Thanks Roy, but I need to search in the files that by the moment are not idexed yet.
Hi Juan
I do no think these are indexed, I went to the link and then to image 5, the firste image is the 1576 marriage of Juan Garcia and Guiomar (not certain of the last name). I put these names in the search fields with the date 1576 and they do not turn up. The writing is fairly easy to read (compared to other record I am still ploughing through from the 1580) so maybe you should still take a look...
Roy many thanks for the link, I think I can use it too.
Best Regards,
Denise
oops need to correct my previous mail. The marriage was in 1575, and when I checked it was in fact there in the index...Sorry for any confusion. The book is indexed.

I stumbled across this and thought I'd share. Its a great Article and short video on the impact of DNA testing on genealogical research and its industry. Very exciting.
Hello Pauline,
Thank you for the article. I encourage everyone to take the DNA test. I'm glad I tested and find the results entriguing, but I don't know how to use my haplogroup R-L176.2 to further or enhance my genealogy research. Unless more people test, I'm not sure that the family finder would do me any good. What has the group found, is it worth the extra $200?
Thank you again, Alice

Hi Alice,
I have taken the DNA test through Ancestry.com, and I have seen some great results in cousin matches for my husband who has also taken the test, who does not know where his family comes from since he is adopted.
I have had a little bit less luck, but finding out where my origins are, that alone is well worth the $100 I spent. That is just my opinion.
Have a good weekend.

Hello Everyone,
i think the doucment says her paternal grandma's last name is orosco, and her maternal grandma's last name is sanchez.
Thank you for responding and confirming what I thought I could see and understand on the maternal side- the Orosco and Sanchez. I am trying to understand the paternal side, the Roman line. I can read Barnardo Roman and Ysabel (Ysavel) _____ something. It looks like Crori or Rori or possibly Ortis..???
Thank you so much!
Kristine
It's Bernardo and not Barnardo. You can't see the eye on the e because of the way the priest wrote and the thickness of the quill therefore it really looks like a c followed by an r which is where the quill goes up again. The same thing happened on the words paternos and maternos. You took this to be an a that didn't connect at the top.
The surname of Isabel (Ysavel) is definitely Ortiz. The priest has an incomplete o at the beginning, the r in those days were like x's at times like in the word fueron, the t is like the one in word maternos but smaller, the i is dotted and the last letter is an s or z written in the style of that time period.
There was no standard of writing in these days, even in English, therefore many words, names, and surnames are written various ways around the world. This also happened in the U.S., Mexico, Spain, England, and Ireland. That is why the name Isabel is spelled as Ysavel.
Armando
Armando,
I cannot thank you enough!!!
This is amazing! The handwriting is so difficult for me to read. And yes, where the quill is dipped, mixed with the priest's handwriting, it makes it a bit difficult, but fantastic to figure out!
Looking at Bernardo, I couldn't figure out if he had 2 first names or if that was "paternos" or not. But now this makes sense.
Thank you everyone for helping me.
Some of the other words I couldn't figure out as well, but the names were the ones I was of most concern here.
I now have more information to continue my search.
Thank you all again.

I recently saw software that downloads the entire Lds film to a computer. Does anyone have the information or any experience using the software ?

I would like to know if anyone has a copy of this software that I could download. I was interested in buying a 2 Terabite external hard drive and dowloading a few films to go through..
David Serna
It seems the Fastfilm website has been taken down due to conflict with Family Search. unless someone has information showing other wise.
Last year I went to a conference in Saltillo and one of the speakers said his students in Utah were using a program to download entire LDS films and that so far they had no complaints from familysearch. I didn't find out which program they were using.
Victoriano Navarro
I watched the tutorial for this software, and I must say that I am very impressed with what 'Jon' has accomplished.
The only problem for me is that I'm not at all sure I want to download entire microfilms—hundreds of them—onto my computer; I mean, why would I want to reproduce even a part of the online FamilySearch archive? That said, it is a pretty neat trick 'Jon' has pulled off here.

The website is Fastfilm on Facebook.
he had been offering free downloads for the program and was issuing updates. the facebook site says it has now been closed .. i didnt read the details something about conflict with Lds. the software allows you to download the entire film for use offline.. I was conciderng buying a 2 Terabyte external hard drive to download a number of films for research..
In my opinion he could continue offering the software for downloading the files and viewable through adobe flashplayer as long as he didnt specify that it was for Family history film downloading...
I would like to see the LDS website offering this download. I have concidered contacting the Fastfilm people to find out about possible future software release...

Hello,
Here are some titles I enjoyed and found useful:
The Encomenderos of New Spain (Robert Himmerich y Valencia 1991, paperback 1996) - ethnohistorial information as well as alphabetized, short biographical info on the encomenderos.
Montezuma's Children, Aztec Royalty Under Spanish Rule 1520 - 1700 (Donald E. Chipman, 2005) - includes genealogies
Spanish Texas 1519 - 1821 revised ed. (Donald E Chipman and Harriet Denise Joseph, 2010)
Conquest, Montezuma, Cortez, and the Fall of Old Mexico (Hugh Thomas, 1993 ((2005))
Andariegos Y Pobladores. Nuevo Espana y Nueva Galicia (Siglo XVI). (Jose Miguel Romero de Solis, 2001) - I have this as an e-book. Again, an alphabetized list with short biographies of individuals, and a prologue by Guillermo Tovar de Teresa.
Soldiers, Indians and Silver, The Northward Advance of New Spain, 1550 - 1600. (Philip Wayne Powell, 1952) - a lot of interesting ethnohistorical info, and found some names from my family tree on this one...
A lot of interesting
I don't consider myself a seasoned veteran on genealogy, but I can tell you of some books that really helped me with genealogy and gave me a better understanding of Mexican History.
The first book I read about genealogy was "Finding your Hispanic Roots" by George Ryskamp. It explains all the basics about genealogy and family history as it relates to us researching in Latin America. The edition that I read was years ago, and it may be a little bit outdated concerning online research, but it is still a great tool for your research. I don't know if there have been updated editions.
For Mexican History, there are lots of good books. One that I have found interesting is "Historia Verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva Espana" by Bernal Diaz del Castillo. It explains how the conquest of Mexico took place from the perspective of a Spanish soldier that was present there, and it shows how Mexico and el mestizaje started. It is written in old Spanish and it may be a little tedious to read, but

Indeed Isabel is one of those names used for both sexes in Mexico and other countries.
The nickname for the girls is Chabela, and for the boys is Chabelo.

Since there were so many discoveries on another Castañeda forum, I thought I'd try again.
I'm trying to get more info, anything, on Castañedas from Atolinga, Zac.
Here's what I have:
Thank You Rosalinda, now I can research the correct Castaneda Line.
I know there were several Castaneda Families in Atolinga and Tlaltenango. Can someone tell me if they have Rosalia Castaneda in any of your Family Trees. She married Josef Antonio Raigosa. Children were :
Josef Luis Raigosa DOB 10-11-1781
Anna Ma Guadalupe Raigosa DOB 05-19-1779
Ma Petra Salome Raigosa DOB 10-23-1784
Ygnacio Raigosa
I have the children baptism records, but they dont specify Grandparents, so I really dont know which Castaneda line Rosalia belongs to.
Thanks
Ruben Rojas Delgado
Hi Ruben,
The marriage date for Rosalia and Jose Antonio is 5 Mar 1764 in Tlaltenango, ZAC.
The indexing project (batch) number is M60714-1 and the source film number is 443969.
Her parents were Pedro Joseph de Castaneda and Maria Gertrudis Lopez (I am related to Rosalia through her father). Jose Antonio's parents were Marcos de Raigosa (also spelled Raygoza, Raygosa, Raigoza) and Ana de Santiago Mojarro (also spelled Moxarro). I am related to Jose Antonio Raigosa through his father, Marcos.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Helyn,
Here is a thought...
You're looking for Francisco Castaneda and Maria Tomasa Dias. Could this be
the couple?
Franco. De Castaneda married Maria Thomasa de Soria on Feb. 10, 1773 in
Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zac(familysearch.org, film 443970, image 191)
The record states that they are both from Charcuelos and the time period
makes it possible.
Francisco's parents are listed as Santiago Castaneda (his brother is Diego
de los Santos Castaneda that you mentioned) and Rufina de Balensuela. Maria
Thomasa's parents are listed as Lorenso de Soria and Gertrudis Juliana de
Loera. Maybe you can find some reference to "Soria" in their children's
baptismal or marriage records?
I have the Diego de los Santos Castaneda line in my tree several times, so
maybe be are related...

Hi Laura,
Here are some links that may be helpful:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15246-660-26?cc=1410092&wc=6… Informacion Matrimonial of Alexandro Castaneda and Maria Candelaria Ramirez (includes their parents' names)
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18416-5739-69?cc=1874591&wc=… Marriage Dispensation for Juan Antonio Castaneda, the brother of Alexandro (it gives some ancestors' names)
Good luck!

Is there any other place to look up records?
I had problems as well on Internet Explorer. I switched to Google Chrome and it works fine now.

I have experienced this also on occasion.
If you make the search too specific, that is, you enter names, dates, and places, or have more than one of the "exact match" boxes checked, the search engine tries to match all the parameters, fails, and returns nothing.
Make the search less specific, and when the search returns records, then try to make it more specific only one field at a time. You should then have more success.

Can you provide us with some examples? I haven't noticed a problem with that. I have only seen problems with opening digitized records.

I didn't make any notes of searches that didn't work; I just tried less restrictive searches until they produced results.
The area that I've been looking at is Leon, Guanajuato.
Just prior the the latest changes at Family Search, I was having problems loading images, but that all went away when the new site was fully up and running.
I have noticed that when changes are being made in the background, we have problems. When they're done, the problems are resolved.
