Alice,

On second thought, it could be Velis or something similar, because it's so faint
and obscure, it's difficult to decipher what the letters could be.

Alice, It looks like Velis to me. If you look at the opposite page #547, the V in Valenzuela looks similar.

Alicia and Aurora,
Thank you so much for your input.
I didn't want to influence anyone with my thoughts.  But I'm going with Velis.  Actually, the V was the only thing I was pretty sure of because it is identical to the priest's signature of his surname Valencuela. Then there is the dot that appears to be part of an "i" second to the last letter.  But we know how spots and dots appear on these old records, so I wasn't truly sure about that being an "i".  This is the first time for Velis as a surname in my family tree, so I really didn't have a clue.  I'm guessing then that Velis is a variation of Velez or Veles?  Again, thanks so much for your help and if I've made a connection with anyone in our group, I'd love to hear from you.   Alice Blake

My wild guess would be Manuela Ruis. I looked at the capital R up above where it

Does Ruis fit in with your current family lines or would this be a new surname?

Researching Francisca Cruz Vasquez

Francisca Cruz Vasquez was born in San Cosme, Villa de Cos, Zacatecas, MX to Dolores Cruz and Lucinana Cruz on June 8th, 1858. I am trying to find out who her brothers and sisters were.

Comentario

There is a Filomena Vasquez, daughter of Dolores Vasquez and Luciana Crus, baptized 2 Apr 1853, San Cosme, Villa De Cos, Zacatecas. This film is online; details from image 43 are:

Filomena Vasquez, baptized 2 Apr 1853, San Cosme, 15 days old, born in Sierralira
Parents: Dolores Vasquez & Luciana Crus
Paternal grandparents: Bartolo Vasquez & Luisa Acosta
Maternal grandparents: Fabian Crus & Nicolasa Moncivais

Francisca's baptism on 8 Jun 1858, is at image 357 on the same film. Parents/grandparents are the same.

I did not find any other children of Dolores and Luciana.

Hopefully, this is helpful.

Finding Gabriel Chavez

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the site and wish to introduce myself and my quest for information on my husband's family in Aguascalientes.

Comentarios

Comentario

Gabriel Chavez had 4 esposas! First Maria Vicenta Peralta on 5 Aug 1880, then Eustacia Peralta on 4 Jul 1888, then Gerbacia Medina on 13 Feb 1893 and last Refugio Araiza on 29 Jul 1895. Each spouse died before the next marriage. Thank you for asking! Carol Adams-Ramos

Comentario

Carol:

Welcome to the group! Some questions for you... where did you get the information on your husband's great-grandfather's wives? You seem to have the exact dates, but did not mention the locations of the weddings. If you know where the weddings took place, the first marriage record should list Gabriel Chavez's parents, place of birth and age. That would give you some very valuable clues on where to find his baptism record or one of his sibling's baptism records which would then provide their grandparents' names and you would be back another two generations.

Comentario

Carol:

Gabriel Chavez's last marriage to Refugio Araiza appears on familysearch.org in the IGI in Asientos, Aguascalientes (batch number M019875). It shows his parents' names were Pedro Chavez and Maria Medina. The other marriages appear in the familysearch.org pilot and show his mother's name variously as Maria or Aniceta Medina.

There is a baptism record for Jose Gabriel Chavez on 25 Mar 1860 in the familysearch.org pilot born to Pedro Chavez and Maria Medina in Asientos, Aguascalientes (batch number I066681). I am pretty sure this is your man. You should be able to pull up the image of the baptism record on the familysearch.org pilot site (since it is in Aguascalientes) and find the grandparents' names.

Gabriel had at least two siblings:
- Jose Chavez Medina baptized 25 Mar 1862 in Asientos
- Jose Macedonio Chavez baptized 14 Sep 1864 in Asientos, married to Fernanda Nino 12 Nov 1884 in Asientos

I found an entry for my elusive great grandmother on the new Family Search. this record shows two additional parents in addition to the ones I had as her parents.(three sets of parents).

Unless the submitters email address is given then you won't be able to
find out who this is. As for source documents if you are fortunate
enough to have the location be online as in some of the Jalisco records
then just go to the online records and advance quickly to find the dates
given for your great grandmother. If not you have to do a place search
and find the films available for this area. then you would find the film
that corresponds to the dates for your great grandmother and order that
film.

Verification as always is the key to all information found online.

I am hoping someone can help me locate dispensations for the year 1742. That is obviously a year that does not appear to be in any particular film but could be in a number of films that appear to be amalgams of various periods...

The dispensation I am looking for is:

En ocho días del mes de enero de mil setecientos y cuarenta y dos en esta parroquia e iglesia casé y velé a Manuel de Santa María Covarrubias, hijo legítimo de Mathias Covarrubias y de Petra Saldaña, españoles vecinos de esta jurisdicción en el rincón de Totatiche con Petra de la Cruz Grano, hija legítima de Joseph Grano y de Efigenia Covarrubias españoles vecinos de dicho rincón a quienes el Señor ??? Hi Rose,

I think you have dealt with Dispensas more than I have. I have a dispensa
dated in a marriage record "Dispensados el 2 de abril de 1772" The marriage
took place in Calvillo Aguascalientes and it only mentions that they shared
two lines of consanguinity third degree and the other third with fourth degree.

I noticed many online "films" have the year 1772, are there certain films
in the Diocesis that are strictly dispensas or are they all mixed with other
records.

Joseph, many people don't know how to get to the scan files where they
can actually search for the records on their own:

A. Go to Familysearch.org
B. Go to “Browse by Location”
C. Press the “USA, Canada, and Mexico” link

On the "Historical Records Collections," go down the page to:

Mexico, Catholic Church Records
Mexico, Chiapas, Catholic Church Records, 1558-1978
Mexico, Civil Registration, 1860-1950
Mexico, Guanajuato, Catholic Church Records, 1576-1984
Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records
Mexico, Morelos, Catholic Church Records, 1598-1969
Mexico, Nayarit, Catholic Church Records, 1596-1967
Mexico, Puebla, Catholic Church Records, 1545-1970
Mexico, San Luis Potosí, Catholic Church Records, 1586-1970
Mexico, State of Mexico, Catholic Church Records

To the right of each category, you will find "Browse Images."

As an example, go to “Mexico, Catholic Church Records,” then:

A. To the right of that link, press “Browse Images”
B. You will see a list of the Mexican states

Hello Everyone,
I am researching my family currently from the Jerez Baptism records for 1836.  I
have noticed a large amount of record with no grandparents listed.  Instead, it
says "abuelos no dio rason". I've only seen this so far in the Jerez records but
don't know what it means since it's on so many records.

Hope someone can tell me what that means??

Thanks,

Barbara Andrews

Thanks for your comments,,,,that makes sense. I had previously been going through the baptism records for Tepetongo, which is close by and occasionally found a padre desconosido or something like that. However, in these records for Jerez, it's very disproportionate and always refers to both set of grandparents.

Thanks,
Barbara

I have seen this mentioned all over the place different areas and time periods.
Usually it meant for one reason or another the grandparents were and are not
to be mentioned. Possibly denotes an iligitimate child, or no recognized father,
ethe possibilities are endless. I have also seen one child in a family where the
a grandparents are not mentioned whereas other children in the same family
do mention the grandparents.

Alice,

One of the reasons why some individuals have have more than one batch number or reference number is because. Some of the microfilms in the Family History Library, have been extracted more than once. And then some areas have been filmed more than once also.

As for how you can have 2 different batch numbers, for the same film number. that depends on when it was extracted. Because in the early extraction, the information was sent to the IGI. And the program was trying to use the same record template for all types of record collections. So for the Mexico and Latin America collections, they were trying to apply, an US record template to the records. Such as, on a christening record, the extractors were told to only extract the name of the child, christening date, and the names of the parents. They were told to disregard all other information in the record (such as birth date, birth place, names of grandparents, etc.). Then came along other record collections, such as the

Jonathan,
Thank you!  The reason for the different batch numbers makes sense now.   Although they both started with a C, only one worked in a batch search.  I was hoping that the reference number referred to an additional resource beyond the film itself.  Thanks again for your help.

Welcome to the Group! It seems you have some very surnames that involve in all of our research those of the Spaniard families of Padilla, Moreno, Muñoz. I can bet my money (as long as these are from Los Altos) Which they are! That they are the "de Padilla y Dávila", Moreno de Ortega, and either Muñoz de Hermosillo or Muñoz de la Barba families! These and all our other spanish families teneded to drop part of their name over time, when it was commonly known that everyone was obviously related after 400 years of inbreeding. I would totally go after these families since they might be the ones that we have info for sure, and are commonly researched a lot. I will help you on these families as best as I can. -Daniel Méndez del Camino

Hello, my name is Jenny Tomasello (Olmos) and I'm just beginning my research into my family tree. Unfortunately I do not have much information to go on as my family lost touch with my father when I was about 2 yrs old(adopted); so if anyone has any tips to guide me in the right direction I would be very greatful =)

My father (Steven Andrew Olmos - first born) was born (3 Aug 1950) to Gil Olmos and Juanita Almeyda when Gil was 60 yrs old.

My grandfather, Gil Olmos, was born 1 Sep 1891 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco to parents Juan Olmos and Andrea Aguilera. This information I was able to find on FamilySearch.

Again, I would be extremely greatful if anyone could give me ideas on beginning my search

Thank you!
Jenny

My experience, for the few areas I've researched, is that the matrimonial investigations are all together (at least in Aguascalientes). There tends to be more for indians than for the Spanish, but the relative numbers would depend on the community, most likely because there were more indians. They are very often not in chronological order. You may need to look at the volume or two before or after the period you are interested in. I've also seen significant gaps, but this is more common for the older documents.

From the FHL catalog there is no indication that the investigations were separated for the different groups. Of course, this does not mean that they weren't.

Paul:

Per the informacion matrimonial that I have dated 8 Feb 1710 in Aguascalientes
Bartolome (Gomez) Rendon was the son of the Treasurer of Zacatecas Capt.
Francisco Gomez Rendon and Maria de Luna. He married Maria Macias Valadez
who was baptized 9 May 1683 in Aguascalientes she was the daughter of
Marcos Macias Valadez and Maria Ruiz de Esparza.

I have a 4th child for Bartolome and Maria, Ana Macias Valadez (used her maternal name)
she died 9 Dec 1775 in Aguascalientes married to Cristobal de los Santos Bustos
they had numerous children.

Maria de Luna was the daughter of Marcos Alvarez Tostado and Maria de Luna there
last two were the founders of the Alvarez de Luna line which lasted for some generations
or so.

Hi Paul,

Im glad you found it useful. As for Francisco Gomez Rendon he was captain
and royal treasurer of the city of Zacatecas. You'll have to look at the notaries
of Zacatecas and PARES if you want specific documents.

I do know he had a brother named Capt. Sebastian Gomez Rendon also
vecino of Zacatecas. Im not sure if they were born in Zacatecas or
Teocaltiche. More than likely they were born in Zacatecas but sadly
we will never have its records at our disposle.

I have a reference that their mother was a Catarina Arreola but never
proved it not sure who this woman was or where she came from.

Eventually Francisco Gomez Rendon married Maria de Luna a
native of Teocaltiche she was espanola and belonged to the Alvarez
Tostado family.

Marcos Alvarez Tostado married Maria de Luna (they're daughter
was Maria de Luna) these were vecinos of Teocaltiche. Together
they started the Alvarez de Luna which lasted couple of generations.

Marcos Alvarez Tostado was the son of Juan
