who are they contributing to? Are you saying this is a "going rate?"

Arturo says he is going to talk more to el señor Leonardo de La Torre.

Ed Serros was in communication with him before. Ed, how was your
experience?

If there was a coordinated effort to line up all parties/surnames and locations then it would be possible for the searcher to do each line and make a good living. Do you agree ? I wonder if this is a practicable suggestion. Arturo may be on to something and if it works out then a link will have been established that we all can follow. We would need to see the film documentation or it would be valueless.
I would like to hear your take on the matter as I think that this could blossom.

yes there is a good possibility. Let's see what Arturo says after he
talks to him more. We might need to wait until he gets back from MX as
I'm pretty sure he is going to get together with him during his trip.

Arturo what do you suppose a figure would be for this monthly stipend?
Are you thinking that several of us that might be interested could
contribute to come up with this monthly stipend? Did you get an idea of
what he was talking about?

I wonder how many hours of research $100 would buy me? Well that is all
I'd be willing to contribute. I have a dead end in Zacatecas, Zacatecas
I need "advice" in knowing how to get around.

let me know if you think this would buy me something and if so I'll send
you 5 scanned records that will give you the information he will need to
do my preliminary investigation.

You are correct.  Iam thinking,
California.  It is very unlikely that the local weatherman would mention
the Sierra Madre Oriental or Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico.

Cerros means a small mountain.  It goes: Loma, cerro, montaña
y
sierra, degrees according to size.  Sierra means "saw" as the tool
the
carpenters use.  The name  "sierra" was given to the mountain
chain
because they resemble the teeth of a  saw. There is only one
Sierra
Nevada, it was named for its snow covered peaks.  I just cringe
when I

sierras"  TV people  (professionals?)  Should know that
there is only
one "Sierra" .

Right, John.  Unless they're
referring to México's sierras.  ;-)

Digest Number 685

Hi Maria,

Thank you for your interest.

I have a letter written by my mother in 1941-42 on La Sultana
letterhead. She and my dad, Ramon Romero, spent several months with
my dad's relatives in and around Guadalajara after their marriage in
Oct., 1941 and returning to the USA before May, 1942. They mainly
stayed on one or another of Adolfo's ranches. I've been told the
family (de la Torre) owned this chocolateria (or chocolate factory as
my mother called it). My mother wrote to her aunt in Minnesota on
this letterhead.

I am searching any clues I can find to reconnect me with my father's
family. It seems easier to find the dead that any living relatives.
I am hoping to trace the ownership of the chocolateria to someone
living who may remember my dad and have family information for me.

My Spanish is slim to none so my research is slow. I would
appreciate any information your family may have on this place or my
family. My pedigree is posted to ranchos. If you need any more
information, please let me know. Thank you for your offer to help.

Hi Emilie:

Thank you for the information about "del Cerro".
I always thought my mother's last name was "Cerros"  But it didn't take
long to find out that my grandfather's last name was "Cerro".

Hacienda de Santiago, Aguascalientes

This is the kind of question that Leonardo de la Torre Berumen could answer. My ancestress, Clara de los Reyes, married Francisco de Chaves Banuelos in Jerez around 1720 or 25. I have no other info on her at all. I wonder if she's related to Maria Josefa? Marge:)

Captain from Castile

Alicia says I write from the heart.  Well, I am emotional---high
strung, they say.

This morning I awoke to the strains of "Conquest".  Some of you
younger ones know this tune as one played by the USC band at their games.
Well, we elderly folk remember it from the movie "Captain from Castile", made
many decades ago and starring Cesar Romero as Cortez, and Tyrone Power as the
Captain from Castile.

I followed the sound and found my husband in the den watching TV.  I
asked him if it was the USC band playing, and he said no, it was the
movie.  He always scans the TV schedule. and when he sees that that movie
will be screened, he makes sure to watch the last scenes.  They are very
stirring, since the score is played really loud.  Da-dum, da-da-da-dum-da
dum-da-dum-da da da da DUM! Da Dum!  The last scene shows the little
rag-tag coterie of Cortez once more on the march after they have conquered
the Aztecs.  The voice-over says "---many died, but many returned to Spain,
rich with gold----either way, they were secure in the knowledge that they had
participated in the opening of a new world".  A Spanish priest then runs
forward to catch up with a young Indian girl carrying a baby, a baby he surely
had baptized.  He offers to carry the baby for her, and she hands the child
over to him.  I cried then --- that baby----one of our ancestors?  A
Mestizo? Was he a founding father of Nuevo Galicia?  The score
thunders on.  They march on, to conquer the New World.

Well, John and Helyn,

My father and his mother continue to elude me, but maybe they are helping
me to help others.  Little voices just keep telling me to look in the state
death records or in the IGI under different spellings.  I cannot recreate
how I do it; it seems to be intuitive.  Now if I could only get that
inspiration on my own elusive relatives.  By the way, John, you may be on
your way to finding the Cerros all the way back to Spain.  The original
name was Del Cerro over there.  Doesn't "cerro" mean "mountain"?

Huejucar, Mezquitic y Monte Escobedo. Porque ese
precio porque esto lo hago en mis ratos libres y
realmente me llevo buen tiempo haciendolo, yaque mi

RIGHT AGAIN!!!

That is my mother's record.

It looks like whoever gave the information (probably my

knew that my mother was three years older than he.

Thank you.

John,  could this be your mother?  The birth date is 1906, not
1903.  You could get a copy of this certificate and see who gave the info
to the mortuary.  You may recognize the name of a relative.  Isn't
Lodi in San Joaquin County?
