Mexican inquisition documents on Familysearch?

Just curious, but does anyone know if there's any Mexican Inquisition documents online on Familysearch.com, or elsewhere that we can look at?

Chris,

You can usually find numerous inquisition documents on PARES, I had an aunt by the name of María Méndez de Torres who was accused of witchcraft in 1672 in Zamora, Michoacán. Her inquisition documents that mention her brother as a witness and her parents and grandparents and great grandparents. She was declared "limpa de toda mala raza, judío, árabe, etc y es conocido que es de bueno liñaje y de buenos padres nobles y distinguidos entre el pueblo de Çamora. It was interesting to note that someone would actually accuse her of this, since it was well known the position they had in the cabildo and amongst society as one of the principal families of Zamora in the XVI century in the Obispado de Michoacán. One of her great grand nephews would later become the 1st or 2nd governor of Michoacán in the recent-declared republic in 1823, Telésforo Méndez de Torres.

I hope PARES will prove to be a resourceful tool for, there exist so many archives that are vital for our research, learn how

Recording the Image Number from LDS online records, for my own records... Bad Idea ?

I have been reconcidering my practice of recording page numbers, entry number for the person (If given), and also the IMAGE NUMBER.

Comentario

I have been recording image numbers on all my entries for the past year when I started my genealogy research. I have found it extremely useful whenever I needed to go back to locate and review a record. Downloading and or printing all these records just seems like an arduous task. There have been many times that I have found a record that was not in correct chronological order. Sometimes the parish records alternate dates between the main church and an auxiliary location. And of course sometimes the date recorded is inaccurate (for example Jan 2013 is recorded as Jan 2012).
Well in fact the Jalisco parish records I research were updated on Feb 25. To my surprise I noticed that my entries for marriages for Juchitlan 1860-1878 records no longer point to the correct image! Upon further inspection I discovered that they added about 50-80 images to this particular collection, which makes absolutely no sense since the new images added were for marriages from 1922. I do not yet know if

Comentario

David Serna

I too have found some recent changes to online files where the total number of images has been increased. I still see value in recording the image numbers.

Comentario

When they started putting the microfilms online, every single image had a code number which appeared as you downloaded it. Later they got rid of it. Nevertheless, I think it is a good idea to write down both the microfilm number and the image number, even if either becomes useless in the future. Some records are relatively easy to find without image number since all the records in the series follow a chronological order. But if you have a section with 3000 images and no strict chronological order (as with some of the Dispensas), then an image number becomes a must.

Comentario

David

I would not go so far as to say this is a bad idea, but you need to know the issues with such a citation.

The FHL is simply a repository of a copy of these records. The film number, image number are simply from their system of cataloging and presenting the record. The url of the source is simply the current electronic repository, which (1) may change as systems are updated or (2) could simply go away if the system becomes unfunded or unsupported (for the FHL this is highly unlikely).

I think the proper citation for the record (for church or civil records) should be:
author (Catholic Church or Civil Authorities)
Parish (for church only) and location
record type (baptisms, marriages, etc)
volume number or year(s) covered
page or folio number (if used)
record number if used

Along with this information, you should note the repository (FHL), their film and image number, as well as the date you extracted the information.

Family Search does provide some guidance on citing records

Comentario

David Serna Thank you for the guidance ... I do note the parish, book number and page no. but i have never noted the LDS film source numbers. It is always nice to have others to bounce ideas off . thanks for the help.

Comentario

I have a minor disagreement with George on this issue. First, let me say that I agree completely that all of the information George lists is important, including the FHL film and image numbers; but I think the film and image numbers are extremely important for the reason that, for many of the early years, the films contain not only mixed dates, but also mixed events—that is, baptisms, marriages, confirmations, and burials may be mixed within one film number.

I have taken great pains to generate an index of the contents of the films I have accessed over the past year and a half, which has proven invaluable to me, especially when I return to a particular film again and again.

Here is one, almost comical, example of how a film can contain mixed information; it is FHL Film 280854 from Ocotlán. The FHL catalogue says that this film is "Bautismos 1610-1723 (incluye algunos matrimonios)", but this is the 'true' catalogue of this film (as accurately as I have been able to define it):

Comentario

One further comment on why I catalogue the FHL Films I use and use image numbers in my citations: some—perhaps many—of the FHL film descriptions are incorrect; for example, this is the FHL online catalogue description of FHL Film 221879 (Lagos de Moreno): "Confirmaciones 1728 -- Bautismos 1607-1640 -- Matrimonios 1638 -- Confirmaciones 1680 -- Casamientos 1605-1637 -- Confirmaciones 1634 -- ? 1612-1634 -- Defunciones, Matrimonios 1638-1634 -- Bautismos 1647-1649, 1627-1628, 1615-1620 -- Matrimonios 1612-1635 -- Defunciones 1681, 1659-1673". Well, in cataloging this film, I discovered that, between images 324 and 329, there are marriages that date from 1586! Incredibly, I found a marriage record that I needed from 1588, which I would never have found had I not had my catalogue; it is the earliest record I have found online thus far on any FHL film ...

Thanks for the info. The Guadalupe Camarena I am looking for was a grandmother already on 1803, so I am guessing she must have been born around 1755 or 1765. In the chart you send me there is a Guadalupe Camarena borned around 1785 whom in 1803 would´ve been 18 years old, so I am almost sure she is not the one. Thanks anyway and if i find something I´ll let you know.

The Dispensas were only required if the couple getting married had some kind of family relation (by blood, by marriage, by "illicit relations", etc.). I don't know if all the marriage permits listed in the Dispensas have duplicate entries in the Información matrimonial records. That's a good question.
So, family relation of some kind, you MUST get a Dispensa; no family relation at all, you are OK just with Información matrimonial.

That's great work you have done in your investigation.

Juan de Villalobos Campo and Antonia Petra Galvan de Rojas were my ancestors. Four of their children married into the Moreno de Ortega family. Nicolás Sánchez Moreno is probably related to the Moreno de Ortega family based on what you have posted.

The first Esteban de Anda Altamirano was the original owner of San Antonio de los Sauces according to a book by Mario Gómez Mata cronista de Lagos de Moreno. He was the grandfather of Esteban de Anda Altamirano y Sáenz de Vidaurre who married Josefa Moreno de Ortega y González de Hermosillo. I don't know if there was another San Antonio at the time.

The Moreno de Ortega family also married into the Gómez de Portugal and Rodríguez de Portugal family. They also married into the Ortiz de Parada family a few times. The Parada family you are talking about probably descend from Sebastián de Parada and María Ortíz de Saavedra which who gave their descendants the Ortiz de Parada

It says Nicolas was the son of "padres no conocidos" so maybe he was adopted by the Sanchez Morenos, or was an illegitimate son of a woman of the Sanchez Moreno family and an unknown Angulo. The second option could explain why in the 1740's Nicolas and some of his children started going by the last name Angulo, as he may have found out who his father was. Any ideas on how to get more information on stuff like this?

Hey Armando

I noticed Josefa de Moya used Chavez in the baptisms of some of her children:
Rosa Maria https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/ND1N-SQB
and
Alejandro https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J93R-XQG

I assumed because of Rosa Maria's marriage to Manuel Chavez Fragoso Josefa was also a Chavez Fragoso and noticed there was a couple Pedro Chavez Fragoso and Jacinta Moya that seemed to line up chronologically making her Manuel's First Cousin. Of course the dispensa would be needed to prove this but its my working hypothesis until I get a chance to look through those dispensas.

I tried looking for Francisco and Francisca Flores but I couldn't find anything. I also looked through Retonos de Espana en la Nueva Galicia to see if they were in the Flores de la Torre chapter but no luck there. Seeing as they were listed as being from Jalostotitlan I'm leaning towards the idea of them being related in some way to Diego Flores de la Torre y Arias de Valdes, son of the last

Kristine,
Thanks so much for introducing me to the Simon's Brick Yard http://montebellohistoricalsociety.org/mhs/Simons.html. I grew up not far from where it was and had no idea it had existed. My dad, who moved to LA in 1949, recalls the brickyard, but didn't know there was company housing on the site, too. My mom worked in a factory in the mid50s on Vail Ave, apparently near where the brickyard had been. It is unrelated to the RR Section Houses but may have had some things in common with them. I would guess that, being in the city, the homes in Simon had electricity, which the RR section housing largely did not.

Thanks again.

Hello,

I never knew they existed either, prior to finding the information on my GGrandfather's WWI Draft Registration Card.

I still have not found much information on his stay there, the search goes on.

Hope you find out more info on the RR section housing that you are looking for.

Kristine =)
