more than one record that gives it. Many of us in Nuestrosranchos have families where the children are all different nationalities depending on color, 1 Espanol, 1 Mestiso, 1 Yndio and 1 Mulato! The Mother was never at the baptism so the godparents were usually the ones giving information and the scribe was making his own decisions on the Nationalities.

I have recently finished reading the book "Moctezuma's Children, Aztec Royalty Under Spanish Rule, 1520-1700" by Donald E. Chipman. What an excellent book! And it's in English which makes it easier for me to truly understand! It has genealogy charts for Moctezuma, his children and grandchildren. Donald Chipman is professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Texas in Denton. In 2003, King Juan Carlos I of Spain knighted him as a Caballero of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic, the highest honor that can be accorded to a non-Spaniard. In this book he discusses the politics and cultures of Mexico, Spain and the Caribbean Islands which really help make our ancestors come to life. He and his assistants have spent years of research in both Mexico and Spain and everything is thoroughly documented. For those of you who may be interested, I purchased this book at BarnesandNoble.com and paid $24.95 US. However, after I purchased it, I found that it was cheaper ($16.75

Comentario

I, too think I may be descended from Petronila Sotela de Moctezuma and have
the same tentative lineage from Moctezuma, pieced together but
unsubstantiated. I had noticed Donald Chipman makes no mention of her, and
that Jose Luis Vazquez y Rodriguez de Frias only says that "es bien conocido
que se reconoce como nieta del Emperador Moctezuma Zocoyotzin" on page 187
of *Genealogia de Nochistlan Antiguo Reino de la Nueva Galicia...* It looks
like she would be Moctezuma's greatgranddaughter. I have not had the time
to pursue this puzzle, but would also appreciate learning if anyone has any
additional info.

My directions weren't very clear: the search is somewhat more complicated than my posting indicated. These directions that follow will take you to a specifc record.

Select the Archivo as I described (Archivo General de Indias) from the pull down menu.

In the FILTRO POR SIGNATURA field, click on the button labeled Seleccionar. This will allow you to scroll through the lists to select the actual record to retrieve.

Scroll through the list, you'll need to click on the small down arrow at the end to get to the next page.

Click on the + next to MP-ESCUDOS. This will bring up a partial list of numbers. Type the number (for example 211) in the box next to the word "contiene," and click the check mark. Depending on the record, this will bring up another shorter list. In this case, only one number in the list, click on the link for the number 211 (this is below the box you just entered the number 211 in). This then returns you the the search screen with Signatura filled in. (In some

The names with a question mark are Ma. Eugenia de Haro (which you had
correctly) and Gertrudis Mayorga.

Teniente de cura is an auxiliary priest that does some of the work of the
regular priest. The regular priest is the one that is responsible for the
church.

Illegitimate children were definitely baptized. The baptisms would say hijo
de padres no conocidos when neither parent was named amd hijo natural when
only the mother was named or if both parents were names but not married.

Just because the baptism record can't be found doesn't mean she wasn't
baptized. It could be a name was written incorrectly when your ancestor was
baptized or the record was lost. There are a lot of baptisms that are
missing for a lot of my ancestors or their siblings.

To Laura,

The maternal grandmother is simply Gertrudis Mayorga. The other names are OK as you have them. A suggestion: you may want to keep track of the name of the padrinos. Sometimes those names are helpful. Teniente de cura means assistant priest or ass't pastor. All of the children who were brought to be baptized were baptized. They were labeled differently. I hope this helps you.

Hello Denise,

I can't help you with what you are asking about. Here is what I can give
you:

The marriage of the parents of Joseph Raphael Prudencio Romo de Vivar and
Joseph Raphael Silvestre Romo de Vivar (Antonio Romo and Maria Ana de Alva)
can be found at the following:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-13033-121643-47?cc=1410092…

The parents of Antonio Romo were my ancestors Miguel Romo de Vivar (hijo
natural de José Romo de Vivar y Ruiz de Esparza) and Josefa Ana Macías
Valadez y Gómez de Espejo.

As far as finding out which Rafael married Rafaela you need to find both of
the baptisms and see if either of them died at birth. If not then look
through all of the volumes of Información Matrimonial for the whole state
of Aguascalientes which would be a daunting task. What you could get from
the Información Matrimonial is the reported age of the groom but it isn't
always accurate, however if you can find one for both Joseph Raphael
Prudencio Romo de Vivar and

Many Thanks Armando! I have now seen the image and saved it to my computer. Time will tell if I am actually descended from them...As you noted in your message, I have to go through a lot of records! But thats genealogy in a nutshell.

Isn't it unusual for an hijo natural to have the father listed? its the first time I've seen that.

Denise

Denise,

It is unusual to have the father listed in the baptism of an hijo natural,
although I have seen that happen before. However, that is not what happened
here. There are two different dispensas that mention Miguel Romo as the
hijo natural of José Romo. The first has the following info:

Hello Armando

Thanks for the source citations! Just what I needed. I can see I need to re-do my tree (or at least, the tree that may be there if I ever make the solid connection to Aguascalientes!) There are also surely others in the forum who can use this info as well. I did learn yesterday that Raphael was a common name in Encarnacion in the late 1700's, in contrast to Aguas, Aguas. Sagrario., so I feel one step closer.

Denise
ps thanks for the advice about the website on Rio Sauces I mentioned in a previous message. Again it just shows thats it important to compare sources of information.

The frequency a first name appears in searches has absolutely nothing to do
with where you are likely to find their marriages and baptisms. The only
lead you have tells you Rafael Romo was from Aguascalientes. I would search
there and not Jalisco.

Good luck

Denise,

I have seen the father's listed on many birth records for hijos naturales. I guess it would depend on whether the father claimed them as his children. My GG Grandfather Prudencio Olmos claimed all 7 of his children from his mistress in the birth records of the church.

Hello again Armando

Here is a very interesting article about Rio de los Sauces, known today as Encarnacion de Diaz:
http://www.historiasyrecuerdosdeencarnaciondediaz.com/macias.html

It is a little confusing, in that it is Juan Antono Romo de Vivar who is named as a native of Rio de los Sauces, but the Macias Valades family were the ones who owned property there. However, two Romos are mentioned in the article.

Below is a quote which shows where the name Rio de los Sauces came from.

Denise,

I have read the articles of that website many times ever since Miguel
Beltrán made us aware of it here on NR. Be very careful with the
genealogies found on it because there are some errors, some include my
ancestors.

Something to keep in mind is that just because someone is a native of a
ranch doesn't mean they owned it. The Romo family extended itself all over
Los Altos and Aguascalientes and moved back and forth between the two
areas. Your ancestors may have stayed in the same place or they may have
moved around. There is no telling until you find more documents.

Endogamy is marriage within family. The dispensas were for asking for a
waiver or permission to marry 2nd and 3rd cousins.

Hi Armando

I was doing a little double checking, and I can see that you have the father of Miguel Romo to be Jose Romo de Vivar y Ruiz de Esparza:

"The parents of Antonio Romo were my ancestors Miguel Romo de Vivar (hijo
natural de José Romo de Vivar y Ruiz de Esparza) and Josefa Ana Macías
Valadez y Gómez de Espejo."

Ernie Alderete, in Gedcom here in NR, has the father of Miguel to be Andres Romo de Vivar and mother Maria Lopez de Elizalde.

So I was wondering if you have a link to the image of the christening or baptism of Miguel Romo, which mentions who his father is.

I still have not found the marriage of Raphael Romo and Rafaela Aguilar, though I have sifted through the marriages of Encarnacion de Diaz from 1782 to 1788. Both Raphael Romos were born in the mid 1780's so I did not think it was likely either would marry before 1782. My upper limit is 1798, as son Manuel Romo married in 1816.
Sooner or later, something will turn up!

Hi Denise,
My grandmothers family is from AGS and I had a hard time finding her baptismal records but after much persistence I found that she and two siblings were baptized in Bajio de San Jose, Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco which is nearby. You may want to try that area.

Thanks! I am so glad you mentioned that. I am now looking in Encarnacion. There are a few routes to the information I need. The best info would be the marriage documention, but if I cant find that, then I'll try baptism (of son Manuel Romo) or Information Matrimonial. I am learning as go!

Hello Katy,

You actually posted a link of some marriages of Colotlán. However, if your ancestor Isabel de Ulloa was a parishioner of Colotlán, there is a hamlet called "Arroyo del Fraile", located in the municipality of Del Nayar in the state of Nayarit. It is relatively close to Colotlán.

Here is the link of an informational page of "Arroyo del Fraile" that contains a map of the community.

ADN de Los Altos (What happened?)

Can anyone tell me what happened to the project that was called "ADN de Los Altos?" I am so disappointed this is no longer online.

Please advise,
