I was looking for ranchos not far from where you are looking, specifically Sauz de los Marquez. The search is a bit frustrating. I used specific keywords to try to find things. It really depends on what the map title words are. The map may contain a lot more than just what the title words include.
The bottom line is that I spent a lot of time and did not succeed on the ranchos. But I did find some very interesting maps of the wider area.

Unfortunately, we haven't indexed that many films from the latter part of the 1800s. We're focusing on the colonial era 1500s-1820s for now. Should that change and we find the dispensa you are looking for, I'll let you know.

Yes, taking a look at your family tree, we do share ancestors. To begin with, Valencia. You also share some Munguia ancestors with my wife who's paternal roots are in Tamazula.

If you'd like some more information about your Valencia roots, please let me know at:

daniel_serna@hotmail.com

I would be more than happy to share some Valencia-related dispensas and such.

Hello Erlinda,

The link you provided contains the core of the documents that were written up by the "Antiguo Obispado de Michoacan". They not only contain matrimonial dispensations but all sorts of other documents. As you've found out, there's no real order (beyond chronological) as to what the films contain nor can you find the towns you are looking for in each film. I, along with a lot of wonderful volunteers, have been indexing some of the films. You can see the indexes on valldoliddispensas.com.

I have done quite a bit of research and have built an ancestry.com tree that contains dispensas related to my ancestors that were from the same towns that you have called out. If you don't mind sharing what couple you are looking the dispensa for, I might have the information already that I can share with you.

Let me know,

Hi Linda,

Thanks for sharing this! Ramón and Melaquíades had a daughter named María Lucía Altagracia baptized on 7 March 1890, born on 3 Mar 1890 in Zamora. Her madrina was María del Carmen Fernández, a possible aunt of ours--I would figure, I don't have her in my archives. If they were dispensed at segundo grado de consanguinidad, they would, in effect be, first cousins. I don't think we would have much trouble reconstructing this tree, even without the dispensa.

Hi Jess, when I researched my ancestors I found that ancestry was a great tool as they have death records from the Civil Registration (after 1850s) indexed, meaning you can do searches by name. However, the church records on deaths are not indexed and the search gets more complicated that way. I hope this can be helpful, not sure if that's what you were looking for

I have found most of my info on familysearch.org which has been amazing. I am not finding a whole lot of death records though. I love to walk old cemeteries, and would be interested to see if my ancestors are buried in the cemetery with legible stones. There aren't any stones transcribed from the cemetery that i can find.

Saludos,

Hello everyone

I came across this information on the Informacion matrimonial of Tomas Castañeda con Josefa Orta (3.grandparents) as they were related... the record I'm referring to is:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-K49X-5V?i=119&cc=18745…

Does this mean that there would have been a dispensa? or is the little piece of paper is the priest giving them the okay?

What are your thoughts?

Miguel Castañeda was married to María Velasco. I believe that Damiana Castañeda y Velasco is most likely their descendant. Miguel and Maria were married 20/Feb/1621 in Zamora, Nueva España (Michoacán, México). More research is needed to confirm thi information.

A dispensa would not have been required as the relationship is between the 4th and 5th degrees. You are very lucky that they provided this as it gives you even more information then an average dispensa. Dispensas are for fourth degree or less, which is third cousin or closer.

From the information that we see in this record, and other marriage and baptismal records, I was able to put this family tree together. Here is this Castaneda family tree:

Castañeda

1. Pedro Ramirez and Damiana Castañeda y Velasco are the parents of
1.1. Nicolas Ramirez Castañeda married to María Josefa Bejarano Monroy, parents of (1.1.1 José Miguel and 1.1.2 Salvador)

1.1.1 José Miguel Giordano Castañeda married to María Candelaria Lopez,
1..1.1.1Juan Antonio Castaneda Lopez married Rita Gertrudis Plancarte
1.1.1.1.1. María Josepha Castañeda married to José Vicente Orta Del Río
1.1.1.1.1.1. Vicente Orta Castañeda and María Ana Alcaras
1.1.1.1.1.1.1. Vicenta Orta married to 1.1.1.2.1.1.1. Tomas Castañeda

Comentario

Wow Rick!

This is amazing... you have made my day!!

I was indeed lucky to have that piece of paper with the relationship outlined and the family tree,

For the longest time I thought I had come to a brick wall with that line of my ancestors as the baptism record for Tomas Castañeda said his grandmother was Josefa Alcaraz and not Guadalupe Garcia (our common ancestor), but I never bothered to check the rest of his siblings until you pointed it out for me, now I realized it was a mistake as they often made in those times with changing or switching names.

Their grandchild Primitivo Castañeda Orta would later marry my second great aunt Felipa Serrano y Gutiérrez de Mendoza on 1 May 1878 in Tamazula.

Thank you for sharing, I'm glad we share a close connection. Lots of intermarriage between the Méndez de Torres, Chávez, Castañeda, Orta, Alvarez del Castillo and Ochoa Garibay families in Tamazula--it's definitely a project fitting each piece together.

Hi Rick,

I don't have anything solid on Juan María García de Alba and Isabel Martín del Campo. However, I believe he may be the son of Juan García de Alba y Ortega Maldonado and his wife, Juana de Robles Rico y Villaseñor, they settled in Ameca and had numerous succession between 1695-1715. I hope the following clues assist (may already have these) us on some of Juan and Isabel children's baptism. You can see their padrinos were relatives:

So, I looked at what you shared and it appears to me that you’ve done a thorough job. I think you’re on the right track and I agree with your findings. Yes, it would be better if all of the names and ages were consistent and 100% accurate across all of the records, but I think you should feel confident with what you’ve discovered so far. (Every time I find myself in your situation, coping with uncertainty in the records, I remind myself that many of my ancestors were illiterate and didn’t carry ID in their wallets.)

You didn’t mention the following so I am including them here.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and looking into it, I really do appreciate it. I will continue with my research w/the ancestors I have found and I feel much better about it now. I already had the other marriage document BUT you don't know how excited I am for your new find the padron, about two weeks ago I went through this book but didn't find anything on them but I was looking for the ranch of Tarimoro. You don't know how happy I am that you found it and so quick. Josefa Hernandez was his grandmother and I think you right about that being her on the other page. So I wonder if the other Hernandez in that ranch are family members as well.

Once again thank you!!! :-) You have motivated me again to continue with my research, maybe one day I will find my great great fathers and other two childrens baptism documents.

Hi,

So I have found several new documents on the parents of Buenaventura Hernandez Martínez and I’m having doubts again hehe. I found death reg. Of another son of Juan Hernández and María Guadalupe .
José Catasino Hernández of Tarimoro.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-FQ9L-ZW

I also found the death reg. For Juan Hernández and he passed away 1844.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-FQ9G-66

So there is no way that he is the father of Buenaventura Hernandez because he was born around 1850. I did find two other documents showing Guadalupe having two other children out of wedlock in el rancho viejo where they lived. So I’m pretty sure it’s the same person.

So the only reason I think this might be her is because of the daughter Sanjuana on her marriage reg. It say she is an hija

it's a conditional baptism. because they couldn't verify whether the child was validly baptized. there could be lots of reasons but the most likely one is that there was an emergency baptism because the child was sick and the person baptizing may not have been sure that it was done properly.

Thanks for your response, you are right in your answer as this child died shortly after, but I wondered why bajo condicion, it must have been very obvious that the baby would die soon so they must have performed an emergency baptism.

Don’t believe the family tree that some people post which shows Manuel Coria Peralta as the son of Conquistador Diego Coria. He was a descendant of his, but not his son. Manuel Coria Peralta Regado descends from the Lopez Peralta family. Through this line you will find French ancestry in your dna.

Hi Frank,

I agree with Rick. Please provide more information on your findings: names, dates, locations and weblinks to the documents you have. To be specific, my Duran and Muñoz lines are from Nochistlan, Zacatecas which is in the southern part of the state and only a few kilometers from Jalisco. My first documented Duran is Juan Ximon Duran Duque who married Regina de Aguayo around 1625. One of their daughters, Maria Duran Aguayo, married Nicolas Muñoz de Leon, my first documented Muñoz, in Nochistlan on May 6, 1640. All the Duran's I have researched have come from Juan Ximon and Regina. As for my the Muñoz, I have confirmed 2 different Muñoz lines in Nochistlan. My studies have found other Muñoz lines in the area referred to as "Los Altos de Jalisco". If I remember correctly one of those Muñoz lines was from Jalostotitlán, Jalisco.

Welcome, Frank!

Have you searched the church and civil records that are on Family Search? Go to familysearch.org and type in your family names. This site has most of the church and civil records digitized, and some of them have been indexed (in other words, volunteers transcribed the names and dates to help you find the records more clearly). You will need an account, but they're free to get. If you need more help, feel free to let us know. Here are the links to the church records for the state of Jalisco: https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https://www.familys…

Rick...thank you so much for your comment. If you know anything else or come upon information, I would appreciate the send to me. I will also add, that the Angels were listed as Mulattos & Color Quebrado in the 1790 census. My DNA also shows North African ancestry as well as some from the Middle East and "Jewish". My guess is that the Angels were "Marranos" or "Anusims", maybe from Morocco, Algiers or Tunisia. I see the Angel, Ocana and Ramirez names listed in Inquisition files quite frequently.

Comentario

New Mexico was considerered a safer place for Anusim to blend in as it was what we in the United States grew up calling “the Wild West.” I descend from Toribio Hernández Arellano who had cousins with the surname Sanchez who were Anusim that settled in New Mexico. I have a Villalpando ancestor that was born in Taos New Mexico because his parents had gone there to visit relatives. After his birth the family returned to Jalostotitlan, Jalisco. My Robledo ancestors moved from New Mexico to Los Altos De Villa Nueva, Nueva Galicia.( modern day “Los Altos De. Jalisco”).

I did much research of New Mexico ancestries when I researched the ancestral family tree of NFL quarterback Jim Plunkett. This past year I did some more research on New Mexico ancestries when I worked on my cousin’s husband’s ancestry. Work on his family tree was easy because he had many ancestors in common with Jim Plunkett.

Marcial Ángel de Ocana and María Ramirez are the parents of Juan Lorenzo Angel De Ocana.

Comentario

I will add that Lorenzo Angel was the son of (Francisco)Xavier and Maria Ramirez. Lorenzo is not listed in the 1750 census of Santa Fe, but his wife and child are in the home of Xavier and Maria Ramires. There are 4 other children associated with them: Maria Ynes, Gregorio, Maria Juana Caterina and Miguel.

My research will start by centering in the Cienega de Mata and Ojuelos de
Jalisco area and probably Aguascalientes as well looking for Durán and
Muñoz surnames. I'm still new to this, before finding "Nuestros Ranchos," I
recently began my search after finding a written copy of my grandfather's
birth record dated July 1877, at "Hacienda Cienega de Mata. Recently found
grandfather's parents marriage cert. from May 1868, Ledesma Ojuelos de
Jalisco on My Heritage site. Can't find much else on the area thus far,
don't want to encroach on anyone's research in this area of Jalisco, can
anyone point me where/which direction to go from here?

Thanks, Frank

Frank,

Cienega de Mata and Ojuelos are close to Aguascalientes. You may want to look there. Also if you tell us who you're looking for, we may already have them researched.

What does this symbol mean

Hi,

I am going through the baptism registrations looking for a great great mother and have noticed a circle with an X in the middle next to some of the names, does anyone know what it means?

Comentario

Record keepers used various symbols in the margins in registros and padrones and their usage was not uniform or consistent. In some instances the record creator shared with the reader what those symbols represented but often they did not, and so we may never know for sure their intended meaning.

In the second example you shared in this thread, the baptisms on image 480, the cross might represent that the individual later received another sacrament in the parish, such as the sacrament of matrimony. Or, perhaps it means that the baptism was performed as an act of charity (de limosna). I say this because a few individuals in the registro have sums above their names, like the 100 for María Franca. de la Luz española de la Barranca de las Viudas on image 485.

In your other example, from the padrón, we know the meaning behind the cross in the margin because the writer stated on the first page of the padrón the following:

“. . . el Padrón de esta Feligresía de Ayo el Chico: Los que van con

Thank you so much mr Alvarez for the explanation. I love learning new things and I like to understand what I’m researching. It has more meaning. :-)

Second opinion needed - Pueblo/Rancho name

Hi everyone,

I found my GG-Grand father's marriage record. I would greatly appreciate a second opinion trying to figure out the name of place he was from.

Thank you Esther! I thought so, just needed some confirmation.

It looks like El Saucito is actually closer to Santa Maria del Valle, than to San Miguel el Alto. Which makes sense, since many of their children (including my GGrandfather) were born near there.

Thank you,

Carlos

Below is the record ID for what could possibly be your family on www.familysearch.org. Many people have worked on this couple since 2011 but they were not merged togehter because the name Membrila, Manbrila, Mamvrila etc. had many spellings and Juana de Orosco is also Joanna de Orosco during this early period. There is also another couple named Francisco Nicolas married to Juana de Orosco during this time period though the Francisco Nicolas does not appear with a surname on many records so may not be the same couple as it was in Tonala, Jalisco.

Nicolas Mambrila
1710–Deceased • LTG7-TWL
Juana De Orosco
1712–Deceased • LTG7-Y5Y

Thanks for the record IDs, unfortunately, there's no record for the parents of Nicolas or Juana. In one of the marriage records for their daughter, Anna Maria Cc Juan Urbano Garcia says that she was from Valle de COtija, im assuming the parents were from cotija as well. I search for Francisco Nicolas and Juana De Orosco and i don't think they're the same couple. The earliest baptism record for them is 1697 she would atleast have to be 20 years old. Nicolas Membrila and Juana baptism record for daugter MAria Gertrudis is in Tamazula 1739 that would put her at almost 60. Their youngest Nicolas Jr was born about 1750, so i don't think it the same Couple, but i will locate the image for Francisco Nicolas and see what I can find.

Thank You very much

See if this opens for you. It is a map of Zacatecas from 1889 i believe. If it doesn't open, please let me know and I'll see if I can post it another way. I hope it is what you are looking for. My family was from that general area...Mezquital del Oro, Moyahua, Juchipila, etc
Sandra

I'm not sure if that is the one you are looking for, but it does seem to work if you copy and paste. That name just sounded very familiar to me.

My deepest appreciation for you taking time to answer my question. The link does open, Thank you so much. I don't see the name of the Tellos ranch on the map. Can you tell me if this is saying where to locate/pinpoint the ranch: "a 12 kilometros al N. de la cabecera muncipal." Can you tell me where it's indicated? I'm still looking for my ancestors who lived and born in that ranch and moved around the surrounding towns. Trying to find them but need an idea what other cities/towns to research on Family Search. I can't be sure, but, the Tellos I'm searching for may have come from the Tello de Orosco lineages. I need to research deeper into it. Not trying to insult anyone.

I hope i am sending you in the right direction. If you zoom in to the very bottom of the map, around the J of Juchipila (name of the municipalidad, not the cuidad), you see Mezquital del Oro right above the J of Juchipila. And then Northwest of the L of Mezquital, you see Tellos (the T of Tellos is right above the L of Mezquital). It does not say "rancho" but if you look at the key, the rectangle with the piece missing indicates rancho. Tellos is there by itself, between the border of the municipalidades of Juchipila and Tlaltenango. I know there has to be other ranchos, but they are not listed. My grandfather was from Rancho del Tanque, which i believe was northeast of Mezquital del Oro, and they also lived in Rancho La Nopalera which was also near Mezquital but I don't know in what direction. I hope this helps :)

I found the Tellos Ranch! Yay! Thank you so much for your most kind directions navigating the map. I'm so excited to see so many of the other ranchos and cities mentioned in the documents for my ancestors. My ancestors are also from Rancho del Tanque and almost all the surrounding towns and ranchos from San Pedro de Ocampo down to Mezquital del Oro. I can't imagine how they managed to travel such long range distances considering the conditions that existed in the era.

Sandra, fabulous maps! Thanks for sharing.

According to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) website, this is the Google Maps location of los Tellos:

https://www.google.com/maps/@21.2871082,-103.3555975,1608m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

To locate los Tellos on the INEGI website one has to check the box for Rurales and then zoom in to Mezquital del Oro. Also, in the map, change the view from Mapa de INEGI to Satélite de Google for the visual location.

https://en.www.inegi.org.mx/temas/mapas/topografia/

It seems this place is no longer inhabited by many people.
