Gracias Martha.

Hello

I just wanted to add that I am going through records of death in Aguascalients, and I have seen parbulo use with a 4 day old infant and a five year old child. In general, I have seen it used a lot in the death records - makes one appreciate modern times...

Hi Paul,

If I'm not mistaken, "Parbulo/a" stands for "minor/infant", My Dad still uses the term once in a while to refer to Kindergarden school, he sometimes calls it "escuela para Parbulitos". Hope it helps.

Roy,

Congrats! What a find, I am not too familiar with the Choperena family, but it has been established that they are Navarrense, It is also important to look for his Dispensa de Ultramarino in the Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara, a document in which a foreigner or peninsular had to receive permission in order to marry in New Spain. That document will give you lots of new insight in the life of D. Pedro de Choperena, who he was, where he traveled and what he did.

Best of luck,

Juan Martin Suares del Real from Reinos de Castilla and h/w Lorenza de la Madera.
Hernado de Escobedo from Toledo and h/w Mari Illescas y Diaz.
Pedro Sanchez from Sevilla and h/w Margarita de Covarrubias.

So where do I search for the Dispensa's?

Roy,

My great-grandfather was born in Spain and his Información Matrimonial has
a lot of the information that can be found in the Dispensa. However, you
should attempt to acquire both records.

The Dispenas are found in the Matrimonios of Guadalajara found at
http://goo.gl/z61Za

Claudia Casillas and other contributors are indexing the names in the
Dispensas at posting them at http://www.guadalajaradispensas.com/. The
surname Choperena doesn't show up in the index yet (I would have already
told you if it did) so you would have to go page by page in every single
volume that includes the year 1801 in order to find the Dispensa to find it
yourself. If you are going to take time to do that please index the page
and names found in each volume and send that info to Claudia.

The marriage of D. Pedro Jose Choperena y de D. Maria Bautista Yndart took

Hi Linda, I believe this is what it says:

Tabardillo is typhus, I think.

Comentario

Thank you. I saw that it was the 22nd of January, 1785, but didn't know what preceded his name. It looks like a better than average funeral paid for by his wife Maria Antonia Gomez. If you are correct in your assumption, it looks like he died of typhus at home. Sad, because his last child was born 8 months later.

As for the word "cuadrillero", I don't know where I came up with that. I must have combined two words while trying to use a translator.

Thank you, again. I appreciate your help. Now, if I only knew how to find where he came from...

I only recently found out that my husband's gggg-grandparents, Nicolas Garcia and Maria de San Juan were not Indians, they were espanoles, and Maria de San Juan did have a surname that the records didn't always include. I found so many couples named Nicolas Garcia and Maria de San Juan, and I picked the wrong one. She used several surnames---Trillo, Villalpando, Belasco, etc. We finally found out that she was born to Antonio Trillo and Mariana Villalpando in Aguascalientes. Mariana's parents were Diego Villalpando and Ysabel Losano de Gardea. Mariana had siblings named Gertrudis, Joseph and Christobal, but no Tomas, not that I have found. I didn't find any of my husband's in Leon, Guanajuato.

You can't send attachments to NR, only links, or you can upload a file to Nuestros Ranchos.

I have Fray Angelico's book "Origins of New Mexico Families", and the transcription for the marriage of Juan de Villa El Pando in there says simply that he was from "La Villa de Leon", not from any Villa de Conil or whatever. Amalia,

Yes, I know that Fray Angelico referenced the DM for the Villapando in his book (he quoted his sources as footnotes). He read the entry as "Villa de Leon" as he stated in his ONMF book. Someone else who did a transcription for the PDF files read the entry as Villa de Con (il?). I said in another post that I thought it read Villa de Leon (not Con) and the "il?" is an abbreviation for iho legitimo, since the names of his parents appear immediately after.

I was hoping that either George or Daniel would verify what I think it really says. You said you were waitng for the complete copy of the DM or Marriage, so you don't have even the part that says "Villa de Leon" that someone thinks says "Villa de Con (il?)"?

The two links you sent before were both for Ambrosio; I didn't see the image for Juan Villalpando that supposedly says "Villa de Con (il?)".

in Sierra de Pinos in 1751 where they baptize a daughter. They are linked to Matehuala, SLP and

My 6th great grandfather Capt. Joseph Victor de Camino y Trasgallo married Josefa Gertrudis
Fernandez de Villalpando, she was baptized in San Matias, Sierra de Pinos, Zac on 16 Jan 1762
and married in the same place 30 Nov 1783. She was daughter of Joseph Nolasco Fernandez de

who appears to be linked to Santa Maria del Rio, SLP.

Josefa's brother Joseph Maria Fernandez de Villalpando worked closely with Francisco de Fagoaga,
I marques del Apartado in Mexico City and Puebla.

All this Villalpando talk recently has sparked my interest in following this line that I know so little about.

Joseph Rafael Romo Alba was baptized in Aguascalientes which is why she was
going to look in that area. She is trying to find out which one of the

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NBQ8-FBN

Would you happen to have copies of these baptisms? They are not found
online as far as I can tell. They were grandchildren of my ancestors Miguel

The furthest ancestor that Denise can find was mentioned as being from
Aguascalientes even though there is a possibility he was actually from La
Chona.

rmcneal,

I have a similar situation with my Paternal Grandmother's line. Her last name is "Ceja" from Las Zarquillas, Villamar, Michoacan. Rumors/family stories say her family's orignal last name was "Zamora" and that they changed it to "Ceja" during La Cristeada war or Mexican revolution because they were being persecuted by the goverment, but I have discovered that they (my ancestors) have been alternating Ceja & Zamora for some generations before the Mexican revolution. Some of my ancestors were baptized "Ceja" and marry as "Zamora" and vice-versa. I've found many documents altenating these 2 last names during the 1800's. I honestly have no idea why they did it, hope to one day find out.

Hi Esther,

I have not placed all the pieces together on my "Ceja" line, becuase I have been busy/focused on my direct paternal line, the Hernandez from Ayo el chico & La Barca, Jalisco. But I can almost "bet" that your research on the "Ceja" line, will take you to the Villamar, Jiquilpan, Guaracha, Zamora & Sahuayo Michoacan Archives. I'm not sure if that's where early Ceja families first establised, but there sure is a lot of "Cejas" in that region of Michoacan (Region Cienega/Near Chapala lake). Hope we can make some connections, though I don't have much info on this line yet.

My wifes family also interchanged de la Santa Cruz and lomelin. I found out that it was because an ancestor was born out of wedlock so he used his mothers surname de la Santa Cruz but her grandchildren used both surnames and the siblings branches off with some family members choosing one or the other surname. These lomelin and Santa cruz were from Sam Juan de Los Lagos and Sam Miguel el alto Jalisco

Yes - I have come across situations like this and it can be very
frustrating. The further back you go the more variations you will find with
surnames. It is not uncommon for siblings to use different surnames,
sometimes it is simple like using the mother's surname instead of the
fathers, but other times they use the name of a grandparent so it looks like
the name came out of nowhere.

I have found good information from freedom on information act request to US Citizenshlip and Immigration services some papers included passport pictures and in their own words some of my ancestors history (those of recent years and those who migrated to the US). Hello Anita,

From the Search Results page in the Family Search database you can select the drop down menu by clicking the little triangular icon to the right of the persons name, this will reveal more info i.e. DOB, arrival date, port, and other details, on that list it will say "record has photo" followed by yes or no. If there is a photo all you have to do is click on the name of the person and there is usually a link on the following page where you can download the record with photo (though you may have to sign in/create account etc). However if the image is not available the page will give you more details, film # etc. to facilitate an independent search and browse through of images and then all you have to do is find the records and go page by page to search for you relevant document/pictures.
Hope that helps!

Hey everyone,
Just want to share a find.  I'm looking for Castaneda in Jerez, Zac.  I came across a Tomas Castanon with parents Gregorio Castanon and Isabel Galvan in Ermita de los Correas, which are the names of my great-grandmother's parents.  On a hunch, I looked up the baptismal record and found all the right names, including grandparents. The priest made a mistake on the paternal last name!  I feel like Sherlock Holmes.  :-)

Still haven't found my great-grandmother Vita Castaneda Galvan, but I've found some of her brothers. Time for bed...

I have loved Mariachi music for some time since my husband introduced it to me years ago. I got to go to a large mariachi music concert in Las Vegas with my mother- and father-in-law years ago, and I had a wonderful time. As I speak very little Spanish, I don't understand the words, but I really enjoy the music and the singing.

I noticed a real similarity between Mariachi music and German "Oomm Pah Pah" music and mentioned it to my mother-in-law. She said that was possible because there were a lot of German settlers in Jalisco as well as other parts of Mexico. (I did remember seeing a graveyard in Central Baja where all the names were German!)

Does anyone think that there could be a connection between the German music and Mariachi music? I hear the German music every year at Oktoberfest and it really reminds me of the Mariachi music, too. However, it doesn't have the emotion or heart that Mariachi music has in it!

Yes

German polkas do sound a lot like the mariachi sound. In the state of Sonora next to Baja, I see some French names, but I don't know when they emigrated to Mexico. Perhaps Germans settled near there too.

You are confusing Mariachi music and Norteño music. Mariachi music is
identified as being from Jalisco. There is no evidence that Mariachi was
influenced by Germans. Norteño music is just that, northern, and doesn't
have a place in a discussion of the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and
Aguascalientes.

Armando,
you're correct to note the differences in music between polka-influenced Norteño (i.e., northern) music and mariachi. However, polka did influence the music of Zacatecas in the form of the "Tamborazo" genre. If you want to hear an example of this, check out a few songs from my uncle Victor Gonzalez ("El Tigre de Zacatecas") on YouTube:

1. Tus Vacasiones : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2toS9CzPHg&feature=context-chv
and
2. La Del Morral : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOvUcv_muYc&feature=plcp

The Tamporazo is derived from Banda from Sinaloa, probably popularized during the revolution. Polish immigrants introduced the polka in Sinaloa and the Banda style was probably spread during the revolution in the early 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Mexico#Banda

I read your posting about the myth of French blood in Jalisco. With a last name like "Michel" my father always said we descended from a French soldier who stayed in Jalisco after the Franco intervention. He knew several different versions from other Jalisiences about how their descendants spread along the Ameca or Armeria river valley all the way to Colima. I think he honestly believed it. When I started doing genealogy research in 1990, within a short time I found the Michel surname present in Jalisco as early as the mid 1500's. I think my dad was disapointed when I proved his theory or story wrong. Hello Everyone,  I've been doing my research on my grandfather's Valdez, (Valdes) line.  He was born in La Estancia, Tepetongo, but his line comes from Jerez (Los Cuervos).  I've been able to go back to my 4X gr grandfather and there the records have a very large gap.  From 1835 to beyond 1849 no records exist on Family Search. I was wondering if anyone has been successful finding records for this period.  Perhaps I've missed something.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.  It's particularly frustrating, because I think I know who my 5X gr grandfather is but need some records to confirm.

Gracias!

The bride's parents appear to be Juan Manuel de Exqueda (difunto) and Maria Antonia Antonia Sanchez Fuerontes (?).

I hope this helps a little. The spellings might be a little off, but that is what I thought I read.
