I, too, am interested in hearing more about the Caldera and Carlos families
from Zacatecas. I have an assortment of Calderas from Zacatecas who went to
Durango. I have a grandma named Victoria Zavala-Carlos (H) Onofre
Aguilar-Hernandez who had Maria-del-Refugio "Cuca" Aguilar-Zavala from
Fresnillo. Also a grandma Maria-Anacleta "Cleta" Caldera married to
José-María(1) Garcia from Tepetongo.

I envision a hard time with the Calderas because I understand there were
about a dozen Miguel Calderas living about the same time, of which Don
Miguel Caldera was the only mestizo or Spaniard. All others were Indians who
had taken his name to honor him. All had a large number of children except
don Miguel. Regarding don Miguel: this is the book about him. It has been
translated into Spanish.

Capitán Mestizo: Miguel Caldera y la frontera norteña la pacificación de los
chichimecas (1548-1597) by Philip Wayne Powell
P. 18 mentions who his parents were (his mother was baptized, so there must
be an acta de bautismo somewhere):

"El propio Miguel se refirió a sí mismo como hijo natural de esa unión."
"...Su madre había sido bautizada y vivía con Pedro."

Pedro Caldera, Miguel's father, had a brother named Xristobal (he had a
daughter named Isabel Caldera born in Fresnillo, about 1574.

I understand that Miguel Caldera married a Srita. Valdez (I don't know her
first name).

Miguel also had a daughter named Isabel Caldera, born about Abt. 1570 in
Xerez, Zacatecas. This is the Isabel who married Captain Juan (Flores)
de-la-Torre. This Isabel had two sons I know of: Melchor and Marcos de la
Torre Caldera, both born in Xerez.

Book is by Powell, Philip Wayne. Capitán Mestizo: Miguel Caldera y la
frontera norteña la pacificación de los chichimecas (1548-1597) by Philip
Wayne Powell, (Mexico 1980. Fondo de Cultura Económica.).

I think you are going to be amazed at what Susana has put together.  I 
had bits and pieces of this family's history from the Sagrada Mitra but 
she has been able to piece it all together amazingly well just from 
those dispensations.

Erlinda:

Yes I think that Rosalinda and I are both Calderas, in that we are 
descendants of Pedro Cid Caldera, who in turn was in turn, the nephew 
of Miguel de Caldera.

Susana:

Thank you so much for the information.  You will see that I have the 
birthdate for Agustin (Catalina's son).  I will search to see what else 
I have on these people as I go through your work.  Have you seen what 
Rosalinda and I have on the two Carlos de Godoy descendancies that we 
share?  I can send you a GEDCOM of these if you like.

Arturo, now you have my attention.  I've been trying to connect my 
Caldera ancestors in El Durazno, Jerez Zacatecas. I have 3 Caldera 
Grandmothers in my lineage.  Are you Caldera connected also?

I have some information at home that may shed more light on this... I 
have a lot of stary pieces of information that I think your 
comprehensive genealogical information will put together.  One is 
that Antonio Carlos de Godoy's wife, Catalina Cid Caldera was the 
grand-niece of Miguel de Caldera, of fame, pacificador de los 
Chichimecas y Justicia Mayor de los Valles de Jerez y Tlaltenango... 
her father, Pedro Cid Caldera was the son of Hernan Gonzalez and 
Miguel Caldera's half-sister, Maria Cid Caldera.

Maria de la Luz Montejano Hilton has published a very good index of 
all the 17th and 18th century films that includes a very good 
synopsis of each entry so you don't even have to go see the film once 
you find a name in order to get the genealogy information from it.

I am interested in your comments on the "Archivo General de la Nacion" since it appears to 
have much information not available in the Mormon repository. A copy of the Archivo is 
available locally at the University of California San DIego, not too far from my La Jolla 
home. (I hope it is there, as advertised).

My questions for you re: Archivo. How easy is it to use? Is it indexed in any way? Did you 
find much information regarding your family? Any tips? Any warnings? 

Do you know where someone could review the Church Dispensations of Guadalajara 
without going to Guadalajara?

My name is Jose Alfredo De La Torre Romo, yes I am related to the saint Toribio Romo martir from both my father and mother my father grandfather is from the town of Santa Ana my mothers side is from Jalostotitlan both are in the municipality of Jalostotitlan in the state of Jalisco. There were 2 main families in the town of Santa Ana the De La Torre's and the Romo's and they intermarried.

       As for the remarks made by you there was very little intermarriage with the natives and the spanish in the municipality of Jalostotitlan. My aunt (my mothers sister) married my uncle there was an old lady (the town's gossip) said that she had seen everything a rose growing in the swamp. You see my aunt a Romo Padilla was wed to a De Anda ( who happenned to be a meztizo) as that the Romo Padillas are white Spanish. So your remark about the seperation of the different ethnicities is true. I myself am 6' 3" tall and I have dark hair and Brown eyes yet I have cousins who are blond haired and blue eyes. my face is considered spanish or white.

I think you are on to something very important here.  I grew up in a 
predominantly Chinese neighborhood in Los Angeles and then went off 
to school on the east coast, where there are very few Mexicans and 
have lived in Asia and the east coast for most of my adult life.  I 
must say that doing this genealogy research has really led to me to 
learn a lot more about my Mexican heritage and get connected to it.  
I am hoping that I can disseminate what I have learned among my 
relatives and that it will have a similar effect on them.

I think it is important to understand from where we came in order to 
better figure out where we should go...

Emilie, Neither I or my 4 children married within our culture.  I knew 
we were loosing our ethnicity when my son, then age 5, referred to a 
tortilla as a little pizza... that was warning sign #1... When I see 
my granchildren and 3 gr-grandkids, I see Portuguese, German, Jewish, 
Black, Swedish, Norwegian, Italian but no Mexican faces.... Maybe that 
helps explain my passion for preserving our Mexican history for them.  
My granddaughter told me there were no Mexicans in Minn where she 
lives, guess that says it all as far as how she see's her ethnicity.. 
I said to her, "How about you?" she just laughed and got embarrassed...
