Felipe de Jesus Alvarez del Castillo was married to Maria Teresa Garcia. One of his sons is found marrying in 1748 in Ayo el Chico, Jalisco. Felipe de Jesus Alvarez del Castillo is also from “rancho Rosa del Castillo.”
Bealca,
By chance, I think I just found exactly what you’re looking for. This Información Matrimonial connects all of the clues you provided: ALVAREZ, GARCIA, VELASQUES, and ROSA de CASTILLA.

Información Matrimonial: Santiago ALVARES & Librada VELASQUES
Arandas, 1873
In it, Santiago states that he is from Rosa de Castilla and that his mother is Dolores GARCIA.
From what I know, Santiago's direct ascendant line is:
Juan Álvarez del Castillo (tronco)
↘Nicolás Álvarez de Castillo
↘Ramón Álvarez del Castillo
↘Nicolás Álvarez del Castillo
↘Antonio Álvarez del Castillo
↘Juan Manuel Álvarez del Castillo
↘José Vicente Nicolás Álvarez del Castillo
↘Pablo Ygnacio Álvarez
↘Santiago Álvarez=Librada Velásquez
I hope this helps.
Could it be that there is some confusion regarding the family name? In the years 1825 and 1826 there are various individuals with the last name Olibares living in Rosa de Castilla but not a single Albares.

If you have ancestors in Texas, this may be of interest:
I often go through arhives to look at Texas. In the year 1722 a number of planos of presidios of Texas show up in the Pars website. It concides with a "Meritos" document of Colonel Don Fernando De La Campa y Cos, who was living in the Zacatecas area. In the last page of his meritos document, it states that he supported a 500 man expedition from Zacatecas to colonize Texas on February 3, 1720 with 94,388 pesos. He signs the meritos document dated July 17, 1722.

Thank you for all the good pares links! Looking forward to checking them out!

From my understanding about Texas history. After Mexico became indepdendent from Spain in the early 1800's. Then the provinces that made up Nuevo Espana began to vote where or not to be included in the Republic of Mexico in 1824.
Texas had signed in August of 1824 to be included into the Republic of Mexico knowns as "Adhesion Al Federalismo. There weren't any americans living in Texas during the colonial days of Texas as you can see in the census. They didn't show up until after 1824.
My Great Great Great Great Grandfather, who was "indio" and a member of the council of our pueblo in Jalisco had signed to represent our pueblo to be included into the Republic of Mexico as my other Great Great Grandfather was a witness and all their names appear in the document in the archive.
I am no expert but it does appear to be a padrón for San Antonio, Texas. I searched PARES and the internet for Toribio de Urrutia, the first householder listed, and the results confirmed it for me.
One observation I have is that the year written in the top left margin is off by 100 years. My reading of the header of the padrón itself is that it states, mil ce-tecientos cecenta y tres (1763).
As Denise noted, Apache and Comanche appear on the padrón, along with the usual casta designations: mulato, mulato libre, esclavo, coyote, lobo, and mestizo. Furthermore, one can see that there are also a handful of individuals labeled frances and flamenco who are likely Catholics of French and Flemish origin respectively.
On image 09, I wonder about the meaning of the word opinado. Is that another casta? The word follows the entries for Pedro Treviño and Gregoria Pérez.
Fascinating find, I think, for anyone interested in the colonial history of the City of San Antonio and of the State of Texas
I just looked at the padron and it has writing in numbers "1663." But in text it says mil ce-tecientos cecenta tres (1763).
I am bewildered to see in number writing (1663). Because I often search documents on Texas in the pars archives and I have never seen any documents about Texas older that 1692.
I know that when Texas first appears in the archives in 1692 it was originally named La Nueva Philipinas." The New Phillipines. I know that during the time of (Nueva Espana) days of Mexico. It was common for spanish ships to sail from the Pacific side of Nueva Espana to the Phillipines as there are a lot of documents about the philipines, maps, drawings of the natives of the Philipines. There were two Capitans with last name "Tagle" that were in Zacatecas, Nueva Espana (Mexico) that had traveled in "navios" to the philipines and they have a meritos document. I vaguely remember it was Capitan Francisco Tagle I believe.
I have also seen an early map of Texas and it was a smaller
Hi Madera_32
What you wrote about the Phillipines makes perfect sense, taken together with the name "opinado" in the padron.
I don't think the correct date is 1663 because as you wrote, the earliest mention of the area is from the late 1600s. And the presidio was not founded til 1718. So I believe the correct year is 1763.

Denise
Thanks for the imput mralvarez! Yes, I can see now there are two different years. 1763...that's about 30 years after the arrival of Canary Islanders, and since I am descended from one of those families, I suppose I have ancestors on that padron - must check!
Googled the name opinado, and it does seem to have something to do with the Phillipines, as noted in another post in this thread.
I gave the citation for this document to Dr. Walter L Buenger, chief historian of the Texas State Historical Association, and a professor in the history department at UT Austin. I thought he might know who would be especially interested in the information in it. It would a shame for it not to be used in historical research, assuming no one else has seen it/used it before. It gives a fascinating picture of the mix of classes, cultures and languages in the early days of San Antonio.

Denise
If your a descendant from one of the Canary Islanders? Your ancestors must had to register with the Real Audencia Government of Guadalara in regards to titles for land as well as "sellos" branding irons for livestock.
I have copies of land titles of my ancestor that he register with the Real Audencia of Guadalajara in 1692/1693 as well as the symbol for the branding iron he used for his livestock.
There were more than just people from the Canary Islands that populated what today is South Texas. Because there was a Colonel name Don Fernando De La Campa y Cos (1672 - 1742) who resided in his haciendas of Zacatecas.
Before there was colonization of South Texas he had gone on a military expedition with Juan Olivan Rebolledo to explore and map south Texas and the nearby areas.
Juan Olivan Rebolledo got married with Don Fernando Campa y Cos' youngest daughter in Ciudad Zacatecas in 1724.
Don Fernando Campa y Cos had given over 94,000 pesos for a 500 man expedition from Zacatecas to

I am reading this translated in english pdf file of the year 1735 at San Antonio De Bejar, Texas:

I also saw in the pars website an archive of familys of canary islands to Texas year 1732:

I also like this document about Meritos Francisco Cos y Lombrana. On the second page of the meritos it mentions a Fray Juan Gregorio Campa y Cos /Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe college of frays in Zacatecas. "Campa y Cos?" He is probably related to "Colonel Don Fernando De La Campa y Cos on the other link below where on pg 4 it says Colonel Fernano Campa y Cos had something to do with financing an 500 man expedition from Zacatecas to Texas in 1720.

For some reason, when I copied and pasted the link to the webpage with the search results it goes to a general webpage on the site instead. The first example was one on the search list.
I am looking at this document of tierras and see a lot of places that are under jurisdiction of Juchipila and Tlatenango.

I believe that Fray Marcos de Niza was probably the very first explorer (besides the native americans) of what today is Texas and New Mexico.
Hello,
I remembered this thread as soon as I saw the Guadalajara marriage record for Antonio Rodríguez Chino de las indias orientales natural de la Ciudad de Vengala.
Makes one wonder what the scribe was thinking here. Could it be Antonio was Chinese or Burmese from Bengal, which is technically not a city but a region? Or have I read it wrong and his surnames are Rodríguez Chino and he is from Bengal or one of its chief cities, like Kolkata (Calcutta)?
I think Chino in this case is not part of his name, since the record states that he is from the East Indies.
Searching for the origin of the name of the city of Bengal, Wikipedia says "The name of Bengal is derived from the ancient kingdom of Vanga ..."
So, "Bengal" is a reasonable interpretation of "Ciudad de Vengala".
Hello,
My dna shows 4% Indonesian, maylasian + Japan. My paternal oral history has always been that our 3x great grandparents were south East Asian. I was told that they worked the mines in chihuahua early 1800s but have not been able to verify through docs...but the dna is there and some in my family do have features. While I continue to search, I assume they came with the Manila Galleons through Acapulco since Indonesian slaves were included.
Maven
I used to wonder about possible immigrants from East Asia to Colonial Mexico via Acapulco, but I never saw any records for them until I started to peruse the indexed dispensas at Valladolid Dispensas. If you search Valladolid Dispensas you will find records for a Chinese man, a Malaccan, and various Filipinos.

Though I haven’t seen any records of people from Sri Lanka during my research, I have seen records of Asians & Pacific Islanders as early as 1642:
Here’s a burial record, dated 29 May 1642, for Agustin Lopez de la Cruz, “de nación Japón,” who died in the Hospital of Señor San Miguel in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Hi Manny
Regarding the watering down of the dna, keep in mind this would happen less, if cousins married, especially if it happened several times over a few hundred years.
I have had the same mystery about some Great Britain dna in my paternal grandmother's family, where several generations back from her are identified and no indiviuals are Anglo. My best theory is an ancestor way further back, whose descendants remarried a few time over the ensuing generations. For example, on my family tree there is a confusing instance of two brothers who married two sisters, and their children (or maybe it was two grandchildren) married.
Good luck with your research!

(start of quote)
THE CASADOS
Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque (1508-1515), recognized the problem of a shortage of manpower at an early stage. He sought to overcome this by encouraging the Portuguese to intermarry with the local population. Many Portuguese outposts in Portuguese Asia were inadequately manned. It was expected that the offspring of these marriages would create a population in the colonies loyal to the Portuguese crown. 1
These married settlers were known as casados, and lived in various towns and cities in Sri Lanka. Having married local women, they maintained close contact with the local population. Their neighbours, through intercourse with them, were able to acquire
Thank you for your reply! That's something I didn't take into account, Portuguese ancestors and 'Mulattos' within the records. I have come across a lot of 'mulatto libre' records, some within my own tree. That might be worth re-looking into.

Is it possible that this girl was married at age 10?
Maria Feliciana Lara
b. 3 Jun 1801 (baptized 9 Jun 1801), Arandas, Jalisco, daughter of Marianno Lara and Maria Guadalupe Ramires
considering i have an ancestor who married at 11 and had her first kid a year later, i wouldn't be surpised if that girl was married at 9/10 considering how women and girls were treated back then.
Getting married at nine doesn’t mean that it was consummated then. I found a record that states that an ancestor of mine was considered married at eight, yet it wasn’t consummated until later in life when he was in his early twenties. While still in shock at the marriage at eight, I was surprised that the marriage wasn’t consummated when they were in their teens. Furthermore, this was by far the earliest age given in the marriage of a male. The other early ages that I had found previously belonged to females. Arranged marriages of the past were often made for political and monetary reasons, like keeping the money in the family, or extending the political reach in order to settle disputes and lower the possibility of war.
Rick A. Ricci
Rick A. Ricci rightly points out that dynastic families all over the world, and throughout history, have used the arranged marriages of their children for financial and political reasons. This is well known.
I think what is most shocking to my modern sensibilities, in this case, is the more likely scenario that, since it is known that the two were not members of renowned royal familes, Juan de Dios Martín del Campo (age 18) of las Raíces and his child bride María Feliciana Lara of las Cruces were both married because of something more ominous.
Sadly , I agree with Glenn. It does seem that Juan de Dios Martin del Campo did something that would shock our sensibilities that most likely led to a “shotgun wedding” as a consequence of his actions. Marriage for a child two weeks before her tenth birthday is sad, not something to celebrate. Even in the times that teenage marriage was a common occurrence.
Rick
Angelita says there was a son also named Juan de Dios, b. 1811.
Juan de Dios Martin and Feliciana Lara christened a son named Juan Antonio on 15 Jan 1813 (Juan Antonio Español de los Corrales), Feliciana was under 12.
If Juan Antonio was not Feliciana's firstborn, it looks like she was pregnant at the marriage date.
Juan Antonio's christening record is a better picture of Feliciana's tragedy, she got married at 9 and became a mother at 11 (if this was not at 10).
Deeply, deeply sad case.
Rubén Hernandez
Hello Angelita.
I searched for the original documents, just in case there were any perceptible errors in the names or in the information in the documents.
Christening record:
Marriage record:
22 May 1811.- "Juan de Dios Martin con Maria Feliciana Lara españoles de los Corrales y las Cruces"
Felicina got married at 9, about 2 weeks before her 10 birthday on 3 Jun 1811.

Hello Angelita,
The youngest age of a bride that I have seen is age 14 or 13. The marriage was at beginning 1700's, it needed the approval from the father and a dispensation because of the age of the bride. 10 to me is too young specially for 1800's. Just a thought...

Hola:

Hello Everyone,
Hello,
I don't have much to contribute other than the padron for Puruandiro, Michoacan from 1668. It will give you an idea of some of the families that lived in the area. You'll find the Vargas (Machuca) Berbers, Alcalas, Cervantes, Villasenors, Orozcos, etc. from this time period and location. Perhaps it might bear some fruit or help to rule out or confirm a theory:

Hi Sus, thanks for posting these links! I have gone through them again and it looks like I had some errors in my previous post regarding the Barroso-Cervantes-Anda families.
It looks like Beatriz Diaz Barroso married twice. The first was to Leonel de Cervantes in Valladolid (Morelia, Michoacan) in 1609. Leonel seems to have been the son of Francisco de Orozco Villasenor and Leonisia de Guasca. He was dead before 1658, probably in Puruandiro where the family owned an hacienda called Carano that was sold by Beatriz and later disputed by her and Leonel’s son Tomas de Cervantes.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-BGPM-S?i=572&cc=188338…
Beatriz and Leonel had the following children:
1) Matias de Cervantes Vera, b. Mar 1610 in Morelia.
2) Ines de Cervantes Vera, b. Feb 1612 in Morelia.
3) Magdalena de Cervantes, b. 1615 in Morelia.
4) Tomas de Cervantes
5) Leonel de Cervantes
6) Beatriz de Cervantes
I am not certain, though it seems likely that Beatriz’s son
One other thing to consider is the possible relationship between Leonor de Orozco cc Leonel de Cervantes and Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos cc Juan de Vargas Machuca (Cervantes?). The second couple are also mentioned in this post:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/19917
Juan de Vargas and Leonor has the following children:
1) Nicolas de Vargas Avalos, b. Mar 1648 in Guadalajara.
2) Juana de Vargas Orozco, b. May 1652 in Guadalajara.
3) Diego de Vargas Orozoco, b. Feb 1653 in Guadalajara.
4) Antonio de Vargas Orozco, b. Feb 1659 in Tlaltenango.
5) Juan Ramon de Cervantes m. Luisa Flores de Alcala in Puruandiro, 1674.
The last two required a dispensa, which connects Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos with the Orozco-Morcillo family of Michoacan. Here is the tree:
unnamed Orozco Morcillo – 1 – Leonor de Orozco Morcillo
Leonor Perez de Orozco Avalos – 2 – Juan Lucas de Alcala
Juan Ramon de Cervantes (pretenso) – 3 – Petronila Flores de Alcala (Hija natural)
N/A – 4 – Luisa Flores de Alcala
Hello Richard,
This is not my direct line, but I found the "diligencias testamentarias", and will for Beatriz Barroso where the name of Leonel de Cervantes and Thomas de Cervantes are mentioned.

Hi all,
I’m hoping to start some conversation about two Orozco-Villasenor sisters and a possible third who seem to have lived around Jalostotitlan and Tepatitlan in the early 1600s.
Hello Everyone,
I think I may have found a lead on our Leonel de Cervantes married to Leonor de Orozco. Their son Jose de Cervantes (married to Isabel Carranza) was a testigo For the dispensa of Miguel Hernandez Goyas and Luisa Becerra. As part of his testimony he admits to being a relative of Miguel's in the 4th degree (though, I think it is really 3rd and 4th degree). Here is the link to the dispensa and Jose's testimony:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6TSK-5G?i=276&cc=18745…
Miguel Hernandez was the son of Antonio Hernandez Goyas (Vasquez) and Leonor Casillas, the grandson of a Francisco Vasquez Hernandez, and a great-grandson of Martin Vasquez de Lara and Isabel Hernandez. Martin was the son of Martin Vasquez Zermeño and Ana Garcia de Miranda, the brother of Baltazar Vasquez de Lara (Luisa's ancestor) and of Elvira Gil de Lara Vasquez. Mariano Gonzalez Leal cites Elvira as married to a Jeronimo de Cervantes Orozco, with at least one daughter named
Hi all, I want to throw out a theory to see if anyone might have evidence that could confirm, or that contradicts, it regarding the parents of these sisters.
The crucial clue might be from Manny’s work on the Avalos family. He posted his notes on the children of Alonso de Avalos and Catalina de Orozco a few years ago:
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/23537
I had not noticed before, but it seems that the dates accompanying the earliest siblings he lists are for their confirmation. Is that correct?
If so that opens the possibility of the daughters being the children of this couple. The only name missing from the list is Petronila de Orozco Villasenor cc Alvaro de Ornelas, who seems the be the eldest of the sisters. The other two, Maria and Leonor, seem to be within the right range for their ages to be identified with the two daughters of Alonso and Catalina of that name.
For example, Maria de Avalos Orozco was baptized in San Francisco del Rincon in Jun 1622, while her father
I descend from Petronila Orosco Villaseñor and Alvaro Ornelas el Mozo. Thank you tocayo for identifying her siblings. Hopefully your findings lead to their parents.
Maria de Orozco Villasenor and Jose Sanchez de Mendoza, are the parents of at least two children. Their son Melchor Sanchez de Mendoza is married on 15/May/1687 in Tepatitlán, Jalisco to Isabel Gutierrez De Hermosillo (daughter of Sebastian Gutierrez De Hermosillo Aceves and Maria Galindo (aka Becerra). A second son is Lucas Sanchez De Mendoza married to Josefa Camacho Riquelme.
Thanks again,
Rick A. Ricci
I don't know anything about these families but I see a mention of Ornelas and Mendoza and was wondering if anyone knows the parents of Jose de Ornelas y Mendoza that was born about 1650 and married to Melchora Perez de Frias. I'm thinking it may be Alvaro de Ornelas and Petronila de Orozco.
Danny,
I am not sure who the parents of José de Ornelas married to Melchora Pérez de Frías are. Based on the timeline and place and the fact the surname Villaseñor plays a key role in this line (see below) it almost requires him to be the son of Alvaro de Ornelas y Hurtado de Mendoza and Petronila de Orozco, but anything is possible. He does have two sons that used the surname "Ornelas y Villaseñor" which a nice clue for us. I have the following children all baptized and/or married in Teocaltiche:
1. Bernardo de Ornelas y Villaseñor married on to María Gabriela Sánchez Carrillo on 23 May 1731.
2. Luis de Ornelas y Villaseñor, baptized on 24 Jan 1677 and present marriage information on 22 Jun 1708 to marry Matiana Ruiz de la Fuente y Ulloa, daughter of Antonio Ruiz de la Fuente and Mariana de Ulloa.
3. José baptized on 17 Oct 1681. Melchora uses Pérez [de Frías]
4. Felipe baptized on 9 Sep 1683 - Melchora uses Pérez [de Frías]
5. Gerónimo baptized on 18 Aug 1686 - Melchora uses
Through a marriage dispensation we know that Melchora Perez de Frías is a daughter of Diego Pérez de Frías and Elena de Sotomayor.
Rick A. Ricci
Confirmed on 31 Dec 1666, in Teocaltiche, was Melchora de los Rs hija de Pedro Ps y de Elena de Sotomayor. Left image:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-QTRH-7?i=43&cc=1874591
Jose de Ornelas and Melchora de los Reyes also appear in the 1681 Teocaltiche padron, living in the household of Diego Perez and Elena de Sotomayor.
Manny Diez Hermosillo
Thank you Rick and Manny! This solidifies the connection: the confirmation, padrón and dispensa. Do you think "de los Reyes" is more of a personal name in this case or can we follow Melchora's genealogy to link this as a surname? Rick would you have more information on the dispensa you mentioned, I would like to analyze it.
Thanks,
Daniel MdTC
You’re welcome, Daniel. “Melchora de los Reyes” was apparently an ancestral name that was handed down in various alteña families. I think Holcombe traced the name back to Rodrigo de Carvajal y Ulloa and Melchora de los Reyes, who would be the progenitor in Los Altos. Their daughter, also Melchora de los Reyes, married Luis Delgadillo de Frias, from whom descend the Delgadillo de Frias and Perez de Frias. Most holders of the name would alternate between “Melchora de los Reyes” and “Melchora + surname/s.”

This is great information. Thanks everyone. Manny, do you know how Melchora Perez de Frias descends from Luis Delgadillo de Frias and Melchora de los Reyes? If Melchora Perez de Frias is the daughter of Diego Perez de Frias and Diego is the son of Juan Perez de Frias and Ana Lopez, is Juan Perez de Frias the son of Luis Delgadillo de Frias and Melchora de los Reyes?
Dear Daniel,
Many years ago when discussing the Vasquez Baca you mentioned that Petronila de Orozco might be a sister of Leonor de Orozco married to Juan Alcalá. What made the connection for you and do you still believe they are sisters?
Thank you and everyone else for the information about the Ornelas descendants. I have some additional notes on Jose de Ornelas Mendoza that I will try to put together and share soon.
Richard
Dear Richard,
The Leonor Orosco that is married to Juan Alcala y Zamora does not have Cervantes as part of her surname. She is a descendant of Diego Orosco Tovar and Ana De Mejia ((Mexia). I also descend from them. This Diego is a brother to Capitán Juan De Villaseñor Orosco that is married to Catalina Cervantes.
This Leonor Orosco is the daughter of Juan Lucas Morcillo and Isabel Orosco.(daughter of Pedro Hernandez De Aguilera and Beatriz Orozco y Tovar) ( Beatriz is the daughter of Diego Orosco De Tovar and Ann
I misunderstood your earlier post. My misunderstooding was that Petronila had a sibling with the surname Cervantes, but you wrote that it is the wife of Leonel Cervantes, Leonor Orosco, that is the sibling of Petronila; so we are still left wondering which of the Villaseñor brothers is the ancestor to these sisters.

Does anyone know who are the parents of Catalina de Orozco that's married to Alonso de Avalos?
Does anyone know who are the parents of Catalina de Orozco that's married to Alonso de Avalos?
I don't know who her parents were, but one website claims she was the daughter of Juan Lucas Murillo and Isabel de Orozco.
Hello!
You may want to research the couple Juan Corona and Maria Josefa Guevara. Juan and Miguel my be the same person.

I would like for someone who understands Spanish better than I do to look at a document and tell me what it is about. It is about my ancestors Pedro and Juan Casillas.
It is a baptism for Juan and Pedro Casillas. Their parents are Domingo Casillas and Ana de Rosas. Both parents are identified as “Indios”.
Hola Primos.
Hi Pauline,
I guess no one replied. I am also interested in this topic. My line is
Pedro de Anda I (1530-1619) and most notably, Isabel Gutierres de Altamirano (1535-?)
These are their descendants, my ancestors:
Their son:
Pedro de Anda Altamirano II (1551-1619)-Beatriz González de Castañeda (1556-1573)
Their son
Capt Estevan de Anda Altamirano - Catalina Gomez de Portugal
Their son
Pedro III - Catalina de Viduarre
His daughter
Antonia (not likely the daughter of Catalina) - Antonia is why I'm here.
I am curious if you ever found anything concrete on Isabel Guiterres de Altamirano. I am checking out some stuff on FamilySearch which is never accurate but usually leads me to a new find after a few days. I will check in again if it pans out. While I try to figure out who Antonia De Anda y Altamirano's father is.
One of my sets of 10th great grandparents were Antonia de Anda Altamirano (allegedly de Viduarre) and Pedro Mexia (Mejia).

Erik R.
